Immediate antecedents of cigarette smoking: an analysis of unrestricted smoking patterns.

Theory suggests that cigarette smoking is under stimulus control and that affect is a key trigger for smoking. A previous study (S. Shiftman et al., 2002) showed little relationship between affect and smoking, but this relationship could have been suppressed by the impact of smoking restrictions. The study evaluated these associations in a 1988 sample that was subject to few smoking restrictions. Smokers (N = 28) not seeking treatment used palmtop computers to record context and affect prior to smoking (n = 2217 observations) and also at random times when not smoking (n = 2,380). Comparisons s

The effect of cigarette smoking and smoking cessation on spinal fusion.

STUDY DESIGN: The effect of cigarette smoking and smoking cessation on spinal fusion was studied in a retrospective review of 357 patients who had undergone instrumented spinal fusion. OBJECTIVE: To document the widely assumed but unreported benefit of cigarette smoking cessation on fusion rate and clinical outcome after spinal fusion surgery. BACKGROUND DATA: Cigarette smoking has been shown to inhibit lumbar spinal fusion and to adversely effect outcome in treatment of lumbar spinal disorders. Prior reports have compared smokers and nonsmokers, as opposed to comparing smokers and quitters.

Smoke composition and predicting relationships for international commercial cigarettes smoked with three machine-smoking conditions.

The study objectives were to determine the effects of smoking machine puffing parameters on mainstream smoke composition and to express those effects as predicting relationships. Forty-eight commercial Philip Morris USA and Philip Morris International cigarettes from international markets and the 1R4F reference cigarette were machine-smoked using smoking conditions defined by the International Organization of Standardization (ISO), the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH), and Health Canada (HC). Cigarette tobacco fillers were analyzed for nitrate, nicotine, tobacco-specific nitros

Secondhand smoke and smoking restrictions in casinos: a review of the evidence.

OBJECTIVE: There is no safe level of secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure. Most US casinos continue to allow smoking, thus exposing workers and patrons to the hazards of SHS. This paper reviews the scientific literature on air quality, SHS exposure, health effects and economic outcomes related to SHS and smoking restrictions in casinos, as well as on smoking prevalence among casino patrons and problem gamblers. DATA SOURCES: Peer reviewed studies published from January 1998 to March 2011. DATA SYNTHESIS: Evidence from air quality, biomarker and survey studies indicates that smoking in casinos is

An examination of the smoking identities and taxonomies of smoking behaviour of youth.

OBJECTIVE: To address observations that the smoking identities of youth are valid descriptors of their smoking behaviour, we examined the relationships between self-reported smoking identities, perceived levels of addiction, and established taxonomies of smoking behaviour of youth. METHOD: Cross-sectional data were collected on demographics, perceived extent of addiction to tobacco, smoking history, and self-reported smoking identity from questionnaires administered to 8225 students in British Columbia, Canada. A total of 7246 participants were categorised according to four smoking taxonomies

Return to smoking following a smoke-free psychiatric hospitalization.

This study examined the smoking behaviors and motivations of 100 patients hospitalized in a smoke-free psychiatry unit. The sample averaged nineteen cigarettes per day and had a history of repeated failed quit attempts, yet 65% expressed interest in quitting. During hospitalization, nicotine replacement was provided to 70% of smokers to manage nicotine withdrawal. Provider counseling for smoking cessation, however, was rare, and all patients returned to smoking within five weeks of hospital discharge. The inpatient setting provides a potential site for initiating tobacco dependence treatment;

Cardiovascular effects of secondhand smoke: nearly as large as smoking.

BACKGROUND: Secondhand smoke increases the risk of coronary heart disease by approximately 30%. This effect is larger than one would expect on the basis of the risks associated with active smoking and the relative doses of tobacco smoke delivered to smokers and nonsmokers. METHODS AND RESULTS: We conducted a literature review of the research describing the mechanistic effects of secondhand smoke on the cardiovascular system, emphasizing research published since 1995, and compared the effects of secondhand smoke with the effects of active smoking. Evidence is rapidly accumulating that the card

Thirdhand smoke and exposure in California hotels: non-smoking rooms fail to protect non-smoking hotel guests from tobacco smoke exposure.

INTRODUCTION: This study examined tobacco smoke pollution (also known as thirdhand smoke, THS) in hotels with and without complete smoking bans and investigated whether non-smoking guests staying overnight in these hotels were exposed to tobacco smoke pollutants. METHODS: A stratified random sample of hotels with (n=10) and without (n=30) complete smoking bans was examined. Surfaces and air were analysed for tobacco smoke pollutants (ie, nicotine and 3-ethynylpyridine, 3EP). Non-smoking confederates who stayed overnight in guestrooms provided urine and finger wipe samples to determine exposur

Extracellular vesicle-encapsulated microRNA signatures of cigarette smoking and smoking-related harm.

BACKGROUND: The health effects of smoking vary substantially between individuals. Novel strategies are needed to identify individuals with increased risk of smoking-related morbidity. Extracellular vesicle-encapsulated microRNAs (EV-miRNAs) may be viable biomarkers of smoking-related harm. Here, we measured associations of smoking status with plasma EV-miRNA expression levels. METHODS: Participants who were free of smoking-related diseases were sampled from the prospective Normative Aging Study (NAS). Smoking histories were evaluated using standardized smoking questionnaires. EV-miRNAs were m

Interplay of Depression, Smoking Intention, and Smoking Behavior in Chinese Dai Adolescents.

Tobacco smoking and depression are important contributors to the burden of disease in China, and their onset typically occurs in adolescence. However, there is no consensus on the nature and underlying mechanisms of their interplay, and related studies on Chinese adolescents and ethnic minorities are limited. This study tested the mediation role of depression in the link between smoking intention and behavior in relation to sex. A secondary analysis was conducted on data from a survey of 1,322 Chinese Dai middle school students aged 15-19 years (M = 17.02 years; 773 female students and 542 mal

Social Participation and Persistent Smoking Among Older Chinese With Smoking-Related Morbidity.

OBJECTIVES: Chronic diseases are common in midlife and old age and smoking can pose more health and longevity challenges for older people with chronic illnesses. In China where smoking is highly prevalent, older adults are likely to continue smoking even after developing severe chronic diseases. We examined the national prevalence of persistent smoking among older adults. We also investigated the sociodemographic characteristics of persistent smoking among ever-smokers with chronic diseases and its association with social participation (of various types). METHODS: We used data from a national

Relevance of smoking interventions for dental clinic patients with smoking-related disease.

OBJECTIVES: Despite a decline in cigarette smoking in the United States, high rates persist among the socioeconomically underserved who consequently are at risk for smoking-related disease (SRD). Since academically affiliated dental clinics are more likely to encounter underserved patients, smoking interventions could address both the oral and systemic risks of continued smoking. To determine the relevance of providing smoking counseling in the context of SRD, this study examined the prevalence of smoking and its associations with socioeconomic status (SES), SRD and its sequela, and medication

Panic attacks and smoking cessation among cancer patients receiving smoking cessation treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about factors associated with smoking cessation in cancer patients. This study examined the impact of panic attacks on smoking abstinence likelihood among cancer patients receiving tobacco cessation treatment. METHOD: The relationship of panic attacks to 7-day point-prevalence abstinence at mid-treatment, end of treatment, and 6-month post-end of treatment were examined among cancer patients (N=2255 patients; 50.1% female; Mage=54.9, SD=11.0) who received counseling and pharmacotherapy for smoking cessation. High-Risk Smoking Behaviors and Barriers to Smoking Cessation Among Homeless Individuals.

BACKGROUND: Although tobacco practices and the effects of tobacco use among the general American population are well described, minimal data exist regarding tobacco use and barriers to smoking cessation among homeless individuals. METHODS: Anonymous, voluntary surveys based on a previously implemented instrument were completed by 100 smoking individuals residing at a homeless shelter. These surveys assessed high-risk smoking behaviors and respondents' perceived barriers to long-term smoking cessation. RESULTS: Ninety percent of study participants reported engaging in at least one of the high

Does deterioration in mental health after smoking cessation predict relapse to smoking?

BACKGROUND: It is possible that some people who quit smoking experience improved mental health after cessation and therefore remain abstinent, whereas other people who quit may experience worse mental health after cessation and therefore be more likely to relapse to smoking. Thus, in this study we aimed to examine the association between an enduring change in mental health following the cessation period and future risk of relapse. METHODS: A secondary analysis of prospective data pooled from five placebo-controlled randomised trials for smoking reduction conducted in Europe, USA and Australia

Smoking dependence across the levels of cigarette smoking in a multiethnic sample.

OBJECTIVES: The Brief Wisconsin Inventory of Smoking Dependence Motives (WISDM) is a multi-dimensional smoking dependence measure that assesses primary dependence motives (PDM; e.g., core dependence marked by tolerance, craving) and secondary dependence motives (SDM; e.g., auxiliary dependence motives such as cognitive enhancement, weight control). However, the relationship between PDM, SDM, and smoking level remains unclear. Thus, we examined these scales across smoking levels in a diverse sample of smokers. METHODS: Participants were 2376 African American, Latino, and non-Hispanic White smo

Correlates of continued smoking versus cessation among survivors of smoking-related cancers.

OBJECTIVE: We examined correlates of continued smoking versus cessation among a sample of survivors of smoking-related cancers who were actively smoking at the time of cancer diagnosis. METHODS: Participants with a history of smoking and a smoking-related cancer diagnosis (lung, oral, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, bladder, stomach, cervix, kidney, pancreas, acute myeloid leukemia) within the past 4 years were identified in the electronic medical record. We recruited 613 individuals to complete a mail-based survey and received 139 completed surveys (22.7% response rate). We focused on 105 partic

Craving, withdrawal, and smoking urges on days immediately prior to smoking relapse.

Rates of smoking relapse remain high, despite the wide availability of cessation aids. Presumably factors such as craving, withdrawal symptoms, and smoking urges are key contributors to relapse, but empirical support for this presumption is not conclusive and is complicated by the high variability in symptoms across individuals and time, as well as by the lack of an absolute symptom threshold for response. Data were analyzed from 137 female smokers, aged 18-40 years, who completed 30 days of a protocol for a longitudinal smoking cessation trial. Subjects were assigned a quit date and followed
