[Cervical spondylotic myelopathy: motor and somatosensory evoked potentials, clinical and radiological correlation].

Somatosensory and motor evoked potentials (EPs) have been recorded in 38 patients with cervical spondylosis, documented by MRI. All were symptomatic, 23 presented with myelopathy. Somatosensory evoked potentials were abnormal in 66p.cent as well as motor evoked potentials. The N13 potential, generated by the posterior dorsal horn of the cervical spinal cord, was abnormal in 63p.cent of patients and was the only disorder detected in 12p.cent. Together, somatosensory and motor evoked potentials were abnormal in 82p.cent of patients. There was no correlation between EPs findings and radiological

Slow repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation increases somatosensory high-frequency oscillations in humans.

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has been proposed as a possible treatment for psychiatric and neurological disorders characterized by focal brain excitability, such as major depression and action myoclonus. However, the mechanism of modulating excitability by rTMS is unclear. We examined the changes in high frequency oscillations (HFOs) of somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) before and after slow rTMS over the right primary somatosensory cortex (0.5 Hz, 50 pulses, 80% motor threshold intensity). The HFOs, which represent a localized activity of intracortical inhibitory i

Nondermatomal somatosensory deficits in chronic pain patients: are they really hysterical?

Patients with chronic pain disorders frequently show nondermatomal somatosensory deficits (NDSDs) that are considered to be functional. Typically, NDSDs show quadratomal or hemibody distribution ipsilateral to the areas of chronic pain. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition and the International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision, such functional somatosensory deficits are classified in the chapter "conversion disorder." Many publications also used the term "hysterical sensory loss." However, doubts are increasing about this one-sided psychi

Somatization, sensitization, and functional dyspepsia.

Functional dysepsia (FD) is defined as persistent or recurrent pain or discomfort centered in the upper abdomen without evidence of organic disease likely to explain the symptoms. Visceral hypersensitivity, motor dysfunction, and impaired gastric accommodation are found in some patients with FD, and psychological factors like chronic stress, attention and perception bias are also likely to play a part in the symptom formation. There is considerable overlap of non-specific symptoms like fatigue, headache, abdominal discomfort, muscle pain, and sleep disturbance in patients with different functi

Expression of synaptic proteins and development of dendritic spines in fetal and postnatal neocortex of the pig, the European wild boar Sus scrofa.

Synapse formation is a critical step in neuronal development. Current knowledge is largely based on altricial rodents where synapse formation and maturation proceed largely postnatally. In precocially born mammals such as guinea pig presynapse and spine formation start well before birth. Here, we analysed the developmental expression of proteins associated with synapse formation and maturation together with the development of basal dendritic spines of pyramidal neurons of visual and somatosensory cortex of the pig, an emerging translational model for human neurodegenerative disorders. A total

Abnormal sensory gating in patients with different types of focal dystonias.

BACKGROUND: Movement execution in healthy individuals increases the somatosensory temporal discrimination threshold. These changes are a result of mechanisms of sensory gating at the subcortical level. Although the somatosensory temporal discrimination threshold is abnormally increased in patients with focal dystonias, the effect of movement execution on somatosensory temporal discrimination in dystonic patients is unknown. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to determine whether somatosensory temporal discrimination threshold modulation induced by voluntary movement is normal in diff

Defective Somatosensory Inhibition and Plasticity Are Not Required to Develop Dystonia.

BACKGROUND: Dystonia may have different neuroanatomical substrates and pathophysiology. This is supported by studies on the motor system showing, for instance, that plasticity is abnormal in idiopathic dystonia, but not in dystonia secondary to basal ganglia lesions. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to test whether somatosensory inhibition and plasticity abnormalities reported in patients with idiopathic dystonia also occur in patients with dystonia caused by basal ganglia damage. METHODS: Ten patients with acquired dystonia as a result of basal ganglia lesions and 12 healthy control sub

A study of sensory dysregulation in children with tic disorders.

Disrupted somatosensory processing characterized by over- or under- responsiveness to environmental stimuli plays an important, yet often overlooked, role in typical development and is aberrant in various neurodevelopmental disorders. These dysfunctional somatosensory processes have been conceptualized as an entity termed somatosensory dysregulation (SMD). Since Tourette syndrome (TS) is a prototypical example of developmental psychopathological disorder, we hypothesised that SMD would be a feature found in children suffering from the disorder. Ninety-two subjects representing consecutive admi

Topographical features of the sensory-evoked responses in malformed brains.

To reveal the functional organization of the somatosensory area in the dysgenetic cortex, somatosensory-evoked potentials were examined in seven patients with congenital brain anomalies diagnosed by magnetic resonance imaging, including six patients in whom multichannel recordings over the scalp were used. In four patients with polymicrogyria/pachygyria and two with lissencephaly, the early cortical responses, frontal P20 and parietal N20, were absent in the cortex contralateral to the stimulated side. The first cortical response was a positive wave that appeared predominantly over the centrop

Cross-Modal Somatosensory Repetition Priming and Speech Processing.

BACKGROUND: Motor speech treatment approaches have been applied in both adults with aphasia and apraxia of speech and children with speech-sound disorders. Identifying links between motor speech intervention techniques and the modes of action (MoA) targeted would improve our understanding of how and why motor speech interventions achieve their effects, along with identifying its effective components. The current study focuses on identifying potential MoAs for a specific motor speech intervention technique. OBJECTIVES: We aim to demonstrate that somatosensory inputs can influence lexical proce

Neural basis of contagious itch and why some people are more prone to it.

Watching someone scratch himself can induce feelings of itchiness in the perceiver. This provides a unique opportunity to characterize the neural basis of subjective experiences of itch, independent of changes in peripheral inputs. In this study, we first established that the social contagion of itch is essentially a normative response (experienced by most people), and that the degree of contagion is related to trait differences in neuroticism (i.e., the tendency to experience negative emotions), but not to empathy. Watching video clips of someone scratching (relative to control videos of tapp

Reduced somatosensory hand representation in thalidomide-induced dysmelia as revealed by fMRI.

The concept of cerebral plasticity suggests that the hand representation in somatosensory cortex is abnormal in congenital malformation disorders. To investigate this issue we studied 11 subjects with different degrees of upper extremity dysmelia due to thalidomide embryopathy in comparison to 10 control subjects. In the affected subjects fingers are typically missing in radio-ulnar order beginning with the thumb. Haemodynamic responses to electrical stimulation of the radial-most and ulnar-most fingers were measured in each subject using functional magnetic resonance tomography. The size of t

[Early somesthetic evoked potentials and sensory deficits in thalamic and juxta-thalamic lesions. Clinical, electrophysiological and x-ray computed tomographic study in 70 patients].

Somatosensory Evoked Potentials (SEPs) have been recorded in 70 patients presenting a thalamic or capsular CT scan lesion. The loss of SEP parietal components confirmed the deafferentation of somatosensory cortex in infarctions of geniculothalamic or anterior choroidian arteries territory. SEPs were found to be normal in infarctions of other arterial territories, in agreement with the clinical evidence of normal somatosensory performances. In patients with haematomas, especially when located in the thalamus, there was no clear correlation between lesion sites and SEP data. Abnormal parietal re

Selective spatiotemporal patterns of glial activation and neuron loss in the sensory thalamocortical pathways of neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis 8 mice.

The neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses constitute the most common group of childhood neurodegenerative disorders. These devastating disorders still remain without effective treatment. The use of animal models has provided significant information about NCL pathogenesis, highlighting early glial activation and neuron loss in specific brain regions of affected animals. Here, we have characterized the timing and regional-specificity of the pathological events of CLN8 disease utilizing the Cln8 deficient mouse model, Cln8(mnd). We have studied the progression of neuron loss, astrocytosis and microglial

Feeling but not caring: empathic alteration in narcissistic men with high psychopathic traits.

Psychopathy is a personality disorder characterized by specific interpersonal-affective deficits and social deviance often marked by reduced empathy and decreased affective response to the suffering of others. However, recent findings in community samples suggest that the somatosensory resonance to other's pain measured with electroencephalography (EEG) is increased by psychopathic traits. This study aimed at comparing both the response to physical pain and the observation of pain being inflicted to another person in individuals with clinically significant psychopathic traits, namely patients

The impact of targeted cathodal transcranial direct current stimulation on reward circuitry and affect in Bipolar Disorder.

Bipolar Disorder is costly and debilitating, and many treatments have side effects. Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) is a well-tolerated neuromodulation technique that may be a useful treatment for Bipolar Disorder if targeted to neural regions implicated in the disorder. One potential region is the left ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (vlPFC), which shows abnormally elevated activity during reward expectancy in individuals with Bipolar Disorder. We used a counterbalanced repeated measures design to assess the impact of cathodal (inhibitory) tDCS over the left vlPFC on reward cir
