Psychometric evaluation of the Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents and the Social Phobia and Anxiety Inventory for Children: construct validity and normative data.

This study evaluated the psychometric properties of the Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents (SAS-A) and Social Phobia and Anxiety Inventory for Children (SPAI-C) in a sample of 1147 adolescents aged 13-17 years. The fit indices of confirmatory factor analyses were comparable to those obtained in prior studies and supported the hypothesized models of the SAS-A and SPAI-C. The internal consistency was good and 12-month test-retest reliability modest for both measures. A significant, positive correlation was found between the SAS-A and SPAI-C, showing that these measures assess related, but rela

Understanding female smoking in urban China: motivations, stigma and shifting social norms-a qualitative focus group study.

BACKGROUND: Although female smoking prevalence in China remains low, emerging evidence suggests that social acceptance may be increasing, with tobacco marketing increasingly targeting women. This study explored women's smoking behaviours, motivations and societal perceptions toward this in urban China. METHODS: Between May and October 2019, 28 semistructured focus groups were conducted in Beijing, Changsha and Shenzhen with 288 participants: 12 groups of female smokers, 6 of female former smokers, 6 of female never-smokers and 4 of men. Participants were recruited both online and offline, and

The weight of society: a qualitative study on how social norms shape body size and weight ideals.

BACKGROUND: Weight bias and stigma have transformed body weight from a purely biological attribute into a complex social phenomenon. Social and health scientists continue to critically examine how weight stigmatising discourses and biased perceptions shape attitudes, beliefs and everyday experiences. Studies show that socially mediated subjectivities profoundly affect women's health-related behaviours and decision-making. This study seeks to explore, from the standpoint of patients attending a gynaecological clinic, how weight bias and stigma influence women's perceptions of their own weight a

Semantic knowledge of social norms in frontotemporal dementia patients with either predominant frontal or temporal lobe atrophy.

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about the relative contribution of frontal and anterior temporal lobes in semantic knowledge of social norms in frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Therefore, this study examined performance of FTD patients with either frontal (F-FTD, left temporal (LT-FTD) or bitemporal lobe atrophy (BT-FTD) on the Social Norms Questionnaire (SNQ) and explored what accounts for the variance in the SNQ-break norm subscale (i.e., endorsement of inappropriate behaviors). METHODS: Using data from the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center (NACC), groups were matched for age and education

Beyond social cues: the normative influence of social referents on COVID-19 vaccine compliance among Latino day laborers.

Pandemic uncertainty led Latino day laborers (jornaleros) to rely on their close networks for direction. Social-norms research distinguishes descriptive norms (what trusted others do), injunctive norms (what they say one should do), and normative beliefs (how much they care about compliance); yet the relative weight of family, friends, coworkers, and neighbors in shaping vaccine choices remains unknown. To compare the influence of descriptive and injunctive norms from each referent group on COVID-19 vaccination among Latino day laborers in Houston, Texas. Two cross-sectional surveys (Phase 1 N

Social norms and the decline in US cigarette smoking: evidence from 30 years of US representative surveys.

INTRODUCTION: Changing social norms on cigarette smoking are proposed as a primary strategy to reduce smoking behaviour. METHODS: Using core questions in 30 years of tobacco use supplements (TUS) to the Current Population Survey (CPS), we develop a state-specific, injunctive social norm scale of Willingness to Restrict Smoking (WTRS) and test its association with smoking behaviours. Respondents (n=1 462 050) to US national and state representative TUS-CPS conducted at nine regular intervals from 1992 to 2022. RESULTS: Respondents were queried on their WTRS in 10 different settings, which var

The good things I should (not) have done: social norms modulate regret following prosocial action and inaction.

Research on action-inaction regret has mostly examined morally-neutral, instrumental choices; far less is known about regret in prosocial contexts where help-offering is morally valued yet can be intrusive. We hypothesised that failing to meet recipients' expectations by offering unwanted help (action) would elicit more regret than not offering wanted help (inaction), particularly under weak prosocial norms. We manipulated (Study 1) or measured (Study 2) prosocial norms using workplace vignettes (N = 425). When norms discouraged helping, participants anticipated more regret following action, c

Digital stress and friendship conflict in adolescence: the role of perceived norms and features of social media.

INTRODUCTION: Digital stress, resulting from expectations of online availability, can increase the risk of conflicts with friends. However, friendship conflict remains an underexplored indicator, particularly in association with stressful online experiences. This study aims to examine the association between digital stress and conflict levels overtime, considering the role of social media expectations. METHOD: 1185 adolescents (59.3% f, Mage = 15.97 years, SD = 1.43) completed self-report measures at two timepoints, six months apart. A Structural Equation Model was employed to examine the lon

All My Friends Are Doing It: Perceived Social Norms Predict Heavier Sports Betting Behavior Among Young Adults.

Sports betting is the fastest growing gambling behavior in the United States, particularly among young adults. Despite burgeoning evidence of the public health concerns associated with sports betting, antecedents of this addictive behavior are largely understudied. Informed by seminal psychological theories of conformity and existing norms-based prevention paradigms for high-risk behavior, the current study aimed to quantitatively examine perceived social norms as a potential explanatory factor for sports betting behavior. The sample was comprised of 221 young adults from 36 different U.S. sta

Inclusive classroom norms and children's expectations of inclusion of peers with learning difficulties in their social world.

We examined whether inclusive classroom norms predicted children's reasoning and expectations about the inclusion of peers with learning difficulties from different perspectives (i.e., self, friends, and unfamiliar story protagonist). Swiss elementary school children (N = 1019; 51% girls; Mage = 10.20 years; Grades 3-6) shared their perceptions of inclusive classroom norms and answered questions regarding the inclusion of a character with learning difficulties in an academic scenario. Multilevel analyses revealed that children expected less inclusion from their friends (estimated OR = 0.14, p

Risk perception, changing social context, and norms prevent transition to regular injection among people who smoke heroin.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of research examining what prevents people who smoke heroin from transitioning to regular injection. This qualitative study aims to improve understanding of environmental influences preventing people who smoke heroin from transitioning to regular injection. METHODS: In-depth, semi-structured interviews (n = 15) were conducted with people who currently smoked heroin but never injected (n = 10) and those who injected on a few occasions but did not transition to regular injection (n = 5) in Northern Ireland. Multiple recruitment strategies were utilized to generate a

Individual attitudes and perceived social norms: Reports on HIV/AIDS-related stigma among service providers in China.

This study examined HIV/AIDS-related stigma among Chinese service providers by comparing their personal attitudes toward people living with HIV/AIDS with their perception of social norms related to people living with HIV/AIDS. We randomly selected three provincial hospitals, four city/prefecture hospitals, 10 county hospitals,18 township health clinics, and 54 village clinics from Yunnan, China. Doctors and nurses were randomly sampled proportionally to the doctor–nurse ratio of each hospital or clinic. Lab technicians were over-sampled in order to include an adequate representation in the ana

A Social Norms-Based Intervention Improves Dietary Diversity among Women in Rural India: The Reduction in Anemia through Normative Innovations (RANI) Project.

Diet diversity has an important role in the prevention and treatment of anemia. Based on formative research in the community and the theory of normative social behavior, we designed an intervention to improve diet diversity among women of reproductive age. Our study, the Reduction in Anemia through Normative Innovations (RANI) Project, investigated the effect of a social norms-based intervention on diet diversity among women of reproductive age. We randomized villages in Odisha, India, into treatment or control arms, with a minimum of one village buffer between them. We assessed exposure to th

How Do Social and Behavioral Change Interventions Respond to Social Norms to Improve Women's Diets in Low- and Middle-Income Countries? A Scoping Review.

Healthy dietary practices are highly influenced by social norms, the widely-held expectations about the behaviors that are appropriate or typical within a given group. However, many nutrition programs designed to reduce women's undernutrition in low- and middle-income countries do not address the influence of social and gender norms in their interventions, and therefore, there is limited information about how norms-responsive interventions have been designed and implemented. The objective of this scoping review was to identify and describe social and behavioral change interventions designed to

Resting-state EEG connectome topology and social norm processing in healthy young adults.

Resting-state network topology may provide a powerful framework for understanding how large-scale brain organisation supports cognitive functions. However, the topological correlates of social cognition remain poorly characterised. This study examined whether individual differences in social cognition are associated with the global topology of the resting-state functional connectome derived from high-density EEG across canonical frequency bands. Twenty-eight healthy young adults underwent a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment, including measures of global cognition, theory of mind, emp

The influence of social adjustment on normative and risky health behaviors in emerging adults with spina bifida.

OBJECTIVE: To understand the rates of normative and risky health behaviors and the influence of prior and current social adjustment on health risk behaviors in emerging adults with spina bifida (SB). METHOD: These data are part of a larger longitudinal study of youth with SB; at ages 18-19, 50 emerging adults with SB and 60 typically developing (TD) youth participated. Social adjustment was measured at ages 12/13, 14/15, 16/17, and 18/19. Substance use and sexual activity were self-reported by emerging adults. RESULTS: The SB group reported similar frequencies (i.e., number of days in the pr

Is Help-Seeking for Mental Health Concerns "Normal" for College Athletes? A Social Norm Perspective.

As mental health issues are prevalent among athletes, research is warranted to examine athletes' help-seeking for mental health concerns. This study examined the relationship between social norms and college athletes' mental health help-seeking intentions. Analysis of cross-sectional survey data from 290 college athletes in the United States and Canada revealed that after accounting for key control variables, descriptive norms from parents (i.e., perceptions that parents would seek help) were positively associated with athletes' help-seeking intentions. Descriptive norms from coaches, teammate

Evaluating Social Determinants of Health-Based Alternatives to Race-Based Cognitive Normative Models.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Race and ethnicity are proxy measures of sociocultural factors that influence cognitive test performance. Our objective was to compare different regression-based cognitive normative models adjusting for demographics and different combinations of easily accessible/commonly used social determinants of health (SDoH) factors, which may help describe cognitive performance variability historically captured by ethnoracial differences. METHODS: We performed cross-sectional analyses on data from Black and White participants without mild cognitive impairment/dementia in the A

Masculine Norms and Their Associations With Social Anxiety and Body Appreciation Among College Men in the United States.

Previous research has identified the link between conformity to masculine norms and negative mental health outcomes. The present study thus examined how conformity to eight distinct masculine norms is associated with social anxiety and body appreciation among a sample of 271 college men living in the United States. College men living in the United States filled out an online questionnaire that assessed the variables of interest. Our main study variables-Conformity to Masculine Norms Inventory, Social Phobia Inventory, and Body Appreciation Scale-2-were analyzed cross-sectionally using linear h
