Mass Shootings in Major U.S. Cities: The Limited Role of Mental Health and Substance Use Treatment Access Compared to Structural Factors.

BackgroundMass shooting events (MSEs) continue to rise in the United States, posing significant public health concerns. The link between accessibility to these treatments and MSEs remains unclear. This study investigates this relationship in major U.S. metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs), accounting for socioeconomic variables. We hypothesized that limited access to mental health and substance use treatment would be associated with increased MSE incidence.MethodsThis cross-sectional study analyzed data from 2015 to 2019 from the Gun Violence Archive (GVA) and the Opioid Environment Policy Sc

Perception of Western governments' hostility to Islam among European Muslims before and after ISIS: the important roles of residential segregation and education.

Perception of Western governments' hostility to Islam is one of the indicating features of Islamic fundamentalism and, in some cases, is serving as a pull to join extremist groups. In this paper, using data from two waves of a cross-national survey, we investigate what affects European Muslims' opinions about Western governments. We find that residential segregation is associated with perceived hostility of Western governments to Islam. Further, we find that Muslims living in segregated neighbourhoods and enclaves have a higher probability of believing that Western governments are hostile to I

The neighborhood context of adolescent mental health.

Mental health disorders in adolescence are pervasive, often carry into adulthood, and appear to be inversely associated with social status. We examine how structural aspects of neighborhood context, specifically, socioeconomic stratification and racial/ethnic segregation, affect adolescent emotional well-being by shaping subjective perceptions of their neighborhoods. Using a community-based sample of 877 adolescents in Los Angeles County, we find that youth in low socioeconomic status (SES) neighborhoods perceive greater ambient hazards such as crime, violence, drug use, and graffiti than thos

Atypical brain function hierarchy in autism spectrum disorder: insights from a novel analytical approach based on neuronal oscillation pattern.

Hierarchy is the basic character of the human brain. Neuronal oscillation is one of the fundamental features of brain function, revealing abnormal hierarchical structures in psychiatric disorders from a system-level perspective. However, to date, no research has yet quantified the normal and abnormal brain functional hierarchy based on oscillation patterns. Therefore, this study aimed to quantify brain hierarchy based on neuronal oscillation patterns using the wide-scale information across multiple frequency bands of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data and further investigate aty

Subcortical brain volumes, cortical thickness and cortical surface area in families genetically enriched for social anxiety disorder - A multiplex multigenerational neuroimaging study.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a disabling psychiatric condition with a genetic background. Brain alterations in gray matter (GM) related to SAD have been previously reported, but it remains to be elucidated whether GM measures are candidate endophenotypes of SAD. Endophenotypes are measurable characteristics on the causal pathway from genotype to phenotype, providing insight in genetically-based disease mechanisms. Based on a review of existing evidence, we examined whether GM characteristics meet two endophenotype criteria, using data from a unique sample of SAD-patients and th

Resting-state EEG connectome topology and social norm processing in healthy young adults.

Resting-state network topology may provide a powerful framework for understanding how large-scale brain organisation supports cognitive functions. However, the topological correlates of social cognition remain poorly characterised. This study examined whether individual differences in social cognition are associated with the global topology of the resting-state functional connectome derived from high-density EEG across canonical frequency bands. Twenty-eight healthy young adults underwent a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment, including measures of global cognition, theory of mind, emp

Action Categories in Lateral Occipitotemporal Cortex Are Organized Along Sociality and Transitivity.

UNLABELLED: How neural specificity for distinct conceptual knowledge categories arises is central for understanding the organization of semantic memory in the human brain. Although there is a large body of research on the neural processing of distinct object categories, the organization of action categories remains largely unknown. In particular, it is unknown whether different action categories follow a specific topographical organization on the cortical surface analogously to the category-specific organization of object knowledge. Here, we tested whether the neural representation of action k

Social determinants of breast cancer risk, stage, and survival.

PURPOSE: Social determinants of health that have been examined in relation to breast cancer incidence, stage at diagnosis, and survival include socioeconomic status (income, education), neighborhood disadvantage, unemployment, racial discrimination, social support, and social network. Other social determinants of health include medical distrust, immigration, status, inadequate housing, food insecurity, and geographic factors such as neighborhood access to health services. Socioeconomic factors influence risk of breast cancer. For all racial/ethnic groups, breast cancer incidence rates tend to

High-Impact Participation? Social Activities, Activity Frequency, and Older Adult Cognition.

ObjectivesThere is growing recognition that social participation may help attenuate cognitive decline in older ages. Unfortunately, previous research often relies on participation index measures, which may obfuscate associations among cognition, specific activities, and the frequency of partaking in those activities.MethodsData are from six waves of the Health and Retirement Study (N = 20,696). Regression models test how associations between social participation and cognition vary by social activity and by multiple specifications of activity frequency.ResultsUsing a participation index, any ne

The big mixup: Neural representation during natural modes of primate visual behavior.

The primate brain has evolved specialized visual capacities to navigate complex physical and social environments. Researchers studying cortical circuits underlying these capacities have traditionally favored the use of simplified tasks and brief stimulus presentations in order to isolate cognitive variables with tight experimental control. As a result, operational theories about visual brain function have come to emphasize feature detection, hierarchical stimulus encoding, top-down task modulation, and functional segregation in distinct cortical areas. Recently, however, experimental paradigms

Heart rate variability as candidate endophenotype of social anxiety: A two-generation family study.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is the extreme fear and avoidance of one or more social situations. The goal of the current study was to investigate whether heart rate variability (HRV) during resting state and a social performance task (SPT) is a candidate endophenotype of SAD. METHODS: In this two-generation family study, patients with SAD with their partner and children, and their siblings with partner and children took part in a SPT (total n = 121, 9 families, 3-30 persons per family, age range: 8-61 years, 17 patients with SAD). In this task, participants had to watch and evalu

Social determinants of health as predictors of latent symptom clusters in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis: A secondary analysis of the HOPE consortium randomized trial.

The aims of this study were to characterize symptom clusters and examine the influence of social determinants of health (SDOH) on symptom cluster membership among people receiving maintenance hemodialysis and experiencing chronic pain. This study utilized baseline data collected from the 643 patients enrolled in the HOPE Consortium Trial designed to test the efficacy of an intervention to reduce chronic pain. Latent profile analyses were performed to characterize symptom clusters. SDOH variables were collected using self-report and the Census Geocoder. Five distinct clusters of symptoms were i

Pushing the boundary of child well-being: A spatial examination of child mortality in transition zones of extreme economic inequality and material hardship.

How do patterns of socioeconomic inequality shape the risk of child fatality in urban areas? Research has shown that both intentional and unintentional child deaths are concentrated in areas of social disadvantage. Yet in densely populated cities, child fatality risk may not follow smooth spatial patterns and instead exhibit abrupt shifts across neighborhood boundaries. This study applies a dissimilarity-based Bayesian spatial conditional autoregressive (CAR) model to detect localized discontinuities in child mortality risk associated with structural inequality. Using a continuous dissimilarit

County-Level Associations Between Structural Inequalities in Social Determinants of Health and Stroke Prevalence Among U.S. Adults: An Ecologic Study.

INTRODUCTION: Women and racial minority groups bear a disproportionate burden of stroke. Stroke disparities have been partially explained by gender and race differences in individual-level SES and neighborhood-level education and residential segregation. This study explored whether structural sexism and structural racism, operationalized as structural inequalities between gender groups and between race-ethnic groups across multiple social determinants of health at the county level, could be contributors by investigating their associations with stroke prevalence. METHODS: County-level age-adju

Born on the wrong side of the tracks: Exploring the causal effects of segregation on infant health.

Prior research has found that a high level of residential racial segregation, or the degree to which racial/ethnic groups are isolated from one another, is associated with worsened infant health outcomes, particularly among non-Hispanic (NH) Black infant populations. However, because exposure to segregation is non-random, it is unclear whether and to what extent segregation is causally linked to infant health. To overcome this empirical limitation, we leverage exogenous variation in the placement of railroad tracks in the 19th century to predict contemporary segregation, an approach first intr

Structural racism and racial health disparities at the state level: A latent variable approach.

Introduction Structural racism is increasingly being recognized as a fundamental cause of racial health disparities. We used a novel measure of structural racism at the state level to examine the relationship between structural racism and disparities in death rates from firearm homicide, infant mortality, HIV, diabetes, stroke, hypertension, asthma, and kidney disease between non-Hispanic Black and non-Hispanic White people in the United States. Methods We used confirmatory factor analysis to measure the latent construct of structural racism for all 50 states. The model included seven indicato

The Relationship Between Structural Racism and Black-White Disparities in Fatal Police Shootings at the State Level.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to discern the relationship between state-level structural racism and Black-White disparities in police shootings of victims not known to be armed. METHODS: Using a Poisson regression, we evaluated the effect of structural racism on differences between states in Black-White disparities in fatal police shootings involving victims not known to be armed during the period from January 1, 2013 through June 30, 2017. We created a state racism index, which was comprised of five dimensions: (1) residential segregation; and gaps in (2) incarceration rates; (3

What about the men? Gender parity in occupational therapy: Qu'en est-il des hommes? La parité hommes-femmes en ergothérapie.

BACKGROUND: Gender parity is frequently raised as an equity issue in occupational therapy, with strategies proposed to recruit more men. PURPOSE: This article explores whether this is a legitimate equity concern. KEY ISSUES: Most employment is gender segregated; when gender balances change, the field either re-genders feminine or creates gender-segregated internal divisions. Men avoid feminized jobs because they pay less and hold less social status. They are a "step down" for men. In such jobs, men are disproportionately pushed into management positions, with better pay, more prestige, and l
