Pi phenotype determinations were performed on umbilical cord serum specimens of 347 infants born in Mogadishu (Somalia) hospitals. Phenotyping was performed by isoelectric focusing on polyacrylamide gel slabs. Sera containing alpha1AT in types other than MM were also studied by crossed antigen-antibody immunoelectrophoresis on agar. The most frequently occuring Pi allele proved to be PiM. With respect to the other African populations studied so far, there was a high prevalence of the PiS and PiZ alleles. In particular, three individuals were found with the ZZ phenotype, which had not yet been

The Pasteur Institute studied 103 mycetoma patients in Somalia between 1959 and 1964. Grains were seen in 94 of them and this, added to cultural features, allowed the diagnosis of 60 pathogens as follows: 44 Madurella mycetomi, 1 Leptosphaeria senegalensis, 7 Pyrenochaeta romeroi (or Madurella grisea), 3 Allescheria boydii, 1 Fusarium sp., 3 Neotestudina (Zopfia) rosatii, and 1 unidentified; 34 were actinomycetes: 24 Streptomyces somaliensis, 4 Actinomadura madurae, 3 A. pelletieri and 3 Nocardia spp. The patients delayed too long in consulting their doctors and health education is vital if am

BACKGROUND: Brain injuries caused by a tired bullet can range from headaches to severe brain injury and death. The question which poses a dilemma is whether extraction of retained bullets could decrease the late complications. This study aims to investigate the radiological findings, the neurological status of the patients, and different modalities of management for craniocerebral tired bullet injury.
METHOD: This study retrospectively reviewed 21 patients with a tired bullet injury to the brain who were admitted into our hospital over five years. All patients were assessed for the Glasgow ou

Neonatal hypothermia remains an important and preventable threat to newborn survival in low-resource settings. Somalia has a high neonatal mortality burden, while published evidence on admission hypothermia in Somali neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) remains limited. Regional evidence provides an important basis for understanding the problem. A systematic review of East African studies reported a pooled neonatal hypothermia prevalence of 57.2%, and a Kenyan tertiary hospital study found hypothermia in 73.7% of neonatal admissions. In Mogadishu, the challenge is shaped by home birth, gaps i

The historical significance of smallpox eradication from Somalia lies in the fact that the country was the last to record the last endemic smallpox case in the world. Before 1977 the programme was mismanaged. In the mid-1970s, the programme was plagued with concealment. Confirmation of smallpox outbreak in Mogadishu in September 1976 delayed global smallpox eradication. The Government maintained that there was no ongoing smallpox transmission in the country after the Mogadishu outbreak and frustrated independent attempts to verify its claim. In February 1977 the Government allowed World Health

To estimate the annual risk of tuberculosis (TB) infection (ARTI) in Somalia a tuberculin survey was conducted in February/March 2006. Stratified cluster sampling was carried out within the 18 regions and 101 randomly selected primary schools. Tuberculin testing was done in 10 680 grade 1 schoolchildren. Transverse tuberculin reaction size was measured 72 hours later. The number of children with a satisfactory test read was 10 364. The overall BCG coverage was 54%. Based on frequency distribution of tuberculin reaction sizes, the ARTI in Somalia was estimated at 2.2% (confidence interval: 1.5%

This study examined the relations among acculturation, domestic violence, and mental health in 62 married refugee women from Somalia. Refugees from Somalia constituted the largest group of refugees entering the United States in 2005, and little is known about the presence of domestic violence in this group. The results showed that women who reported greater ability to speak English also reported more experiences of partner psychological abuse and physical aggression. Experiences of more psychological abuse and physical aggressions also predicted more psychological distress. Implications for fu

PURPOSE: Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is a critical public health issue in Somalia, yet evidence regarding dietary practices remains limited. This study assessed the prevalence, geographical distribution, and determinants of Vitamin A-rich food consumption among children aged 6-23 months.
METHODS: Using 2020 Somali Demographic and Health Survey (SDHS) data (n=2,806), we employed two-level multilevel mixed-effects logistic regression to identify individual and community-level determinants. Spatial analysis, including Global Moran's I and Getis-Ord Gi* statistics, was performed to assess geograph

Cleft lip and/or palate deformities impose a significant burden on families, particularly in low-income communities. Somalia, characterized by an under-resourced healthcare system, encounters unique healthcare challenges from other regions. These challenges complicate the management and treatment of cleft lip and/or palate, highlighting the need for tailored healthcare strategies to address the specific needs of this population. However, a comprehensive understanding of the patterns and distribution of these deformities in Somalia remains limited. This retrospective cross-sectional study analy

OBJECTIVES: To synthesize global evidence and Somalia-specific reports on the role of community health workers (CHWs) in addressing health vulnerabilities within fragile and conflict-affected settings, and to argue that CHWs represent a primary care response essential for strengthening health system resilience in Somalia.
STUDY DESIGN: Narrative synthesis of published literature and selected reports.
METHODS: A targeted search of PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Google Scholar, and institutional repositories (WHO EMRO, World Bank, UNICEF Somalia) was conducted using combinations of terms including ("

BACKGROUND: Family planning is typically given less priority by policymakers, service providers, and users. Family planning is widely acknowledged as a women's and children's health-improving and life-saving intervention. Due to the dearth of accurate and up-to-date national data on Somali women of reproductive age's postpartum intention to use contraception, this research aimed to assess the factors affecting postpartum women's intention to use contraceptives in Mogadishu, Somalia.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis remains a major public health challenge in Somalia, where a fragile health system and reliance on private providers complicate care. Although Public-Private Partnerships are globally recognized for strengthening TB services, their role and implementation in Somalia's conflict-affected context are not well understood. This study aimed to explore the role, challenges, and opportunities of Public-Private Partnerships in delivering TB services in Somalia, generating evidence to inform policy and practice.
METHODS: A qualitative exploratory study was conducted in urban and

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a critical global public health threat, particularly in fragile and conflict-affected settings. In Somalia, decades of armed conflict, large-scale displacement, and limited healthcare infrastructure have created conditions conducive to the emergence and spread of resistant pathogens. Available evidence indicates alarmingly high resistance rates, including reports of up to 97% methicillin resistance among Staphylococcus aureus isolates and over 90% resistance in Escherichia coli to commonly used antibiotics. These findings suggest that many standard treatment r

BACKGROUND: Children worldwide can live lives free from various illnesses and disabilities due to vaccination. For instance, vaccination has eliminated smallpox, a deformative and frequently fatal illness that claimed an estimated 300 million lives in the twentieth century. However, due to a lack of access to immunization and other health services, 14.3 million infants in 2022 still did not receive their first dose of the Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (DTP) vaccine, and an additional 6.2 million received only a portion of the scheduled dose. This study aimed to assess prevalence and determinant

Zoonoses are likely to cause a substantial burden on both human and animal health systems in Somalia, given the close proximity between the pastoralist majority and their livestock. However, decades of instability leading to weak disease surveillance have meant that data on the burden of zoonoses is lacking. The aim of this scoping review was to assess and synthesize the available literature on the presence and burden of zoonoses in Somalia. We used keywords to search Web of Science for relevant publications. Studies were included if they contained relevant data on a zoonosis and were undertak

The first oral cholera vaccination (OCV) campaign in Somalia was implemented between March and October 2017. It was the first time the Ministry of Health had introduced and used OCV as part of the cholera prevention and control strategies. The Ministry of Health aimed to cover 1.1 million people ≥ 1 year with 2 doses of the OCV in 11 high-risk districts. Overall, 2-dose administrative OCV coverage in all targeted districts was 95.5%. Following the campaign, a random sample survey was conducted in 9 out of 11districts to evaluate coverage, awareness, reasons for non-vaccination, the water and s
