Quantifying venom production: A study on Micrurus snakes in Mexico.

Our study quantifies venom production in nine Mexican coral snake species (Micrurus), encompassing 76 specimens and 253 extractions. Noteworthy variations were observed, with M. diastema and M. laticollaris displaying diverse yields, ranging from 0.3 mg to 59 mg. For animals for which we have length data, there is a relationship between size and venom quantity. Twenty-eight percent of the observed variability in venom production can be explained by snake size, suggesting that other factors influence the amount of obtained venom. These findings are pivotal for predicting venom effects and guidi

Geographic variation of individual venom profile of Crotalus durissus snakes.

BACKGROUND: South American rattlesnakes are represented in Brazil by a single species, Crotalus durissus, which has public health importance due to the severity of its envenomation and to its wide geographical distribution. The species is subdivided into several subspecies, but the current classification is controversial. In Brazil, the venoms of C. d. terrificus and C. d. collilineatus are used for hyperimmunization of horses for antivenom production, even though the distinction of these two subspecies are mostly by their geographical distribution. In this context, we described a comparative

Ancient Diversification of Three-Finger Toxins in Micrurus Coral Snakes.

Coral snakes, most notably the genus Micrurus, are the only terrestrial elapid snakes in the Americas. Elapid venoms are generally known for their potent neurotoxicity which is usually caused by Three-Finger Toxin (3FTx) proteins. These toxins can have a wide array of functions that have been characterized from the venom of other elapids. We examined publicly available sequences from Micrurus 3FTx to show that they belong to 8 monophyletic clades that diverged as deep in the 3FTx phylogenetic tree as the other clades with characterized functions. Functional residues from previously characteriz

Debunking the viper's strike: harmless snakes kill a common assumption.

To survive, organisms must avoid predation and acquire nutrients and energy. Sensory systems must correctly differentiate between potential predators and prey, and elicit behaviours that adjust distances accordingly. For snakes, strikes can serve both purposes. Vipers are thought to have the fastest strikes among snakes. However, strike performance has been measured in very few species, especially non-vipers. We measured defensive strike performance in harmless Texas ratsnakes and two species of vipers, western cottonmouths and western diamond-backed rattlesnakes, using high-speed video record

Venom yields from Australian and some other species of snakes.

The wet and dry venom yields for most Australian native dangerous snakes and a number of non-Australian species are presented. Snakes from the Pseudonaja genus yielded higher than previously published amounts and suggest reconsideration be given to increasing the volume of antivenom in each vial. Higher percentage solids were obtained from venoms from the 4 cobra species (Naja) and Pseudechis genus included in this series.

[Snakes, scorpions and other poisonous creatures: prophylaxis and emergency medicine].

Most cases of poisoning by animals are caused by snakes, spiders or scorpions. In addition to"first aid" such as calming the victim and immobilization of the bitten limb, other measures include monitoring vital functions and rapid transportation to hospital as dictated by the symptoms presenting, and, where indicated, injection of an antiserum (identification of the animal concerned). On no account should the bite wound be cut or attempts made to suck out the venom. While the sting of a scorpion or a spider bite often do not lead to severe complications in adults, a brush with a poisonous snak

Early evolution of the venom system in lizards and snakes.

Among extant reptiles only two lineages are known to have evolved venom delivery systems, the advanced snakes and helodermatid lizards (Gila Monster and Beaded Lizard). Evolution of the venom system is thought to underlie the impressive radiation of the advanced snakes (2,500 of 3,000 snake species). In contrast, the lizard venom system is thought to be restricted to just two species and to have evolved independently from the snake venom system. Here we report the presence of venom toxins in two additional lizard lineages (Monitor Lizards and Iguania) and show that all lineages possessing toxi

Unusual neurotoxic envenomations by Vipera aspis aspis snakes in France.

Vipera aspis aspis (V.a.a.) is the most dangerous poisonous snake in South-Eastern France. The clinical symptoms observed after V.a.a. envenomations involve mostly local signs (pain, edema) associated in the more severe cases with systemic symptoms (gastro-intestinal and cardiovascular manifestations). Since 1992, several unusual cases of moderate and severe 'neurotoxic' envenomations by V.a.a. snakes have been reported in a very localized area in South-Eastern France. Most of the human patients mainly suffered neurological signs owing to cephalic muscle paralysis. Drowsiness and dyspnea were

Fatal mycotic dermatitis in captive brown tree snakes (Boiga irregularis).

Cutaneous fungal infections occurred in four captive brown tree snakes (Boiga irregularis). The ventral scales were most commonly affected, and lesions began as areas of erythema and edema with vesicle formation, followed by development of caseous brown plaques. Lesions usually started where ventral scales overlapped and spread rapidly. All snakes died within 14 days after clinical signs were first noted. The deaths of three of the snakes were directly attributable to the cutaneous disease; the other snake died from renal failure and visceral gout, most likely induced by gentamicin therapy. Hi

Experimental infection of elaphid snakes with Cryptosporidium serpentis (Apicomplexa: Cryptosporidiidae).

The shedding pattern of fecal Cryptosporidium serpentis oocysts, histopathologic changes in the gastric region, and the effect of spiramycin treatment were investigated in 6 experimentally infected, captive black rat (Elaphe obsoleta obsoleta), 4 yellow rat (Elaphe obsoleta quadrivittata), and 2 corn snakes (Elaphe guttata guttata). Feces were monitored for up to 2 years postinfection (PI). No significant (P > 0.07) differences were observed between expected and observed numbers of PI oocyst-positive feces. Two of 5 control animals acquired natural infections of C. serpentis over the period of

Complement in the serum and venom of Brazilian snakes (Crotalidae).

Proteins antigenically related to CoF, the anticomplementary protein of the venom of the Indian hooded cobra (Naja naja), were found in a variety of elapid and viper venoms but not in the venom of Brazilian crotalids . In keeping with this finding was the weak ability of Brazilian snake venom to convert C3 in human serum. All snake serums tested, including Brazilian crotalids , contained a beta-globulin antigenically related to CoF. This serum protein in Brazilian snake serum had a number of characteristics of mammalian C3, including conversion on storage or on incubation of this serum with en

The Influence of the Different Disposition Characteristics of Snake Toxins on the Pharmacokinetics of Snake Venom.

Snake venom is comprised of a combination of different proteins and peptides with a wide range of molecular weights and different disposition processes inherent to each compound. This causes venom to have a complex exposure profile. Our study investigates 1) how each molecular weight fraction (toxin) of venom contributes to the overall time course of the snake venom, and 2) the ability to determine toxin profiles based on the profile of the overall venom only. We undertook an in silico simulation and modelling study. Sixteen variations of venom, comprising of two to nine toxins with different

Snake Venomics Display: An online toolbox for visualization of snake venomics data.

With the introduction of powerful mass spectrometry equipment into the field of snake venom proteomics, a large body of venomics data is accumulating. To allow for better comparison between venom compositions from different snake species and to provide an online database containing this data, we devised the Snake Venomics Display toolbox for visualization of snake venomics data on linear scales. This toolbox is freely available to be used online at https://tropicalpharmacology.com/tools/snake-venomics-display/ and allows researchers to visualize venomics data in a Relative Abundance (%) visual

Big snake, small snake: which wound is worse when bitten?

UNLABELLED: Snakebites in children and teenagers are relatively uncommon in the metropolitan city of Hong Kong. They are rarely fatal but may cause significant morbidity and fear. We report two cases of snakebites to illustrate that the spectrum of morbidity is independent of the size of the snakes. A 7-year-old boy was bitten in successions by a green snake. Envenomation occurred at the second bite site. He developed local and systemic signs that were promptly relieved with anti-venom therapy at the intensive care unit. An 18-year-old girl was bitten by a large python but only sustained minor
