Social Determinants of Health and Preoperative Care.

Preoperative care exists as part of perioperative continuum during which anesthesiologists and surgeons optimize patients for surgery. These multispecialty efforts are important, particularly for patients with complex medical histories and those requiring major surgery. Preoperative care improves planning and determines the clinical pathway and discharge disposition. The role of nonmedical social factors in the preoperative planning is not well described in anesthesiology. Research to improve outcomes based on social factors is not well described for anesthesiologists but could be instrumental

The technology-dependent child and the socially marginalized family: a provisional framework.

The aim of the grounded theory investigation described in this article was to begin to develop an explanatory model of the transition of technology-dependent children to home- and community-based care that would account for variation in process and outcome. To study the transition process prospectively, the investigation was initiated during discharge planning and continued for 1 year following discharge. Data sources included participant observation at discharge planning meetings; interviews with family caregivers, health professionals, and community informants; videotapes; conceptually relev

Suicidal ideation and planning in adolescents: Temporal trends (2006-2022) and intersectional inequalities.

PURPOSE: To analyze temporal trends in suicidal ideation and planning among adolescents from 2006 to 2022, and to assess the association between intersectional inequalities and these outcomes. METHODS: A repeated cross-sectional study was conducted using data from four nationally representative epidemiological surveys (2006, 2011, 2016, and 2022), comprising 21,019 high school students aged 14-19 years. The Jeopardy Index was used to quantify cumulative social disadvantage based on sex, race/ethnicity, and maternal education. Suicidal ideation and planning were the primary outcomes, each cate

Scaling up family planning in Sierra Leone: A prospective cost-benefit analysis.

Family planning is commonly regarded as a highly cost-effective health intervention with wider social and economic benefits. Yet use of family planning services in Sierra Leone is currently low and 25.0% of married women have an unmet need for contraception. This study aims to estimate the costs and benefits of scaling up family planning in Sierra Leone. Using the OneHealth Tool, two scenarios of scaling up family planning coverage to currently married women in Sierra Leone over 2013-2035 were assessed and compared to a 'no-change' counterfactual. Our costing included direct costs of drugs, su

Real-time impaired control over drinking: The role of contextual influences during naturally occurring drinking episodes.

BACKGROUND: Impaired control over drinking is a central feature of Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD), yet little within-person research on impaired control is available. As a result, there is little research regarding the dynamic impact of social drinking context on impaired control. The current study sought to fill these gaps, testing a sequential mediation model wherein social drinking context predicted episode-specific deviations in perceived impaired control, which indirectly predicted daily negative consequences via drinking more than planned. We also modeled if estimated blood alcohol concentra

A randomized community trial of enhanced family planning outreach in Rakai, Uganda.

A randomized community trial of a family planning outreach program was conducted in Rakai District, Uganda. Five communities received standard services; six intervention communities received additional family planning information, counseling, and contraceptive methods from government service providers and community-based volunteer agents using social marketing and other strategies. Condom use was promoted in all of the communities. The community-based family planning outreach program was implemented in two phases--1999-2000 (early) and 2001(late)--and its impact was evaluated by means of popul

Documentation of person-centred health plans for patients with acute coronary syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Personalised care planning is argued for but there is a need to know more about what the plans actually contain. AIM: To describe the content of person-centred health, plans documented at three healthcare levels for patients with acute coronary syndrome. DESIGN: Patients with acute coronary syndrome aged under 75 years and admitted to two coronary care units at a university hospital were enrolled in the study. This retrospective descriptive study documented 89 person-centred health plans at three healthcare levels: hospital, outpatient and primary care. In total, 267 health plans

Future care planning of adults with childhood-onset neurodevelopmental disabilities: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Advances in medicine have increased the life expectancy of adults with neurodevelopmental disabilities (ND). These individuals often reside with aging family caregivers, who also experience age-related health issues. However, many caregivers lack future care plans for their adult children. Thus, there is a pressing need for practical solutions for family-centered future care planning (FCP). AIMS: To summarize the literature on the key components of FCP for adults with ND and their familial caregivers. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: This scoping review adhered to the Joanna Briggs Instit

[The policy of human biological reproduction in Brazil].

The author presents some of the historical determinations of the policies of human reproduction in Brazil, placing them among other social policies. She argues that reproductive profile of the social classes depends upon not only the biological reproduction, but also upon the work power.

Interventions addressing health-related social needs among patients with cancer.

Health-related social needs are prevalent among cancer patients; associated with substantial negative health consequences; and drive pervasive inequities in cancer incidence, severity, treatment choices and decisions, and outcomes. To address the lack of clinical trial evidence to guide health-related social needs interventions among cancer patients, the National Cancer Institute Cancer Care Delivery Research Steering Committee convened experts to participate in a clinical trials planning meeting with the goal of designing studies to screen for and address health-related social needs among can

[Needs-based equity: an international comparison].

The distribution of healthcare resources represents a major challenge for modern health systems. This article compares how Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, Sweden, and England plan their healthcare provision to achieve needs-based equity. German outpatient healthcare planning relies mainly on fixed physician-to-population ratios and covers only physicians and psychotherapists. In contrast, other countries use more comprehensive approaches: The Netherlands regulates training capacities for 79 different health professions using simulation models to predict future workforce needs. Austria integ

Payment Structures That Support Social Care Integration With Clinical Care: Social Deprivation Indices and Novel Payment Models.

The U.S. lags behind other developed countries in the use of indices and novel reimbursement models to adjust for social determinants of health (SDH) in medicine. This may be due in part to the inadequate body of research regarding outcomes after implementation of healthcare payments designed to address SDH. This perspective article focuses on four models employed both internationally and domestically to outline the implementation, successes, limitations, and research needed to support national application of SDH models. A brief history of prior models is introduced as a primer to the current

Social Work-Supported Strategies to Reduce Postoperative Readmissions in Orthopedic Surgery: A Narrative Review.

Postoperative readmissions in orthopedic surgery remain a persistent cause of patient morbidity and increased healthcare costs, many of which are preventable through improved care coordination. Social workers are uniquely positioned to address psychosocial and structural barriers influencing postoperative recovery. This narrative review examined peer-reviewed literature published between 2000 and 2025 using PubMed, Scopus, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), and Google Scholar. Eligible studies included U.S.-based articles evaluating social work roles in discharg
