Can heat stress affect the psychophysiological responses and locomotor demands of young soccer players during small-sided soccer games?

The study compared the effects of three different heat stress conditions on the psycho-physiological responses and locomotor demands of young players in different small-sided soccer games (SSGs). Sixteen soccer players (age: 16.5 ± 0.5 years) performed 2-a-side and 4-a-side SSGs under three environmental heat stress conditions: low environmental heat (LEH) ≤ 23.9°C, moderate environmental heat (MEH) 24.0-27.9°C, and high environmental heat (HEH) 28.0-32.9°C. Players' heart rate (HR) responses and total distance covered (TDC) were continuously monitored for all SSGs; the rating of perceived exe

Performing more than 20 purposeful gameplay headers in a soccer season may alter autonomic function in female youth soccer players.

This study evaluated the effects of cumulative purposeful soccer heading on autonomic nervous system function in 22 female youth soccer players (13.3 ± 0.9 years). A 10 minute electrocardiogram recording was collected at baseline and following the 20 game season (post-season) to calculate measures of heart rate variability (HRV), including standard deviation of the normal-normal intervals, total power, high frequency (HF), low frequency (LF), LF:HF, normalized HF and normalized LF. Participants were categorized into low- (<20 headers per season; n = 13) and high- (>20 headers per season; n = 9

Creatine supplementation in soccer players: a systematic review.

AIM: Soccer places repeated demands on short-duration, high-intensity performance, including sprints, accelerations, jumps, and technical actions performed over the course of a match. Because these efforts depend heavily on rapid adenosine triphosphate (ATP) resynthesis, creatine is a plausible ergogenic aid for soccer players. However, findings in soccer-specific studies have been inconsistent, and previous reviews have addressed narrower questions using smaller evidence sets. This systematic review therefore examined the effects of creatine supplementation on performance, body composition, a

Outcomes of soccer-related concussion: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: To systematically review the outcomes of sport-related concussion in soccer players. DESIGN: Systematic review. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted in MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Academic Search Premier, EMBASE, Scopus, and CINAHL. Two reviewers independently screened articles against inclusion criteria and assessed risk of bias. Studies published before 13 February 2025 that investigated post-concussive symptoms, symptom duration and resolution, return-to-play (RTP) time, or neurocognitive outcomes following soccer-related concussion (SoRC) were included. RESULTS: A to

Analyzing the impact of prolonged pauses on soccer performance.

During breaks or playing period changes, players' accumulated workload, physiological alterations, body composition factors, sleep, and health-related qualities can factor into soccer performance. This research examined the impact of prolonged pauses, including breaks due to the 2022 FIFA World Cup and an earthquake tragedy, on running displacements and ball in-play duration during the 2022/23 Turkish Super League season. The secondary purpose was to determine the relationship between performance metrics and competition outcomes (i.e., wins, losses, or draws). 550 players from 19 Turkish Super

Exploring factors influencing number of fouls in soccer.

Fouls are common events in soccer games, and their occurrence is influenced by a number of factors. Based on data from the Amisco Pro® semi-automated computer tracking system, this study explores factor influencing the numbers of fouls in soccer such as referees' running distance, foul decision distance, team strength difference, various temperature conditions, and league stages. A total of 480 soccer games from the 2018 and 2019 Chinese Super League were collected. Multiple linear regression and one-way ANOVA were employed for statistical analysis, with the significance level set at p < 0.05.

Shoulder, arm, and elbow injuries in soccer players.

Soccer is a global widespread sport with a high injury rate, mostly to the lower limbs. Even though upper limb injuries are much less common among soccer players, their prevalence has increased in recent years. This is due to several reasons/factors, including new and more aggressive tactics, a rise in the number of younger players with different levels of skeletal maturation, and due to the growth of women's participation in sports, which is in line with the fast progression in the degree of professionalism in women's soccer. This review paper aims to (a) describe the most common injuries in

Header biomechanics in youth and collegiate female soccer.

Concerns about the effects of intentional heading in soccer have led to regulatory restrictions on headers for youth players. However, there is limited data describing how header exposure varies across age levels, and few studies have attempted to compare head impact exposure across different levels of play with the same sensor. Additionally, little is known about the biomechanical response of the brain to header impacts. The objective of this study was to evaluate head kinematics and the resulting tissue-level brain strain associated with intentional headers among youth and collegiate female

Myositis Ossificans of the Adductor Longus in a Soccer Player.

A 20-year-old male collegiate soccer goalkeeper presented to an athletic trainer during the season complaining of right (dominant kicking leg) groin pain. The athletic trainer identified a mass and hematoma and suspected myositis ossificans. The patient was referred to the team physician, who ordered radiographs and magnetic resonance imaging to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other injuries. Imaging demonstrated an adductor longus muscle strain with myositis ossificans. J Orthop Sports Phys Ther 2020;50(10):586. doi:10.2519/jospt.2020.9573.

Minimizing Head Acceleration in Soccer: A Review of the Literature.

Physicians and healthcare professionals are often asked for recommendations on how to keep athletes safe during contact sports such as soccer. With an increase in concussion awareness and concern about repetitive subconcussion, many parents and athletes are interested in mitigating head acceleration in soccer, so we conducted a literature review on factors that affect head acceleration in soccer. We searched electronic databases and reference lists to find studies using the keywords 'soccer' OR 'football' AND 'head acceleration'. Because of a lack of current research in soccer heading biomecha

[Need of cardiopulmonary resuscitation training in the sport of soccer].

OBJECTIVE: In Spain there are around 25,000 cardiac arrests, many of them in the presence of non-medical personnel. In less than 25% of the cardio-respiratory arrests witnessed, witnesses began cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Soccer is a contact sport with multiple physical characteristics and requirements which pushes your body to the limit, thus leading to a higher chance of developing multiple lesions, including cardio-respiratory arrest. Therefore, our goal was to know the actual situation on training in basic life support in soccer. METHOD: A literature review was performed on different d

Sacral fatigue fracture in an amateur soccer player.

Sacral fatigue fractures represent a frequently overlooked cause of low-back and buttock pain in athletes. A high index of clinical suspicion and MRI utilization can provide the accurate diagnosis. A 38-year-old male amateur, midfielder, soccer player presented to our department with aggravating right buttock pain during the previous month, following an increase in training intensity and frequency on an artificial turf field. A point of maximal tenderness was demonstrated over the area of the right sacroiliac joint. No radiographic abnormalities were observed. MRI of the pelvis revealed the pr

Are professional soccer players at higher risk for ALS?

Since the observation of several deaths from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) among Italian professional soccer players, an association between ALS and soccer has been postulated, supported by high rates of morbidity and mortality risks in large cohorts of professionals. Several factors may explain this. A history of repeated (head) injuries is reported more frequently by ALS patients than by individuals with other clinical conditions. An association between exercise and ALS has also been suggested, but results in animals and humans are conflicting. Some clinical and experimental observatio
