A cross-sectional analysis of the association between perceived network social control and telomere length.

OBJECTIVE: Social control in the health domain refers to attempts by social network members to get an individual to modify their health behaviors. According to the dual effects model of social control, having one's health behavior controlled by others should be related to healthier behavioral change, but might arouse psychological distress as one may resent being controlled. Despite potential healthy behavior change, the stress of social control may thus be detrimental as interpersonal stress has been related to negative health outcomes. In the present study, the association between perceived

Network Analysis of the Social Environment Relative to Preference for and Tolerance of Exercise Intensity in CrossFit Gyms.

Known for its ability to improve fitness and health, high-intensity functional training (HIFT) focuses on functional movements completed at high intensities, often yielding outcomes superior to repetitive aerobic workouts. Preference for and tolerance of high-intensity exercise are associated with enjoyment of and adherence to HIFT. Similarly, the social environment present within CrossFit, a popular group-based HIFT modality, is important to the enjoyment of and adherence to HIFT. This study aimed to test whether preference and tolerance were related to social connections within CrossFit netw

Caregiver social networks and discontinued support during COVID-19: a multilevel dyadic analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Family caregivers provide essential support to older adults, but their extended caregiving networks can be strained during crises. This study examines which characteristics of caregivers' personal networks were associated with discontinued support during the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic, a period of widespread social disruption. METHODS: We analyzed data from the Care Network Connections over Time study, a longitudinal, nationally representative study of U.S. caregivers. Respondents (N = 2,116) reported on support before and during COVID-19. Multilevel logistic regression

Risks, prices, and positions: A social network analysis of illegal drug trafficking in the world-economy.

BACKGROUND: Illegal drug prices are extremely high, compared to similar goods. There is, however, considerable variation in value depending on place, market level and type of drugs. A prominent framework for the study of illegal drugs is the "risks and prices" model (Reuter & Kleiman, 1986). Enforcement is seen as a "tax" added to the regular price. In this paper, it is argued that such economic models are not sufficient to explain price variations at country-level. Drug markets are analysed as global trade networks in which a country's position has an impact on various features, including ill

Social networks reshape the impact of elder abuse on social well-being: a national longitudinal analysis of urban-rural disparities in China.

This study aimed to examine the association between elder abuse, changes in older adults' social networks, and changes in social well-being among rural and urban community-dwellers in mainland China. A total of 7,125 participants (aged ≥60 years) were selected. This study conducted regression analyses to assess how exposure to elder abuse in 2018 affected subsequent changes in social networks and social well-being among older adults by 2020. We found that the victims who reported the abuse had better social well-being after two years compared to those who did not report. Among rural victims, a

Personal Social Network Analysis in Cerebellar Ataxia: Exploring Correlations with Quality of Life and Functional Outcomes.

Patients with cerebellar ataxia experience fatigue, impaired executive function, and psychosocial deficits. Personal social networks affect physical and mental well-being but there are no data on their effect on quality of life (QOL) and function in ataxia. We examined social network metrics in patients with cerebellar ataxia to test the hypothesis that supportive relationships enhance quality of life and physical function. We used a cross-sectional, survey-interview design with the Personal Network Survey for Clinical Research, World Health Organization QOL-BREF (WHOQOL), Functional Staging S

Network analysis of social support and anxiety symptoms among college students during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Recent research suggests that focusing on specific symptoms, rather than general levels of impairment, may offer a more nuanced understanding of psychopathology. Given the unique social and psychological challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, this study aims to explore the relationships between the three dimensions of perceived social support family support, friend support, and other support-and individual anxiety symptoms among college students. The pandemic context provides an opportunity to examine how different forms of social support may influence specific anxiety symptoms

Network analysis of social anxiety and problematic mobile phone use in Chinese adolescents: A longitudinal study.

Social anxiety is a common comorbid factor of problematic mobile phone use, but the relationship between them from the inside structure has been underexplored. This two-wave longitudinal study aims to identify the central symptoms of problematic mobile phone use and social anxiety, respectively, as well as the bridge symptoms between the two disorders. Furthermore, this study examined the time and gender differences. A total of 3,294 Chinese adolescents were recruited during two waves (T1: January 2023; T2: August 2023), and completed the questionnaires of social anxiety and problematic mobile

Disrupted brain gray matter connectome in social anxiety disorder: a novel individualized structural covariance network analysis.

Phenotyping approaches grounded in structural network science can offer insights into the neurobiological substrates of psychiatric diseases, but this remains to be clarified at the individual level in social anxiety disorder (SAD). Using a recently developed approach combining probability density estimation and Kullback-Leibler divergence, we constructed single-subject structural covariance networks (SCNs) based on multivariate morphometry (cortical thickness, surface area, curvature, and volume) and quantified their global/nodal network properties using graph-theoretical analysis. We compare

Social network analysis of food sharing among households in opisthorchiasis endemic villages of Lawa Lake, Thailand.

Consumption of raw fish is a well-documented risk factor for Opisthorchis viverrini infection. Sharing of food, especially raw fish recipes may influence the spread of disease through a community. Using social network analysis of an ego network, we investigated food sharing among households in an Opisthorchis-endemic area. Network centrality properties were used to explain the differences in O. viverrini transmission and control between villages with a low and high prevalence of infection. Information on demography and O. viverrini infection in 2008 from villagers in the Lawa Lake area was ext

Can Social Network Analysis Help Address the High Rates of Bacterial Sexually Transmitted Infections in Saskatchewan?

BACKGROUND: Saskatchewan has one of the highest rates of gonorrhea among the Canadian provinces-more than double the national rate. In light of these high rates, and the growing threat of untreatable infections, improved understanding of gonorrhea transmission dynamics in the province and evaluation of the current system and tools for disease control are important. METHODS: We extracted data from a cross-sectional sample of laboratory-confirmed gonorrhea cases between 2003 and 2012 from the notifiable disease files of the Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region. The database was stratified by calenda

Efficacy of digital interventions in social anxiety disorder: a systematic review and Bayesian network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterized by a significant and persistent fear of social or performance situations. The prevalence of SAD has gradually increased recently, and the unique advantages of digital interventions (DIs) have gained traction in psychiatric disorders. However, there is currently no comprehensive review comparing the effectiveness of diverse DIs for SAD. METHODS: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating DIs for patients with SAD were identified by searching the PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Embase databases from January 1, 1995, to March 31, 2025.

A longitudinal network analysis of parental responses to adolescents' negative emotions and adolescent social media doomscrolling.

Parental emotion socialization has been closely linked to various adolescent risk behaviors on social media; however, the interactive mechanisms between parental responses to adolescents' negative emotions (PR) and social media doomscrolling (SD) remain unclear. A network analysis method considering time-varying effects was used to describe the structural characteristics and dynamic interactions between PR and SD. A total of 2873 adolescents participated at both measurement occasions. Cross-sectional network analysis indicated that emotion-focused response was the most central node in the PR n

Optimizing peer-led health interventions: A social network analysis approach for identifying influential fishermen in Malawi.

Social network interventions (SNIs) can leverage influential individuals within personal networks to amplify health behavior adoption and intervention diffusion. While SNIs are potentially effective in enhancing uptake of HIV prevention and other interventions, identifying optimal peer leaders remains challenging. This study assessed how social network-based approaches can improve peer leader identification compared to non-structural approaches (i.e., those that do not use network data for promoter selection). Between 8th October 2024 and 31st March 2025, we mapped the social connections among

Structural embeddedness of social adversity within internalising psychopathology in older adults: A transdiagnostic symptom network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Social adversity is a determinant of mental health in later life, yet the network connectivity patterns through which it becomes embedded within internalising psychopathology remain insufficiently understood. This study aimed to examine the transdiagnostic symptom network linking social adversity, psychological resources, and internalising psychopathology in older adults. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study among older adults in Hunan Province, China. Guided by the Stress Buffering Model, validated self-report measures assessed perceived ageism as social adversity, lonel

Natural language processing reveals network structure of pain communication in social media using discrete mathematical analysis.

Pain-related discussions on social media provide valuable insights into how people naturally express and communicate their pain experiences. However, the network structure of these discussions remains poorly understood. This study analyzed 57,000 Reddit comments from the GoEmotions dataset (2005-2019) using natural language processing and network analysis techniques grounded in discrete mathematical principles. The constructed network, comprising 5,630 nodes and 86,972 edges, revealed complex patterns of pain-related language use. The network exhibited a sparse overall density (0.0055) but a h

Willingness to receive medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD): A longitudinal analysis of social network support.

BACKGROUND: Medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD, i.e., buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone) save lives, but many individuals are unwilling to receive MOUD treatment. Few longitudinal studies have examined whether social network support for MOUD is related to willingness to receive MOUD. METHODS: Egocentric network data were collected from 393 adults with OUD who were incarcerated in 14 Kentucky prisons; follow-up data were collected about six months post-release. For each named alter, participants (egos) reported on perceived alters' support for buprenorphine, methadone, and naltrexone
