Breaking the vicarious trap: two buffers against close others' environmental influence.

BACKGROUND: Close others' pro-environmental or anti-environmental behaviors can create a vicarious trap: good deeds trigger licensing (reducing one's own effort), and bad deeds induce identification (justifying inaction). However, how this trap can be mitigated remains unclear. METHODS: Across four studies (total N = 523), we found evidence for the vicarious trap in pro‑environmental behavior (PEB) and tested two buffers: situational openness (Study 2) and environmental self‑identity (Studies 3-4). Study 1 compared relationship types; Study 4 combined a brief identity‑enhancement intervention

Racism, Racial Resilience, and African American Youth Development: Person-Centered Analysis as a Tool to Promote Equity and Justice.

Racism constitutes a significant risk to the healthy development of African American youth. Fortunately, however, not all youth who experience racism evidence negative developmental outcomes. In this chapter, we examine person-centered analysis (PCA)-a quantitative technique that investigates how variables combine across individuals-as a useful tool for elucidating racial and ethnic protective processes that mitigate the negative impact of racism. We review recent studies employing PCA in examinations of racial identity, racial socialization, and other race-related experiences, as well as how

Enacting desired change in the present: Explaining prefigurative collective action during Chile's 2019 social explosion.

Many contemporary movements confront existing power structures while experimenting with alternative social relations-a dynamic often discussed as prefigurative politics. Yet social psychology has prioritized explaining why people participate over examining what unfolds through collective action. This study examines how 16 participants made sense of their participation in Chile's 2019 social explosion. Using reflexive thematic analysis of in-depth interviews, informed by the elaborated social identity model, we examine whether aspects of their involvement were understood in prefigurative terms

Who Represents Our Group? The Effects of Prototype Content on Perceived Status Dispersion and Social Undermining.

Group identity may be embodied in more typical or extreme member attributes. The present research suggests that individuals' perceptions of the group identity prototype predict their beliefs about the status hierarchy and, in turn, the prevalence of social undermining behavior. Across four studies using both experimental and field data, we find that perceiving that the group prototype is focused on the ideal rather than the central tendency is associated with greater levels of perceived status dispersion and social undermining, and that perceived status dispersion mediates the relationship bet

Professional identity and moral agency in palliative care: A review.

Background: Nurses and social workers play central roles in palliative care. While moral agency and professional identity have been widely studied, they are rarely examined together, leaving their intersection in palliative care insufficiently understood. Aim: The aim of this integrative review was to identify and analyze the key enablers and barriers influencing the construction of professional identity and the enactment of moral agency among nurses and social workers in the context of palliative care. Methods: The synthesis followed Whittemore and Knafl's integrative review methodology. 12 da

Beyond prejudice: relational inequality, collective action, and social change revisited.

This response clarifies, qualifies, and develops our critique of the limits of intergroup liking as a means of challenging intergroup inequality. It does not dispute that dominant groups may espouse negative attitudes towards subordinate groups. Nor does it dispute that prejudice reduction can be an effective way of tackling resulting forms of intergroup hostility. What it does dispute is the assumption that getting dominant group members and subordinate group members to like each other more is the best way of improving intergroup relations that are characterized by relatively stable, institut

The effect of experimenter identification on (dis)obedience and its mechanisms.

Recent studies following Milgram's seminal experiment have provided insights into what neural, psychological, and contextual factors influence disobedience to immoral orders. According to the engaged followership model, greater identification with the experimenter leads to greater obedience. However, such results were not always replicated. It remains unclear how identifying with the person giving orders modulates (dis)obedience and related mechanisms. Therefore, the current study focussed on neurocognitive mechanisms and cultural factors related to identification with the experimenter to expl

Social assessment of transsexuals who apply for sex reassignment therapy.

A social worker member of the gender identity team of a Psychiatry Department is responsible for the social assessment of the transsexual who applies for sex reassignment surgery. This paper synthesizes the dynamics and processes in conducting the social assessment for eight male-to-female transsexuals from 1986 to April 1988. Role theory was used as the underlying theoretical framework for the assessment. Social criteria for the eligibility of the surgery are delineated. Three cases demonstrate how the social worker used these criteria for the assessment, the difficulties in the process and w

Strategic communication to strengthen nurses' professional identity and drive cultural change in healthcare organizations: A JBI scoping review protocol.

Strategic communication plays a vital role in healthcare organizations undergoing continuous cultural transformation, yet its impact on reinforcing nurses' professional identity remains underexplored. Nurses' professional identity-how they perceive and enact their roles shaped by professional values and social interactions-is fundamental to job satisfaction, resilience, collaboration, and retention. This scoping review protocol outlines a study designed to systematically map and synthesize existing literature on the interaction between strategic communication, professional identity, and cultur

Contemporary antisemitism: Implications for cognitive behavioral therapy.

Recent political movements have been woven into therapy models that include specific ideas considered discriminatory towards Jews. Conceptualized around decolonial models of psychopathology, these frameworks include untested and unassailable assumptions regarding Zionism and Jewish identity that erode the scientific basis of existing evidence-based treatments. We discuss how this movement, with its additional emphasis on activism, promotes a modern form of antisemitism and identity-based discrimination. We conclude with recommendations for addressing this epistemic discrimination.

Exploring the narrative landscape: The discursive construction of identity for Chinese enterprises in Africa.

This study investigates the construction of corporate identities by Chinese enterprises in Africa, employing the Three-dimensional Model of Fairchough in conjunction with the corporate communication strategies outlined by Kim and Rader. Through an extensive analysis of official website content from 200 Chinese companies, this study explores how these corporations utilize communication strategies to project their identities. The findings reveal a strategic use of discourse to align corporate practices with local cultures and business norms, facilitating their expansion and acceptance in African

Family caregivers and the ethical relevance of moral identity.

Many people want to spend the last stages of their lives at home, in familiar surroundings, and possibly with people they know. However, this increasing desire on the part of older, ill, or even dying people also makes support from other people unavoidable, which in many cases involves family members, loved ones, or even friends. These family caregivers care for the person concerned, even though they lack the professional skills of nursing staff, for example, and have usually not been prepared for this task. This article focuses on the ethical significance of the moral identity of family careg

[Researching identity development and statuses with the Dimensions of Identity Development Scale: the Japanese version].

The Dimensions of Identity Development Scale (DIDS) provides a new method of researching identity development based on the dual-process model pertaining to lifespan development. This study developed and evaluated the Japanese version of this scale (DIDS-J). Two surveys of undergraduate and high school students showed that the DIDS-J had good reliability and validity and that it consisted of 25 items with five factors: commitment making, identity with commitment, exploration in breadth, exploration in depth, and ruminative exploration. Through cluster analysis of the DIDS-J, five identity statu

'They're big and I is small': The precarious identity reconstruction process of a low-status occupational group.

This paper studies how certified nursing assistants (CNAs), as members of a low-status occupational group, engage in identity reconstruction as they attempt to alter their marginalized position within long-term care organizations. Micro-level process data consist of 160 h of participant observations of a professional development programme for CNAs and 130 in-depth interviews with programme participants and their colleagues in care organizations. The findings show that the identity reconstruction process involved four micro-processes: 1) recognizing the dominance of marginalized identity, 2) se

Deaf Identity, Social Relationships, and Social Support: Toward a Microsociological Perspective.

This study is the first to analyze data from a national survey to investigate the significance for deaf identity of the different forms of social and technological support that deaf people rely upon. Data were derived from a survey among 839 deaf people and were analyzed with regard to social identification as deaf, hearing, bicultural, and marginal. Findings showed connections between technology and identity, including the use of a range of technology to support being culturally deaf. Findings also showed that the deaf and hearing groups had strong homophilous social networks, while the bicul

Me against we: in-group transgression, collective shame, and in-group-directed hostility.

People can experience great distress when a group to which they belong (in-group) is perceived to have committed an immoral act. We hypothesised that people would direct hostility toward a transgressing in-group whose actions threaten their self-image and evoke collective shame. Consistent with this theorising, three studies found that reminders of in-group transgression provoked several expressions of in-group-directed hostility, including in-group-directed hostile emotion (Studies 1 and 2), in-group-directed derogation (Study 2), and in-group-directed punishment (Study 3). Across studies, co

Debating trans inclusion in the feminist movement: a trans-positive analysis.

The debate over whether or not to allow, accept, and embrace transpeople as a segment of the feminist movement has been a tumultuous one that remains unresolved. Prominent authors have argued both sides of the dispute. This article analyzes the anti-inclusion feminist viewpoint and offers a trans-positive perspective for moving toward a potential resolution of the debate.

[Motives and interpersonal functions of aggression].

In this review, the author theoretically and empirically examined motives and interpersonal functions of aggression. A factor-analysis of Averill's questionnaire items on anger revealed that motives involved in aggressive responses were clustered into two groups: the hostile and the instrumental. It was also clarified that an individual is likely to engage in aggression particularly when some hostile motives are evoked. Concerning the interpersonal functions, the author proposed that aggression might serve four principal goals. (1) Aggression can be generated as an avoidance response to an ave

The workplace as a community: promoting employee satisfaction.

Because people's primary commitments lie elsewhere, the workplace will never be a true community. The workplace will be better, however, if employees show concern and respect for coworkers and if employers celebrate traditions, recognize achievement, and encourage creative thinking. Such workplace enhancement should encourage employees' participation in a shared enterprise but not substitute for workers' outside ties. To offset excessive competition, which can lead to suspicion and hostility, employers can (1) provide communication outlets, (2) faster loyalty to the job by providing attractive
