Ossifying fibromyxoid tumors are rare soft-tissue neoplasms, usually with an indolent course. However, atypical/malignant variants have been described, showing either local recurrence after complete excision or metastasis to the lungs, mediastinum, adrenals, or soft tissue. We report the case of an ossifying fibromyxoid tumor of the left ankle that metastasized to the lung and thyroid gland 12 years after the initial diagnosis and surgical treatment. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of this neoplasm metastasizing to the thyroid gland.

BACKGROUND: Orofacial neoplasms in children and young adults may differ significantly from those observed in adults. Our aim was to describe the epidemiological characteristics of histologically diagnosed orofacial neoplasms among children and young adults in Nigeria.
METHODS: This was a multicenter cross-sectional study across geopolitical zones in Nigeria. Annual reports of clinical information and surgical biopsies submitted at the Oral Pathology Laboratory, clinic day registries, surgical day case registries and operative theatre registries were retrieved from January 2008 to March 2024.

INTRODUCTION: Soft tissue tumors are complex neoplasms requiring accurate diagnosis, often through fine needle aspiration (FNA). The World Health Organization (WHO) classification system aims to standardize cytopathological diagnoses and assess the risk of malignancy (ROM) for these tumors.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study reviewed cytological specimens from January 2022 to June 2023. Samples were categorized using the WHO classification into 6 categories: nondiagnostic, benign, atypical, soft tissue neoplasm of uncertain malignant potential, suspicious for malignancy (SFM), an

OBJECTIVE: The "penumbra sign" on unenhanced T1-weighted MR sequences is thought to be helpful for discriminating subacute osteomyelitis from bone neoplasm. We sought to quantify the sensitivity and specificity of this sign for bone and soft tissue infection in a general referral population.
DESIGN: Clinical coding was used to identify patients admitted to Middlemore Hospital (Auckland, New Zealand) between January 2000 and November 2003 with a diagnosis of either infection or neoplasm of the upper or lower limb who had undergone an MRI scan. One hundred and eighty-three patients were include

A 7-year-old castrated male dachshund dog was presented because of non-weight-bearing right thoracic limb lameness with a soft tissue mass of the proximal humerus. Orthogonal radiographs of the affected limb showed a region of geographic lysis and variable cortical thinning centered in the proximal humeral metaphysis. Differential diagnoses for these lesions included benign and malignant processes, including primary osseous neoplasia. Right forelimb amputation was conducted, and histopathologic assessment facilitated diagnosis of a grade II/intermediate-grade soft tissue sarcoma invading the p

The standard treatment for extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma is wide excision. However, extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma is often located in the deep layers of the extremities and pelvis, so functional impairment due to wide resection is unavoidable in many cases. In addition, the efficacy of radiotherapy and chemotherapy has not been defined, so no treatment method is established for unresectable cases. Here we report a case involving a man in his late 60s with extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma of the pelvis who responded to proton beam radiotherapy with intra-arterial chemotherapy and

The clinicopathological features of 12 extraserosal solitary fibrous tumours (SFT) are described. The age of the patients ranged from 18 to 72 years (mean: 48.2 years; median: 54 years); 5 were female patients. Seven lesions arose in soft tissue (5 in perifascial, and 1 each in subcutaneous and intramuscular tissues). They were situated in the groin (2 cases) and the neck, right buttock, left scapula, upper arm, and anterior abdominal wall (1 case each). One polypoid lesion was seen in in the nasal cavity and 1 in the nasopharynx; 2 neoplasms arose in the urinary bladder and 1 was located in t

Malignant neoplasms of the paranasal sinuses and nasal cavity are rare, comprising only 3% of all head and neck malignancies. This includes both primary sinonasal neoplasms and metastatic disease. We present the case of a patient with a maxillary soft tissue swelling, which proved to be a rare malignant tumor of maxillary sinus origin, a sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma.

Recent studies of Class II histocompatibility antigen expression in bone and soft tissue sarcomas have suggested that malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) may express HLA-DR, whereas histologically similar pleomorphic, epithelioid, and spindle cell malignant neoplasms generally do not. To test whether these observations are reproducible in the differential diagnosis of soft tissue sarcomas, anti-HLA-DR antibodies LK8D3 and LN3 were applied to formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded sections of MFH, neurofibrosarcoma (NFS), leiomyosarcoma (LMS), synovial sarcoma (SS), fibrosarcoma (FS), angiosarcoma

This review summarizes the clinicopathological features of recently characterized variants of lipomatous tumours of soft tissue, attempts to deal with some difficult conceptual issues relating to adipocytic neoplasms and aims to provide an update on cytogenetic aspects of fatty tumours. Myolipoma is a rare benign neoplasm, occurring most frequently in adults in the deep soft tissue of the abdomen or retroperitoneum, and is composed of irregularly admixed mature adipose and smooth muscle tissues. Chondroid lipoma represents an unusual benign lesion occurring mainly in adult females subcutaneous

The majority of neoplasms of the head and neck are of epithelial origin primarily including mucosal squamous cell neoplasms (papillomas; squamous cell carcinoma) as well as salivary gland neoplasms. However, the full spectrum of mesenchymal neoplasms (benign and malignant) typically arising in soft tissue sites may also develop in superficial layers of the upper aerodigestive tract. The diversity of mesenchymal neoplasms arising in the head and neck is beyond the scope of this article, and our focus will be on some of the more common and/or diagnostic problematic mesenchymal tumors occurring i

Soft tissue myxomas are benign mesenchymal neoplasms typically found in the intramuscular components of the proximal extremities. However, soft tissue myxomas in the chest wall are rare. We report the case of a 41-year-old woman with soft tissue myxoma who presented with a slowly growing, palpable lump on her left anterior chest wall that has been present for several years. Mammography revealed an oval, circumscribed, and hyperdense mass in the retromammary fat layer of the upper inner quadrant of the left breast. Ultrasonography revealed an oval, circumscribed, and hypoechoic mass with intern

The mediastinum is an anatomically defined space in which organs and major blood vessels reside with surrounding soft tissue elements. The thymus is an important organ in the mediastinum, and many of the masses encountered in the mediastinum are related to this organ. Most neoplasms diagnosed in the mediastinum are epithelial tumours (thymomas and thymic carcinomas), lymphomas or germ cell tumours. In contrast, soft tissue tumours of the mediastinum are rare. In 1963, Pachter and Lattes systematically reviewed soft tissue pathology of the mediastinum, covering the hitherto described [2, 226, 2

Soft tissue tumors encompass a wide variety of mesenchymal neoplasms exhibiting diverse clinical, pathologic, and molecular features. Among these, osteoid and/or chondroid matrix deposition in some soft tissue tumors represents a noticeable characteristic. Unlike matrices present in bone tumors where they likely reveal the respective cells of origin (i.e., osteoblastic or chondroblastic precursors), those existing in soft tissue tumors more often denote a metaplastic phenomenon and reflect the diversity of differentiation these tumors can display. While many soft tissue tumor types can occasio

Soft tissue sarcomas are capable of causing diagnostic bewilderment for the surgical pathologist, because of their diversity of differentiation and overlapping histologic appearances. Immunohistochemical studies provide a means whereby this confusion can be resolved in many cases, and electron microscopy also may play a useful role in this process. This overview presents a summary of results of these 2 adjuvant modalities of pathologic analysis, as applied to the spectrum of malignant soft tissue neoplasms.

Radiographic examination of soft tissue extremity masses is frequently inconclusive. In 18 patients with normal or nonspecifically abnormal radiographs, gray scale ultrasonography provided useful additional information. It was possible to distinguish fluid collections from solid masses, and recurrent venous thrombosis from hematoma in anticoagulated patients. Occasionally, specific diagnoses were suggested on the basis of ultrasonic morphologic characteristics. Diagnoses included soft tissue neoplasms, hematomas, aneurysms, synovial cysts, abscesses, and a lymphocele. Ultrasonically guided per

Any medical diagnosis should take a multimodal approach, especially those involving tumour-like conditions, as entities that mimic neoplasms have overlapping features and may present detrimental outcomes if they are underdiagnosed. These case reports present diagnostic pitfalls resulting from overdependence on a single diagnostic parameter for three musculoskeletal neoplasm mimics: brown tumour (BT) that was mistaken for giant cell tumour (GCT), methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus osteomyelitis mistaken for osteosarcoma and a pseudoaneurysm mistaken for a soft tissue sarcoma. BACKGROUND: Within the spectrum of melanocytic-differentiated tumors, the challenge faced by pathologists is discerning accurate diagnoses, with clear cell sarcoma of soft tissues standing out as a rare and aggressive neoplasm originating from the neural crest. Accounting for 1% of all soft tissue sarcomas, clear cell sarcoma of soft tissues poses diagnostic complexities, often misidentified owing to its phenotypic resemblance to malignant melanoma. This chapter delves into the intricacies of clear cell sarcoma of soft tissues, its epidemiology, characteristic manifestations, and the imperativ

Adult male Syrian hamsters were inoculated subcutaneously with herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1, 10(6) PFU) or ultraviolet-inactivated HSV-1. One week later 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate (TPA, 2 x 20 nmol weekly) was topically applied to the dorsal skin at the site of virus inoculation for 6 months. Control animals received HSV-1 only or topical treatment with TPA in acetone or acetone alone. Small tumour nodules developed in the HSV-1 group close to the site of virus inoculation 10-15 months after the beginning of the experiment. The neoplasms were classified as angiolipomas, chondro
