Soil systems are a common receptor of anthropogenic mercury (Hg) contamination. Soils play an important role in the containment or dispersion of pollution to surface water, groundwater or the atmosphere. A one-dimensional model for simulating Hg fate and transport for variably saturated and transient flow conditions is presented. The model is developed using the HP1 code, which couples HYDRUS-1D for the water flow and solute transport to PHREEQC for geochemical reactions. The main processes included are Hg aqueous speciation and complexation, sorption to soil organic matter, dissolution of cin

Two polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs)-degrading bacteria were isolated by traditional enrichment technique from electrical transformer fluid (Askarel)-contaminated soils in Lagos, Nigeria. They were classified and identified as Enterobacter sp. SA-2 and Pseudomonas sp. SA-6 on the basis of 16S rRNA gene analysis, in addition to standard cultural and biochemical techniques. The strains were able to grow extensively on dichloro- and trichlorobenzenes. Although they failed to grow on tetrachlorobenzenes, monochloro- and dichlorobenzoic acids, they were able to utilize all monochlorobiphenyls, and s

Seven methyl parathion-degrading bacteria were isolated from a long-term methyl parathion contaminated soil and were found to belong to the genera Pseudaminobacter, Achromobacter, Brucella, and Ochrobactrum. Southern blot analysis using an mpd gene probe revealed that their hydrolase genes were similar to the mpd gene from Plesiomonas sp. strain M6 and were all located on the chromosome. Gene libraries were constructed from genomic DNA of each of the 7 organophosphorus pesticide-degrading bacteria, and their mpd genes were cloned and sequenced. Sequence analysis revealed that their hydrolase g

A headspace solid-phase microextraction method, followed by a gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric analysis, has been developed for the screening of soil samples polluted by coal tar or refined petroleum products. Vapor pressures of target analytes were determined using a capillary GC method to identify environmentally important components with a sufficiently high vapor pressure to be analyzed in the headspace mode. The method was optimized under non-equilibrium conditions with simplicity and automation in mind and does not require any extraction procedure or sample preparation, other than g

Supercritical fluid extraction and liquid chromatography-electrochemical detection (LC-ECD) were used to the determination of chlorophenols in contaminated soil samples. Full factorial design experiments were used in order to optimize the extraction parameters: pressure, extraction cell temperature and percentage of modifier. Pressure and percentage of modifier (methanol) had statistically significant effects on the recovery of the chlorophenols. Good repeatability (4.9-11.8%) and reproducibility (4.9-12.5%) were achieved and low detection limits (3-150 ng g-1) were obtained. The method was va

A routine analysis of drinking water conducted in September 1987 in a Rhenish water works revealed a perchloroethylene (PER) content of 3 micrograms/l. Within less than 3 months the concentration in the two northern wells of the entire battery consisting of 4 wells rose to 20 micrograms/l, and hence the complete battery had to be shut off from the water supply network. The pumped-up water was diverted to a draining plant via the precipitation tank of the water works. During the two subsequent months the PER concentration continued to rise, especially in well No. 1, to more than 120 micrograms/

Mining activities are one of the main contamination sources of Cd in soil. However, the information about the influence of silver mining on Cd pollution in soil in mining-affected areas is limited. In the present study, sixteen paired soil and rice grain samples were collected from the farmland along the Luxi River nearby a silver mine in Yingtan City, Jiangxi Province, China. The total, bioavailable, and fraction of Cd in soil and Cd content in rice grain were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The transformation of Cd in the soil-rice system and potential health risk

Many countries struggle with the systematic separation and disposal of medical waste, which poses significant risks of disease transmission and cross-contamination. This study synthesizes literature from 2017 to 2023 to examine the environmental consequences of improper healthcare waste management, specifically regarding soil and water ecosystems. The review establishes a direct scientific link between medical waste dumping sites and the presence of heavy metal concentrations that exceed safety thresholds in surrounding agricultural lands. A key finding of this research is the identification o

Serbia represents a valuable setting for improving soil pollution monitoring, particularly in urban environments facing regulatory and infrastructural constraints. In a country with some of the highest cancer incidence and mortality rates in Europe, persistent soil contamination poses a critical environmental and public health concern. This study provides an integrated assessment of radiological and chemical health risks in the soils of one of Serbia's largest cities, impacted by intensive industrial activities and war-related damage. Activity concentrations of radionuclides and metal contents

Earthworms are widely used as biological indicators of soil contamination and are often referred to as the 'intestine of the soil'; however, their effectiveness can vary across regions and environmental conditions. The performance of earthworms as indicators of soil pollution may vary among regions, and there is a need to assess their reliability under specific environmental conditions. So, in this study, soil and earthworm samples were collected from 19 locations across Punjab, Pakistan, to assess heavy metal pollution and bioaccumulation using geoaccumulation indices (Igeo) and bioaccumulati

Long-standing and chronic soil pollution in the Polar Regions is the most persistent. Simultaneous contamination with petroleum products and heavy metals puts additional load on the soil microbial community. The purpose of this work was to determine the composition of prokaryotes in the soils of Mount Kaskama with long-standing contamination with petroleum products and heavy metals (Murmansk region, Russia) and outside this zone and the potential ability of bacteria to participate in the self-purification of these soils. Using high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA gene V3-V4 fragments, an inc

The migration behavior of pollutants is affected by consolidation and temperature when using thermal desorption technology to clean contaminated sites. Based on a one-dimensional consolidation model for unsaturated soil and the traditional heat conduction equation, a pollutant transport model accounting for the combined effects of consolidation and temperature was established in this paper. An analytical solution was obtained by using the separation of variables method and the integral transformation method. In addition, the correctness of the proposed model was verified via a comparison betwe

Mercury (Hg) contamination in paddy soils poses a health risk to rice consumers and the environmental behavior of Hg determines its toxicity. Thus, the variations of Hg speciation are worthy of exploring. In this study, microcosm and pot experiments were conducted to elucidate Hg transformation, methylation, bioaccumulation, and risk coupled with biogeochemical cycling of key elements in a Hg-polluted alkaline paddy soil. In microcosm and pot experiments, organic- and sulfide-bound and residual Hg accounted for more than 98% of total Hg, and total contents of dissolved, exchangeable, specifica

Although different amendments have been used for the immobilization of metals and metalloids in contaminated soils, in most of them there are still important challenges that need to be faced in order to achieve an optimal result. In this work, a new material based on a carbon foam impregnated with goethite nanoneedles has been developed with the aim of evaluating its effect on the mobility and availability of As, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in an industrial soil. For this purpose, leaching, sequential extraction and phytotoxicity studies have been carried out. The results were compared with the same car

Studies about biodegradation potential in soils often refer to artificially contaminated and simplified systems, overlooking the complexity associated with contaminated sites in a real context. This work aims to provide a holistic view on microbiome assembly and functional diversity in the model site SIN Brescia-Caffaro (Italy), characterized by historical and uneven contamination by organic and inorganic compounds. Here, physical and chemical analyses and microbiota characterization were applied on one-hundred-twenty-seven soil samples to unravel the environmental factors driving bacterial co
