A meta-analytic review of the associations of personality, intelligence, and physical size with social status.

Theories have proposed diverse reasons for why individual differences such as personality traits lead to social status attainment in face-to-face groups. We integrated these different theoretical standpoints into a model with four paths from individual differences to status: a dominance, a competence, a virtue, and a micropolitics path. To investigate these paths, we meta-analyzed over 100 years of research on bivariate associations of personality traits, cognitive abilities, and physical size with the attainment of status-related outcomes in face-to-face groups (1,064 effects from 276 samples

The association between composite measures of social vulnerability and PICU admission for status asthmaticus.

BACKGROUND: Current knowledge of the impact of socioeconomic factors on the risk of admission to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) for asthma is limited. Using composite measures of social vulnerability-Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) and Child Opportunity Index (COI) 2.0-we compared patients admitted for status asthmaticus to the PICU and pediatric ward at Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA). We hypothesized patients with a high SVI and low COI are at higher risk for PICU admission. METHODS: Patients were identified using ICD-10 codes for asthma. Primary outcome was admission to P

Impact of social frailty on the association between driving status and disability in older adults.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to investigate whether the association between driving status and disability in older adults depends on social frailty. METHODS: This is a prospective study in a community setting. Participants were surveyed baseline conditions of social frailty and driving status (n = 4642, mean age: 71.7 years). Social frailty was defined according to criteria: going out less frequently, rarely visiting friends, feeling unhelpful to friends or family, living alone, and not talking with someone every day. Incident disability was prospectively followed up by their long-

Medicinal use and social status of the soap berry endod (Phytolacca dodecandra) in Ethiopia.

Berries from Phytolacca dodecandra L'Herit. (endod in Amharic) offer a readily available molluscicide to control schistosomiasis. Parts of the endod plant have been used as a detergent and as traditional medicine for centuries in Ethiopia. An interview survey was performed in the highlands of Ethiopia to provide information on the distribution of the plant, people's traditional use of it, their perception of the plant, and the potential for increased production and use of endod as a soap for indirect control of schistosomiasis. People of all ages report that they are familiar with the plant an

Affective disorders, social support, and health status in geriatric patients in a general hospital.

A randomized-sample taken from all elderly patients aged 70 years and over hospitalized for medical/surgical disorders was studied (N = 108) to determine the influence of health problems and social support on depression. According to DSM-III-R diagnostic criteria, 50.9% had psychiatric disorders and 15.7% had affective disorders. In the total sample, depressive symptoms significantly correlated with the existence of health problems and lack of social support, but independently considered, these variables did not have a significant influence on diagnoses of depressive disorders.

Marital status: association with social and economic circumstances, psychological state and outcomes of pregnancy.

We examined the association of marital status with economic, social and psychological factors and with the outcomes of pregnancy (defined as onset of labour, type of delivery, live and still births and birthweight). The study population was 1431 white women consecutively booking for antenatal care. Birth registrations were inspected. Of 278 women who were unmarried during pregnancy, 61 per cent were cohabiting, 26 per cent were living with adults other than the father and 13 per cent were living alone. Compared with the married women, unmarried women overall were, on average, younger, less edu

Role of social status and social environment on net survival in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia: A high-resolution population-based study.

BACKGROUND: The prognostic roles of social status and social environment in chronic lymphocytic leukemia have been highlighted in some solid tumors but remain unclear in hematological malignancies. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of individual social status (with socioprofessional category, SPC) and social environment (with European deprivation index, EDI) on net survival in a high-resolution population with CLL. METHODS: We included CLL patients from the Regional Register of Hematological Malignancies in Normandy belonging to the French Network of Cancer Registries

Educational and Racial Disparities in Breastfeeding: Associations with Work Status, Social Support, and Stress.

OBJECTIVE: Addressing the need to further characterize socioeconomic status (SES) to understand its influence on breastfeeding, we sought to identify patterns of breastfeeding at discharge by both race and educational attainment, as well as whether social support, stress, and employment status mediated these patterns. METHODS: This secondary analysis of the Measurement of Maternal Stress Study included 636 pregnant individuals who were surveyed on perceived stress, social support, and hours worked outside the home in their second and third trimesters. Race was categorized as white or People o

Exploring the status of online social support for older adults with cancer: A scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: The number of new cancer cases among older adults is rising, yet their social support needs remain unmet due to diminishing social networks with age. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, online technologies have provided increased opportunities for social support for this demographic via digital platforms such as online peer support groups, online communities, and chat rooms. This scoping review explores the current state of the use of online social support for older adults with cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This scoping review was based on the Arksey and O'Malley methodological framew

Who thrives in Canada? An Examination of social factors, healthcare access, and immigration status.

High-income countries like Canada report some of the worlds' highest life-satisfaction levels, yet less is known about how life satisfaction varies by race and immigration status. This study investigates the factors that influence subjective well-being among 8,063 adults from the Canadian Alliance of Healthy Hearts and Minds study recruited between 2014 and 2018, including a subset of 2,142 immigrants. Measures of demographic, socioeconomic, health, healthcare access, and self-reported ethnicity were investigated in relation to self-reported life satisfaction as measured by the validated Cantr

Specificity of cost and probability biases in social anxiety: Comparing status and belongingness threats.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety (SA) is characterized by concerns about the expected occurrence (probability) and anticipated distress (cost) of social threats. Unclear is whether SA correlates specifically with biased expectations of belongingness or status threats. AIMS: We aimed to discern if SA is uniquely tied to biased expectancies of either belongingness or status threats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We assessed 757 participants' perceptions of exclusion and put-down scenarios, analysing associations between SA and threat perceptions. DISCUSSION: Our findings support the status-sensitivity hyp

Immigrant Status and Social Ties: An Intersectional Analysis of Older Adults in the United States.

Diverse social ties are critical facilitators of well-being among older adults. Social ties might be especially important for aging immigrants who face multiple social and economic vulnerabilities over the life course. We investigated social ties (e.g., partners, children, other family, and friends) by immigrant status among older adults in the United States (U.S.). Data come from the 2018 Health and Retirement Study (N = 4,006), a national sample of older adults in the U.S. We used multivariable logistic regression to compare social ties (e.g., partners, children, other family, and friends) b

Corporate Social Responsibility in Family Firms: Status and Future Directions of a Research Field.

This systematic literature review contributes to the increasing interest regarding corporate social responsibility (CSR) in family firms-a research field that has developed considerably in the last few years. It now provides the opportunity to take a holistic view on the relationship dynamics-i.e., drivers, activities, outcomes, and contextual influences-of family firms with CSR, thus enabling a more coherent organization of current research and a sounder understanding of the phenomenon. To conceptualize the research field, we analyzed 122 peer-reviewed articles published in highly ranked jour

Childhood history of behavioral inhibition and comorbidity status in 256 adults with social phobia.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral inhibition (BI), a heritable temperament, predisposes one to an increased risk of social phobia. Recent investigations have reported that BI may also be a precursor to anxiety as well as depressive and alcohol-related disorders, which are frequently comorbid with social phobia. In the present study, we explored the relationship between BI and psychiatric disorders in 256 adults with a primary diagnosis of social phobia. METHODS: BI severity was retrospectively assessed with the Retrospective Self-Report of Inhibition (RSRI). The severity of social phobia and the presenc

Living status and psychological well-being: social comparison as a moderator in later life.

OBJECTIVES: Older adults who live alone have been found to have lower psychological well-being than their age peers who live with someone. This study examined whether downward social comparison, i.e. perceiving oneself as better than others, would moderate this relationship. METHOD: A total of 205 Chinese aged 60 years or over were recruited. They rated themselves and 'someone their age' on a list of personal descriptions. Downward social comparison was defined as the extent to which their ratings of self were better than ratings of age peers. Life satisfaction and depression were measured by

Health status and social conditions of the elderly in remote districts. Results of a screening programme.

In 1978 a cohort of 1040 individuals aged 65 years or over was screened by public health nurses in Kuusamo. The screening produced basic data about health status and social conditions for an intervention of active medical care of the elderly by means of a mobile unit in rural districts. The response rate of the screening was 90%. 72% of the men and 35% of the women lived with their spouse; 6% of the men and 20% of the women lived alone. Poor health was assessed least commonly (36%) by those living alone, and most commonly by women living with their spouse (51%), even though 87% of them were un

Social status modulates cooperative feedback processing: Electrophysiological evidence from an event-related potential study.

Collaboration is essential, as both one's own and others' performance impact outcomes. However, little is known about how social status affects performance and reward processing during cooperation. This study used event-related potentials (ERPs) to investigate neural responses during cooperative tasks with high- and low-status partners, where participants were assigned middle status after a math competition. ERP signals were recorded as they observed self-performance, partner performance, and cooperative outcomes. Results revealed asymmetric processing: participants referenced their performanc

Active social engagement and health among older adults: assessing differences by cancer survivorship status.

INTRODUCTION: The number of older adults who are cancer survivors is rapidly growing. Evidence is needed to inform interventions to support successful aging among older adults (including older adult cancer survivors). Active engagement with life, that is, spending time with family and/or close friends, may be related to health outcomes, but this concept remains understudied. METHODS: We used survey data to assess active engagement among older adults (ages 50 + years) from seven mid-Atlantic US states (n = 2,914), and geocoded their residence to collect collected measures of community availabi
