Comparative effects of Capsicum annuum selenium nanoparticles and sodium selenite on growth, antioxidant activity, bioaccumulation, and DNA damage in quails.

Selenium nanoparticles (Se-NPs), a nanoscale form of selenium, and sodium selenite (SS), an inorganic selenium source, were included in the diet of quails to evaluate their effects on growth performance, selenium accumulation, antioxidant status, and DNA damage. A total of 420 quails (14-day-old) were distributed into 5 groups. Each group consisted of 84 birds, arranged into 3 replicates (28 quails per replicate). The first group served as the control and received a basal diet, while the second and third groups were supplemented with Se-NPs at 0.2 and 0.4 mg/kg, respectively. The fourth and fi

Induction of apoptosis and autophagy by sodium selenite in A549 human lung carcinoma cells through generation of reactive oxygen species.

Selenium in the form of sodium selenite has been reported to exert anti-tumor effects in several cancer cell types by inducing autophagic cell death and apoptosis mediated by reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, the exact molecular pathways underlying these effects have not been fully established. The present study used A549 human lung carcinoma cells for further investigation of the anti-cancer mechanism of sodium selenite. We showed that sodium selenite modulated both the extrinsic and intrinsic apoptotic pathways, which were interconnected by Bid truncation. We used z-VAD-fmk, a pan-casp

Sodium Selenite Modulates IDO1/Kynurenine, TLR4, NF-κB and Bcl2/Bax
Pathway and Mitigates Acetic Acid-Induced Colitis in Rat.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Colitis is a main presentation of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and yet, has no definitive cure. Currently, corticosteroids, anti-tumor necrosis factor (anti-TNF) agents and 5-aminosalicylic acid derivatives are prescribed for management of colitis. Except their failure rate, they are not always tolerated because of their severe adverse effects. Additive formulas with fewer adverse effects may improve the treatment of colitis. METHODS: In this study, colitis was induced with intra-rectal injection of three concentrations of acetic acid (4, 6 and 8 v/v). Each group received

Metabolic and redox modulation by 2-deoxy-D-glucose and sodium selenite protects against pentylenetetrazole-kindled seizures, neuroinflammation and cognitive dysfunction.

Cellular metabolism, disrupted brain bioenergetics adaptability and neuroinflammation are inextricably linked in epileptogenesis. Their pathological interplay exacerbates glutamatergic storming, free-radical induced excitotoxicity and glial reactivity leading to network hyperexcitability. Therefore, a novel metabolic approach concurrently targeting cerebral energy metabolism, oxidative stress and neuroinflammation represents a rationale approach for dual seizure control and neuroprotection. 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2DG) inhibits glycolysis while sodium selenite (NaSe) mediates potent anti-inflammato

Sodium Selenite Ameliorates Silver Nanoparticles Induced Vascular Endothelial Cytotoxic Injury by Antioxidative Properties and Suppressing Inflammation Through Activating the Nrf2 Signaling Pathway.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNP) are the dominant nanomaterials in commercial products and the medical field, but the widespread occurrence of AgNP has become a global threat to human health. Growing studies indicate that AgNP exposure can induce vascular endothelial toxicity by excessive oxidative stress and inflammation, which is closely related to cardiovascular disease (CVD), but the potential intrinsic mechanism remains poorly elucidated. Thus, it has been crucial to control the toxicological effects of AgNP in order to improve their safety and increase the outcome of their applications.Multip

The Effects of BSA-Stabilized Selenium Nanoparticles and Sodium Selenite Supplementation on the Structure, Oxidative Stress Parameters and Selenium Redox Biology in Rat Placenta.

The chemical element selenium (Se) is a nonmetal that is in trace amounts indispensable for normal cellular functioning. During pregnancy, a low Se status can increase the risk of oxidative stress. However, elevated concentrations of Se in the body can also cause oxidative stress. This study aimed to compare the effects of BSA-stabilized Se nanoparticles (SeNPs, Se0) (BSA-bovine serum albumin) and inorganic sodium selenite (NaSe, Se+4) supplementation on the histological structure of the placenta, oxidative stress parameters and the total placental Se concentration of Wistar rats during pregna

The solvent and treatment regimen of sodium selenite cause its effects to vary on the radiation response of human bronchial cells from tumour and normal tissues.

Sodium selenite is often given to moderate the side effects of cancer therapy to enhance the cellular defence of non-cancerous cells. To determine whether sodium selenite during radiotherapy protects not only normal cells but also cancer cells, which would imply a reduction of the desired effect of irradiation on tumour during radiotherapy, the effect of the combined treatment of irradiation and sodium selenite was investigated. Human bronchial cells from carcinoma (A549) and normal tissue (BEAS-2B) were treated with sodium selenite and effects on growth and in combination with radiation on me

Comparison of antagonistic effects of nanoparticle-selenium, selenium-enriched yeast and sodium selenite against cadmium-induced cardiotoxicity via AHR/CAR/PXR/Nrf2 pathways activation.

Selenium (Se), a nutritionally essential mineral for humans and animals, has a significant antagonistic effect on heavy metal cadmium (Cd) biotoxicity. Still, the impact of different Se sources on alleviating Cd toxicity has received only limited attention. Therefore, the purpose of the current study was to assess the mitigation level of Cd-induced cardiotoxicity by different sources such as nanoparticles of Se, Se-rich yeast, and sodium selenite (SS). The results evidenced that the presence of Cd led to a significant increase in biochemical parameters such as lactate dehydrogenase and creatin
