Robust but transient thermoregulatory responses to an acute thermal challenge in a free-living altricial songbird.

High temperatures are becoming the new normal as heat waves increase in frequency, intensity, and duration. Experimental evidence shows that acute heat triggers thermoregulatory mechanisms in songbirds, yet the persistence of these thermoregulatory responses remains unclear, particularly among altricial young that may be especially vulnerable. Here, we experimentally tested how a short-term heat challenge influences free-living nestling tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) in the wild. We conducted experiments at two key developmental stages: day 6, when nestlings experience their peak of post-

Adult Neurogenesis in the Songbird: Region-Specific Contributions of New Neurons to Behavioral Plasticity and Stability.

Our understanding of the role of new neurons in learning and encoding new information has been largely based on studies of new neurons in the mammalian dentate gyrus and olfactory bulb - brain regions that may be specialized for learning. Thus the role of new neurons in regions that serve other functions has yet to be fully explored. The song system provides a model for studying new neuron function in brain regions that contribute differently to song learning, song auditory discrimination, and song motor production. These regions subserve learning as well as long-term storage of previously lea

Feeder use predicts both acquisition and transmission of a contagious pathogen in a North American songbird.

Individual heterogeneity can influence the dynamics of infectious diseases in wildlife and humans alike. Thus, recent work has sought to identify behavioural characteristics that contribute disproportionately to individual variation in pathogen acquisition (super-receiving) or transmission (super-spreading). However, it remains unknown whether the same behaviours enhance both acquisition and transmission, a scenario likely to result in explosive epidemics. Here, we examined this possibility in an ecologically relevant host-pathogen system: house finches and their bacterial pathogen, Mycoplasma

Subtle stressors-Strong responses. Consistent negative effects of avian blood parasites on phenotypic and demographic traits across songbirds.

Stressors that subtly yet persistently deplete energetic resources-such as heat, pollutants or parasites-are well studied in laboratory and clinical settings, where their physiological effects are often well understood, yet their influence on phenotypic and demographic traits in free-living populations remains critically understudied. A prominent example is pathogens and parasites that cause sublethal infections, often considered as relatively benign, particularly in species adapted to their presence. However, parasite-induced effects on phenotypic and demographic traits are often inconsistent

COSPECIATION PATTERNS OF TWO GROUPS OF CHEWING LICE (INSECTA: PHTHIRAPTERA: ISCHNOCERA AND AMBLYCERA) INFESTING ASIAN SONGBIRDS (AVES: PASSERIFORMES).

Cospeciation has been observed multiple times between parasites and their hosts. Here we compare the phylogeny of 2 different groups of chewing lice (Phthiraptera), one known for being host specific (Amblycera: Myrsidea) and one known for including many generalist species (Ischnocera: Brueelia-complex, specifically Guimaraesiella and Priceiella) with that of their songbird hosts (Passeriformes), which are participants in mixed-species feeding flocks in South China. Using event- (Jane) and distance-based (ParaFit) analyses we found that both groups of lice have phylogenies that are more similar

Language-related Cntnap2 gene is differentially expressed in sexually dimorphic song nuclei essential for vocal learning in songbirds.

Multiple studies, involving distinct clinical populations, implicate contactin associated protein-like 2 (CNTNAP2) in aspects of language development and performance. While CNTNAP2 is broadly distributed in developing rodent brain, it shows a striking gradient of frontal cortical enrichment in developing human brain, consistent with a role in patterning circuits that subserve higher cognition and language. To test the hypothesis that CNTNAP2 may be important for learned vocal communication in additional species, we employed in situ hybridization to characterize transcript distribution in the z

Miniaturized light-level geolocators provide novel insight into the migration ecology of an endangered songbird.

Understanding songbird movements throughout their annual cycles is critical to inform conservation planning decisions and management priorities for migratory species. From 2017 to 2020, we attached miniaturized light-level geolocators to 309 male golden-cheeked warblers (Setophaga chrysoparia; hereafter warbler) at five study sites located across the species’ breeding range in Texas. From 2018 to 2021, we recovered data from 61 geolocators and used these data to determine the locations and timing of warbler movements during their non-breeding seasons and to quantify migratory connectivity and

Context-dependent prevalence of neonicotinoid insecticides in a predatory songbird, the loggerhead shrike (Lanius ludovicianus).

Neonicotinoids are a class of widely used insecticides typically considered safe for non-target organisms, but numerous studies have documented adverse effects across diverse taxa. Despite this, documentation of neonicotinoid residues in vertebrates and their subsequent impacts, especially at higher trophic levels, remains limited. We investigated the prevalence and concentration of neonicotinoid residues in the blood of loggerhead shrikes (Lanius ludovicianus), declining predatory songbirds, occupying agricultural and non-agricultural regions. We also evaluated associations between neonicotin

Seed preference is only weakly linked to seed-type-specific feeding performance in a songbird.

The dehusking of seeds by granivorous songbirds is a complex process that requires fast, coordinated and sensory-feedback-controlled movements of beak and tongue. Hence, efficient seed handling requires a high degree of sensorimotoric skill and behavioural flexibility, since seeds vary considerably in size, shape and husk structure. To deal with this variability, individuals might specialise on specific seed types, which could result in greater seed handling efficiency of the preferred seed type, but lower efficiency for other seed types. To test this, we assessed seed preferences of canaries

Short-term mercury exposure disrupts muscular and hepatic lipid metabolism in a migrant songbird.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a global pollutant that can cause metabolic disruptions in animals and thereby potentially compromise the energetic capacity of birds for long-distance migration, but its effects on avian lipid metabolism pathways that support endurance flight and stopover refueling have never been studied. We tested the effects of short-term (14-d), environmentally relevant (0.5 ppm) dietary MeHg exposure on lipid metabolism markers in the pectoralis and livers of yellow-rumped warblers (Setophaga coronata) that were found in a previous study to have poorer flight endurance in a wind t

Molecular changes associated with migratory departure from wintering areas in obligate songbird migrants.

Day length regulates the development of spring migratory and subsequent reproductive phenotypes in avian migrants. This study used molecular approaches, and compared mRNA and proteome-wide expression in captive redheaded buntings that were photostimulated under long-day (LD) conditions for 4 days (early stimulated, LD-eS) or for ∼3 weeks until each bird had shown 4 successive nights of Zugunruhe (stimulated, LD-S); controls were maintained under short days. After ∼3 weeks of LD, photostimulated indices of the migratory preparedness (fattening, weight gain and Zugunruhe) were paralleled with up

fMRI Reveals a Novel Region for Evaluating Acoustic Information for Mate Choice in a Female Songbird.

Selection of sexual partners is among the most critical decisions that individuals make and is therefore strongly shaped by evolution. In social species, where communication signals can convey substantial information about the identity, state, or quality of the signaler, accurate interpretation of communication signals for mate choice is crucial. Despite the importance of social information processing, to date, relatively little is known about the neurobiological mechanisms that contribute to sexual decision making and preferences. In this study, we used a combination of whole-brain functional

Rhythmic syllable-related activity in a songbird motor thalamic nucleus necessary for learned vocalizations.

Birdsong is a complex behavior that exhibits hierarchical organization. While the representation of singing behavior and its hierarchical organization has been studied in some detail in avian cortical premotor circuits, our understanding of the role of the thalamus in adult birdsong is incomplete. Using a combination of behavioral and electrophysiological studies, we seek to expand on earlier work showing that the thalamic nucleus Uvaeformis (Uva) is necessary for the production of stereotyped, adult song in zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata). We confirm that complete bilateral lesions of Uva a

Mobilization of mercury from lean tissues during simulated migratory fasting in a model songbird.

The pollutant methylmercury accumulates within lean tissues of birds and other animals. Migrating birds catabolize substantial amounts of lean tissue during flight which may mobilize methylmercury and increase circulating levels of this neurotoxin. As a model for a migrating songbird, we fasted zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) that had been dosed with 0.0, 0.1, and 0.6 parts per million (ppm) dietary methylmercury and measured changes in blood total mercury concentrations (THg) in relation to reductions in lean mass. Birds lost 6-16% of their lean mass during the fast, and THg increased an

A higher sensory brain region is involved in reversing reinforcement-induced vocal changes in a songbird.

Many animals exhibit flexible behaviors that they can adjust to increase reward or avoid harm (learning by positive or aversive reinforcement). But what neural mechanisms allow them to restore their original behavior (motor program) after reinforcement is withdrawn? One possibility is that motor restoration relies on brain areas that have a role in memorization but no role in either motor production or in sensory processing relevant for expressing the behavior and its refinement. We investigated the role of a higher auditory brain area in the songbird for modifying and restoring the stereotype

Ketocarotenoid circulation, but not retinal carotenoid accumulation, is linked to eye disease status in a wild songbird.

Pathogenic or parasitic infections pose numerous physiological challenges to organisms. Carotenoid pigments have often been used as biomarkers of disease state and impact because they integrate multiple aspects of an individual's condition and nutritional and health state. Some diseases are known to influence carotenoid uptake from food (e.g. coccidiosis) and carotenoid use (e.g. as antioxidants/immunostimulants in the body, or for sexually attractive coloration), but there is relatively little information in animals about how different types of carotenoids from different tissue sources may be

Response of a free-flying songbird to an experimental shift of the light polarization pattern around sunset.

The magnetic field, the sun, the stars and the polarization pattern of visible light during twilight are important cues for orientation in nocturnally migrating songbirds. As these cues change with time and location on Earth, the polarization pattern was put forward as a likely key reference system calibrating the other compass systems. Whether this applies generally to migratory birds is, however, controversially discussed. We used an experimental approach in free-flying birds to study the role of polarization for their departure direction in autumn. Experimental birds experienced a 90 deg sh

Potential roles for GNIH and GNRH-II in reproductive axis regulation of an opportunistically breeding songbird.

The ability to breed at any time of year enables opportunistically breeding species to respond to good conditions whenever they occur. We investigate the neuroendocrine basis for this relatively unusual reproductive pattern in the avian world. One proposed mechanism for year-round breeding ability is tonic activation of gonadotropin-releasing hormone-I (GnRH-I) production that is flexibly modified by gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone (GnIH) production during unfavorable conditions. GnIH could inhibit GnRH secretion from the hypothalamus and/or inhibit GnRH action on the anterior pituitary gland.

Acute stress induces a rapid increase of testosterone in a songbird: implications for plasma testosterone sampling.

Testosterone (T) and glucocorticoids, such as corticosterone, have both been shown to be important for the way vertebrates in general, and birds specifically, react to their immediate environment. For both corticosterone and T, many sources of variation in plasma levels have been demonstrated. Interestingly, a small number of studies on bird species have indicated that acute stress can have a positive effect on plasma T levels, analogous to what has been observed for plasma corticosterone levels. Using captive male European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris), we provide the first evidence in songbir

Contributions of tutor and bird's own song experience to neural selectivity in the songbird anterior forebrain.

Auditory neurons of the anterior forebrain (AF) of zebra finches become selective for song during song learning. In adults, these neurons respond more to the bird's own song (BOS) than to the songs of other zebra finches (conspecifics) or BOS played in reverse. In contrast, AF neurons from young birds (30 d) respond equally well to all song stimuli. AF selectivity develops rapidly during song learning, appearing in 60-d-old birds. At this age, many neurons also respond equally well to BOS and tutor song. These similar neural responses to BOS and tutor song might reflect contributions from both
