The third phase of HIV pandemic: social consequences of HIV/AIDS stigma & discrimination & future needs.

An overview of social responses to AIDS, characterized by high levels of stigma, discrimination central to the global AIDS challenge, as related to human dignity is described. Stigma is conceptualized as a problem of 'they' and 'us', or interactions perspective. Causes and consequences to enable the varied perspectives in understanding this third epidemic of social impact of HIV/AIDS are described. In the absence of an effective medical intervention, the social factors like stigma and discrimination attached to HIV/AIDS are a major obstacle in the curtailment of the disease requiring urgent ac

Marked by Association(s): A Social Network Approach to Investigating Mental Health-Related Associative Stigma.

With most scholarly attention directed toward understanding the stigma experiences of individuals with mental illness, less attention has been given to associative stigma: an understudied form of social exclusion and devaluation experienced by the social ties of stigmatized individuals. This study advances scholarly understanding of associative stigma by drawing on social network methods to better illuminate how the quantity and quality of social relationships with those dealing with mental illness impact experiences of perceived discrimination. Using a nationally representative sample from th

Relationships among functional social support, HIV-related stigma, social problem solving, and depressive symptoms in people living with HIV: a pilot study.

This cross-sectional exploratory study examined relationships among functional social support, HIV-related stigma, social problem solving, and depressive symptoms in a convenience sample of 30 men and nonpregnant women who sought care at two HIV outpatient clinics in the southeastern United States. Participants completed a set of self-report questionnaires at these clinics during scheduled regular visits. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Consistent with other HIV studies, participants in this sample were at high risk for depression. Depressive symptoms were associated with more

Positive Reframing of Psychosis Risk Reduces Social Stigma and Desire for Social Distance Among Adolescents: Moderating Roles of Prodromal Experiences, Sex, and Culture.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Communication about the at-risk mental state may shape not only clinical understanding but also peer-directed social evaluations. Prior work from our group has shown that positively reframing psychosis-risk feedback reduces perceived emotional harm and clinician stigma. The present study examined whether positive reframing influences adolescents' peer-directed social stigma and desire for social distance toward an at-risk youth, and whether these effects are moderated by adolescents' own distressing prodromal experiences, sex, and cultural background. METHODS: One hundred

From stigma to increased social acceptance? Living with Machado-Joseph disease in São Miguel, Azores, Portugal.

This study describes the experiences with the stigma attached to Machado-Joseph disease (MJD) in São Miguel Island, the Azores (Portugal). We draw on semi-structured interviews with persons with MJD, family members, healthcare professionals, and direct care providers recruited through the local patient's association (n = 28). Qualitative thematic analysis revealed three main themes: (i) the intense stigma associated with MJD in the past; (ii) the current tendency towards increased openness; and (iii) increased availability of information about MJD and support. The findings suggest that stigmat

Media portrayals and social stigma surrounding COVID-19 survivors: a content analysis of Chinese media coverage.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has generated widespread uncertainty, leading to an overabundance of information and fuelling public fear and confusion. Concerns regarding the transmissibility and long-term effects of the virus on survivors have exacerbated societal stigma towards those who have recovered from COVID-19. This study analyses Chinese media coverage to explore the ways in which COVID-19 survivors are portrayed and how these portrayals may contribute to the broader narrative of stigmatisation. METHODS: This study employs content analysis of 440 news articles from four major Chin

Comparing social stigma of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder: A quantitative experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Currently, we know little regarding how stigma attributed to eating disorders compares to that of other psychological disorders and additionally within different types of eating disorders. In the current study, we aimed to explore the stigmatisation of eating disorders by comparing the stigma attributed to anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder, utilising depression as a comparative control. METHODS: A total of 235 participants from the general population were randomly assigned to an anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, or depression cond

A qualitative examination of social identity and stigma among adolescents recovering from alcohol or drug use.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol and other drug (AOD) use disorders are stigmatized conditions, but little is known about youth's experience of this stigma, which may threaten their developing social identity and recovery process. This study investigates youth's perceptions of AOD use-related stigma in the context of their social identity. METHODS: This study uses data from 12 youth (ages 17-19) who were in recovery from problematic AOD use. Participants completed a Social Identity Mapping in Addiction Recovery (SIM-AR) exercise, in which they created a visual map of their social groups, and semi-struct

Youth-centered Recommendations to Address Social Stigma and Discrimination Against Unhoused Youth: An Integrative Literature Review.

Youth between ages 13 and 25 who experience homelessness face numerous barriers to excellent health, including social stigma and discrimination. Applying socio-ecological model and intersectionality theory, an integrative literature review was conducted. Peer-reviewed studies (N = 29) representing 808,296 participants extracted from four databases (CINAHL, MEDLINE, PsychINFO, SocINDEX) were analyzed. The studies included sources of discrimination and stigma from interpersonal interactions with support services staff upwards to policy and systemic levels with housing and justice systems. Health

Stigma, Social Cohesion, and HIV Risk Among Sexual and Gender Minorities in Two Cities in Zimbabwe.

Though stigma is a recognized contributor to the disproportionate HIV burden among sexual and gender minorities (SGM) in sub-Saharan Africa, data describing this association among Zimbabwean SGM are limited. We examined relationships between SGM stigma and HIV and the potential for social cohesion to moderate the association among Zimbabwean men who have sex with men, transgender women, and genderqueer individuals. Consenting participants (n = 1511) recruited through respondent-driven sampling for a biobehavioral survey in Harare and Bulawayo completed structured interviews and received HIV te

The Effect of Weight Stigma on Adolescent Health: Mediating and Moderating Roles of Social Support and Personality Traits.

Weight stigma is a common psychosocial stressor among adolescents and an important determinant of mental and physical well-being. However, the mechanisms through which it affects health outcomes remain insufficiently understood. This study explored the mediating and moderating roles of personality traits and perceived social support in the relationship between weight stigma and health outcomes in adolescents. A cross-sectional self-report study was conducted with 1,011 high school students (59.64% female; Mage = 16.50 years, SDage = 1.10), using validated measures of weight stigma, Big Five pe

Experiences of Affiliate Stigma and Depressive Symptoms in Caregivers of Autistic Children: The Moderating Effect of Social Support.

Caregivers with an autistic child often experience stigma, which can lead to detrimental mental health consequences. Affiliate stigma is the internalization of, and psychological responses to, stigma experienced due to an individual's association with a person who is stigmatized. Social support has been shown to mediate the relationship between affiliate stigma and depression in caregivers of special needs children. However, research on social support as a moderator of this relationship in autistic children has not been completed. We examined the associations between affiliate stigma, social s

Reducing anorexia nervosa stigma: an exploration of a social consensus intervention and the moderating effect of blameworthy attributions.

Background: Research suggests that blameworthy attributions towards individuals with anorexia nervosa are common, which in turn elicit more stigmatising attitudes towards those with the disorder. The social consensus approach has been found to reduce stigmatising attitudes in various domains and, as such, is a promising avenue to pursue for ameliorating stigma in anorexia nervosa.Aims: The present study primarily sought to investigate the effectiveness of a social consensus approach in reducing stigma towards individuals with anorexia nervosa. The study also examined if blameworthy attribution

The Impact of Social Stigma for Children with Cleft Lip and/or Palate in Low-resource Areas: A Systematic Review.

There are still children with cleft lip and/or palate (CLP) in low-resource areas who face social rejection. This stigma disadvantages children in education, employment, marriage, and community, and is exacerbated by barriers to care. Our study objective was to conduct a systematic review of the impact of social stigma of CLP for children in low-resource areas. We followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses guidelines. A systematic search was conducted of 3 databases: Ovid Embase, Ovid Medline, and the African Journal Online from 2000 to October 5 2018. Comm

Reconceptualizing Social Acceptance: Stigma, Prejudice, and the Developmental Implications of School Experiences of Students with Intellectual Disability.

Societal prejudices shape the social positioning of students with intellectual disability in educational contexts. This study explores how social acceptance is produced and contested through everyday interactions influenced by stigma, cultural norms, and institutional practices. Drawing on Goffman's conceptualization of stigma and Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems framework, social acceptance is treated as a relational and power-laden process rather than an individual trait. Using a qualitative phenomenological design, semi-structured interviews were conducted with teachers and parents of ch

Invisible Burdens: The Influence of Stigma and Social Determinants on Quality of Life in Perianal Fistulizing Crohn's Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Perianal fistulizing Crohn's disease (PFCD) is known to impact patients' quality of life (QoL). However, the interactions between PFCD activity itself with patients' psychosocial well-being and social determinants of health (SDOH) are not fully understood. METHODS: We conducted a survey study of adult patients with clinically active and inactive PFCD defined by the presence or absence of perianal pain and/or drainage between July 2023 and April 2024. The survey included the Crohn's anal fistula quality of life (CAF-QoL) scale, PROMIS scale, IBD Internalized Stigma Scale (modifie

Self-compassion mitigates the cognitive, affective, and social impact of courtesy stigma on parents of autistic children.

PURPOSE: Due to the courtesy stigma of autism spectrum disorder, many parents of autistic children are devaluated and discriminated against by the public. Despite the high prevalence of this courtesy stigma, very few studies have examined its negative effects on parents of autistic children and explored the factors that may protect the parents from these negative effects. The present study utilized a 2-year, two-wave prospective longitudinal design to examine the associations of courtesy stigma with adverse cognitive (self-stigma), affective (depressive and anxiety symptoms), and social (paren
