[Loneliness as a health issue: a new challenge for healthcare systems and nursing].

. Loneliness as a health issue: a new challenge for healthcare systems and nursing. Loneliness has long been considered mainly a psychological or social condition. However, growing scientific evidence has identified loneliness as a major health determinant associated with poorer clinical outcomes, increased healthcare utilization, reduced quality of life, and higher mortality. Demographic ageing, weakening social networks, chronic diseases, socioeconomic vulnerability, and the impact of the covid-19 pandemic have contributed to making loneliness a widespread public health issue affecting all a

Prescribing for the patient and the planet: a pragmatic feasibility study of a behaviour change intervention to reduce liquid amoxicillin prescribing in primary care.

BACKGROUND: Oral liquid medicines can be clinically appropriate but may be used when solid oral formulations are feasible, with implications for medicine costs and environmental sustainability. We evaluated the feasibility of GPILL, a theory-informed intervention using prescribing feedback, social norms and information on formulation-associated carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) emissions to support reduced liquid amoxicillin prescribing in primary care. METHODS: The intervention was called 'GPILL' which stands for a 'Green Prescribing Intervention to Lower Liquids' and was adapted from an exis

Data Resource Profile: The Enhanced Prescribing Database (EPD) in Northern Ireland.

INTRODUCTION: The Enhanced Prescribing Database (EPD) is a comprehensive electronic database capturing detailed information on all Health and Social Care Northern Ireland (HSCNI) prescriptions dispensed in community pharmacies across Northern Ireland (the publicly funded healthcare system in Northern Ireland, equivalent to the NHS elsewhere in the United Kingdom). Established in 2010 by the Health and Social Care Business Services Organisation (HSC BSO), the EPD provides a valuable resource for monitoring prescribing practices and supporting population-based research. METHODS: When pharmacies

Antibiotic prescribing practices, perceived constraints, and views on antimicrobial resistance among general and orthopedic surgeons in central India.

India has one of the world's highest burdens of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Broad-spectrum antibiotics are routinely and empirically initiated in surgery and orthopedic departments, contributing to the AMR. This study aimed to explore the capabilities, opportunities and motivation that influence antibiotic prescribing practices of general and orthopedic surgeons in Central India. This qualitative study was guided by the Capability, Opportunity, Motivation-Behavior model (COM-B) and the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF). Semi-structured interviews were conducted until redundancy was achie

Uncanny scripts: understanding pharmaceutical emplotment in the aboriginal context.

This article outlines a new social reality of global psycho-pharmaceutical prescribing: the pharmaceutical family, or ;phamily.' Ethnographic case studies from Manitoba, Canada (2002 to 2004) show how pharmaceutical emplotment, involving a synergy between cultural and drug scripts, can have uncanny consequences for vulnerable groups, such as Aboriginal children. Observations and interview transcripts of high prescribing doctors are analyzed to understand the prescribing logic of using psychoactive medication, such as methylphenidate, in young Aboriginal children diagnosed with FASD and/or ADHD

Antibiotic prescribing practices of community health extension workers in East Central Uganda: an exploratory qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Antibiotic misuse at the community level remains a critical contributor to antimicrobial resistance, particularly in resource-constrained settings. Community Health Extension Workers (CHEWs) play a pivotal role in primary healthcare delivery and antibiotic access, yet little is known about how they navigate prescribing decisions amid systemic limitations, social expectations and ethical pressures. OBJECTIVE: This study explored CHEWs' perceptions, practices and experiences related to antibiotic prescribing and dispensing in resource-constrained settings, with particular attention

Childhood Respiratory Outpatient Visits Correlate With Socioeconomic Status and Drive Geographic Patterns in Antibiotic Prescribing.

BACKGROUND: Reducing geographic disparities in antibiotic prescribing is a central public health priority to combat antibiotic resistance, but drivers of this variation have been unclear. METHODS: We measured how variation in outpatient visit rates (observed disease) and antibiotic prescribing rates per visit (prescribing practices) contributed to geographic variation in per capita antibiotic prescribing in Massachusetts residents younger than 65 years between 2011 and 2015. RESULTS: Of the difference in per capita antibiotic prescribing between high- and low-prescribing census tracts in Mas

Arts on prescription for wellbeing in adults: systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Arts on Prescription is a social prescribing model in which health professionals refer adults to community-based artistic activities led by artists or musicians, with the goal of promoting wellbeing and mental health. This systematic review aimed to investigate whether Arts on Prescription improves wellbeing and reduces symptoms of depression and anxiety. METHODS: PubMed, PsycINFO and Cochrane CENTRAL were searched in November 2024, following a previously developed search strategy. The selection of studies, quality assessment and data extraction were carried out independently by

From prescribing dilemma to knowledge in practice: The ontological politics of benzodiazepines and Z-drugs.

The discrepancy between official guidelines and clinical practice is hardly more pronounced than in the case of benzodiazepines and Z-drugs, also known as benzodiazepine receptor agonists (BZRA). Using social-constructionist positioning theory, we unravel how health care professionals deal with the dilemma of prescribing this medication. Our results reveal a prescribing spectrum that is discursively organised around four different storylines used by professionals. The storylines are organised along three axes that are related to a) prescribers' opinions on prescribing and the negotiation of th

Attitudes toward Social Issues Related to Opioid Use among Palliative Care Physicians.

PURPOSE: This study investigated palliative care physicians' attitudes regarding social issues related to opioid use. METHODS: An email survey was sent to 674 physicians who were members of the Korean Society for Hospice and Palliative Care (KSHPC). RESULTS: Data from 66 physicians were analyzed (response rate, 9.8%). About 70% of participants stated that their prescribing patterns were not influenced by social issues related to opioid use, and 90% of participants thought that additional regulations should be limited to non-cancer pain. Under the current circumstances, pain education for phy

Stronger Together: A Qualitative Exploration of Social Connectedness in Parkinson's Disease in the Digital Era.

PURPOSE: Social isolation is a common consequence of Parkinson's disease (PD), and social prescribing has become a crucial aspect for fostering well-being in this population. In fact, group work has been shown to improve levels of social connectedness in older adults across different domains. Increased technology use in older adults may also contribute to increased social connections, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. Still, the impact of digital use on social connectedness remains to be further explored in individuals with PD. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the perc

Artificial intelligence predicts healthcare workers' antibiotic use intentions from psychological and behavioral measures across multiple theories.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) remains a global health priority, partly driven by non-guideline-concordant antibiotic prescribing among healthcare workers. Existing interventions often overlook the psychological and contextual factors that shape prescribing behaviour. This study integrated behavioural theory with explainable machine learning to identify psychological predictors of intention to use antimicrobials appropriately among clinicians. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 1135 healthcare workers from four public hospitals in China. Participants completed questionnaires based on

Assessing the impact of social distancing measures implemented during COVID-19 pandemic on medications for opioid use disorder in West Virginia.

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluates if social distancing measures instituted during the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic were associated with a reduction in Medication for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) prescribing in West Virginia. The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated the quick implementation of public health interventions such as social distancing. This led to the use of telemedicine in the clinical setting however implementing telemedicine involves system level and infrastructure level changes within a healthcare environment. This could cause a barrier to MOUD delivery as it is oft

Integrated arts engagement as preventive infrastructure for active and healthy aging: a conceptual and policy framework.

Population aging is changing the work of public health. Longer lives require not only medical treatment, but also support for functional ability, social connection, meaning, participation, and everyday wellbeing. Arts engagement is increasingly discussed in relation to health, yet arts activities often remain treated as cultural or recreational provision rather than as part of preventive public health systems. This conceptual article develops the idea of integrated community arts engagement as a framework for understanding how arts participation can contribute to healthy aging. The framework d

Links between the amount of antipsychotic medication prescribed per population at general practice level, local demographic factors and medication selection.

BACKGROUND: Antipsychotic medications are the first-line pharmacological intervention for severe mental illnesses (SMI) such as schizophrenia and other psychoses, while also being used to relieve distress and treat neuropsychiatric symptoms in dementia. Our aim was to examine the factors relating to antipsychotic prescribing in general practices across England and how cost changes in recent years have impacted on antipsychotic prescribing. METHODS: The study examined over time the prescribing volume and prices paid for antipsychotic medication by agent in primary care. Monthly prescribing in

Using OpenPrescribing.net to evaluate neighbourhood-level prescribing of inhalers for asthma and COPD.

Prescribing of inhalers for asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is complicated due to multiple treatment pathways, diverse products, and variability in patients' needs and usage habits. Factors such as social deprivation, air quality, and differences in access to primary care influence both demand on respiratory medications and the rate and manner in which they are prescribed. Inhaler prescribing metrics are valuable for analysing temporal and geographic prescribing patterns across socio-economic groups, whether to identify areas with higher disease incidence or to assess problema

Frailty, loneliness and social isolation in older adults: a holistic approach for district nursing.

This article explores frailty and its links to loneliness and social isolation among older adults and the key role of district nurses in community-based early identification and management. Frailty, often linked with loneliness and social isolation, increases the risk of hospitalisation and adverse outcomes. Current assessment tools, such as the Rockwood Clinical Frailty Scale, may inadequately address the multidimensional nature of frailty. The author suggests combining the Edmonton Frailty Scale with the University of California, Los Angeles Loneliness Scale for a more holistic approach, alo

Changing patterns of opioid agonist therapy prescribing in a network of specialised clinics providing care to people with opioid use disorder in Victoria, Australia, 2015 to 2023.

INTRODUCTION: Long-acting injectable buprenorphine (LAIB) reduces the frequency of contact with opioid agonist therapy (OAT) service providers. Limited data exist on OAT prescribing in Australia after the introduction of subsidised LAIB prescribing in September 2019. This ecological study describes trends in OAT prescribing between 2015 and 2023 across a network of primary care services in Victoria, Australia. METHODS: We utilised electronic medical records from 17 clinics in Victoria that provide services to people with opioid dependence to describe OAT prescribing patterns. We described the
