Using the Social Vulnerability Index to Analyze Statewide Health Disparities in Cholecystectomy.

INTRODUCTION: Addressing the effects of social determinants of health in surgery has become a national priority. We evaluated the utility of the Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) in determining the likelihood of receiving cholecystectomy for cholecystitis in Texas. METHODS: A retrospective study of adults with cholecystitis in the Texas Hospital Inpatient Discharge Public Use Data File and Texas Outpatient Surgical and Radiological Procedure Data Public Use Data File from 2016 to 2019. Patients were stratified into SVI quartiles, with the lowest quartile as low vulnerability, the middle two as

Spatial Accessibility and Uptake of Pediatric COVID-19 Vaccinations by Social Vulnerability.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Geographic accessibility predicts pediatric preventive care utilization, including vaccine uptake. However, spatial inequities in the pediatric coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination rollout remain underexplored. We assessed the spatial accessibility of vaccination sites and analyzed predictors of vaccine uptake. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study of pediatric COVID-19 vaccinations from the US Vaccine Tracking System as of July 29, 2022, we described spatial accessibility by geocoding vaccination sites, measuring travel times from each Census tract popu

Effect of Social Vulnerability on Cocaine-Related Mortality Rates in U.S. Counties.

Cocaine-related mortality rates have risen sharply since 2013 and social vulnerability is a crucial indicator for drug-related mortality rates. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between social vulnerability and cocaine-related mortality rates in U.S. counties. The Data were collected from the CDC WONDER, CDC's Social Vulnerability Index (CDC's SVI), and American Community Survey (ACS). The Data were analyzed by spatial autoregression models. According to present results, first, counties with social vulnerability (socioeconomic) were positively related to

Impact of social vulnerability index on patients with alcohol-related liver disease.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol related liver disease (ALD) affects diverse communities with individual and social characteristics that can impact outcomes. The social vulnerability index (SVI) assigns a score between 0 and 1, where higher scores represent an increased risk of social vulnerability. We sought to assess the impact of SVI on outcomes of patients hospitalized with ALD with access to social support services. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Hospitalizations for ALD at our institution between March and August 2019 were reviewed. All patients were assigned an SVI score based on their residential census

Alcoholic cardiomyopathy mortality and social vulnerability index: A nationwide cross-sectional analysis.

BACKGROUND: Social vulnerability index (SVI) plays a pivotal role in the outcomes of cardiovascular diseases and prevalence of alcohol use. We evaluated the impact of the SVI on alcoholic cardiomyopathy (ACM) mortality. METHODS: Mortality data from 1999 to 2020 and the SVI were obtained from CDC databases. Demographics such as age, sex, race/ethnicity, and geographic residence were obtained from death certificates. The SVI was divided into quartiles, with the fourth quartile (Q4) representing the highest vulnerability. Age-adjusted mortality rates across SVI quartiles were compared, and exces

Social Vulnerability and Premature Cardiovascular Mortality Among US Counties, 2014 to 2018.

BACKGROUND: Substantial differences exist between United States counties with regards to premature (<65 years of age) cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality. Whether underlying social vulnerabilities of counties influence premature CVD mortality is uncertain. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study (2014-2018), we linked county-level CDC/ATSDR SVI (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry Social Vulnerability Index) data with county-level CDC WONDER (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wide-Ranging Online Data for Epidemiological Resear

Social stability and HIV risk behavior: evaluating the role of accumulated vulnerability.

This study evaluated a cumulative and syndromic relationship among commonly co-occurring vulnerabilites (homelessness, incarceration, low-income, residential transition) in association with HIV-related risk behaviors among 635 low-income women in Baltimore. Analysis included descriptive statistics, logistic regression, latent class analysis and latent class regression. Both methods of assessing multidimensional instability showed significant associations with risk indicators. Risk of multiple partners, sex exchange, and drug use decreased significantly with each additional domain. Higher stabi

Association between walkability and diverse health metrics: moderating role of social vulnerability.

Little research has considered associations between walkability and multiple health outcomes and the moderating effect of social determinants of health. This study examined relationships between walkability and diverse health issues (depression, poor mental health, poor physical health, mobility disability, obesity) and no leisure-time physical activity and whether these relationships were moderated by social vulnerability. Then, we assessed whether these moderated effects varied between urbanicity. For 1089 census tracts in South Carolina, we compiled EPA National Walkability Index, 6 health

Predicting Private Equity Acquisition of Urology Practices by the Social Vulnerability Index.

OBJECTIVE: To understand patterns in private equity (PE) acquisition of urology practices based on the Social Vulnerability Index (SVI), a composite, area-level measurement reflecting the following themes: socioeconomic status, household characteristics, racial & ethnic minority status, and housing & transportation type. METHODS: We identified PE-owned urology practices by cross-referencing multiple sources. We linked the SVI for census tracts with and surrounding a PE practice (census places). We used multilevel, multivariable logistic regression to predict the probability of PE acquisition

Neighborhood Characteristics, Ambulation Ability, and Social Vulnerability of Individuals with Spina Bifida.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the characteristics of neighborhoods where people with Spina Bifida (SB) live, driving distances, and the relationship of those factors to ambulatory ability. DESIGN: Data from patients attending an adult and pediatric SB clinic in the National Spina Bifida Patient Registry were matched to the 2022 CDC/ATSDR Social Vulnerability Index using patient zip codes. A multinomial logistic regression was used to predict ambulation ability, and Spearman's Rho correlations were used to assess the relationship between driving distance to clinic, nearest physical therapist

Social vulnerability index enhances FRAX prediction of hip fractures in fall patients.

The Fracture Risk Assessment Tool (FRAX), widely used for predicting the 10-year likelihood of hip fractures, does not incorporate factors like prior falls and sociodemographic characteristics, notably the Social Vulnerability Index (SVI). Recognizing these limitations, we aim to evaluate the predictive accuracy of FRAX by integrating fall frequency, fall energy, and SVI into the model for assessing the risk of fall-induced hip fractures. A retrospective case-control study was conducted, and patients aged ≥ 40 years with a documented diagnosis of a fall-induced hip fracture were age-matched wi

Social Media Recruitment as a Potential Trigger for Vulnerability: Multistakeholder Interview Study.

BACKGROUND: More clinical studies use social media to increase recruitment accrual. However, empirical analyses focusing on the ethical aspects pertinent when targeting patients with vulnerable characteristics are lacking. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore expert and patient perspectives on vulnerability in the context of social media recruitment and seeks to explore how social media can reduce or amplify vulnerabilities. METHODS: As part of an international consortium that tests a therapeutic vaccine against hepatitis B (TherVacB), we conducted 30 qualitative interviews with multidiscip

Preterm birth among pregnant women living in areas with high social vulnerability.

BACKGROUND: Communities and individuals widely vary in their resources and ability to respond to external stressors and insults. To identify vulnerable communities, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention developed the Social Vulnerability Index, an integrated tool to assess community resources and preparedness; it is based on 15 factors and includes individual scores in the following 4 themes: socioeconomic status (theme 1), household composition and disability (theme 2), minority status and language (theme 3), and housing type and transportation (theme 4) and an overall composite scor

Gaining insight into adolescent vulnerability for social anxiety from developmental cognitive neuroscience.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) markedly impairs daily functioning. For adolescents, SAD can constrain typical development precisely when social experiences broaden, peers' opinions are highly salient, and social approval is actively sought. Individuals with extreme, impairing social anxiety fear evaluation from others, avoid social interactions, and interpret ambiguous social cues as threatening. Yet some degree of social anxiety can be normative and non-impairing. Furthermore, a temperament of behavioral inhibition increases risk for SAD for some, but not all adolescents with this temperament.

Depression and biological aging: Unexpected vulnerability in relatively advantaged social risk profile group.

BACKGROUND: Depression has significantly associated with biological aging. Although lower social status is generally linked to increased vulnerability to aging, the biological impact of depression may differ according to social status, possibly due to variations in stress perception and structural position. However, it remains unclear how depression is related to biological age acceleration across different social risk profile (SRP). METHODS: We analyzed 18,787 participants from NHANES 2005-2020. PhenoAgeAccel was used as a validated biomarker of biological aging. Depression was defined as PH

Off-Road Vehicle Trauma in Southern California: Association With the Social Vulnerability Index.

BackgroundOff-road vehicles' (ORVs) inherently unstable design lends to higher injury rates compared to motorcycles. California has ranked among the top five states for ORV-related injuries and deaths for the past decade. Because ORVs are frequently used in rural areas with greater social vulnerability, concerns exist that injuries disproportionately affect disadvantaged populations. This study evaluates whether ORV injury rates and severity are associated with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) in Southern California.MethodsWe performed a retrosp

Association Between Social Vulnerability and Postoperative Complications and Readmission Among Cardiovascular Surgery Patients.

Despite the well-established importance of health-related social needs in shaping patient outcomes, gaps remain in the literature examining these relationships at the individual level among patients undergoing cardiac surgery. This retrospective study used data from the 2016-2018 Nationwide Readmission Database to evaluate postoperative complications and readmissions in patients undergoing cardiac surgery (coronary artery bypass grafting, aortic surgery, valve surgery, or a combination) using individual-level social vulnerability clinically acknowledged using ICD-10 Z-codes.
