Lifestyle and sociodemographic risk factors for gastroschisis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Gastroschisis is strongly associated with young maternal age. This association suggests the need for further investigations on non-genetic risk factors. Identifying these risk factors is a public health priority in order to develop prevention strategies aimed at reducing the prevalence and health consequences in offspring. OBJECTIVE: To systematically assess and quantitatively synthesise the available epidemiological studies to evaluate the association between non-genetic risk factors and gastroschisis. METHODS: Literature from PubMed, EMBASE and Scopus was searched for the perio

Sociodemographic factors and social determinants associated with toxicology confirmed polysubstance opioid-related deaths.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: While prescribed and illicit opioid use are primary drivers of the national surges in overdose deaths, opioid overdose deaths in which stimulants are also present are increasing in the U.S. We determined the social determinants and sociodemographic factors associated with opioid-only versus polysubstance opioid overdose deaths in Massachusetts. Particular attention was focused on the role of stimulants in opioid overdose deaths. METHODS: We analyzed all opioid-related overdose deaths from 2014 to 2015 in an individually-linked population database in Massachusetts. We used

Association of Sociodemographic Factors and the Rate of Vagotomy Performed in Patients With Gastroduodenal Ulcers.

INTRODUCTION: Operative management of gastroduodenal ulcers (GDUs) and vagotomy are increasingly rare due to success of medical therapy. Given sociodemographic factors could impact perception of medical therapy adherence and operative management, we sought to investigate the influence of sociodemographic factors on likelihood of vagotomy for patients with GDUs. METHODS: The 2012-2017 Nationwide Inpatient Sample was queried for adults admitted with GDUs and gastric or duodenal operations. To assess sociodemographic associations, univariable and multivariable comparisons were made between opera

Sociodemographic and lifestyle risk factors for incident dementia and cognitive decline in the HYVET.

INTRODUCTION: previous studies have suggested that smoking, living alone and having a high body mass index may increase risk of developing dementia whereas a normal body mass index, having received education and moderate alcohol consumption may decrease risk. Dementia risk also increases with age and is thought to be higher in hypertensives. METHOD: we used data collected in the Hypertension in the Very Elderly Trial (HYVET), and cognitive function was assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) at baseline and annually. Participants with a fall in MMSE to <24 or with a fall of 3

Sociodemographic and clinical factors associated with jail entry after a mental health crisis.

Individuals who experience mental health crises frequently find themselves in contact with the criminal legal system. Strengthening the capacity of mental health crisis services to engage with those at high risk for incarceration is a priority both for those who experience crises and those responsible for service delivery. This retrospective analysis included 10,269 mental health crisis episodes among 6861 individuals from 2021 to 2022 in San Francisco, California, USA. We examined the sociodemographic and episode-level characteristics most associated with incarceration in the county's jail wi

Examining Sociodemographic Factors Related to Autism Screening Rates of Children in Early Intervention.

PURPOSE: Routine developmental screening is essential for early identification of autism. Reliable autism screening is even more valuable for individuals from minoritized groups who are often under-detected and receive later diagnoses. Despite this importance, disparities in access to screening and accurate identification persist. Given these disparities, we were interested in examining group differences in autism screening rates at 18 and 24 months of age among children referred to Georgia's Part C Babies Can't Wait (BCW) program between 2018 and 2022. METHOD: Among a sample of 52,282 infant

Sociodemographic characteristics on behavioural risk factors of noncommunicable diseases in adolescents in Luxembourg.

BACKGROUND: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) accounted for 89% of deaths in Luxembourg in 2019, aligning with Europe's figures but exceeding the global average of 74%. Behaviours play a critical role in NCD management, with unhealthy lifestyles-like poor diets, physical inactivity, tobacco use, and alcohol consumption-posing significant risks, especially when combined. The present study aims to explore sociodemographic characteristics of adolescents presenting behavioural risks for NCDs in Luxembourg. METHODS: A representative sample of 8117 adolescents (11-to-18-years-old) took part in the 2
