BACKGROUND: Evidence for an effect of work stressors on common mental disorders (CMD) has increased over the past decade. However, studies have not considered whether the effects of work stressors on CMD remain after taking co-occurring non-work stressors into account.
METHOD: Data were from the 2007 Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey, a national population survey of participants 6 years living in private households in England. This paper analyses data from employed working age participants (N=3383: 1804 males; 1579 females). ICD-10 diagnoses for depressive episode, generalized anxiety disord

Data are presented on the use of social resources to reduce the negative effects of perceived job stress on the health of 26 psychiatric technicians who cared for severely and profoundly retarded residents of a state institution. Data were collected by participant observation, semistructured interviews, and the self-administered Cornell Medical Index. Sources of job stress were found to stem not from problems associated with the care of the retarded but rather from staff members' inability to control other critical aspects of their work. Staff with supportive work-based social networks reporte

BACKGROUND: The centenary of Frantz Fanon’s birth in 2025 sparked renewed attention to his work. In recent years, his reception has shifted noticeably: from Fanon as a political activist to Fanon as a psychiatrist.
AIM: To offer a concise exploration of the historical significance and contemporary relevance of Fanon’s psychiatric writings, and to help make this body of work more accessible to a Dutch-speaking readership.
METHOD: A reflective discussion based on a literature review of both the primary and recent secondary literature, including a recent narrative literature review

UNLABELLED: Policy Points The spillover effects of jail and prison incarceration extend to acute psychiatric emergencies in Black communities. State-level drug reform policies and policies that reduce labor market and housing discrimination for former inmates may have salutary mental health benefits for the broader community.
CONTEXT: The justice system incarcerates nearly 2.3 million individuals in the United States. Black Americans comprise 40% of those incarcerated despite representing less than 15% of the population. Theoretical work posits that mass incarceration can erode social capital

A cohort of 199 individuals with mental retardation referred for behavioral and psychiatric crisis intervention services was studied to determine attributes differentiating physically aggressive behavior from other behavioral problems. Individuals with aggressive and nonaggressive behavior had similar neurological histories and current medical status and similar levels of seizure disorders and CNS abnormalities. Aggressive individuals more often had psychiatric diagnoses of organic brain syndrome, but frequencies of this diagnosis in each group were small. Current aggression was predicted by g

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this qualitative study was to evaluate the therapeutic role of canine-assisted intervention (CAI) as an adjunct to multimodal treatment in inpatient psychiatry, develop an implementation framework for an animal-assisted therapy program, and examine staff perceptions of its benefits as a complementary modality in psychiatric care.
METHODS: The authors conducted a 20-minute semistructured interview with 17 psychiatric nursing staff members who were current employees in an adult inpatient psychiatric unit and who had worked with pet therapy services over the past 4 years.

BACKGROUND: While single psychosocial factors have been associated with cardiovascular outcomes, it is still unclear how they cluster. Therefore, we examined whether latent multidimensional psychosocial risk profiles could be identified in the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) psychosocial screening interview. Additionally we examined whether these profiles were associated with specific sociodemographic, clinical, and psychosocial characteristics.
METHOD: 681 coronary artery disease patients (age=64.9±10.6; 80% men) completed the ESC interview, comprising 15 items on 7 predefined component

BACKGROUND: Functional impairment scales are increasingly used to evaluate subjects with a variety of mental disorders.
METHODS: We evaluated the work, social, and family disabilities of 228 subjects with 6 common anxiety and depressive disorders, as assessed by the Sheehan Disability Scale (major depression, panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social phobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and mixed anxiety and depression).
RESULTS: Subjects in the 6 diagnostic groups had significantly higher work, social, and family disability scores than control subjects, with the exception of th

BACKGROUND: Childhood adversity is robustly associated with mental ill-health. Yet questions remain about how different ways of conceptualising adversity relate to psychiatric diagnoses and service activity. This research aims to examine associations between typological and cumulative conceptualisations of adversity, and psychiatric diagnosis and service activity.
METHODS: We analysed risk assessment data from 21,072 young people attending mental health services in South London. These assessments include items relating to maltreatment, parental mental health difficulties, substance misuse, se

CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: Since their creation in 2005 in France, mobile mental health outreach teams (EMPP) have been working to improve the health of the homeless who, for 30 to 50% of them, present severe mental disorders. Their missions are defined by ministerial circular's specifications. Few studies have been undertaken in France to analyze the practices of these teams' professionals, nor the characteristics of the populations with whom they are involved. The EMPP described in this paper had in 2010 a greater staff than other French EMPPs. It has 15 full-time staff, including four doctors (

This study tested the hypothesis that the Last-Weiss (Last & Weiss, 1976) Rorschach Ego-Strength Scale would predict outcome among a representative sample of first-lifetime psychiatric admissions. One hundred seventeen patients were assessed with structured symptom, psychiatric history, and social data interviews at hospital admission, and 2-year follow-up. Outcome measures included a multidimensional variable involving rehospitalization time, social and work functioning, and recent symptom level and symptom measures. Unexpectedly, the Last-Weiss Sum E variable correlated significantly with ne

INTRODUCTION: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are well-established risk factors for mental disorders, yet their impact within vulnerable occupational groups remains insufficiently understood. Women engaged in sex work and social care are disproportionately exposed to violence and emotional stressors, potentially compounding the effects of early-life adversity.
METHODS: We conducted a mixed-methods study in Berlin, Germany, including 560 women (403 engaged in sex work, 157 in social care). Childhood adversity was assessed using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ-SF), and current psyc

According to Swedish legislation (LVM) compulsory treatment shall be decided on if someone, due to ongoing abuse of alcohol, drugs or volatile solvents, is in need of care to overcome abuse and if a voluntary intervention is not possible. Very little research has been conducted in Sweden on this particular legislation with regard to the clients' experiences of entire process from assessment to aftercare. We interviewed 74 subjects who were being assessed prior to the court's decision on involuntary care (n=39), or with previous experience of assessment and involuntary care (n=35). The assessme

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to synthesize recent advances in the psychiatric and behavioral manifestations of Williams syndrome, a rare genetic syndrome. Recent advances have focused on more deeply characterizing the social phenotype and developing social skill interventions, improving the assessment and treatment of anxiety, and exploring eating behaviors.
RECENT FINDINGS: The social cognitive phenotype in Williams syndrome, which consists of both high social drive and social cognition deficits, is present cross-culturally and may be related to reduced eye gaze. Social s

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a highly distressing chronic psychiatric disorder characterized by persistent fear of social situations in anticipation of being judged negatively by others. As shyness mimics some of the symptoms of SAD, people suffering from this debilitating disease are often underdiagnosed. It can have a devastating impact on all areas of life including academic performance, social growth, relationship status, and work performance. In recent years, research on anxiety and related disorders has proliferated due to the increased use of cognitive-behavioral models. The underst

The phenomenon of homeless people is eliciting a devastating social impact with an estimated prevalence in the USA and in Europe between 5.6% and 13.9%. These persons have a poor quality of life, a limited or no social life. They are often unemployed or work only occasionally. They are at risk for problems with the law and often suffering from addiction to other drugs, psychiatric and other medical diseases. Alcohol is often not the cause of their social status, but only the result of other discomforts thus contributing to their bio-psycho-social degradation. In 2009 the US Department of Housi

BACKGROUND: Psychosocial factors are associated with the etiology and prognosis of coronary heart disease (CHD) in White populations; however, previous studies have not examined the distribution of psychosocial factors in ethnic groups with coronary rates higher (South Asian) and lower (Afro-Caribbean) than those of Whites.
STUDY OBJECTIVE: To determine whether ethnic differences in psychosocial risk factors parallel those in CHD mortality.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey.
SETTING: 20 civil service departments in London.
PARTICIPANTS: 8973 White, 577 South Asian, and 360 Afro-Caribbean offi

This paper describes the application of a transitional employment program (TEP) for psychiatric patients in Hong Kong. The TEP and its values in psychiatric rehabilitation are introduced. The differences between TEP and Supported Employment (SE) were also highlighted. A TEP for psychiatric patients in an acute general hospital is outlined. Interviews of employer and trainees showed that, apart from increasing income, qualitative changes in the trainees were observed such as increased self-confidence, improved assertive and social skills, and increased work tolerance. One of the enduring clinical issues in the assessment of plaintiffs in personal injury and workers' compensation claims, as well as applicants for social security and disablement benefits, is that of the evaluation of impairment and work incapacity. Many writers on this topic confuse the concepts of impairment and disability, and similar confusion is reflected in a number of the rating methods that purport to evaluate impairment but in reality assess disability. In Australia there are 20 distinct statutory schemes for workers' compensation, motor accident compensation, and social security and
