Ionic requirements of proximal tubular sodium transport. I. Bicarbonate and chloride.

Simultaneous perfusion of peritubular capillaries and proximal convoluted tubules was used to study the effect of varying transepithelial ionic gradients on ionic fluxes. Results show that net sodium influx and volume flux was one-third of normal when bicarbonate was absent, no chloride gradient existed, and glucose and amino acids were absent. Addition of bicarbonate to the luminal fluid did not restore the flux to normal, but peritubular bicarbonate did restore it. A chloride gradient imposed when no bicarbonate was present could only increase the fluxes slightly, but his flux was significan

Stability of Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride, Lorazepam, and Dexamethasone Sodium Phosphate in 0.9% Sodium Chloride Stored in Polypropylene Syringes.

Chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting is problematic for many patients undergoing chemotherapy. Multiple-drug treatments have been developed to mitigate chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting. A patient-controlled infusion of diphenhydramine hydrochloride, lorazepam, and dexamethasone sodium phosphate has been studied in patients who are refractory to first-line therapy. Unfortunately, the physical and chemical compatibility of this three-drug combination is not available in the published literature. Chemical compatibility was evaluated using high-performance liquid chromatography with ul

Sodium lactate and hypertonic sodium chloride induce equivalent panic incidence, panic symptoms, and hypernatremia in panic disorder.

BACKGROUND: Although experimental induction of panic by infusion of 0.5 mol/L sodium lactate in persons with panic disorder was described three decades ago, the mechanism underlying this observation remains unclear. Here we asked if the rapid administration of the large sodium load contained in the 0.5-mol/L sodium lactate infusion might be involved in panic induction. METHODS: We compared in panic disorder and healthy subjects behavioral, electrolyte, endocrine, and acid-base responses to three double-blind randomly ordered equal volume 20-min infusions: 0.5 mol/L sodium lactate, hypertonic

[Application of a paste composed of sodium bicarbonate, sodium chloride and hydrogen peroxide in treating of active periodontal pockets].

Close relationship existing between dentobacterial plaque and chronic inflammatory periodontal disease, as well as effectiveness of conservative treatments used to eliminate chronic gingivitis, is wordly known. However, several years ago, chronic destructive periodontal disease was only solved by surgical techniques, most of them bloody and of doubtful solution for some periodontal problems; for such reasons, a study was carried out in order to learn about the role played by a medicament formed with sodium bicarbonate, sodium chloride and hydrogen peroxide, deeply applied as a paste into activ

Residual congestion and urinary sodium and chloride trajectories in acute heart failure.

Residual congestion remains frequent after initial treatment for acute heart failure (AHF), and its presence may not be adequately identified using individual clinical or biochemical markers. We investigated residual congestion using a multimodal approach and examined its relationship with changes in urinary sodium and chloride during the first 72 h of hospitalization. We prospectively included consecutive patients hospitalized for AHF who underwent congestion assessment at admission and 72 h. Clinical evaluation, NT-proBNP, and venous Doppler ultrasound (VExUS) were integrated to assess conge

Stability of caffeine citrate intravenous dilutions in sodium chloride and glucose solutions.

OBJECTIVES: Caffeine citrate, a methylxanthine derivative, is commonly used in the management of apnoea of prematurity. In clinical settings, particularly in neonatal intensive care units, various dilutions of caffeine citrate in intravenous fluids are required to ensure precise and individualised dosing for extremely low birth weight infants. This study aimed to assess the stability of caffeine citrate solutions at concentrations of 1 mg/mL and 12.5 mg/mL in 0.9% w/v sodium chloride and 5% w/v glucose, stored at room temperature and under refrigeration up to 48 hours. METHODS: Caffeine citra

A Meta-Analysis on Quantitative Sodium, Potassium and Chloride Metabolism in Horses and Ponies.

The goal of this meta-analysis was to (i) identify any potential differences in the apparent and true digestibility, renal excretion, and retention between ponies and horses and (ii) examine the impact of work on these parameters. Additionally, the study aimed to (iii) evaluate the effects of water deficiency. This meta-analysis used data from 33 studies and plotted them in diagrams similar to the Lucas test against mineral intake. Three studies involved ponies that were later diagnosed with pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID). These were compared with other data to identify quantitat

Estimation of sodium and chloride storage in critically ill patients: a balance study.

BACKGROUND: Nonosmotic sodium storage has been reported in animals, healthy individuals and patients with hypertension, hyperaldosteronism and end-stage kidney disease. Sodium storage has not been studied in ICU patients, who frequently receive large amounts of sodium chloride-containing fluids. The objective of our study was to estimate sodium that cannot be accounted for by balance studies in critically ill patients. Chloride was also studied. We used multiple scenarios and assumptions for estimating sodium and chloride balances. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed patients admitted to the

Identification of the Causes for Chronic Hypokalemia: Importance of Urinary Sodium and Chloride Excretion.

BACKGROUND: Uncovering the correct diagnosis of chronic hypokalemia with potassium (K+) wasting from the kidneys or gut can be fraught with challenges. We identified clinical and laboratory parameters helpful for differentiating the causes of chronic hypokalemia. METHODS: Normotensive patients referred to our tertiary academic medical center for the evaluation of chronic hypokalemia were prospectively enrolled over 5 years. Clinical features, laboratory examinations-including blood and spot urine electrolytes, acid-base status, biochemistries, and hormones-as well as genetic analysis, were de

Genetic and biological effects of sodium-chloride cotransporter (SLC12A3) in diabetic nephropathy.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Solute carrier family 12 member 3 (SLC12A3) encodes a sodium/chloride transporter in kidneys. Previous reports suggest that Arg913Gln polymorphism in this gene is associated with diabetic nephropathy (DN), but the data appear to be inconsistent. Up to now, there is no biological evidence concerning the effects of SLC12A3 in DN. In this study, we aim to evaluate the genetic effects of the SLC12A3 gene and its Arg913Gln polymorphism with genetic and functional analyses. METHODS: We genotyped SLC12A3 genetic polymorphisms including Arg913Gln in 784 non-diabetes controls and 633

Effect of hibernation on sodium and chloride ion transport in isolated frog skin.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of hibernation on electrophysiological parameters of isolated frog skin under control incubation (Ringer solution) and after inhibition of Na+ and CI- transepithelial transport by application of amiloride and bumetanide. The transepithelial electrical potential difference (PD in mV) was measured before and after mechanical stimulation of isolated frog skin. The tissues were mounted in a modified Ussing chamber. The results revealed a reduced PD of frog skin during hibernation. In February, as compared with November, PD of frog skin incubated in R

Sodium chloride transport of normal and dietary enlarged rat cecum in vitro.

Sodium chloride transport across isolated cecum mucosa was investigated in normal rats and rats with adaptive cecum growth induced by dietary polyethylene glycol (PEG). The normal cecum absorbed Cl in excess of Na with a small short-circuit current (ISC). Dietary adaptation led to large equivalent increments of Na and Cl net absorption without adequate ISC change. Inhibitor studies (mucosal amiloride 10(-3) and 10(-4) M; mucosal 4, 4-diisothiocyanatostilbene-2,2-disulfonic acid 5 x 10(-5) M; serosal furosemide 10(-3) M; serosal ouabain 10(-3) M) suggested that normal cecal NaCl absorption invo

Effects of dexamethasone on sodium-potassium-chloride cotransport in trabecular meshwork cells.

PURPOSE: Previous studies in the authors' laboratory have shown that bovine and human trabecular meshwork (TM) cells possess a robust sodium-potassium-chloride (Na-K-Cl) cotransport system that functions in regulating intracellular volume and may play a central role in modulating outflow facility across the TM. Dexamethasone, which can induce ocular hypertension, has been found to increase resistance to aqueous outflow across the TM. The current study was conducted to investigate the hypothesis that alteration of TM cell Na-K-Cl cotransport function, regulation, or both may be an underlying fa

A new intralesional therapy of cutaneous leishmaniasis with hypertonic sodium chloride solution.

One hundred and fifty-eight lesions of acute cutaneous leishmaniasis in 70 patients were treated with hypertonic sodium chloride solution "HSCS" (88 lesions) or sodium stibogluconate (50 lesions); 20 lesions were left untreated as controls. The injections were given at 7-10 day intervals, and patients were followed-up for 42 days. "HSCS" was shown to be a very effective local therapy (96.05% cure rate) and was as effective as local sodium stibogluconate (96.42% cure rate). With both types of therapy, most lesions needed only one injection. Mild improvement was noticed 7-10 days after the first

Impaired intestinal sodium and chloride transport in the blind loop syndrome of the rat.

Self-filling blind loops of rat jejunum were used as a model for the blind loop syndrome in humans. Electrical resistance, short circuit current, and unidirectional sodium and chloride fluxes were measured using the Ussing technique. Whereas net fluxes for sodium and chloride did not differ significantly from zero in the blind loop or in the control, unidirectional fluxes of either direction were decreased and electrical resistance was increased, indicating an increase in the tightness of the intestinal wall. Measurements of alternating current impedance and micropuncture experiments revealed

Effects of sodium chloride on pregnant sheep with reduced uteroplacental perfusion pressure.

This study investigated the effects of NaCl supplementation (5 mEq/kg/day) on the arterial pressure of pregnant and nonpregnant sheep with and without reduction of uteroplacental perfusion pressure. In pregnant sheep receiving NaCl supplementation during the third trimester, reduction of aortic pressure caudal to the kidneys to 65% of the upstream pressure (occlusion) caused a progressive increase in mean arterial pressure from 89 +/- 3 to 110 +/- 3 mm Hg over 2 weeks. Occlusion was accompanied by a decrease in urine flow. Six of seven sheep died or were killed because of severe respiratory di

Effects of tryptamine on active sodium and chloride transport in the isolated bullfrog cornea.

The effects of the serotonin analogue, tryptamine, on the active transepithelial transport of Na+ and Cl- in the in vitro bullfrog cornea were studied. Tryptamine, 1 mM, inhibited both the short-circuit current (Isc) and potential difference (PD) of corneas transporting either Na+ alone or both Na+ and Cl-. The electrical resistance, R, increased in all cases. Both unidirectional Na+ and Cl- fluxes were decreased by tryptamine and these changes accounted for the inhibitory effects on the Isc. The effects of tryptamine were considered along with those of 2 mM theophylline and 0.1 mM ouabain. Tr
