BACKGROUND: Theory-of-mind (ToM) is the ability to accurately infer others' thoughts and feelings. In generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), cognitive and emotion regulation theories allude to the plausibility that ToM is conditional on the degree of individuals' state worry, a hallmark symptom. GAD and state worry may interact to predict ToM constructs. However, no experiments have directly tested such interactional hypotheses, and used ToM as a framework to advance understanding of social cognition in GAD. This study therefore aimed to address this gap.
METHODS: 171 participants (69 GAD, 102 C

BACKGROUND: The United Nations Convention against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs 1988 ("1988 Convention") expresses a strong normative preference for criminalising drug possession. Historically, the United Nations offices responsible for overseeing the treaties have held that decriminalisation of drug possession is contrary to the treaties. Leading up to and during UNGASS 2016, however, rather than emphasise criminalisation, the high-ranking officials from the drug control offices emphasised the treaties' allowance of alternatives to punishment for drug possession offences.

BACKGROUND: Employment of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in South Africa's public sector remains persistently low despite progressive legislative frameworks. This reflects enduring structural, organisational and attitudinal barriers that limit meaningful inclusion, particularly at a provincial level. Compliance-driven approaches have proven insufficient in addressing the organisational dynamics shaping inclusion. This study is grounded in the social model of disability and applies social exchange theory (SET) to examine how perceptions of costs, benefits and reciprocity influence employment

OBJECTIVE: Social connectedness is a modifiable lifestyle factor that delays age-related cognitive decline. Using cross-sectional, longitudinal, and experimental approaches, we examined whether theory of mind-inferring what others think or feel-is a potential mechanism underlying this relationship.
METHODS: In Study 1, 305 community-dwelling older adults participating in two different, but related, studies completed comprehensive measures of general cognition, theory of mind, and personal social networks. We examined whether theory of mind mediated the relationship between older adults' socia

Instrumental Stakeholder Theory has begun to suffer from what might be termed "mission drift." Despite its initial success in creating a foothold for ethics in managerial decision-making, the efficiency arguments which now dominate this research stream have become counterproductive to the original goal of connecting ethics and capitalism. We argue in this paper that the way forward is by re-centering contingency, conversation, and inefficiency in stakeholder theory. To start this process, there needs to be a reckoning of some unintended impacts of the success of the instrumental stream of stak

BACKGROUND: This study aims to identify covariates of suicidal ideation (SI) in a large sample of individuals diagnosed with social anxiety disorder (SAD).
METHODS: In a cross-sectional design, 305 individuals (38.4 ± 14.1 years, 59% female) with SAD were assessed by the Social Phobia Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory, Adverse Childhood Experience Questionnaire, State Trait Anger Expression Inventory, Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation and the Interpersonal Needs Questionnaire.
RESULTS: SAD individuals with SI (n = 142, 46.6%) reported higher SAD and depression symptoms, more adverse childh

OBJECTIVE: To conduct a meta-analysis of Theory of Mind studies exclusively in euthymic patients with bipolar disorder.
METHOD: After the exclusion of studies evaluating symptomatic patients during acute episodes, we performed a meta-analysis including a total of 30 studies, comparing 1294 euthymic bipolar disorder patients and 1116 healthy controls.
RESULTS: Patients with bipolar disorder presented a significant impairment in Theory of Mind performance when compared to controls (Hedge's g = -0.589, 95% confidence interval: -0.764 to -0.414, Z = -6.594, p < 0.001). When compared to controls,

HIV stigma and fears surrounding the disease pose a challenge for public health interventions, particularly those that target pregnant women. In order to reduce stigma and improve the lives of vulnerable populations, researchers have recognized a need to integrate different types of support at various levels. To better inform HIV interventions, the current study draws on social-ecological and evolutionary theories of reproduction to predict stigma and fear of contracting HIV among pregnant women in South India. The aims of this study were twofold: compare the social-ecological model to a modif

BACKGROUND: The findings of the few studies that have to date investigated the way in which individuals with Anorexia Nervosa (AN) navigate their social environment are somewhat contradictory. We undertook this study to shed new light on the social-cognitive profile of patients with AN, analysing Theory of Mind and emotional functioning. Starting from previous evidence on the role of the amygdala in the neurobiology of AN and in the social cognition, we hypothesise preserved Theory of Mind and impaired emotional functioning in patients with AN.
METHODOLOGY: Thirty women diagnosed with AN and

Despite the fact that serial murder has existed for centuries, it has been given little academic attention in the social science literature. Existing studies have primarily examined the motivational factors involved in the commission of serial murder. However, research examining the childhood and adolescent backgrounds of serial murderers is scant. Based on three case studies of serial murderers, this study contributes to the existing literature by exploring the possible link between childhood and/or adolescent fire setting and adult serial murder by applying social learning theory.

BACKGROUND: Perceived stigma is a complex societal phenomenon that is harboured especially by female sex workers because of the interplay of a myriad of factors. As such, a precise measure of the contribution of different social practices and characteristics is necessary for both understanding and intervening in matters related to perceived stigma. We developed a Perceived Stigma Index that measures the factors that greatly contribute to the stigma among sex workers in Kenya, and thereby inform a framework for future interventions.
METHODS: Social Practice Theory was adopted in the developmen

This article tracks the growth of medical anthropology in the United States in the decades since the 1970s, as it has intersected the expansion of feminist activism and scholarship. I argue that feminist attention to embodied inequalities quickly focused on reproduction as a site of investigation and intervention. Medical anthropology has benefited from feminist concern with stratified reproduction, especially its interrogation of nonnormative and stigmatized fertility and childbearing. When reproduction becomes problematic, it provides a lens through which cultural norms, struggles, and trans

OBJECTIVE: There is mixed evidence about whether omega-3 fatty acids reduce depressive symptoms. We previously reported that 4 months of omega-3 supplementation reduced inflammatory responsivity to a lab-based social stressor. In another study, we showed that those with exaggerated inflammatory responsivity to a social stressor had the greatest depressive symptom increases over time, especially if they experienced frequent social stress. Here we tested whether omega-3 supplementation reduced subthreshold depressive symptoms among those who experienced frequent social stress.

Most adolescents experience cyberhate primarily as bystanders. Understanding their behavior, particularly their defending behaviors, is crucial to mitigate the phenomenon and its negative effects. While prior studies have explored factors influencing these responses, further research is needed to understand how these factors interact within robust theoretical frameworks. To address this gap, this study examined adolescents' defending behaviors to cyberhate through three psychological theories: (1) the Theory of Normative Social Behavior (TNSB; social norms); (2) Social Learning Theory (SLT; so

Behavioural norms vary across cultures, and they vary in distinct ways for different behaviours. We show that this variation is not random but highly predictable. We introduce the Moral Flavours Model, a theory proposing that norms emerge from three factors: how much moral concern a behaviour evokes overall, its 'moral flavour' (the type of concern it evokes), and societies' 'moral tastes' (their sensitivity to different types of concern). We demonstrate that this simple framework predicts 76% of the variance in moral norms across 19 morally contentious behaviours in 42 societies, and 88% of t

BACKGROUND: Physical activity (PA) is lower in persons with multiple sclerosis (MS) than the general population, partly explained by social-cognitive theory (SCT) variables. To date, little is known about PA and SCT constructs among Hispanics adults with MS, a group that experiences notable health disparities. We compared PA and SCT variables between Hispanic and non-Hispanic adults with MS and examined associations among these variables within each group.
METHODS: Hispanic (n = 35; mean age=41.5 ± 12.5 years) and non-Hispanic (n = 35; mean age=41.7 ± 12.1 years) adults with MS completed onli

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition is prevalent among cancer patients, and oral nutritional supplements (ONS) are an important intervention. However, poor adherence to ONS negatively impacts therapeutic outcomes. Previous studies have predominantly employed quantitative methods to investigate factors influencing adherence, with a limited in-depth understanding of patients' subjective experiences and multidimensional mechanisms.
METHODS: This study adopted a descriptive qualitative design based on the social cognitive theory (SCT) framework. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 cancer patie

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a common and impairing condition that emerges in early adolescence, confers significant interpersonal disability and often persists into adulthood. Prevailing interventions for socially anxious youth are largely based on cognitive-behavioral models originally developed in adult samples, but produce only modest rates of remission in adolescents. The purposes of this review are to examine plausible explanations for these modest rates of treatment response and to critically evaluate the relevance of developmental mechanisms related to reward circuitry function. Relying on a national stratified random sample of Indigenous peoples aged 19 years old and above in Canada, this study investigates the correlates of illicit drug use among Indigenous peoples, paying special attention to the association between social support measures and illegal drug use. Results from multivariate logistical regression show that measures of social support, such as residential mobility, strength of ties within communities, and lack of timely counseling, are statistically significant correlates of illicit drug use. Those identifying as Christian are significantly less likely to

We propose a Green Mind Theory (GMT) to link the human mind with the brain and body, and connect the body into natural and social environments. The processes are reciprocal: environments shape bodies, brains, and minds; minds change body behaviours that shape the external environment. GMT offers routes to improved individual well-being whilst building towards greener economies. It builds upon research on green exercise and nature-based therapies, and draws on understanding derived from neuroscience and brain plasticity, spiritual and wisdom traditions, the lifeways of original cultures, and ma
