Weed seed inactivation in soil mesocosms via biosolarization with mature compost and tomato processing waste amendments.

BACKGROUND: Biosolarization is a fumigation alternative that combines passive solar heating with amendment-driven soil microbial activity to temporarily create antagonistic soil conditions, such as elevated temperature and acidity, that can inactivate weed seeds and other pest propagules. The aim of this study was to use a mesocosm-based field trial to assess soil heating, pH, volatile fatty acid accumulation and weed seed inactivation during biosolarization. RESULTS: Biosolarization for 8 days using 2% mature green waste compost and 2 or 5% tomato processing residues in the soil resulted in

Carcinogens and endemic squamous cancer of the oesophagus in Transkei, South Africa. Environmental initiation is the dominant factor; tobacco or other carcinogens of low potency or concentration are sufficient for carcinogenesis in the predisposed mucosa.

Oesophageal cancer is common in Africa, and is a major cause of death in Transkei, South Africa. The cause of this endemic disease has been debated for many decades. A continuing focus of research has been identification of a single potent carcinogen. I argue that endemic incidence of oesophageal cancer is associated with potent initiation, not with potent carcinogenesis. Tobacco is a known oesophageal carcinogen, and there is very strong evidence that it is causally involved in a significant proportion of victims. Other potential carcinogens present in the environment include fungal mycotoxin

Sources of Environmental Exposure to the Naturally Occurring Anabolic Steroid Ecdysterone in Horses.

Ecdysterone controls moulting and reproduction in insects, crustaceans, and helminths. It is also produced by many plants, probably as an insect deterrent. The steroid is not made by vertebrates but has anabolic effects in mammals and could be useful for treating sarcopenia in aged horses. However, ecdysterone is banned in horseracing and equestrian sports, and with no limit of reporting, the risk of unintended exposure to this naturally occurring prohibited substance is a concern. To explore this risk, pasture plants and hay samples were analysed for ecdysterone content, as well as samples of

The potential for microwave technology and the ideal profile method to aid in salt reduction.

This study was the first to evaluate the influence of the combination strategies of flavor addition and microwave-assisted thermal sterilization (MATS) processing for salt reduction implications. In freshly prepared mashed potatoes, a 30% and 50% salt reduction (w/w) in comparison to a 100% salt sample with three flavor variations (no additional flavor, garlic, and pepper) were investigated. Also, using the ideal profile method (IPM), the influence of MATS versus retort processing, in comparison to a freshly prepared sample, and flavor addition on mashed potato sensory properties and acceptanc

Solamargine induces autophagy-mediated apoptosis and enhances bortezomib activity in multiple myeloma.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is an incurable plasma cell malignancy with a poor survival rate. Conventional chemotherapeutic agent-induced adverse events, including toxicity, neuropathy or drug resistance, significantly decrease the patients' quality of life and can even lead to interruption of treatment. Therefore, novel therapeutic drugs and strategies are urgently needed to improve MM therapy and patient outcomes. Here, we show that solamargine (SM), a steroidal alkaloid glycoside isolated from a Chinese herb Solanum nigrum L., exhibits promising anti-MM activity. In particular, SM suppressed the

Biologically safe restoration of heavy metal-contaminated soils through plant-microbe synergy.

Abandoned mines have created extensive idle areas contaminated with heavy metals (HMs). Conventional remediation methods are often costly, environmentally disruptive, and pose risks to human health. As a sustainable alternative, a biological approach utilizing metal-tolerant plant growth-promoting bacteria (mPGPBs) was employed to remediate HM-contaminated soils and assess their biological safety. Five mPGPB strains-Pseudarthrobacter sp., Pseudomonas sp., and Agrobacterium sp.-were isolated from contaminated mine soils and screened for metal tolerance and plant growth-promoting capabilities. I

Solasonine ameliorates cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury via suppressing TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB pathway and activating AMPK/Nrf2/HO-1 pathway.

Solasonine (SS), the main active ingredient of Solanum nigrum L., has been reported to possess a variety of pharmacological properties. A recent study demonstrated a neuroprotective effect of SS in a mouse nerve injury model. However, its protective effects on cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury (CIRI) remain to be elucidated. We investigated herein the in vitro and in vivo neuroprotective effects of SS. Primary hippocampal neurons were exposed to oxygen and glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R) to construct an in vitro model while rats were treated with middle cerebral artery occlusion/r

A Novel Combinatorial Regimen Using Sorafenib and Uttroside B, A US FDA-designated 'Orphan Drug', for the Treatment of Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

INTRODUCTION: Sorafenib (Sor) is the first-line treatment option in clinics for treating advanced unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, acquired chemoresistance and adverse side effects associated with Sor monotherapy limit its clinical benefits. We have previously reported the exceptional anti-HCC potential of uttroside B (Utt-B), a furostanol saponin isolated in our lab from Solanum nigrum Linn. leaves. The current study has evaluated the supremacy of a combinatorial regimen of Sor and Utt-B over Sor monotherapy. METHODS: MTT assay was used for In vitro cytotoxicity studies.

Treating chronic atrophic gastritis: identifying sub-population based on real-world TCM electronic medical records.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) is a complex chronic disease caused by multiple factors that frequently occurs disease in the clinic. The worldwide prevalence of CAG is high. Interestingly, clinical CAG patients often present with a variety of symptom phenotypes, which makes it more difficult for clinicians to treat. Therefore, there is an urgent need to improve our understanding of the complexity of the clinical CAG population, obtain more accurate disease subtypes, and explore the relationship between clinical symptoms and medication. Therefore, based on the integr

Solasonine inhibits growth of gastric cancer by targeting FTL-mediated ferroptosis.

Solasonine (SS), a principal bioactive constituent of Solanum nigrum L., has attracted considerable attention due to its pronounced cytotoxic effects on cancer cells. Nevertheless, the precise mechanism of SS against gastric cancer remains inadequately explored. In this study, the therapeutic effects and potential targets of SS against gastric cancer were investigated. The results showed that SS markedly inhibited cell proliferation and promoted cell death in gastric cancer cells. Pharmacological inhibition studies revealed that the antitumor effects of SS predominantly rely on ferroptosis rat

Marked effect of topical application of Chinese medicine combined with moxibustion in a case of refractory malignant ascites in diffuse liver cancer.

BACKGROUND: Although diffuse hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is rarely encountered in clinical practice, it frequently leads to the refractory complication of malignant ascites. Conventional treatments such as diuretics, therapeutic paracentesis, and intraperitoneal chemotherapy often yield suboptimal outcomes. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a detailed case of a 55-year-old female patient with diffuse HCC (CNLC stage IV, Child-Pugh C), portal vein tumor thrombus, and malignant ascites refractory to diuretics. Following confirmation of the diagnosis, she was treated with a novel approach: topical

Synthesis and herbicidal activities of acylalanine-containing 3-(pyridin-2-yl)benzothiazol-2-ones.

BACKGROUND: 3-(Pyridin-2-yl)benzothiazol-2-one derivatives are a novel class of protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO) inhibitors. Although they demonstrate extraordinary herbicidal activity against broadleaf weeds, their efficacy against grass weeds remains limited. To develop broad-spectrum herbicide candidates, a series of 3-(pyridin-2-yl)benzothiazol-2-one derivatives bearing acylalanine moiety were designed in this study. RESULTS: Using a hybridization-substructure-combination strategy, the active groups of acylalanine fungicides were incorporated into the 3-(pyridin-2-yl)benzothiazol-2-one sc
