IMPORTANCE: Cognitive resilience refers to the general capacity of cognitive processes to be less susceptible to differences in brain structure from age- and disease-related changes. Studies suggest that supportive social networks reduce Alzheimer disease and related disorder (ADRD) risk by enhancing cognitive resilience, but data on specific social support mechanisms are sparse.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of individual forms of social support with a global neuroanatomical measure of early ADRD vulnerability and cognition.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cros

Objective: Benzodiazepines (BZD) are often prescribed to address sleep difficulties but many BZD users report a poor quality of sleep. Although social support was found to be associated with quality of sleep in a recent meta-analysis, this relationship was never studied in older BZD users. This study thus aims to examine how social support is associated with quality of sleep in older BZD users.Method: Seventy-two older adults (age 60-85) using BZD were recruited. Data was collected during the pre-test of the ''PASSE-60+; Support program for a successful withdrawal, NCT02281175'' study. Quality

Since its foundation, the State of Israel has been affected by terror violence toward its civilian population. For more than 45 years, the Israeli legislation has built a legal insurance allowing citizens casualties of such violence to benefit from specific coverage and support. The objective of this article is to describe the history, legal framework, and organization of social support for terror victims in Israel.

While perceived social support appears to be associated with buffered cardiovascular reactivity to short-term stressors, its impact on cardiovascular recovery is less clear. This relationship might be affected by trait hostility, with hostile individuals benefiting less from social support. However, despite the possibility that support provision might enhance well-being, limited empirical work has manipulated this in a laboratory context. The present study sought to investigate whether mentally activated support provision and support receipt influenced cardiovascular recovery from cognitive st

OBJECTIVE: To determine if nocturnal blood pressure (BP) dipping among non-Hispanic blacks is influenced by social support. Non-Hispanic blacks have higher rates of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality from hypertension and are more likely to have ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) that remains high at night (nondipping).
METHODS: A total of 68 non-Hispanic black normotensive and 13 untreated hypertensive participants (age 72 +/- 10 years, 48% female) free of clinical cardiovascular disease completed 24-hour ABP monitoring and a questionnaire that included a modified version of the CARDIA Stud

GOALS OF WORK: We investigated the effects of social support in the last 6 months of life for women who died of ovarian cancer.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study population included women enrolled in one of three Managed Care Organizations who died of ovarian cancer (1995-2000). Information was collected on demographics, living environment, presence of escorts to oncology encounters, comorbidities, medications, outpatient and inpatient encounters, and referrals to home health and hospice. Two characteristics of social support were examined: living with others and being escorted to one or more

This paper describes the frequency of women's disclosure of their HIV status, examines the extent to which they experience adverse social and physical consequences when others learn they are infected, and analyzes correlates of these negative outcomes. There were 257 HIV-positive women between the ages of 18 and 44, recruited from HIV/AIDS primary care clinics and from community sites, who completed a face-to-face interview. Women in the sample were 33 years old on average; 92% were African-American; 54% had less than 12 years of education; 56% had used intravenous drugs; and 30% knew they wer

The progressive muscular weakness brought on by muscular dystrophy causes the sufferer many problems in everyday life. Earlier studies in Sweden have shown that adults with hereditary muscular dystrophy often have difficulty in gaining access to rehabilitation. For this reason a special rehabilitation programme was drawn up and carried out, extending over a period of 18 months. The purpose of the study is to describe the participants' experience of social support in connection with the programme. Thirty-seven participants (21 women and 16 men) were interviewed. The analytical method was phenom

Psychiatric comorbidities have been shown to be important predictors of the outcome of alcoholism treatment. This study examines whether perceived lack of social support can be identified as an independent predictor of symptoms of depression experienced during alcoholism treatment over and above the effects of personality characteristics and the severity of alcohol and psychiatric history. We studied 189 alcoholic men in treatment at a rural midwestern Department of Veterans Affairs medical center. Multiple regression analyses found that reduced social support significantly predicted depressio

This 15-year longitudinal study examined the association between family caregiving and cognitive function among middle-aged and older adults in South Korea, focusing on gender differences and the moderating role of social support. Using data from 6,481 participants in the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (2006-2020), cognitive function was assessed with the Korean Mini-Mental State Examination (K-MMSE). Family caregiving experience was defined as reporting caregiving in at least two survey waves between 2006 and 2020. Repeated caregiving exposure was associated with lower cognitive performan

Social support is the gratification of basic social needs (affection, belonging, esteem or approval, security, identity) through interaction with others. Social support at school allows students to perceive themselves as competent during learning and to enjoy school in general. Little is known about social support at school for students with sensory disabilities. This review aims to synthesize findings from studies examining social support at school for students with hearing and visual impairments. A search of computerized databases was supplemented by a manual search of the bibliographies of

BACKGROUND: Social Support has been found to contribute to lower mental illness burden, higher treatment adherence, enhanced social functioning, and better quality of life. Individuals with schizophrenia report lower social support compared to non-clinical populations, yet the factors contributing to this discrepancy are not fully clear. Specifically, the person-related variables that may enhance or hinder SS in people with schizophrenia are unknown. Evidence from affective neuroscience research has implicated emotion awareness and regulation as key predictors of social functioning, a correlat

Social media use among dermatology patients is ubiquitous, with estimates of over 80% of patients using social media to learn about their dermatologic conditions. Vitiligo is an autoimmune disease leading to depigmentation with an estimated prevalence of 0.5%–2% globally. Vitiligo has been implicated in a decreased quality of life (QoL), particularly in females, individuals with darker complexions, and those from South Asian cultures.

Although previous studies showed that children are the primary source of old-age support in China, much less is known about the availability and sources of social support among childless elders. Also, little research has explored how older adults' social support transitions over time by childless status. Using the 2005 and 2011 Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (N = 14,575), this study examined the transition of living arrangement and sources of social support by childless status among adults aged 65 and older. A series of multinomial logistic and linear regression models were used

Sickle cell disease (SCD) can cause both physical and psychological complications, such as severe pain and depression. These effects often necessitate social and caregiving support. Few studies have assessed support networks within the adult SCD population. Here, we describe the support networks of adults with SCD and identify who in these networks (1) provides emotional support, (2) is dependable during crisis situations, including social and financial adversities, and (3) provides assistance in health crises. Forty-nine adults with SCD completed surveys and social network assessments through

BACKGROUND: Social support may be a protective factor for the mental health of public safety personnel (PSP), who are frequently exposed to potentially psychologically traumatic events and report substantial post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) symptoms. Research examining perceived social support and its association with PTSD and MDD in different PSP categories (e.g. firefighters, paramedics) is limited.
AIMS: To examine differences in perceived social support across PSP and determine whether perceived social support is associated with differences in rate
