Neural response to the observable self in social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Distorted images of the observable self are considered crucial in the development and maintenance of social anxiety. We generated an experimental situation in which participants viewed themselves from an observer's perspective when exposed to scrutiny and evaluation by others. Method Twenty patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD) and 20 control subjects were assessed using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during the public exposure of pre-recorded videos in which they were each shown performing a verbal task. The examiners acted as the audience in the experiment and

Cardiovascular responses to mental activation of social support schemas.

While perceived social support appears to be associated with buffered cardiovascular reactivity to short-term stressors, its impact on cardiovascular recovery is less clear. This relationship might be affected by trait hostility, with hostile individuals benefiting less from social support. However, despite the possibility that support provision might enhance well-being, limited empirical work has manipulated this in a laboratory context. The present study sought to investigate whether mentally activated support provision and support receipt influenced cardiovascular recovery from cognitive st

Neuroendocrine changes and natriuresis in response to social stress in rats.

Sympathetic activation is detected by the tachycardic, hypertensive and hyperthermic responses during social conflicts in rodents and primates. Sympathetic nervous system activation promoting sodium retention has long been recognized to play a significant role in the development and maintenance of salt-sensitive hypertension. The objective was to investigate neuroendocrine activation and renal sodium excretion in response to chronic social stress. Male Wistar rats were subjected to social stress in accordance with the resident-intruder paradigm. Intruder rats were subjected to social confronta

After the wave-the Centrelink Social Work response offshore.

Communities worldwide were affected by the tsunamis that struck a dozen Indian Ocean nations on 26 December 2004. More than 300,000 people were killed or left missing as a result of the tragedy. The Australian Government played a key role in the disaster response overseas and in Australia. As part of a whole-of-government response to the crisis, eight Centrelink Social Workers were deployed to tsunami-affected areas for two weeks after the initial disaster to provide personal support to Australian victims and their families. This paper presents the service delivery framework adopted offshore a

Self-reported and actual physiological responses in social phobia.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the current study was to compare physiological reactions and self-reports of bodily sensations for social phobics, clinically anxious and non-anxious controls across four tasks. DESIGN: A within-group design was used in which each participant took part in four tasks. Two were designed to be demanding, either physically (riding an exercise bicycle) or mentally (mental arithmetic task), while two, a mental imagery task (personally relevant situation) and a social conversation, were designed specifically to be anxiety provoking. METHODS: Of the 54 participants, 18 were ge

[Psychopathological mechanisms of socially dangerous acts and the problem of responsibility].

The authors discuss the problems of forensic-psychiatric expert examination related to the responsibility of persons suffering from different mental disorders. In addition to the assessment of the clinical picture of a mental disease, it is necessary to take into consideration (as fully as possible) the genesis and character of the committed socially dangerous action (SDA). For this purpose it is recommended that the concept of the psychopathological mechanisms of SDA worded by the authors and their classification be made use of. The establishment in a mental patient of one of the distinguishe

Hostility, anger expression, cardiovascular responsivity, and social support.

Sixty male subjects completed the Cook-Medley Hostility Scale (Ho), the anger-in, anger-out, and anger-discuss measures of anger expression from the Framingham Heart Study, and a measure of social support. Subjects also performed two challenging tasks while systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and pulse rate (PR) were monitored. Neither SBP, DBP, nor PR responses to the tasks were found to be related to the Ho or anger expression scales. Quality of social support was not found to be related to the Ho scale but was related negatively to the anger-discuss scale. The mor

Adolescents' Hormonal Responses to Social Stress and Associations with Adolescent Social Anxiety and Maternal Comfort: A Preliminary Study.

Both social support and social stress can impact adolescent physiology including hormonal responses during the sensitive transition to adolescence. Social support from parents continues to play an important role in socioemotional development during adolescence. Sources of social support and stress may be particularly impactful for adolescents with social anxiety symptoms. The goal of the current study was to examine whether adolescent social anxiety symptoms and maternal comfort moderated adolescents' hormonal response to social stress and support. We evaluated 47 emotionally healthy 11- to 14

Can autism spectrum disorders and social anxiety disorders be differentiated by the social responsiveness scale in children and adolescents?

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as well as social phobia (SP), and selective mutism (SM) are characterised by impaired social interaction. We assessed the validity of the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS) to differentiate between ASD, and SP/SM. Raw scores were compared in 6-18 year old individuals with ASD (N = 60), SP (N = 38), SM (N = 43), and typically developed (N = 42). Sensitivity and specificity were examined. The three disorders showed overlapping SRS scores. Especially in boys with SM (ROC-AUC = .81), presence of ASD was overestimated by the SRS. A combination of three disorder specif

Social interventions in times of crisis: Community perceptions of integrating social determinants and equity into the COVID-19 response.

In the wake of the 2020 crisis, scientific and governmental authorities sought to formally integrate social determinants and equity into the COVID-19 pandemic response. This article offers an empirical examination of COVID-19 social interventions presented as equitable with how stratified communities experienced these measures on the ground. We combine qualitative findings from a content analysis of State of California equity policies (n = 12) on housing security, economic relief, and essential workforce with semi-structured interviews (n = 79) conducted across three structurally unequal commu

Higher Intersubject Variability in Neural Response to Narrative Social Stimuli Among Youth With Higher Social Anxiety.

OBJECTIVE: Social anxiety is associated with alterations in socioemotional processing, but the pathophysiology remains poorly understood. Movies present an opportunity to examine more naturalistic socioemotional processing by providing narrative and sensory context to emotion cues. This study aimed to characterize associations between neural response to contextualized social cues and social anxiety symptoms in children. METHOD: Data from the Healthy Brain Network (final N = 740; age range 5-15 years) were split into discovery and replication samples to maximize generalizability of findings. A

A normative model of brain responses to social scenarios reflects the maturity of children and adolescents' social-emotional abilities.

The rapid brain maturation in childhood and adolescence accompanies the development of socio-emotional functioning. However, it is unclear how the maturation of the neural activity drives the development of socio-emotional functioning and individual differences. This study aimed to reflect the age dependence of inter-individual differences in brain responses to socio-emotional scenarios and to develop naturalistic imaging indicators to assess the maturity of socio-emotional ability at the individual level. Using three independent naturalistic imaging datasets containing healthy participants (n

Early childhood social reticence and neural response to peers in preadolescence predict social anxiety symptoms in midadolescence.

BACKGROUND: Early childhood social reticence (SR) and preadolescent social anxiety (SA) symptoms increase the risk for more severe SA in later adolescence. Yet, not all at-risk youth develop more severe SA. The emergence of distinct patterns of neural response to socially evocative contexts during pivotal points in development may help explain this discontinuity. We tested the extent to which brain function during social interactions in preadolescence influenced the effects of SA and early childhood SR on predicting SA symptoms in midadolescence. METHODS: Participants (N = 53) were assessed f

Mild to severe social fears: ranking types of feared social situations using item response theory.

Social anxiety disorder is one of the most common mental disorders, and is associated with long term impairment, distress and vulnerability to secondary disorders. Certain types of social fears are more common than others, with public speaking fears typically the most prevalent in epidemiological surveys. The distinction between performance- and interaction-based fears has been the focus of long-standing debate in the literature, with evidence performance-based fears may reflect more mild presentations of social anxiety. This study aims to explicitly test whether different types of social fear

Aberrant reward center response to partner reputation during a social exchange game in generalized social phobia.

OBJECTIVE: Generalized social anxiety disorder (GSAD) is characterized by excessive fear of public scrutiny and reticence in social engagement. Previous studies have probed the neural basis of GSAD often using static, noninteractive stimuli (e.g., face photographs) and have identified dysfunction in fear circuitry. We sought to investigate brain-based dysfunction in GSAD during more real-world, dynamic social interactions, focusing on the role of reward-related regions that are implicated in social decision-making. METHODS: Thirty-six healthy individuals (healthy control [HC]) and 36 individu

Hormone responses to social stress in abstinent alcohol-dependent subjects and social drinkers with no history of alcohol dependence.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have described blunted stress hormone responses after pharmacological activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis in sober alcoholics. The aim of the present study was to compare ACTH, cortisol, and prolactin responses to a psychological stressor in abstinent alcohol-dependent subjects matched to healthy control subjects. METHODS: Individuals who met DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for a history of alcohol dependence but not for other axis I disorders were included in the study (n = 18; mean duration of abstinence +/- SEM, 3.5 +/- 5.7 years). The linkage between chronotype, social jetlag, and responses to sleep inertia.

This research explores the interplay between chronotype, sleep inertia (SI), and social jetlag (SJL), examining whether an interaction between chronotype and SJL increases susceptibility to SI in individuals with an evening chronotype, due to their more pronounced SJL. However, a minimal correlation between SJL and SI was observed. The study included 231 participants, all of whom completed a series of questionnaires, including the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ), the Munich ChronoType Questionnaire (MCTQ), and the Sleep Inertia Questionnaire (SIQ). Our findings indicated that indiv

Individual differences in responses to anger recall: The role of social inhibition.

The current study aimed to examine the role of social inhibition (SI) and its underlying facets (behavioral inhibition, interpersonal sensitivity, and social withdrawal) in explaining individual differences in anger-induced autonomic reactivity and recovery. The sample consisted of 218 undergraduate students (Mage = 20.3, SD = 2.8; 80 % women). Participants completed the 15-item Social Inhibition Questionnaire and participated in either the Anger Recall task (n = 143) or the Neutral Recall task (n = 75), while continuous blood pressure, electrodermal activity, and an electrocardiogram were rec
