Nucleoside diphosphate kinase (NDPK) is a ubiquitous enzyme that maintains cellular nucleotide balance by catalyzing the transfer of phosphate groups between nucleoside diphosphates and triphosphates. Although the evolutionary conservation of NDPK is well established, several aspects of its diversification and functional adaptation remain unclear. The central question of this work is how NDPK evolved across plant species, focusing on the Solanaceae family and how its evolutionary history relates to the diversification of its cellular functions. Phylogenetic and molecular dating analyses showed

BACKGROUND: Allergen cross-reactivity between tobacco and other species of Solanaceae family (tomato, potato, aubergine and egg plant) have been reported. We have recently studied IgE response to tobacco in asthmatic patients sensitised to Lolium perenne (Perennial rye grass pollen) and have found that 30% of the tobacco responsive patients also have latex sensitisation.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to investigate the possibility of cross-reactivity between tobacco and latex in asthmatic patients with IgE response to latex.
METHODS: A study was performed on tobacco and latex exposure

Plants from the genus Physalis L. (family Solanaceae), native to warm and subtropical regions of Central and South America, are particularly rich in secondary metabolites, e.g.: withanolides, physalins, calystegines, tropane and nortropane alkaloids. Due to the high biological activities of these compounds, in the tropics Physalis plants have been used for centuries as medicinal herbs in the treatment of urinary and skin diseases, gonorrhea, ulcers, sores and as a vermicidal drug. This review describes the main categories of secondary metabolites, their distribution, chemistry, biosynthesis as

Tropane alkaloids (TA) are valuable secondary plant metabolites which are mostly found in high concentrations in the Solanaceae and Erythroxylaceae families. The TAs, which are characterized by their unique bicyclic tropane ring system, can be divided into three major groups: hyoscyamine and scopolamine, cocaine and calystegines. Although all TAs have the same basic structure, they differ immensely in their biological, chemical and pharmacological properties. Scopolamine, also known as hyoscine, has the largest legitimate market as a pharmacological agent due to its treatment of nausea, vomiti

A food-poisoning case due to eating the roots of Datura occurred in Kawasaki City, Japan in 2014. The Datura plant was mistakenly collected instead of burdock in a domestic garden. The roots of these plants are quite similar to each other. We presumed that the specimen was the root of Datura, but it was difficult to classify it only from the morphology. Using LC-MS/MS, we detected atropine and scopolamine from the remaining plant specimen. Therefore, we applied the DNA barcoding method. The results showed that the specimen was classified into Solanaceae family, but not Asteraceae family. Thus,

Psychoses caused by an intoxication with atropine or scopolamine are rarely published. Nevertheless atropine and scopolamine were being used in the ancient civilisations and are still in use today. The intoxication is characterised by dose-dependent and substance-dependent syndrome with specific central and peripheral symptoms. Atropine and scopolamine cause a central and peripheral anticholinergic blockade of the muscarine receptor. Psychiatric symptoms include restlessness, excitement, hallucinations, euphoria, disorientation but also stupor, coma and respiratory depression. History, pathoph

Acute interstitial nephritis (AIN) is an important cause of reversible acute kidney injury and pathologically characterized by inflammatory infiltrate in the renal interstitium. Solanum nigrum (S. nigrum) is a medicinal plant member of the Solanaceae family. Although S. nigrum has been traditionally used to treat various ailments such as pain, inflammation, and fever, it has also been reported to have a toxic effect, resulting in anticholinergic symptoms. However, there have been no reports of AIN caused by S. nigrum. Here, we report the first case of biopsy-confirmed AIN after ingestion of S.

Treatment with the usual antimalarial drugs, have induced parasite resistance, reinforcing the need to finding natural antimalarial components that would be found on plants from the forest. Therefore, we decided to look for these components in Costa Rican plants from a protected forest area. Fresh and dry extracts of roots, bark, leaves, flowers and fruits of 25 plants from a biological reserve in Costa Rica, Reserva Biol6gica Alberto Manuel Brenes (REBAMB), were studied in vitro for the presence of substances with antimalarial activity. By studying the inhibition of P berghei schizogony, we a

With a global increase in mortality, particularly in low-income countries, cancer remains one of the most devastating diseases. Medicinal plants rich in phytochemicals have shown promise as chemoprotective and anticancer agents. As a result, in this study, we compiled a list of medicinal plant species that have been used to treat cancer in the last decade. The results of our review show that 170 plant species from 53 plant families have been used to treat various types of cancer. Plant species are categorised based on their taxonomic position and level of cytotoxicity (very strong, strong, cyt

BACKGROUND: Oral cavity cancers are generally considered etiologically similar, with a majority (>75%) attributable to smoking/alcohol. Yet, incidence trends for oral cavity cancers have recently diverged in the United States and several European countries (with declines for most oral cavity cancers but increases for oral tongue cancers), suggesting etiologic differences. This study quantified etiologic heterogeneity across oral cavity cancers using data from the NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study.
METHODS: Cox regression models were used to quantify associations (hazard ratios [HRs] and populati

Phytochemical studies of ripe berries of Solanum nigrum L. (Solanaceae) led to the identification of seven previously undescribed steroidal alkaloids and four known ones. Structural elucidation was primarily based on NMR, HR-ESI-MS, IR spectroscopy, and GC analysis following acid hydrolysis. The cytotoxic activities of the seven compounds were assessed using a cytotoxicity assay against the A549 cell line. Anti-inflammatory activities were evaluated by measuring their effects on nitric oxide (NO) production in LPS-induced RAW 264.7 macrophage cells. Results showed that compounds 3 and 4 inhibi

A CHCl(3): MeOH extract of the fruit ofLycium chinense Mill. (Solanaceae) was found to afford significant protection against carbon tetrachloride-induced toxicity in primary cultures of rat hepatocytes. Subsequent activity-guided fractionation resulted in the isolation of zeaxanthin and zeaxanthin dipalmitate as antihepatotoxic components. Incubation of injured hepatocytes with zeaxanthin dipalmitate reduced the levels of glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT) and sorbitol dehydrogenase (SDH) released from damaged cells to 60.5% and 76.3% of those released from untreated controls, respectively. Solanum lyratum (SLEC) Thunberg (Solanaceae) has been used as a traditional herbal medicine in China for centuries. Numerous studies have shown that SLEC Thunberg (Solanaceae) extract inhibited cancer cell growth in vitro. Herein, we investigated cell death-induced by EcoAc, water, chloroform, butanol extract of SLEC in human oral cancer cell lines (HSC-3, SAS, and CAL-27) in vitro. Different SLEC extract induced cytotoxic effects in human oral cancer cells were examined by contrast phase microscopy. We selected the chloroform extract of SLEC to examine the cytotoxic effects by using DAPI stai

In this paper, the authors review the history of the pharmacological treatment of bipolar disorder, from the first nonspecific sedative agents introduced in the 19th and early 20th century, such as solanaceae alkaloids, bromides and barbiturates, to John Cade's experiments with lithium and the beginning of the so-called "Psychopharmacological Revolution" in the 1950s. We also describe the clinical studies and development processes, enabling the therapeutic introduction of pharmacological agents currently available for the treatment of bipolar disorder in its different phases and manifestations
