Hard and Soft Tissue Asymmetry in Patients with Skeletal Class III Malocclusion: A Cone-Beam Computed Tomography Study.

This study aims to investigate hard and soft tissue asymmetry in skeletal Class III patients to elucidate how soft tissue thickness alters overall asymmetry and whether menton deviation is correlated with bilateral differences in hard and soft tissue prominence and soft tissue thickness. The cone-beam computed tomography data of 50 skeletal Class III adults were divided based on menton deviation into symmetric (n = 25; deviation ≤ 2.0 mm) and asymmetric (n = 25; deviation > 2.0 mm) groups. Forty-four corresponding hard and soft tissue points were identified. Bilateral hard and soft tissue prom

Novel computer-aided reconstruction of soft tissue defects following resection of oral and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Reconstruction of soft tissue defects following surgical tumor resection is important for quality of life in cancer patients with oral and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). This study presents a novel computer-aided reconstruction of soft tissue (CARST) technology employed with these patients. METHODS: We first described the CARST technology in detail in a report of a 34-year-old male patient with locally invasive right-sided tongue SCC following a nearly total glossectomy and reported the postoperative outcomes. This digital technology was applied to construct a 3D mod

Computed Tomographic Evaluation of Posttreatment Soft-Tissue Changes by Using a Lymphedema Scoring System in Patients with Oral Cancer.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate posttreatment soft-tissue changes in patients with oral cancer with computed tomography (CT). To accomplish that purpose, a scoring system was established, referring to the criteria of lower leg lymphedema (LE). METHODS AND RESULTS: One hundred and six necks in 95 patients who underwent oral oncologic surgery with neck dissection (ND) were analyzed retrospectively using routine follow-up CT images. A two-point scoring system to evaluate soft-tissue changes (so-called "LE score") was established as follows: Necks with a "honeycombing" appearance were as

Relationship of bone erosion with the urate and soft tissue components of the tophus in gout: a dual energy computed tomography study.

OBJECTIVES: Imaging and pathology studies have established a close relationship between tophus and bone erosion in gout. The tophus is an organized structure consisting of urate crystals and chronic inflammatory tissue. The aim of this work was to examine the relationship between bone erosion and each component of the tophus. METHODS: Plain radiographs and dual energy CT scans of the feet were prospectively obtained from 92 people with tophaceous gout. The 10 MTP joints were scored for erosion score, tophus urate and soft tissue volume. Data were analysed using generalized estimating equation

Growth of human renal carcinoma in soft agar colony formation assays measured by computer-assisted volume analysis.

Technical methods for assessing the growth and chemotherapy sensitivity of human tumor cells growing in soft-agar culture have been less than ideal. Within the past year, there have been reports of studying the extent of growth of human tumor cells in these cultures by quantitating the change in cumulative volume for the growth units observed. The present report describes the results of computer-assisted volume analysis applied to soft-agar cultures of cells from 74 primary renal cell carcinomas, 14 primary transitional cell carcinomas of the renal pelvis, and four different human renal cell c

Analysis of the main passive soft tissues associated with adult acquired flatfoot deformity development: A computational modeling approach.

Adult acquired flatfoot deformity (AAFD) is a pathology with a wide range of treatment options. Physicians decide the best treatment based on their experience, so the process is entirely subjective. A better understanding of soft tissue stress and its contribution in supporting the plantar arch could help to guide the clinical decision. Traditional experimental trials cannot consistently evaluate the contribution of each tissue. Therefore, in this research a 3-Dimensional FE foot model was reconstructed from a normal patient in order to measure the stress of the passive stabilizers of the arch

Development of a computational biomechanical model of the human upper-airway soft-tissues toward simulating obstructive sleep apnea.

Numerous challenges are faced in investigations aimed at developing a better understanding of the pathophysiology of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The anatomy of the tongue and other upper-airway tissues, and the ability to model their behavior, are central to such investigations. We present details of the construction and development of a soft-tissue model of the human upper airway, with the ultimate goal of simulating obstructive sleep apnea. The steps taken to produce a representative anatomical geometry, of which the associated muscle histology is also captured, are documented. An overvie

Simulation of daily soft multifocal contact lenses using SimVis Gekko: from in-vitro and computational characterization to clinical validation.

Multifocal contact lenses (MCLs) are one of the solutions to correct presbyopia, but their adoption is not widespread. To address this situation, visual simulators can be used to refine the adaptation process. This study aims to obtain accurate simulations for a visual simulator (SimVis Gekko; 2EyesVision) of daily soft MCL designs from four manufacturers. In-vitro characterization of these MCLs-several powers and additions- was obtained using NIMO TR-1504. From the averaged relative power profiles across powers, phase maps were reconstructed and the Through-Focus Visual Strehl metric was calc

Evaluation of Soft Tissue Compensations in Subjects With Facial Asymmetry Using Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT): A Retrospective Study.

Introduction Facial asymmetry influences aesthetics and can involve either hard or soft tissues or both. Underlying skeletal asymmetry can be compensated by differential expression of soft tissue thickness on either side. Orthognathic surgical planning needs to take the interaction between the hard and soft tissues into account. The aim of this study was to assess the bilateral thickness of hard tissues and the corresponding facial soft tissue in asymmetric subjects to assess the compensation using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging. Materials and methods CBCT measurements of 30 skel
