Structural neural correlates of impairments in social cognition in first episode psychosis.

Several studies have demonstrated that patients with schizophrenia show impairments in social cognition and current evidence indicate that this deficit is associated with abnormal activity in specific brain regions. In addition to functional imaging studies, we believe that the identification of structural correlates of social cognitive processes may help to better understand the neural underpinnings of these specific skills. The main objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between gray matter density and social cognitive deficits in first episode of schizophrenia spectrum

The role of social network structure and function in moderate and severe social and emotional loneliness: The Dutch SaNAE study in older adults.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness is a serious public health problem. This became even more visible during the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, the key social network aspects contributing to loneliness remain unknown. Here, we evaluated social network structure and function and associations with (moderate/severe) social and emotional loneliness in older adults. METHODS: This cross-sectional study includes online questionnaire data (SaNAE cohort, August-November 2020), in independently living Dutch adults aged 40 years and older. For the separate outcomes of social and emotional loneliness, associations with stru

Factor structure of the Social Phobia Scale (SPS) and the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS) in a clinical sample recruited from the community.

BACKGROUND: The Social Phobia Scale (SPS) and the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS) are widely used self-report questionnaires to assess symptoms of social anxiety. While SPS measures social performance anxiety, SIAS measures social interaction anxiety. They are mostly reported simultaneously, but there have not been consistent results of the joint factor structure and therefore no consistent recommendations on how to use and evaluate the questionnaires. This study aimed (1) to evaluate the underlying joint factor structure of the SPS and SIAS and (2) to test whether SPS and SIAS are rel

Unveiling interrelationships through structural equation modeling: family function, social networks, and social phobia in peritoneal dialysis patients.

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) enhances quality of life for end-stage renal disease patients, however, family function, social networks, and social phobia may significantly influence patient outcomes. This study explores the interrelationships among these factors in a Chinese population of PD patients, considering the socio-cultural context of Shenzhen as an immigrant city. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 259 PD patients from Shenzhen Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, recruited between December 2023 and April 2024. Participants completed validated questionnaires assess

The relationship between social network size and brain structure in older adults living with HIV.

The social brain hypothesis suggests that primate brains evolved to manage social group complexities. While chronic HIV infection is associated with both structural brain changes and social exclusion, the possibility that social experience may contribute to brain changes has not been studied in this population. Here, we aimed to estimate the direction and strength of the relationship between gray matter volume and social network size in older people living with HIV in Canada. Fifty-eight HIV + participants (3 women) from the Positive Brain Health Now cohort underwent structural brain imaging a

Social structure and habitat design affect the impact of a novel feeding enrichment for alligators.

Providing enrichment that expands the range of behavioral opportunities associated with food acquisition and environmental exploration is an important contributing factor to the well-being of zoo animals. These behaviors can be difficult to promote in carnivores, given their foraging strategies and the logistical, ethical, and financial challenges of providing live prey. In this study, we introduced a novel feeding enrichment to Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens' five adult American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) in an attempt to simulate a live prey organism within the exhibit and promote

Disadvantage of Social Sensitivity: Interaction of Oxytocin Receptor Genotype and Child Maltreatment on Brain Structure.

BACKGROUND: Oxytocin has received much attention as a prosocial and anxiolytic neuropeptide. In human studies, the G-allele of a common variant (rs53576) in the oxytocin receptor gene (OXTR) has been associated with protective properties such as reduced stress response and higher receptiveness for social support. In contrast, recent studies suggest a detrimental role of the rs53576 G-allele in the context of childhood maltreatment. To further elucidate the role of OXTR, gene by maltreatment interactions on brain structure and function were investigated. METHODS: Three hundred nine healthy par

Mapping the Social Network Structure and Composition of Black Individuals With Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Conditions.

OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to describe the social networks of Black individuals with rheumatic and musculoskeletal conditions and understand the clustering of health-related behaviors to inform future community-based, peer-led interventions. METHODS: We used an adapted Personal Network Survey for Clinical Research (PERSNET) to map the personal social networks of Black individuals with rheumatic conditions in Boston and Chicago. We used egocentric network analyses to quantify network composition and descriptive statistics and Welch's two-sample t-tests to assess network characteristics and b

Associations of Neurocognition and Social Cognition With Brain Structure and Function in Early-Onset Schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment is a core feature of schizophrenia that is more serious in patients with early-onset schizophrenia (EOS). However, the neuroimaging basis of cognitive functions, including neurocognition and social cognition, remains unclear in patients with EOS. METHODS: Forty-three patients with EOS underwent structural and resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging scans. Brain structure and function were evaluated through the analysis of brain gray matter volume (GMV) and amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF). They underwent comprehensive assessments for

How Social Structure Drives the Population Dynamics of the Common Vampire Bat (Desmodus rotundus, Phyllostomidae).

Social systems are major drivers of population structure and gene flow, with important effects on dynamics and dispersal of associated populations of parasites. Among bats, the common vampire bat (Desmodus rotundus) has likely one of the most complex social structures. Using autosomal and mitochondrial markers on vampires from Mexico, French Guiana, and North Brazil, from both roosting and foraging areas, we observed an isolation by distance at the wider scale and lower but significant differentiation between closer populations (<50 km). All populations had a low level of relatedness and showe

The latent structure of social anxiety disorder and the performance only specifier: a taxometric analysis.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is often treated as a discrete diagnostic entity that represents a naturally occurring class, though empirical evidence largely supports a dimensional conceptualization of social fears. Further, the inclusion of a "performance only" specifier in the DSM-5 implies that individuals who experience intense social anxiety exclusively in performance situations are distinct from those with broader social fears. The purpose of the present research was to examine the latent structure of SAD and the DSM-5 "performance only" specifier in a large nonclinical sample (n = 2019)

Network structure of social anxiety in patients with social anxiety disorder and university students: Examining the cognitive behavioral model and the role of mindfulness.

Self-focused attention, cost/probability bias, and avoidance behavior are maintaining factors of social anxiety. The manipulation of dispositional mindfulness has been shown to reduce social anxiety and its maintaining factors. This study examined the associations among dispositional mindfulness, self-focused attention, cost/probability bias, avoidance behavior, and social anxiety to explore the mechanism of mindfulness and its relationship with social anxiety in patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD) and university students. Data from 412 patients with SAD and 367 students were analyzed

Sex Work and Motherhood: Social and Structural Barriers to Health and Social Services for Pregnant and Parenting Street and Off-Street Sex Workers.

Our study documents the correlates of barriers to pregnancy and mothering among sex workers in Vancouver, Canada. We used baseline data from An Evaluation of Sex Workers' Health Access (AESHA), a prospective cohort of sex workers. Among the 399 sex workers who had ever been pregnant or had a child, 35% reported having ever experienced a barrier, with lower education, homelessness, and history of injecting drugs significantly correlated with pregnancy and mothering barriers. Our findings highlight a critical need for tailored and nonjudgmental services and supports, including improved programs

Quantifying Structural Disadvantage in HIV Prevention: Development and Validation of the HIV-Specific Social and Structural Determinants Index in the United States.

Structural inequities significantly shape disparities across the HIV care continuum, yet few validated tools exist to quantify HIV-specific structural vulnerability at the population level in the United States. This study introduces and validates the HIV-Specific Social and Structural Determinants of Health Index (HIV-SSDI), a multi-dimensional, state-level index designed to capture structural disadvantage relevant to HIV prevention and care. Using publicly available state-level index (2008-2023) spanning nine structural domains, we developed the HIV-SSDI through exploratory factor analysis wi

From Physical Distancing to Social Loneliness among Gay Men and Other Men Having Sex with Men in Belgium: Examining the Disruption of the Social Network and Social Support Structures.

Since the start of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, levels of loneliness have increased among the general population and especially among sexual minorities, such as gay men and other men who have sex with men, who already experienced more problems with social isolation before the pandemic. We analyzed how the disruption of the social network and social support structures by containment measures impact loneliness among gay and other men having sex with men. Our sample consisted of gay and other men having sex with men who had in person communication with family as well as heterosexual friends and homos

A Natural Disaster Exacerbates and Redistributes Disease Risk Among Free-Ranging Macaques by Altering Social Structure.

Climate change is intensifying extreme weather events, with severe implications for ecosystem dynamics. A key behavioural mechanism whereby animals may cope with such events is by altering their social structure, which in turn could influence epidemic risk. However, how and to what extent natural disasters affect disease risk via changes in sociality remains unexplored in animal populations. By simulating disease spread in free-living rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) before and after a hurricane, we demonstrate doubled pathogen transmission rates up to 5 years following the disaster, equivalen

The structure of the multidimensional scale of perceived social support: a meta-analytic confirmatory factor analysis.

One of the most popular instruments used to assess perceived social support is the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS). Although the original structure of the MSPSS was defined to include three specific factors (significant others, friends and family), studies in the literature propose different factor solutions. In this study, we addressed the controversial factor structure of the MSPSS using a meta-analytic confirmatory factor analysis approach. For this purpose, we utilized studies in the literature that examined and reported the internal structure of the MSPSS. Howev
