Optimization of anaerobic digestion of municipal solid waste in combined process and sequential staging.

The optimization of anaerobic digestion aims to maximize organic waste stabilization after a short digestion period. This paper presents the optimization performance of the combined anaerobic digestion and sequential staging concept in a thermophilic, solid-state batch system as a treatment technology prior to landfill. The former involves enhanced pre-stage flushing with the addition of microaeration and inoculum in the methane phase. The latter involves leachate cross-recirculation between the mature and fresh waste reactors without conducting a pre-stage operation. The optimized process for

Performance Research of Ultra-High Performance Concrete Incorporating Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Fly Ash.

Waste management poses escalating threats to environmental sustainability, particularly with municipal solid waste (MSW) growth. Incineration, a widely adopted method for reducing waste volume, produces millions of tons of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWIFA) each year. Despite its high toxicity and classification as a hazardous solid waste, its ultrafine particle size and pozzolanic activity offer potential for its use in construction materials. In this study, MSWIFA was used to replace 6%, 12%, 18% and 24% of cementitious materials, and the effect of MSWIFA substitution rate o

Assessing the determinants of municipal solid waste generation in Europe: A machine learning approach.

Waste management is significant for achieving climate goals, considering its contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions. While differences in waste management systems and generation rates across European countries are closely linked to socio-economic, demographic, and environmental factors, previous studies have predominantly focused on specific regions or local municipalities. This study addresses this gap by analyzing Europe as a single entity, providing an overview of the current waste management practices and legislation, assessing influencing factors and employing machine learning (M

Recognizing the value of municipal solid waste resource utilization in delivering carbon dioxide removal.

This paper attempts to verify that the resource utilization of municipal solid waste (MSW) is a feasible method to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We combine the data and empirical study results of Shanghai, China, to calculate and project Shanghai's contribution to China's 2030 carbon peak commitment through MSW resource utilization process from 2021 to 2030. The calculation uses IPCC recommended methods. The results show: compared to Scenario 1 (the traditional mixed treatment of MSW), Scenario 2 (the classification of MSW for resource utilization) demonstrates significant carbon emission r

Production of avermectins by Streptomyces avermitilis through solid-state fermentation using agro-industrial waste.

The natural products (NPs) avermectins from Streptomyces show exceptional insecticidal activity and become the most widely produced and used biopesticides in the world. Avermectins are produced by submerged fermentation (SmF), generating significant amount of effluent, exhaust gas and solid waste. We therefore endeavored to establish a green and sustainable alternative through solid-state fermentation (SSF) using agro-industrial waste. We determined the optimal culture medium composition and fermentation style through SSF. The maximum concentration of avermectin B1a (3.83 mg/gds) was obtained

Lessons Learned from Air Quality Assessments in Communities Living near Municipal Solid Waste Landfills.

Over 292 million tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) are generated annually in the United States, with more than half disposed of in landfills. Municipal solid waste landfills (MSWLFs) are stationary sources of air pollution and potential health risks for nearby communities. The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) has completed over 300 public health assessments (PHAs) and related investigations at MSWLFs and open dumps since the 1980s. This paper reviews the ATSDR's evaluations of air pathway concerns at 125 MSWLF sites assessed between 1988 and early 2025, with many bein

Environmental performance evaluation of large-scale municipal solid waste incinerators using data envelopment analysis.

Limited to insufficient land resources, incinerators are considered in many countries such as Japan and Germany as the major technology for a waste management scheme capable of dealing with the increasing demand for municipal and industrial solid waste treatment in urban regions. The evaluation of these municipal incinerators in terms of secondary pollution potential, cost-effectiveness, and operational efficiency has become a new focus in the highly interdisciplinary area of production economics, systems analysis, and waste management. This paper aims to demonstrate the application of data en

Gas-Pressurized Torrefaction of Lignocellulosic Solid Wastes: Deoxygenation and Aromatization Mechanisms of Cellulose.

A novel gas-pressurized (GP) torrefaction method at 250 °C has recently been developed that realizes the deep decomposition of cellulose in lignocellulosic solid wastes (LSW) to as high as 90% through deoxygenation and aromatization reactions. However, the deoxygenation and aromatization mechanisms are currently unclear. In this work, these mechanisms were studied through a developed molecular structure calculation method and the GP torrefaction of pure cellulose. The results demonstrate that GP torrefaction at 250 °C causes 47 wt.% of mass loss and 72 wt.% of O removal for cellulose, while tr

The adsorption and degradation of chlorpyriphos-methyl, pendimethalin and metalaxyl in solid urban waste compost.

To evaluate the feasibility of using compost to prepare substrates for the disposal of pesticide residues, adsorption and degradation studies were carried out on three widely used agricultural pesticides: chlorpyriphos-methyl, pendimethalin and metalaxyl. Obtained from solid urban waste, this compost has been shown to be able to adsorb high levels of chlorpyriphos-methyl and pendimethalin (85%, 100%) whereas metalaxyl was only adsorbed at a level of 37%. However, adding smectite to the compost increased the adsorption of metalaxyl by 117%. Chlorpyriphos-methyl and pendimethalin degraded quickl

Effects of industrial solid waste on the generation of PCDD/Fs, dl-PCBs and PAHs tuned by waste pseudo-components during engineering co-combustion.

Co-combustion of municipal solid waste (MSW) with industrial solid waste (ISW) is becoming prevailing. But its effects on generation of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) remain unclear, hindering their efficient control. Hence, six batches of engineering incineration tests containing diverse blending types and ratios of ISW were designed in an incinerator of 650 t/d. To target the relationship between complex waste components and contaminants, a pseudo-component matrix model
