Comparing social attention in autism and amygdala lesions: effects of stimulus and task condition.

The amygdala plays a critical role in orienting gaze and attention to socially salient stimuli. Previous work has demonstrated that SM a patient with rare bilateral amygdala lesions, fails to fixate and make use of information from the eyes in faces. Amygdala dysfunction has also been implicated as a contributing factor in autism spectrum disorders (ASD), consistent with some reports of reduced eye fixations in ASD. Yet, detailed comparisons between ASD and patients with amygdala lesions have not been undertaken. Here we carried out such a comparison, using eye tracking to complex social scene

Ketamine attenuates the effects of intermittent social defeat on anxiety, social interaction and cocaine-induced conditioned place preference in male mice.

Mice exposed to intermittent social defeat (ISD) stress in late adolescence exhibit short-term anxiety- and depression-like behaviours and demonstrate greater sensitivity to the rewarding effects of cocaine in adulthood. Furthermore, the development of depression-like symptoms predicts subsequent enhanced vulnerability to cocaine reward. The aim of this study was to investigate whether ketamine, a non-competitive glutamate N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist with antidepressant properties, could prevent the short-term effects of ISD on anxiety- and depression-like behaviours and th

Violence in harm reduction: Exploring the social, political, and emotional conditions of harm reduction work.

Harm reduction professionals strive to reduce the health, social, and legal consequences associated with drug use in contexts permeated by violence. Building on fieldwork in Paris and Barcelona, we examine how they make sense of this violence. In Paris, the discussion of violence primarily hinges on the narratives of suffering from people who use drugs and the obstacles posed by the political context. In Barcelona, the narrative emphasizes precariousness and deficiencies in organizational violence management, which intensifies perceptions of violence. Moving beyond polarized understandings of

Social isolation, loneliness, and multi-system medical conditions: phenome-wide association and disease-trajectory analyses.

BACKGROUND: Social isolation and loneliness have emerged as important modifiable risk factors for mental disorders, posing significant public health challenges. However, they have not been comprehensively investigated in relation to multisystemic diseases and their temporal trajectories. We aimed to systematically identify the health outcomes associated with social isolation and loneliness and characterize their disease trajectories and comorbidity networks. METHODS: A total of 466,547 participants (mean age: 56.5 ± 8.1, 54.6% females) with available information on social isolation and loneli

Exploring Pain on Social Media: Observational Study on Perceptions and Discussions of Chronic Pain Conditions.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain, affecting 30.3% of the global population, constitutes a major public health and social challenge. It is associated with disability, emotional distress, and diminished quality of life. Conditions, such as fibromyalgia, headache, paraplegia, neuropathy, and multiple sclerosis are characterized by persistent pain and limited social and medical understanding. This contributes to patient isolation and increases mental health burden. In recent years, social media, particularly X (formerly Twitter), has emerged as a key space for analyzing health-related perceptions and expe

Interventions to improve social circumstances of people with mental health conditions: a rapid evidence synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Poor social circumstances can induce, exacerbate and prolong symptoms of mental health conditions, while having a mental health condition can also lead to worse social outcomes. Many people with mental health conditions prioritise improvement in social and functional outcomes over reduction in clinical symptoms. Interventions that improve social circumstances in this population should thus be considered a priority for research and policy. METHODS: This rapid evidence synthesis reports on randomised controlled trials of interventions to improve social circumstances across eight soc

Unfavorable health conditions associated with high social anxiety in the elderly: a community-based study.

BACKGROUND: There is little knowledge concerning unfavorable health conditions (UHC) associated with high level of social phobia/anxiety symptoms (SPAS) in the elderly. AIMS: This cross-sectional community-based study examines five categories of UHC related to high SPAS in individuals aged 75/76 years compared with controls with lower SPAS. METHODS: The study was based on data from the Oslo Health Study. Based on self-rating of the MINI-SPIN screening instrument, 246 individuals (9%) had high SPAS (cases) and 2464 (91%) had lower SPAS (controls). The socio-demographic, somatic, lifestyle, so

Pain, functional status, social function and conditions of habitation in elderly unilateraly lower limb amputees.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Few authors are involved in home rehabilitation of amputees or their reintegration into the community. It has been remarked that there is a discontinuity between the phases of the amputee rehabilitation in Serbia. The aim of the study was to establish pain characteristics and functional status of amputees two months after the amputation and to determine their social function and the conditions of their habitation. METHODS: This prospective observation study involved 38 elderly amputees with unilateral lower limb amputations. The patients were tested at the hospital on discharg

Precarious employment conditions affect work content in education and social work: results of work analyses.

Work content is adversely affected by precarious employment conditions, with consequences for workers and clients/customers. Three examples are taken from professions involving long-term relations between workers and clients. Adult education teachers hired on short-term contracts to teach primarily immigrant populations prepare their courses under less favorable conditions than regular teachers and their employment context foments hostility among teachers. Special education technicians are hired on a seasonal basis which interferes with their ability to coordinate and plan their efforts in col

Prenatal stress and prepuberal social rearing conditions interact to determine sexual behavior in male rats.

The two major categories of factors known to influence adult sexual behavior potentials are the relative amounts of androgen present during specific stages of perinatal ontogeny and adequate social stimulation during prepuberal development. The possible interaction between these two was evaluated by characterizing the ejaculatory and lordotic behavior potentials of prenatally stressed and control male rats that had been weaned at 16 days of age and raised either in total social isolation or with a same-age female, a control male, or a prenatally stressed male. The decrement in male sexual beha

Cultivated meat at industrial scale: Hygiene, externalized burdens, and the social conditions of meat wholesomeness.

This commentary asks whether industrial-scale cultivated meat can function as a controllable meat production platform that reduces the ecological, sanitary, and social burdens displaced by intensive livestock. The question is whether cultivated meat can improve the conditions that produce meat wholesomeness, safety, and acceptability. Intensive livestock is not only an emissions and land use issue. It is also a production system that concentrates animal suffering, microbial risk, hazardous labor, and unequal exposure among workers and communities, while tying animal protein to practices many e

The Prevalence of Co-Occurring Conditions and an Exploration of Social Factors Influencing Health in Down Syndrome.

Measuring health, a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity, in Down syndrome (DS) was recently achieved through creation of a new health measure. However, additional information on health-related medical topics and how health measurement varies in demographic groups from that cohort has not been presented. We surveyed caregivers of individuals age 0-21 with Down syndrome (DS) from a national sample about the health of their son or daughter with DS as part of a broader study to create a valid, reliable health measure in DS. Social anxiety is associated with greater autonomic and visuocortical generalization of conditioned aversive responses to faces.

Aversive generalization learning is an adaptive trait that is necessary for survival in a dynamic environment. However, this process is exaggerated in persons with anxiety disorders, leading to overgeneralization of learned threat associations, hyperreactive fight-or-flight responses, and persistent avoidance. Patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD) exhibit impaired conditioned threat discrimination particularly with respect to social stimuli, such as faces. The present study examined the relationship between social anxiety and generalization of visuocortical and pupil dilation responses t

Social cognition and bulimic symptoms in male undergraduate students: The conditional effect of emotion dysregulation.

OBJECTIVE: Research demonstrates associations between poor social cognition and eating disorder (ED) pathology. Moreover, research shows that individuals with EDs struggle with emotion regulation. The present study replicates and extends the literature on social cognition and ED pathology, which previously focused largely on symptoms of anorexia nervosa among women while the present study focuses on symptoms of bulimia nervosa among undergraduate men. Further, this study tests the hypothesis that better emotion regulation mitigates the association between social cognition and ED pathology. ME

Perspectives of older adults with a chronic condition on functioning, social participation and health: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Problems with mobility, functioning and social participation make living independently difficult for frail older adults. To continue living independently, therapy adherence is a prerequisite. The causes for non-adherence among older adults are multiple and complex, which is why insight into older adults' perspectives regarding their functioning is an essential factor to increase therapy adherence. This study investigates the perspectives of older adults on their functioning, social participation and health, and the factors influencing these elements. METHODS: We conducted a qualit

People with activity limitations' perceptions of their health condition and their relationships with social participation and experienced autonomy.

BACKGROUND: People with activity limitations participate less in society, which may be due to both societal barriers and personal factors. The aim of this study was to examine the role of one specific personal factor, namely the perceptions that people have of their health condition. We hypothesized that perceptions of more personal control and less negative consequences increase the likelihood of participation in social activities and of experiencing autonomy in participation. METHODS: Survey data of 1681 people with activity limitations participating in a Dutch nationwide panel-study were a

Social aversive conditioning in youth at clinical high risk for psychosis and with psychosis: An ERP study.

BACKGROUND: Social cognition and emotion processing are compromised in schizophrenia. Disruptions in these domains may also be present during the psychosis-risk state. Aversive conditioning is an established translational research paradigm to investigate affective reactivity and learning. Using an aversive conditioning ERP paradigm with social cues, we examined whether psychosis patients and at-risk youths differentially respond to aversively conditioned faces. METHODS: Participants (ages 10-30) were enrolled into three demographically-matched groups: clinical risk for psychosis (CR, n = 32),
