Are social organizational factors independently associated with a current bacterial sexually transmitted infection among urban adolescents and young adults?

This study explored the relationship between the social organization of neighborhoods including informal social control and social cohesion and a current bacterial sexually transmitted infection (STI) among adolescents and young adults in one U.S. urban setting. Data for the current study were collected from April 2004 to April 2007 in a cross-sectional household study. The target population included English-speaking, sexually-active persons between the ages of 15 and 24 years who resided in 486 neighborhoods. The study sample included 599 participants from 63 neighborhoods. A current bacteria

"Despite the Differences, We Were All the Same". Group Cohesion in Diagnosis-Specific and Transdiagnostic CBT Groups for Anxiety and Depression: A Qualitative Study.

Group cohesion refers to a sense of belonging, mutual support and identification with other group members. Group cohesion has been associated with better outcomes, lower drop-out rates, more interpersonal support and better participation in psychotherapy. Nevertheless, the role of group cohesion in CBT has not yet received much attention. The rationale for delivering CBT in groups is that patients can model themselves through each other due to their similarities in symptoms. However, there has recently been a shift towards transdiagnostic CBT protocols, in which patients with varied diagnoses

Associations of neighborhood built and social environments with frailty among mid-to-older aged Australian adults.

AIM: Neighborhood environmental attributes are associated with physical activity and health status. We examined cross-sectional associations of built and social environmental attributes with frailty among community-dwelling mid-to-older aged adults in Australia. METHODS: Data from 3419 adults aged 50-74 years living in 200 neighborhoods in Brisbane, Australia, were used. Frailty status was assessed by a frailty index comprising 32 items. The built environment attributes examined were residential density, street connectivity, land use mix, park area and bus stop density. Self-reported levels o

Psychometric properties of the community social capital measure: evidence from the JAGES project.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to test the factor structure of the social capital scale used in the Japan Evaluation Gerontological Study (JAGES) considering individual and community level, measurement invariance between levels, internal consistency of dimensions, and nomological validity. This instrument was developed within a multilevel framework to explore the relationship between social capital and individual outcomes but has only been validated at the community level. METHOD: Sample included 194566 Japanese participants grouped in 1049 communities, aged 65 years and older. RESULTS: Analysi

Cohesion and adherence in exercise groups of patients with chronic heart diseases - a prospective study.

Objective: In cardiac rehabilitation, long-term adherence to exercise prescription is an important prerequisite to reduce mortality and the risk of recurrent cardiac events. Cohesion seems to be an important predictor of adherence when exercise is conducted in prevention settings, but in clinical settings, this relationship is currently unknown. To address this gap, the goal of this study was to determine the relationship between group cohesion and adherence in cardiac rehabilitation programs considering the duration of membership as a moderator.Design: The study was conducted with 474 partici

Family cohesion and expressiveness promote resilience to the stress of pediatric bone marrow transplant: a preliminary report.

The effect of perceived family environment as a determinant of adjustment in children undergoing bone marrow transplant (BMT) was assessed in a prospective, longitudinal study. Measures of patients' social competence, behavior problems, and self-esteem, along with perceived family conflict, cohesion, and expressiveness, were obtained before hospital admission for BMT and again in the period 6 to 12 months post-BMT. Significant declines were observed in post-BMT social competence and overall self-concept. Before BMT, perceptions of family conflict showed a moderate inverse correlation with pati

Beyond Health Effects?: Examining the Social Consequences of Community Levels of Uninsurance Pre-ACA.

The lack of health insurance is traditionally considered a problem faced by individuals and their families. However, because of the geographically bounded organization and funding of healthcare in the United States, levels of uninsurance in a community may affect everyone living there. Health economists have examined how the effects of uninsurance spillover from the uninsured to the insured, negatively affecting healthcare access and quality for the insured. We extend research on uninsurance into the domain of sociologists by theorizing how uninsurance might exacerbate social inequalities and

The Role of the Neighborhood Social Environment on Adulthood Depression: Insights from Midlife in the United States III.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a serious public health concern in the United States. Prior research has shown that neighborhood characteristics serve as protective factors against depression in adolescents. Few studies have examined the association between perceived neighborhood characteristics and depression during middle and older adulthood. We examined the association between each perceived neighborhood social environment (i.e., social cohesion and safety) and the presence of MDD among Midlife in the United States III (MIDUS) participants (n = 2,435, mean age = 63.6 years, Female = 54.4

Tuning in to real-time social interactions in macaques.

Movement synchronization between individuals has been implicated in reinforcing their cohesion. How might such interindividual motor entrainment be controlled by the social brain? The answer remains elusive owing largely to the lack of suitable animal models in which direct neural recordings are available. Here, we show that macaque monkeys exhibit social motor entrainment without human prompting. We found that repetitive arm movements for horizontal bar sliding were phase coherent between two monkeys. The nature of motor entrainment was specific to animal pairs, consistent across days, depend

Beyond the huddle: a comparative analysis of sense of belonging, group cohesion and interpersonal closeness in rugby, soccer, and basketball.

This study investigates the psychosocial dynamics of team sports by comparing levels of sense of belonging, group cohesion, and perceived interpersonal closeness among athletes playing rugby, soccer, and basketball. Guided by Social Identity Theory, the research explored how the structural characteristics of each sport influence group bonds and individual feelings of inclusion. We hypothesized that the highly interdependent nature of rugby would lead to stronger group-level and individual-level connections than those found in soccer and basketball. Additionally, we posited that both cohesion a

Prenatal Psychosocial Stressors and Blood Pressure Across 4 Years Postpartum.

BACKGROUND: Psychosocial stress is a cardiovascular risk factor; however, little is known about whether prenatal psychosocial stressors influence postpartum cardiovascular health. We aimed to examine the associations of multiple measures of prenatal psychosocial stress on maternal blood pressure (BP) in the first 4 years after birth. METHODS: Among 225 MADRES cohort (Maternal and Developmental Risks From Environmental and Social Stressors) participants, we examined associations of average prenatal Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression (CES-D) scores, and

Findings from Encontros: a multilevel STI/HIV intervention to increase condom use, reduce STI, and change the social environment among sex workers in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infection (STI)/HIV prevention programs, which do not modify social structural contexts that contribute to risk of STI/HIV may fail to bring about improvements in health, particularly among groups who experience discrimination and exclusion from public life. We conducted a multilevel intervention with sex workers, including improved clinical care and community-mobilizing strategies to modify social structural factors that shape sexual behavior, to improve condom use and reduce incident STI. METHODS: We followed 420 sex workers participating in the Encontros in

Association of physical and social neighbourhood environment with movement behaviours among schoolchildren: a compositional data analysis.

BACKGROUND: How schoolchildren distribute their time between movement behaviours may be impacted by the neighbourhood environment. Few studies have investigated the associations between the physical and social environment and the full movement behaviour composition, including times spent in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), light physical activity (LPA), sedentary behaviour, and sleep, and their findings are inconsistent. Therefore, our aim was to investigate this association in a large, national-representative sample of schoolchildren from major cities and regional/remote areas.

Effects of parent and family characteristics on treatment outcome of anxious children.

This study examines relations between family functioning, parenting stress, parental psychopathology, and treatment outcome. Participants included 61 children (ages 7-11 years) with features or diagnoses of separation anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and/or social phobia. Treatment conditions included group cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and no-treatment control. Higher family cohesion at baseline was associated with significantly greater decreases in child anxiety at posttreatment for participants who received CBT, while no association was found for the no-treatment control

Religiosity and political worldviews as protective factors during an ongoing national trauma.

This study examined religiosity and political worldviews, specifically government support, as socio-cultural mechanisms that buffer anxiety and promote coping during an ongoing war. Drawing on Terror Management Theory (TMT) and Conservation of Resources (COR) theory, we hypothesized that these orientations would be associated with higher individual and collective coping: individual resilience, societal resilience, perceived social cohesion, and hope, and with lower psychological distress, as well as better preservation of these resources over time. Data were collected across seven waves during

Social Network Analysis of the Schistosomiasis control program in two local government areas in Oyo state, Nigeria: Insights for NTD elimination plans.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is one of the neglected tropical diseases targeted for elimination by 2030. Achieving disease elimination requires collaboration between stakeholders, country ownership and the involvement of community-level stakeholders. The state of stakeholder relationship determines the ease and timeliness of meeting disease elimination targets. Mapping stakeholder relationships is critical for assessing gaps in the schistosomiasis control program implementation, and providing a roadmap for improved stakeholder cohesion. The study aimed to measure the cohesiveness of the contact

Adaptability and learning Intraprofessional collaboration of residents during the COVID-19 pandemic.

CONTEXT: The COVID-19 pandemic created a worldwide public health emergency, in which hospitals created new COVID departments and doctors from different disciplines had to work together. In the Netherlands, a large proportion of doctors in these departments were residents. With knowledge of the disease developing only gradually, the influx of COVID-19 patients called for adaptability, innovative work behavior, and intraprofessional collaboration (intraPC) between residents and between residents and medical specialists. RESEARCH GOAL: This study investigates how the delivery of COVID-19 care in

PTSD and parental functioning: The protective role of neighborhood cohesion among Black and White veterans.

OBJECTIVE: Caregivers with a history of trauma exposure may struggle to parent effectively, particularly when symptoms of PTSD are prominent. Consequently, identifying factors that buffer associations between PTSD and poor parental functioning is critical to help trauma-exposed families thrive. One important source of resilience may spring from being part of a socially cohesive neighborhood that offers positive social connections and resources. The purpose of this study was to examine whether greater neighborhood cohesion buffers associations between PTSD and perceived parental functioning. M
