[Communicative and social-adaptive profile in children with autism spectrum disorder: a new approach based on the DSM-5 criteria].

INTRODUCTION: Following the adoption of the new international diagnosis classification from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5), autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been established as a dimensional category that includes other disorders that were previously considered as separate entities. Previous research has shown that some people with this disorder exhibit different communicative and linguistic profiles. Therefore, contradictory results could be found among people who receive the same diagnosis. AIM: To distinguish structural language aspects (expression and comprehension), inte

Long-term effects of PECS on social-communicative skills of children with autism spectrum disorders: a follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) is a popular augmentative communication system frequently used with 'nonverbal' children with autism. Several studies suggested that PECS could represent an effective tool for promoting improvement of several social-communicative skills. Only sparse evidence is instead available on the long-term effectiveness of this treatment system. AIMS: To test the long-term effects of PECS, for which a follow-up study was conducted by assessing social-communicative skills in nonverbal preschool children with autism after 12 months from treatmen

Teaching multi-step requesting and social communication to two children with autism spectrum disorders with three AAC options.

The present study involved comparing the acquisition of multi-step requesting and social communication across three AAC options: manual signing (MS), picture exchange (PE), and speech-generating devices (SGDs). Preference for each option was also assessed. The participants were two children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) who had previously been taught to use each option to request preferred items. Intervention was implemented in an alternating-treatments design. During baseline, participants demonstrated low levels of correct communicative responding. With intervention, both participants

Estimating the burden of musculoskeletal disorders in the community: the comparative prevalence of symptoms at different anatomical sites, and the relation to social deprivation.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologically-based rheumatology healthcare needs assessment requires an understanding of the incidence and prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders in the community, of the reasons why people consult in primary care, and of the proportion of people who would benefit from referral to secondary care and paramedical services. This paper reports the first phase of such a needs assessment exercise. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE: To estimate the relative frequency of musculoskeletal pain in different, and multiple, anatomical sites in the adult population. SETTING: Three general practices in

Assessing the impact of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) over the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex on social communication in children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

INTRODUCTION: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is characterized by persistent difficulties in social communication and behavior regulation. Although behavioral and pharmacological interventions exist, many yield limited improvements in these core areas. Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS), a non-invasive neuromodulation technique, has shown potential for enhancing social and cognitive functions in individuals with ASD. This study evaluated the impact of tDCS, applied over the Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex (DLPFC), on social communication and behavioral outcomes in children and adoles

Abnormal functional connectivity of the reward network is associated with social communication impairments in autism spectrum disorder: A large-scale multi-site resting-state fMRI study.

BACKGROUND: The social motivation hypothesis proposes that the social deficits of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are related to reward system dysfunction. However, functional connectivity (FC) patterns of the reward network in ASD have not been systematically explored yet. METHODS: The reward network was defined as eight regions of interest (ROIs) per hemisphere, including the nucleus accumbens (NAc), caudate, putamen, anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC), orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), amygdala, and insula. We computed both the ROI-wise resting-state FC and se

Knowledge, attitudes, and practices towards fetal alcohol spectrum disorder in the New Zealand social and community sector: An online survey.

Background: Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder but may be underrecognized and misunderstood by people who provide health and social support services. The aim of the research is to understand the FASD knowledge, attitudes, and practices among people employed by the social and community sector in New Zealand. Methods: We conducted an online survey of people working in the New Zealand social and community sector (i.e., social workers, support workers). The survey focused on the following areas: awareness of FASD; knowledge and beliefs about FASD; the im

Social integration in young adulthood and the subsequent onset of substance use and disorders among a community population of urban African Americans.

AIMS: This paper examines the association between social integration in young adulthood and the later onset of substance use and disorders through mid-adulthood. Design Data come from a community cohort of African Americans followed longitudinally from age 6-42 years with four assessment periods. SETTING: The cohort all lived in the Woodlawn neighborhood of Chicago in 1966, an urban disadvantaged setting. PARTICIPANTS: All Woodlawn first graders in 1966 were asked to participate; 13 families declined (n = 1242). MEASUREMENT: Substance use was measured via interview at age 42 and includes th

Brief report: IQ split predicts social symptoms and communication abilities in high-functioning children with autism spectrum disorders.

We investigated the relationship of discrepancies between VIQ and NVIQ (IQ split) to autism symptoms and adaptive behavior in a sample of high-functioning (mean FSIQ = 98.5) school-age children with autism spectrum disorders divided into three groups: discrepantly high VIQ (n = 18); discrepantly high NVIQ (n = 24); and equivalent VIQ and NVIQ (n = 36). Discrepantly high VIQ and NVIQ were associated with autism social symptoms but not communication symptoms or repetitive behaviors. Higher VIQ and NVIQ were associated with better adaptive communication but not socialization or Daily Living Skill

Incidental learning and social-communicative abilities in children with developmental language disorder: Further evaluating the implicit learning deficit hypothesis.

BACKGROUND: The implicit learning deficit hypothesis claims that impaired implicit learning underlies deficits in social-communicative abilities associated with developmental language disorder (DLD). However, previous research testing this hypothesis revealed inconsistent results and largely used process-impure sequential learning tasks. AIMS: This study further tested the hypothesis using a novel process-pure implicit associative learning task. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: The performance of 9- to 13-year-old children with (N = 60) and without DLD (typically developing, TD, N = 52) on a continge

Social Communication in Ras Pathway Disorders: A Comprehensive Review From Genetics to Behavior in Neurofibromatosis Type 1 and Noonan Syndrome.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and Noonan syndrome (NS) are neurogenetic syndromes caused by pathogenetic variants encoding components of the Ras-ERK-MAPK (Ras/extracellular signal-regulated kinase/mitogen-activated protein kinase) signaling pathway (Ras pathway). NF1 and NS are associated with differences in social communication and related neuropsychiatric risks. During the last decade, there has been growing interest in Ras-linked syndromes as models to understand social communication deficits and autism spectrum disorder. We systematically review the literature between 2010 and 2023 focusi

Development and Initial Pilot Testing of a fully integrated treatment for comorbid social anxiety disorder and alcohol use disorder in a community-based SUD clinic setting.

OBJECTIVES: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) are highly comorbid and this comorbidity is associated with poorer clinical outcomes. Integrating exposure-based treatment for SAD into the context of typical AUD treatment programs should improve engagement and treatment outcomes for this population. METHODS: After initial development of a fully integrated, intensive outpatient program (IOP) for individuals with comorbid SAD and AUD, patients with SAD and AUD were recruited from a community-based SUD specialty clinic (N = 56) and randomized to either (a) usual care (UC)

Environmental, Social, and Health Burdens in relation to Sleep-Disordered Breathing among Patients of Community-Based Health Centers in the United States.

IMPORTANCE: Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is preventable but underdiagnosed, with disparities among sociodemographic groups with limited material and social resources, partly driven by community-level environmental and social conditions along with healthcare-related factors. OBJECTIVES: We sought to investigate associations between multifactorial community-level environmental, social, and health burdens and SDB prevalence. We also determined effect modification by age, sex, race, and ethnicity. DESIGN SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Cross-sectional analysis of electronic health records (EHR) da

Describing the Profile of Diagnostic Features in Autistic Adults Using an Abbreviated Version of the Diagnostic Interview for Social and Communication Disorders (DISCO-Abbreviated).

The rate of diagnosis of autism in adults has increased over recent years; however, the profile of behaviours in these individuals is less understood than the profile seen in those diagnosed in childhood. Better understanding of this profile will be essential to identify and remove potential barriers to diagnosis. Using an abbreviated form of the Diagnostic Interview for Social and Communication Disorders, comparisons were drawn between the profile of a sample of able adults diagnosed in adulthood and the profile of a sample of able children. Results revealed both similarities and differences.

INCOG 2.0 Guidelines for Cognitive Rehabilitation Following Traumatic Brain Injury, Part IV: Cognitive-Communication and Social Cognition Disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Moderate to severe traumatic brain injury causes significant cognitive impairments, including impairments in social cognition, the ability to recognize others' emotions, and infer others' thoughts. These cognitive impairments can have profound negative effects on communication functions, resulting in a cognitive-communication disorder. Cognitive-communication disorders can significantly limit a person's ability to socialize, work, and study, and thus are critical targets for intervention. This article presents the updated INCOG 2.0 recommendations for management of cognitive-comm
