Serious mental illness and smoking cessation.

Persons with serious mental illness (SMI) are faced with substantial challenges to their health. This population is two to three times more likely to smoke cigarettes than persons who do not suffer from mental illness. In particular, young adults are at high risk for vulnerability to both SMI and cigarette smoking. Although there are proven methods for smoking cessation, both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions show limited usefulness for SMI who smoke. Alternative health care options as well as support groups and physical exercise are discussed as methods that may be useful in s

Effectiveness of hospital-based smoking cessation.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Smoking cessation for current smokers is a health-care imperative. It is not clear which approaches to smoking cessation are the most effective in the hospital setting and which factors predict long-term abstinence. We hypothesized that a hospital-based smoking cessation program involving behavioral modification and support would provide an effective intervention for smoking cessation. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING: Smoking cessation clinics in a tertiary referral, cardiothoracic hospital. PATIENTS OR PARTICIPANTS: Two hundred forty-three smokers and 187 never-

Self-administered treatment for smoking cessation.

Self-administered treatment for smoking cessation has the potential to reach a broad spectrum of the population of smokers. This article focuses on self-administration of behavioral and pharmacological treatments for smoking cessation. Evidence for the effectiveness of written manuals to self-administer behavioral treatment is mixed. There is no evidence that self-help manuals alone are effective. However, they do increase quit rates when combined with personalized adjuncts such as written feedback and outreach telephone counseling. Efficacy trials of first-line pharmacotherapies (nicotine gum

Perceived Stress and Smoking Cessation: The Role of Smoking Urges.

Despite the fact that perceived stress is related to abstinence smoking outcomes, no studies have investigated the mediational effect of specific tobacco-related variables on this relationship. This study aimed to explore the indirect effect of perceived stress on abstinence at the end of treatment through smoking urges. The sample comprised 260 treatment-seeking smokers (58.5% female; Mage = 46.00; SD = 11.1) who underwent psychological smoking cessation treatment. The brief version of the Questionnaire of Smoking Urges (QSU) and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS14) were used. Mediation analyse

Stressor-elicited smoking and craving during a smoking cessation attempt.

Stressors can undermine smokers' attempts to quit smoking. Although contemporary theories and animal models support this idea, human research has struggled to demonstrate definitively the relationship between stressors and smoking. Researchers have employed more ecologically valid methods like ecological momentary assessment to address this question, but studies focusing explicitly on stressors remain sparse and findings inconsistent. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of stressful event intensity on smoking and craving among cigarette smokers during a quit attempt. We conduct

[Smoking cessation with ear acupuncture. Descriptive study on patients after a smoking cessation treatment with ear acupuncture].

BACKGROUND: In complementary medicine literature studies on long-term observation of one of its methods are rare. OBJECTIVE: The present study is an evaluation of the smoking behavior of patients treated with ear acupuncture for smoking cessation. Additionally we investigated factors that favor or impede smoking cessation. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 249 patients who had undergone ear acupuncture for smoking cessation between 1985 and 1998 in a practice in Aarau (Switzerland) were asked before the first treatment to fill in a form regarding their smoking behavior and retrospectively in autumn 1998

The effect of cigarette smoking and smoking cessation on spinal fusion.

STUDY DESIGN: The effect of cigarette smoking and smoking cessation on spinal fusion was studied in a retrospective review of 357 patients who had undergone instrumented spinal fusion. OBJECTIVE: To document the widely assumed but unreported benefit of cigarette smoking cessation on fusion rate and clinical outcome after spinal fusion surgery. BACKGROUND DATA: Cigarette smoking has been shown to inhibit lumbar spinal fusion and to adversely effect outcome in treatment of lumbar spinal disorders. Prior reports have compared smokers and nonsmokers, as opposed to comparing smokers and quitters.

Association between Low-Dose Computed Tomography Results and 1-Year Smoking Cessation in a Residential Smoking Cessation Program.

The COVID-19 pandemic is a global health threat. Smoking and smoking-related lung diseases are risk factors for severe COVID-19 infection. This study investigated whether low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) scan results affected the success of 1-year smoking cessation. The Gyeonggi Southern Smoking Support Center performed the residential smoking cessation program from January to December 2018. During the program, LDCT was performed on 292 participants; 6 months later, follow-up via telephone or visit was conducted. Among the 179 participants who succeeded in smoking cessation for 6 months, te

Effects of rapid smoking. Physiologic evaluation of a smoking-cessation therapy.

We studied 24 healthy young male smokers to ascertain the medical safety of a highly effective smoking-abatement technique called rapid smoking. In comparison with results obtained after a 12-h cigarette fast or after normal smoking, statistically significant increases occurred after rapid smoking in heart and respiratory rates, systolic blood pressure, carboxyhemoglobin, and pH (p less than 0.05), while arterial PCO2, HCO3-, and serum [K+] fell (p less than 0.05). Rapid smoking produced alveolar hyperventilation in all subjects. In eight, arterial PO2 increased appropriately, but in 16, fell

The Role of Chronic Pain in Smoking Cessation: Results From a Large Smoking Cessation Program in Primary Care.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic pain often co-occurs with tobacco dependence. Nicotine's acute analgesic effects may increase the reward value of cigarettes and patients report smoking to cope with pain. These factors may hinder smoking cessation outcomes for individuals experiencing chronic pain; however, research on smoking cessation outcomes in this population has been limited. This study examined whether self-reported chronic pain diagnosis was associated with smoking cessation outcome among primary care patients seeking treatment to quit smoking. AIMS AND METHODS: A secondary analysis was conducte

Success of a smoking cessation programme in smoking behaviour of chronic periodontitis patients and identification of predictors of motivation for smoking cessation - a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: The primary goal of this pilot study was to evaluate the success of a smoking cessation programme on smoking behaviour of patients with chronic periodontitis. Secondary goals were to identify the prevalence of smoking among them, predictors of motivation for smoking cessation and for successful nicotine abstinence. METHODS: Smokers suffering from chronic periodontitis were offered cognitive behavioural group therapy of 10 once-weekly sessions. Smoking is reduced stepwise and complete cessation is to be achieved by the sixth session. Sociodemographic data, history of smoking and mo

Cancer Risk Following Smoking Cessation in Korea.

IMPORTANCE: Tobacco smoking is associated with increased risk of various cancers, and smoking cessation has been associated with reduced cancer risks, but it is still unclear how many years of smoking cessation are required to significantly reduce the cancer risk. Therefore, investigating the association of smoking cessation with cancer is essential. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the time course of cancer risk according to the time elapsed since smoking cessation and the benefits of smoking cessation according to the age at quitting. Interventions for smoking cessation in hospitalised patients.

BACKGROUND: In 2020, 32.6% of the world's population used tobacco. Smoking contributes to many illnesses that require hospitalisation. A hospital admission may prompt a quit attempt. Initiating smoking cessation treatment, such as pharmacotherapy and/or counselling, in hospitals may be an effective preventive health strategy. Pharmacotherapies work to reduce withdrawal/craving and counselling provides behavioural skills for quitting smoking. This review updates the evidence on interventions for smoking cessation in hospitalised patients, to understand the most effective smoking cessation treat

Nicotine receptor partial agonists for smoking cessation.

BACKGROUND: Nicotine receptor partial agonists may help people to stop smoking by a combination of maintaining moderate levels of dopamine to counteract withdrawal symptoms (acting as an agonist) and reducing smoking satisfaction (acting as an antagonist). This is an update of a Cochrane Review first published in 2007. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of nicotine receptor partial agonists, including varenicline and cytisine, for smoking cessation. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Tobacco Addiction Group's Specialised Register in April 2022 for trials, using relevant terms in t
