According to the social defeat (SD) hypothesis, published in 2005, long-term exposure to the experience of SD may lead to sensitization of the mesolimbic dopamine (DA) system and thereby increase the risk for schizophrenia. The hypothesis posits that SD (ie, the negative experience of being excluded from the majority group) is the common denominator of 5 major schizophrenia risk factors: urban upbringing, migration, childhood trauma, low intelligence, and drug abuse. The purpose of this update of the literature since 2005 is to answer 2 questions: (1) What is the evidence that SD explains the

Severe alcohol use disorder (AUD) in the context of housing instability remains one of the most complex health and social issues. Homelessness is related to increased vulnerability to stigma, marginalization and harmful ways of alcohol consumption, including non-beverage alcohol use (NBA). As a result, severe intoxication, alcohol poisoning, injury and death are common occurrences. Although harm minimization strategies have been readily proposed and examined in the context of drug use, applying the same principles to severe AUD remains controversial within the research and treatment community.

BACKGROUND: Fragmented care models for sleep medicine in Canada disadvantage individuals with socioeconomic barriers. This can lead to delays in diagnoses, treatment, and increased health care utilization. This study aimed to explore whether subjects who receive polysomnography (PSG) during hospitalization represent a marginalized population.
METHODS: We identified subjects who underwent PSG during hospitalization (inpatient PSG) at an academic hospital in Canada, from January 1, 2019, to December 31, 2021. Time, age- and sex-matched control groups were derived in a 2:1 allocation ratio inclu

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is highly prevalent in transgender (trans) populations in the United States; however, details about its manifestations and correlates have not been well captured. Using data from the 2015 U.S. Transgender Survey, we analyzed weighted data from 23,999 adult transgender participants to estimate the prevalence and explore correlates of five IPV subtypes: psychological IPV, physical IPV, trans-related IPV, stalking, and forced sex committed by an intimate partner. Regression models examined race/ethnicity, gender identity, past-year incarceration, past-year sex work

The political dimensions of cognitive-behavioral practice are considered in the context of a range of social justice issues, including the marginalization of minorities following colonization, and the role that research and practice play in supporting conditions that maintain trauma and injustice with disempowered peoples. It is argued that critical issues for CBT practitioners who engage with Indigenous peoples in Australasia include appreciating the narrow lens of legitimization, understanding their limited capacity to account for the impacts of systemic oppression, and accommodating points

The prevalence of heart failure (HF) continues to rise and disproportionately affects disadvantaged populations. This has created an urgent need to concurrently tackle HF prevention and therapeutics, and to look beyond traditional HF risk factors. Several aspects of the social context and environment such as race/ethnicity, social isolation/loneliness, marginalization/segregation, socioeconomic position, air pollution, noise pollution, extreme temperatures, food environment, geographical location and neighborhood socioeconomic status have been recognized as modifiers of HF risk. These factors

BACKGROUND: Disrespectful and abusive treatment during childbirth is a violation of women's right to dignified, respectful healthcare throughout pregnancy and childbirth. Although reports point out that marginalized groups in society such as single mothers are particularly vulnerable to abusive and disrespectful care, there is a lack of in-depth research exploring single mothers' encounters at the maternal healthcare facilities, especially in Tunisia. In Tunisia, single mothers are particularly vulnerable due to their social stigmatization and socio-economic marginalization. This study examine

BACKGROUND: Eritrean migrants in Israel, the majority of whom are seeking asylum, have limited access to institutional support. While the temporary group protection granted to Eritreans by Israel ensures that they are not deported, it does not confer permanent legal status, nor does it allow access to the formal work sector. This study qualitatively explores how political and economic marginalization increases the risk of sexual and other forms of violence as well as the exploitation of Eritrean women asylum seekers living in Israel.

Dissemination and implementation (D&I) science is ascendant within public health in the United States, but D&I scientists have long voiced concern at their field's capacity to fulfill two essential and intertwined public health responsibilities: analyzing and intervening in macrosocial determinants and achieving health equity. To help break this impasse, we explore D&I's theoretical roots by critically reviewing three historical eras, eras that D&I's origin story has identified as foundational to D&I's development: 1890-1903: Tarde's Laws of Imitation. 1920-1960: Rural Sociology. 1960-1980: Kn

The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of family and community on the social and sexual lives of a group of Latino gay men living in a metropolitan area. A secondary analysis of four focus groups with 28 Latino gay men was conducted. Families had a difficult time acknowledging and supporting participants' homosexuality. Participants experienced racism, discrimination, and physical and verbal abuse as a result of their ethnicity and homosexuality. These negative effects contributed to their marginalization and made them vulnerable to depression and suicide. Health care professional

English-language reporting on the continuing difficulties in accessing Evusheld reflects the marginalization of immunocompromised people in discussions about the public policy response to Covid-19. Moreover, the lack of available data on global Evusheld access, particularly in low-income countries, has emerged as a key form of nonknowledge that must be redressed within public health research. Through examining how knowledge about domestic and global barriers to Evusheld access circulates, and does not circulate, within The New York Times, this paper identifies a case study of the social produc

The Agotes are among the most enigmatic minority social groups in the Iberian Peninsula, historically subjected to long-standing social marginalization by their non-Agote neighbors. Nowadays, all Agotes live in the small town of Bozate (Baztan valley, Navarra, Spain), but their origins remain disputed, with different hypotheses. In this study, we analyze genome-wide genotype data from 125 newly sampled individuals from Bozate, the Baztan valley, and Navarra. Our findings indicate that the Agotes have a local genetic origin and exhibit high levels of homozygosity. Their isolation is likely due

Structural determinants of health frameworks must express antiracism to be effective, but racial and ethnic inequities are widely documented, even in harm reduction programs that focus on person-centered interventions. Harm reduction strategies should express social justice and health equity, resist stigma and discrimination, and mitigate marginalization experiences among people who use drugs (PWUD). To do so, government and organizational policies that promote harm reduction must acknowledge historical and ongoing patterns of racializing drug use. This article gives examples of such racializa

Social exclusion and legal marginalization are important determinants of health outcomes for people who use illicit drugs, sex workers, and persons who face criminal penalties because of homosexuality or transgenderism. Incarceration may add to the health risks associated with police repression and discrimination for these persons. Access to legal services may be essential to positive health outcomes in these populations. Through concrete examples, this paper explores types of legal problems and legal services linked to health outcomes for drug users, sex workers, and sexual minorities and mak

Urban frontline services have recorded increases in psychostimulant-related presentations. A convenience sample of 183 street-based psychostimulant injectors recruited in April 2006 was administered the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10) to assess psychological distress. Homelessness, unemployment, and recent public injection, along with gender (female) and financial and relationship problems, best predicted clinically significant K10 scores. Drug use measures were not significantly associated with distress once indicators of social marginalization were included. The risk environment o

This article explores the complex role of medical social workers (MSWs) in addressing structural determinants of health among unidentified and homeless patients within India's public health system. Drawing on grounded field experiences, it reveals how MSWs act as crucial intermediaries navigating institutional apathy, legal ambiguity, and human rights obligations to uphold dignity and ensure care. The study highlights how caste, poverty, mental health stigma, and systemic neglect intersect to deepen marginalization. It further examines the strategies employed by MSWs to mitigate these inequiti

Northern Ontario is the largest and least populated region of the Canadian province of Ontario. Like other rural, remote, and northern regions, Northern Ontario has been disproportionately impacted by the opioid crisis, with an opioid-related mortality rate more than twice that of the province as a whole. Social exclusion is a predictor of drug use, and the urban core-hinterland periphery socioeconomic relationship that undergirds Northern Ontario's economy results in social degradation and economic marginalization. Along with deindustrialization and increased employment precarity, lack of acc

The maternal mortality situation is analyzed in México as an indicator that reflects the social development level of the country and was one of the millennial development objectives. The effect of a maternal death in the related social group has multiplier effects, since it involves family dislocation, economic impact and disruption of the orphans' normal social development. Two perspectives that causes of maternal mortality were analyzed, on one hand, their relationship with social determinants and on the other, factors directly related to the health system. Evidence shows that comparing popu

BACKGROUND: HCV elimination requires a thorough understanding of the care cascade. A direct-acting antiviral (DAA)-era description of the care cascade has not been undertaken in Ontario, Canada's most populous jurisdiction. Our primary objective was to describe the current population-level care cascade in the general Ontario population and among key risk groups ─ baby boomers, immigrants, and individuals experiencing residential instability. The secondary objective was to identify predictors of engagement.
METHODS: We conducted a population-based cohort study of Ontario residents undergoing H

There is growing evidence to suggest that multimorbidity is not only a consequence of aging but also other environmental risk factors such as socio-economic status and social marginalization. In this study, the prevalence of multimorbidity was examined (defined as the simultaneous occurrence of two or more chronic morbidities) by age, gender and the Ontario Marginalization index (material deprivation, residential instability, dependency and ethnic concentration). With a cross-sectional design, 2015 data on 18 morbidities from 12,516,587 residents of the province of Ontario, Canada, were analys
