Belonging and life satisfaction among migrants: the roles of identity, social comparison, and discrimination.

This study examines how belonging, identity orientations, social comparison patterns, and perceived discrimination are associated with life satisfaction among Turkish migrants in the Netherlands. The analysis is based on cross-sectional survey data from 1,006 respondents. Ordered logit models are used to assess the associations between identity orientations, comparison patterns, perceived discrimination, and two outcomes: life satisfaction and sense of belonging to the Netherlands. The results indicate that identifying as Dutch or as a world citizen, as well as placing greater importance on co

The Network Model of Mentalization, Social Vulnerability, and the Self in Autism: A Comparison With Neurotypical Adults.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by alterations in social understanding and self-related experience that overlap with broader dimensions of psychosocial vulnerability. These domains are tightly interconnected, motivating the use of analytic approaches that can capture their organization as complex associations rather than as isolated dimensions. We applied network analysis to autistic adults (N = 156) and demographically matched neurotypical controls (N = 454). Gaussian graphical models were estimated using sum scores of psychosocial constructs, and networks were compared using

Social skills in children with RASopathies: a comparison of Noonan syndrome and neurofibromatosis type 1.

BACKGROUND: Gene mutations within the RAS-MAPK signaling cascade result in Noonan syndrome (NS), neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), and related disorders. Recent research has documented an increased risk for social difficulties and features of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) among children with these conditions. Despite this emerging evidence, the neuropsychological characteristics associated with social skills deficits are not well understood, particularly for children with NS. METHODS: Parents of children with NS (n = 39), NF1 (n = 39), and unaffected siblings (n = 32) between the ages of 8 and

Neighborhood informal social control and child maltreatment: A comparison of protective and punitive approaches.

This paper introduces a new measure of informal social control of child maltreatment (henceforth ISC_CM) by neighbors. Research literature typically uses collective efficacy (Sampson, Raudenbush, & Earls, 1997) to examine neighborhood informal social control. We argue that double standards about the application of informal social control to family versus street crime requires a measure of informal social control specific to child maltreatment. We also argue that how neighbors intervene may matter as much as whether they intervene. Neighbors may engage in ISC_CM aimed at protecting the child an

Comparison of attention training and cognitive therapy in the treatment of social phobia: a preliminary investigation.

BACKGROUND: Prominent models of social phobia highlight the role played by attentional factors, such as self-focused attention, in the development and maintenance of social phobia. Elevated self-focused attention is associated with increases in self-rated anxiety. Treatments that aim to modify and change attentional processes, specifically self-focused attention, will have a direct effect on social phobia symptoms. Thus, Attention Training targets attentional focus. AIM: The present study aimed to investigate the efficacy of Attention Training in comparison to an established treatment for soc

Evaluation of children with selective mutism and social phobia: a comparison of psychological and psychophysiological arousal.

Although children with social phobia (SP) and selective mutism (SM) present similarly in a clinical setting, it remains unclear whether children with SM are unable to speak due to overwhelming anxiety, or whether withholding speech functions as an avoidance mechanism. A total of 35 children (ages 5-12 years) with either SM (n = 10), SP (n = 11), or no diagnosis (n = 14) participated in the current study. Measurements included clinician, child, and parent ratings as well as behavioral observations and psychophysiological measures. Independent evaluators and clinicians rated children with SM as

Predicting anxious response to a social challenge and hyperventilation: comparison of the ASI and ASI-3.

This study compared the predictive ability of the original ASI to the ASI-3 and measures of trait and social anxiety in two challenge conditions; hyperventilation or a social challenge. During hyperventilation, the ASI-3 social concerns subscale was a better predictor than the subscales of the original ASI and measures of general trait and social anxiety. During the social manipulation, results indicated the ASI-3 social concerns subscale and the social anxiety measure were significant predictors of anxious response. Results provide evidence that the ASI-3 is an improvement over the original A

Living status and psychological well-being: social comparison as a moderator in later life.

OBJECTIVES: Older adults who live alone have been found to have lower psychological well-being than their age peers who live with someone. This study examined whether downward social comparison, i.e. perceiving oneself as better than others, would moderate this relationship. METHOD: A total of 205 Chinese aged 60 years or over were recruited. They rated themselves and 'someone their age' on a list of personal descriptions. Downward social comparison was defined as the extent to which their ratings of self were better than ratings of age peers. Life satisfaction and depression were measured by

Factors important for the measurement of social comparison in chronic illness: a mixed-methods study.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to examine social comparison in illness using a mixed-methods approach that combined inductive exploration of how people used social comparison in this self-help group with a quantitative study of social comparison processes and their relationship to quality of life. METHODS: The qualitative study involved 15 semi-structured interviews with people with Ménière's disease. Themes from the analysis of the interviews informed the development of the Social Comparison in Illness Scale (SCIS), which was then validated in a questionnaire study, in which participa

A comparison of attentional biases and memory biases in women with social phobia and major depression.

Cognitive processes play an important role in the etiology and maintenance of anxiety and depression. Current theories differ, however, in their predictions regarding the occurrence of attentional biases and memory biases in depression and anxiety. To allow for a systematic comparison of disorders and cognitive processes, 117 women (35 with generalized social phobia, 27 with major depression, and 55 healthy controls) participated in a test of visual attention (visual search), an explicit memory test (free recall), and an implicit memory test (anagram solving). Both clinical groups exhibited at

A comparison of the efficacy of clonazepam and cognitive-behavioral group therapy for the treatment of social phobia.

There is a growing body of evidence that social phobia may be treated effectively by either pharmacologic or cognitive-behavioral interventions. but few studies have examined the relative benefits of these treatments. In this study, we examined the relative efficacy of pharmacotherapy with clonazepam and cognitive-behavioral group therapy (CBGT) for treating social phobia. In addition, we examined potential predictors of differential treatment response. Outpatients meeting Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (3rd ed., revised) criteria for social phobia were randomly assigned

Social isolation and sensory difficulties: a comparison of populations from Mexico and the United States.

OBJECTIVES: This cross-sectional study examined differences in the prevalence of sensory difficulties (vision/hearing) and concurrent social isolation among older adults from Mexico and the United States. METHODS: Using data from the Mexican Health and Aging Study (age 50+) and the Health and Retirement Study (ages 51+), we explored how sensory difficulties are related to social isolation among Mexican, U.S. Hispanic, and U.S. non-Hispanic older adults. Social isolation was measured by assessing whether participants lived alone, had weekly contact with children and friends/relatives, and part

Medial prefrontal cortex and striatum mediate the influence of social comparison on the decision process.

We compared private and social decision making to investigate the neural underpinnings of the effect of social comparison on risky choices. We measured brain activity using functional MRI while participants chose between two lotteries: in the private condition, they observed the outcome of the unchosen lottery, and in the social condition, the outcome of the lottery chosen by another person. The striatum, a reward-related brain structure, showed higher activity when participants won more than their counterpart (social gains) compared with winning in isolation and lower activity when they won l

Social skills assessment in young children with autism: a comparison evaluation of the SSRS and PKBS.

Impairment in the development of reciprocal social interaction and other social skills is one of the defining characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). There is a need for assessment tools that will help guide social skills interventions and document outcomes. The purpose of this study was to examine the potential usefulness of two behavior rating scales with young children with ASD in an early childhood program. The results showed that the two social skills measures, the SSRS and PKBS, had adequate psychometric properties in terms of internal consistency, construct validity, converg

A comparison of the effects of citalopram and moclobemide on resting brain perfusion in social anxiety disorder.

INTRODUCTION: The serotonin specific reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) citalopram and the reversible mono-amine oxidase-A inhibitor (RIMA) moclobemide have both been used successfully for the treatment of social anxiety disorder (SAD). In this study we investigate the effects of these compounds on resting brain function using single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). METHODS: Subjects meeting DSM-IV criteria for SAD underwent regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) SPECT using Tc-HMPAO at baseline and after 8 weeks of treatment with either citalopram or moclobemide. Using statistical parametric

Cognitive assessment of social anxiety: a comparison of self-report and thought listing methods.

The goal of the present study was to compare 2 cognitive assessment methods for social anxiety: a thought listing and a self-report method. The focus of this study was on the convergent and divergent validity of these methods using a multi-trait multi-method approach. Furthermore, treatment sensitivity was explored. Fifty-eight patients with social phobia completed thought listings followed by 2 different social stress tasks before and after an exposure group treatment (n = 33), or following a waiting period (n = 25). One task consisted of speaking in front of 2 confederates while the other ta

Specificity of cognitive structure in depression and social phobia: a comparison of interpersonal and achievement content.

BACKGROUND: The comorbidity between the mood and anxiety is extensive and it is probable that individuals with these disorders share a number of cognitive characteristics. However, comorbidity rates with depression are not uniform among the various anxiety disorders. This study examined the common and distinguishing features of self-schematic structure in major depressive disorder and social anxiety compared to other anxiety disorders in general and to no psychiatric disturbance. METHODS: Participants completed the Psychological Distance Scaling Task, which provided an index of the cognitive

We can do it: the interplay of construal orientation and social comparisons under threat.

The authors investigated how a collective self-construal orientation in combination with positive social comparisons "turns off" the negative effects of stereotype threat. Specifically, Experiment 1 demonstrated that stereotype threat led to increased accessibility of participants' collective self ("we"). Experiment 2 showed that this feeling of "we-ness" in the stereotype threat condition centered on the participants' stereotyped group membership and not on other important social groups (e.g., students). Experiment 3 indicated that in threat situations, when participants' collective self is a

Cognitive rehearsal in the treatment of obesity: a comparison against cue avoidance and social pressure.

The effects of a cognitive (cognitive rehearsal) in the treatment of obesity were evaluated in a 16-week weight reduction programme by comparison against two other treatments, cue avoidance, and social pressure. Fifty-three obese females, categorised (on the basis of their weight loss after 3 weeks of dieting) as either high losers or low losers, were randomly assigned to one of these three treatments. Posttreatment weight losses were significantly greater for high losers than low losers, and for subjects in cue avoidance than those in social pressure. Those in cue avoidance went over their di

Reducing social media use decreases loneliness regardless of gender or level of social comparisons in youth with anxiety and depression: A randomized controlled trial.

Loneliness and feeling socially isolated is especially problematic in youth experiencing anxiety and depressive symptoms. Social media use (SMU) was designed to promote social connection, but correlational studies suggest it is often associated with greater loneliness and mental health problems, with girls and those who engage in more frequent upward social comparisons being more negatively impacted by SMU. However, experimental studies are needed to gain insights into causality, especially in a vulnerable population of youth with affective distress. The present study experimentally investigat
