Personal social networks of people with Down syndrome.

Studies in the neurotypical population have demonstrated that personal social networks can mitigate cognitive decline and the development of Alzheimer disease. To assess whether these benefits can also be extended to people with Down syndrome (DS), we studied whether and how personal networks can be measured in this population. We adapted a personal networks instrument previously created, validated, and implemented for the neurotypical population. We created two versions of the survey: one for participants with DS, ages 25 and older, and another for their study partners, who spent a minimum of

Paternal Incarceration and Adolescent Social Network Disadvantage.

Previous research has suggested that adolescent peers influence behavior and provide social support during a critical developmental period, but few studies have addressed the antecedents of adolescent social networks. Research on the collateral consequences of incarceration has explored the implications of parental incarceration for children's behavioral problems, academic achievement, health, and housing stability, but not their social networks. Using network data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, I find that adolescents with recently incarcerated fathers are in socia

Egocentric social network analysis of pathological gambling.

AIMS: To apply social network analysis (SNA) to investigate whether frequency and severity of gambling problems were associated with different network characteristics among friends, family and co-workers is an innovative way to look at relationships among individuals; the current study was the first, to our knowledge, to apply SNA to gambling behaviors. DESIGN: Egocentric social network analysis was used to characterize formally the relationships between social network characteristics and gambling pathology. SETTING: Laboratory-based questionnaire and interview administration. PARTICIPANTS:

"Thanks for sharing that": ruminators and their social support networks.

Receiving positive social support after a trauma generally is related to better adjustment to the trauma. The personality of trauma survivors may affect the extent to which they seek social support, their perceived receipt of social support, and the extent to which they benefit from social support. The authors hypothesized that people with a ruminative coping style, who tended to focus excessively on their own emotional reactions to a trauma, compared to those without a ruminative coping style, would seek more social support, and would benefit more from social support, but would report receivi

"I Don't Know What Fun Is": Examining the Intersection of Social Capital, Social Networks, and Social Recovery.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper is to understand how people with problematic drug use access positive social capital. Social capital is defined as relations that provide valuable resources to individuals through participation in social networks. People with low socioeconomic status remain at a disadvantage for acquiring positive social capital, a component of recovery capital. The concept of social recovery emphasises the relational processes of recovery. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: In-depth life history data were collected from 29 individuals who used heroin, cocaine, crack, or methamphe

Social Isolation or Autistic Homophily: An Exploration of the Social Networks of Autistic College Students.

Our understanding of autistic socialization using social network analysis has focused on autistic children and understanding support systems. The purpose of this study is to examine autistic friendship networks in adulthood without focusing on support systems. We broadly recruited autistic and nonautistic college students (n = 592 students). Students provided ego-network information, including demographics, satisfaction with their social relationships, and perceptions of their friends (e.g. perceived neurotype and demographics). Autistic college students reported similar network structure metr

Social Mycology: Using Social Media Networks in the Management of Aspergillosis and Other Mycoses.

Online social media networks are an integral part of modern life. Microblogging sites such as Twitter have hundreds of millions of active users globally and have been enthusiastically adopted by many in the medical profession. For advancing a relatively neglected field such as fungal infection, this can be especially advantageous. Education, research networking, case discussions and public and patient engagement can all be greatly enhanced through the use of social media networks. This review highlights the ways in which this can work successfully in the case of aspergillosis and fungal infect

The influence of social networks and social support on violence by persons with serious mental illness.

OBJECTIVE: The authors examined the relationship between violent acts and threats by persons with serious mental illness, the size and composition of their social networks, and characteristics of the social support they received. METHODS: A group of 169 respondents with serious mental illness and 59 of their significant others were interviewed using structured and semi-structured protocols to elicit data on demographic characteristics, clinical characteristics, characteristics of respondents' social networks and of the social support they received, and perceptions of threat within the social

Friendship Social Support Networks of African Americans.

Friends are crucial for companionship, sharing personal thoughts and feelings, and are positively associated with psychological well-being and mental health. This is one of the first studies to provide an in-depth investigation of social support networks of African American friendship. Using a nationally representative sample of African American adults drawn from the National Survey of American Life, this study investigated sociodemographic correlates, as well as expanded information on marital status and life circumstances of friendships. Additionally, we examined the interrelationships among

Cerebellar vermis joins the brain's social network.

The cerebellum is more than just motor control: over the past 30 years, the notion that the “little brain” participates in cognitive functions and emotional response has grown to encompass social-related behaviors. Chao et al. bring to light the role of the cerebellar vermis in orchestrating a specific component of social memory in mice.

Social networks of unaccompanied women experiencing homelessness.

This study explored strengths, barriers, and role of social networks among unaccompanied women experiencing homelessness. Twenty women from two local shelters participated in semistructured, face-to-face interviews. A constant comparative analysis revealed 4 themes: support as a coping mechanism, loss of support as a path to homelessness, support as a drain, and support as a way to give. Almost universally, women experienced considerable barriers to housing, including physical health, mental health, substance abuse, or domestic violence. Despite precarious circumstances, women showed optimism,

Mumps transmission in social networks: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Mumps emerged among highly vaccinated populations in the Netherlands. This offered a unique opportunity to study mumps virus transmission. In particular the extent to which asymptomatic infections in vaccinated people contribute to ongoing mumps virus transmission is uncertain. Insight into this could help project the future burden of mumps in vaccinated populations. We therefore studied the relative infectiousness of symptomatic and asymptomatic cases. METHODS: In a cohort study we followed contacts of notified mumps cases (ring 1) and contacts' contacts (ring 2) for 40 days to a

Mental Health and Social Networks After Disaster.

OBJECTIVE: Although disasters are a major cause of mental health problems and typically affect large numbers of people and communities, little is known about how social structures affect mental health after a disaster. The authors assessed the extent to which mental health outcomes after disaster are associated with social network structures. METHOD: In a community-based cohort study of survivors of a major bushfire disaster, participants (N=558) were assessed for probable posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and probable depression. Social networks were assessed by asking participants to nom

Raccoon social networks and the potential for disease transmission.

Raccoons are an important vector of rabies and other pathogens. The degree to which these pathogens can spread through a raccoon population should be closely linked to association rates between individual raccoons. Most studies of raccoon sociality have found patterns consistent with low levels of social connectivity within populations, thus the likelihood of direct pathogen transmission between raccoons is theoretically low. We used proximity detecting collars and social network metrics to calculate the degree of social connectivity in an urban raccoon population for purposes of estimating po

Social networks of homeless youth in emerging adulthood.

Little is known about the social networks of homeless youth in emerging adulthood despite the importance of this information for interventions to reduce health risks. This study examined the composition of social networks, and the risks and supports present within them, in a random sample of 349 homeless youth (33.4% female, 23.9% African American, 17.7% Hispanic) between the ages of 18 and 24. Social network members who were met on the street were among the most likely to be perceived as engaging in risky sex, as well as to engage in substance use with the youth. Youth were more likely to cou

[Social network and health promotion of homeless population].

One of the outcomes of globalization has been a constant increase of the number of people living in the streets of metropolis such as São Paulo: those are not only homeless, but also people who live in the streets and earn their living from it. We have surveyed the institutions working with adult homeless population in the central region of Sao Paulo. Their goals and strategies were described, as well as how they associate with each other. Our main hypothesis is that our reality is still formed by isolated actions, based on mere assistance policies that help to maintain the problem of homeless

Sexual networks: the integration of social and genetic data.

New methods for studying sexual networks are presented, drawing upon routine procedures followed in genitourinary medicine clinics in the UK for tracing partners and identifying strains of infection. The routine social procedures were developed to incorporate a structured interview. The routine microbiological diagnosis of gonorrhoea was augmented by phenotyping and the development of new genetic techniques for the fine discrimination of gonococcal strains (opa-typing). Selected results from a study in Sheffield, UK show that each method has limitations, when conducted separately, but these ar

The social network of people who attempt suicide.

Social characteristics and self-rating of social support by means of the Interview Schedule for Social Interaction were investigated in 75 inpatients after a suicide attempt. We found that very few suicide attempters (13%) had a well functioning relationship, and two-thirds had problems in their occupational situation. Divorced patients had unsatisfactory social interaction compared with those who were married or cohabiting and with those who were single or widowed. Employees and students more often had deep emotional relations than those who were unemployed or in vocational rehabilitation. Th
