Man vs. machine: A comparison of human and computer assessment of nonverbal behavior in social anxiety disorder.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a common psychological disorder associated with broad interpersonal impairment. Most previous studies have examined nonverbal behavior in SAD using human coders. However, one recent study utilized a machine-based analysis of nonverbal behavior and dyadic synchrony in SAD (Asher, Kauffmann, & Aderka, 2020). In the present study, we compared human and computer assessments of nonverbal behavior in social anxiety to enhance our knowledge about their commonalities and unique differences in capturing nonverbal behavior in the context of SAD. Specifically, the present

Parental Mental Illness, Borderline Personality Disorder, and Parenting Behavior: The Moderating Role of Social Support.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Parental mental disorders, particularly borderline personality disorder (BPD), impair parenting behavior. Consequently, the children exhibit an elevated risk for psychopathology across their lifespan. Social support for parents is thought to moderate the relationship between parental mental illness and parenting behavior. It may dampen negative effects and serve as starting point for preventive interventions. This paper provides a literature overview regarding the impact of social support on the sequelae of parental mental illness and BPD for parenting behavior. RECENT FIND

Visual attention to emotional faces in adolescents with social anxiety disorder receiving cognitive behavioral therapy.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a psychiatric condition that often onsets in childhood. Cognitive models underline the role of attention in the maintenance of SAD, but studies on youth populations are few, particularly those using eye tracking to measure attention. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for SAD includes interventions targeting attention, like exposure to eye contact, but the link between CBT and attention bias is largely unexplored. This study investigated attention bias in youth with SAD and the association with outcome from CBT. Latency to attend to pictures of faces with diffe

Emotion regulation related neural predictors of cognitive behavioral therapy response in social anxiety disorder.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterized by aberrant prefrontal activity during reappraisal, an adaptive cognitive approach aimed at downregulating the automatic response evoked by a negative event. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is first-line psychotherapy for SAD, however, many remain symptomatic after treatment indicating baseline individual differences in neurofunctional activity may factor into CBT outcome. An emotion regulation strategy practiced in CBT is cognitive restructuring, a proxy for reappraisal. Therefore, neural response during reappraisal may serve as a brain-based

Social skills training for children with autism spectrum disorder using a robotic behavioral intervention system.

We designed a robot system that assisted in behavioral intervention programs of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The eight-session intervention program was based on the discrete trial teaching protocol and focused on two basic social skills: eye contact and facial emotion recognition. The robotic interactions occurred in four modules: training element query, recognition of human activity, coping-mode selection, and follow-up action. Children with ASD who were between 4 and 7 years old and who had verbal IQ ≥ 60 were recruited and randomly assigned to the treatment group (TG, n = 8

Clarifying the Behavioral Economics of Social Anxiety Disorder: Effects of Interpersonal Problems and Symptom Severity on Generosity.

Social anxiety disorder is associated with lower interpersonal warmth, possibly explaining its associated interpersonal impairment. Across two samples, we attempted to replicate previous findings that the disorder's constraint of interpersonal warmth can be detected via behavioral economic tasks. We also tested the test-retest stability of task indices. Results indicated that factors associated with social anxiety disorder (and not the disorder itself), such as the severity of social anxiety and more extreme interpersonal problems, lead to less generous behavior on the economic task examined.

Stereotype confirmation concerns predict dropout from cognitive behavioral therapy for social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: There are high attrition rates observed in efficacy studies for social anxiety disorder, and research has not identified consistent nor theoretically meaningful predictors of dropout. Pre-treatment symptom severity and demographic factors, such as age and gender, are sometimes predictive of dropout. The current study examines a theoretically meaningful predictor of attrition based on experiences associated with social group membership rather than differences between social group categories--fear of confirming stereotypes. METHODS: This is a secondary data analysis of a randomized

The effectiveness of hydrotherapy in the treatment of social and behavioral aspects of children with autism spectrum disorders: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are increasing in prevalence. Children with ASDs present with impairments in social interactions; communication; restricted, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior, interests, or activities; as well as motor delays. Hydrotherapy is used as a treatment for children with disabilities and motor delays. There have been no systematic reviews conducted on the effectiveness of hydrotherapy in children with ASDs. AIM: We aimed to examine the effectiveness of hydrotherapy on social interactions and behaviors in the treatment of children with ASDs.

Psychodynamic therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy in social anxiety disorder: a multicenter randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE Various approaches to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) have been shown to be effective for social anxiety disorder. For psychodynamic therapy, evidence for efficacy in this disorder is scant. The authors tested the efficacy of psychodynamic therapy and CBT in social anxiety disorder in a multicenter randomized controlled trial. METHOD In an outpatient setting, 495 patients with social anxiety disorder were randomly assigned to manual-guided CBT (N=209), manual-guided psychodynamic therapy (N=207), or a waiting list condition (N=79). Assessments were made at baseline and at end of t

Effects of a self-monitoring device on socially relevant behaviors in adolescents with Asperger disorder: a pilot study.

This article reports the results of two case studies. Two middle school-aged participants with high-functioning autism spectrum disorders were taught to self-monitor behaviors impacting their social acceptance by peers in their general education settings: oral self-stimulatory behaviors and conversation skills. Results indicate that the intervention was effective to some degree with both participants. As a result of the self-monitoring intervention, one participant decreased self-stimulatory behaviors; however, his data were highly variable throughout the study though lower on average during i

Frontal EEG asymmetry and symptom response to cognitive behavioral therapy in patients with social anxiety disorder.

Although previous studies have shown that socially anxious individuals exhibit greater relative right frontal electroencephalogram (EEG) activity at rest, no studies have investigated whether improvements in symptoms as a result of treatment are associated with concomitant changes in resting brain activity. Regional EEG activity was measured at rest in 23 patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD) before and after cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Results indicated that patients shifted significantly from greater relative right to greater relative left resting frontal brain activity from pr

Group cognitive behavior therapy for Japanese patients with social anxiety disorder: preliminary outcomes and their predictors.

BACKGROUND: A number of studies have provided strong evidence for the use of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) in the treatment of social anxiety disorder (SAD). However, all of the previous reports were from Europe and North America and it is unknown whether Western psychological therapies are effective for SAD in non-Western cultures. The present pilot study aimed to evaluate CBT program for SAD which was originally developed for Western patients, among Japanese patients. METHODS: Fifty-seven outpatients who participated in group CBT for SAD were evaluated using eight self-reported and one c

[The impact of various levels of social anxiety on the efficiency of a cognitive behavioral treatment of panic-agoraphobia disorder.].

This research aims at evaluating in individuals suffering from panic-agoraphobia disorder without social phobia the presence or not of various levels of social anxiety. The study also evaluates the impact of this symptomatic comorbidity on the efficiency of two modes of cognitive behaviorial treatment, namely an auto-directed treatment and a treatment directed by the therapist. The study attempts to determine if the application of a cognitive behavioral treatment program positively or negatively influences the various levels of anxiety. On the other hand, the study evaluates if levels of socia

Longitudinal examination of the behavioral, language, and social changes in a population of adolescents and young adults with autistic disorder.

This follow-up study evaluates the behavioral, language, and social outcomes in a population of autistic patients initially examined in childhood. We evaluated 102 (63%) of the 163 eligible subjects, including 54 adolescents (12-17 years of age) and 45 adults (> or = 18 years of age). Three patients had died in the interim. Behavior difficulties continued to be a problem in 69% of adolescents and adults. Thirty-five percent of adolescents and 49% of adults engaged in self-injurious behavior, and slightly more than 50% of adolescents and adults exhibited some stereotypic behaviors. Over 90% of

Anorexia Nervosa, Schizophrenia, and Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Review of the Role of Tanycytes in Individual and Social Behavior.

Located along the third ventricle of the hypothalamus, tanycytes are a type of glial cell that are prominent components of metabolic, homeostatic, and immunological signaling and transport. Behavioral deficits observed in disorders such as anorexia nervosa (AN), schizophrenia (SCZ), and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have been observed and can be linked to the various functions of tanycytes. This review investigates the association between tanycytes and AN, SCZ, and ASD, potentially giving insight into the pathogenesis of these disorders. Specifically, attention is paid to the role of tanycyte

Manualized versus treatment-as-usual cognitive behavioral therapy for social anxiety disorder: A comparative study.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to compare treatment outcomes of manualized cognitive behavioral therapy (MAN-CBT) with CBT treatment-as-usual (TAU-CBT) in patients with social anxiety disorder across two separate investigations. It was examined whether treatment effects differ between conditions after the total number of sessions, and whether manualized therapies would show better outcomes with equivalent dose of sessions. METHODS: All patients underwent CBT at the same outpatient treatment center. This secondary analysis utilizes data from two randomized controlled trials for the manualized CBT

Sex-specific cortical networks drive social behavior differences in an autism spectrum disorder model.

Social behavior is highly sensitive to brain network dysfunction caused by neuropsychiatric conditions like autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Some studies suggest that autistic females show fewer social skill impairments than autistic males. However, the relationship between sex differences in social behavior and sexually dimorphic brain neurophysiology in ASD remains unclear. We hypothesize that sex-specific changes in cortical neurophysiology drive the sexual dimorphism observed in social behavior for ASD. To test this, we used male and female Tsc2+/- mice, a genetic ASD model, to examine co

High-intensity mindfulness and cognitive behavioral group therapy for social anxiety disorder: Preliminary efficacy.

AIM: Cost and probability biases are known to predict improvements in symptoms of social anxiety disorder (SAD). This study developed a high-intensity mindfulness and cognitive behavioral group therapy (M-CBT) program-comprising mindfulness training, psychoeducation, cognitive restructuring, exposure exercises, and group sharing-designed to reduce these biases. The intervention was delivered in a group format, and its preliminary efficacy in patients with SAD was evaluated in a pilot single-arm trial. METHODS: Patients (N = 10) diagnosed with SAD through a structured clinical interview partic

Elevated testosterone and prosocial behavior in female patients with borderline personality disorder independent of social exclusion.

OBJECTIVE: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is marked by unstable relationships and fear of abandonment. Earlier studies suggest that patients with BPD are highly sensitive to social exclusion and show deficits in trust and cooperation. The hormone testosterone influences such prosocial behavior and regulates aggressive and caring behavior. Previous studies show elevated testosterone levels in female patients with BPD at baseline and after psychosocial stress, while results after social exclusion are missing. METHOD: We investigated the effects of social exclusion on prosocial behavior (
