Spike-timing codes enhance the representation of multiple simultaneous sound-localization cues in the inferior colliculus.

To preserve multiple streams of independent information that converge onto a neuron, the information must be re-represented more efficiently in the neural response. Here we analyze the increase in the representational capacity of spike timing over rate codes using sound localization cues as an example. The inferior colliculus receives convergent input from multiple auditory brainstem nuclei, including sound localization information such as interaural level differences (ILDs), interaural timing differences (ITDs), and spectral cues. Virtual space techniques were used to create stimulus sets var

Intrinsic properties of avian interaural level difference sound localizing neurons.

Intrinsic properties of neurons are one major determinant for how neurons respond to their synaptic inputs and shape their outputs in neural circuits. Here, we studied the intrinsic properties of neurons in the chicken posterior portion of the dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus (LLDp), the first interaural level difference (ILD) encoder of the avian auditory pathway. Using whole-cell recordings in brain slices, we revealed that the LLDp is composed of a heterogeneous neuron population based on their firing patterns. LLDp neurons were broadly classified as either phasic or tonic firing neu

Synaptic Inhibition in Avian Interaural Level Difference Sound Localizing Neurons.

Synaptic inhibition plays a fundamental role in the neural computation of the interaural level difference (ILD), an important cue for the localization of high-frequency sound. Here, we studied the inhibitory synaptic currents in the chicken posterior portion of the dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus (LLDp), the first binaural level difference encoder of the avian auditory pathway. Using whole-cell recordings in brain slices, we provide the first evidence confirming a monosynaptic inhibition driven by direct electrical and chemical stimulation of the contralateral LLDp, establishing the re

Robustness of neuronal tuning to binaural sound localization cues against age-related loss of inhibitory synaptic inputs.

Sound localization relies on minute differences in the timing and intensity of sound arriving at both ears. Neurons of the lateral superior olive (LSO) in the brainstem process these interaural disparities by precisely detecting excitatory and inhibitory synaptic inputs. Aging generally induces selective loss of inhibitory synaptic transmission along the entire auditory pathways, including the reduction of inhibitory afferents to LSO. Electrophysiological recordings in animals, however, reported only minor functional changes in aged LSO. The perplexing discrepancy between anatomical and physio

Improved interaural timing of acoustic nerve stimulation affects sound localization in single-sided deaf cochlear implant users.

The main impairment associated with single-sided deafness (SSD) is the loss of binaural hearing. Currently, the most effective treatment to compensate for this deficit is to supply patients suffering from SSD with a cochlear implant (CI) in the deaf ear. With this approach binaural hearing abilities can be restored to a certain extent, which is expressed in an improvement in such patients with regard to sound source localization and speech comprehension in noise after receipt of a CI. However, binaural performance of these listeners does not reach the level of normal-hearing listeners. One of

The effect of multimicrophone noise reduction systems on sound source localization by users of binaural hearing aids.

This paper evaluates the influence of three multimicrophone noise reduction algorithms on the ability to localize sound sources. Two recently developed noise reduction techniques for binaural hearing aids were evaluated, namely, the binaural multichannel Wiener filter (MWF) and the binaural multichannel Wiener filter with partial noise estimate (MWF-N), together with a dual-monaural adaptive directional microphone (ADM), which is a widely used noise reduction approach in commercial hearing aids. The influence of the different algorithms on perceived sound source localization and their noise re

Fiber Track Length Gradients in the Avian Sound Localization Circuit Require Conduction Velocity Gradients to Maintain Isochronicity.

The chicken brainstem sound localization neural network exhibits a case where fiber length varies continuously across the fiber arrays connecting n. magnocellularis and n. laminaris. Detailed morphometric measurements were taken to quantify these length gradients. For both ipsilateral and contralateral projections, the path lengths connecting the caudal low-frequency segments are longer than those at the rostral high-frequency end, with a linear path length gradient between them. The length and the length gradient of the contralateral projection increase from hatchling to 2-4 weeks. Synchronou

Sound Localization and Lateralization by Bilateral Bone Conduction Devices, Middle Ear Implants, and Cartilage Conduction Hearing Aids.

Sound localization in daily life is one of the important functions of binaural hearing. Bilateral bone conduction devices (BCDs), middle ear implants, and cartilage conduction hearing aids have been often applied for patients with conductive hearing loss (CHL) or mixed hearing loss, for example, resulting from bilateral microtia and aural atresia. In this review, factors affecting the accuracy of sound localization with bilateral BCDs, middle ear implants, and cartilage conduction hearing aids were classified into four categories: (1) types of device, (2) experimental conditions, (3) participa

Head shadow enhancement with low-frequency beamforming improves sound localization and speech perception for simulated bimodal listeners.

Many hearing-impaired listeners struggle to localize sounds due to poor availability of binaural cues. Listeners with a cochlear implant and a contralateral hearing aid - so-called bimodal listeners - are amongst the worst performers, as both interaural time and level differences are poorly transmitted. We present a new method to enhance head shadow in the low frequencies. Head shadow enhancement is achieved with a fixed beamformer with contralateral attenuation in each ear. The method results in interaural level differences which vary monotonically with angle. It also improves low-frequency s

Lung sound analysis helps localize airway inflammation in patients with bronchial asthma.

PURPOSE: Airway inflammation can be detected by lung sound analysis (LSA) at a single point in the posterior lower lung field. We performed LSA at 7 points to examine whether the technique could identify the location of airway inflammation in patients with asthma. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Breath sounds were recorded at 7 points on the body surface of 22 asthmatic subjects. Inspiration sound pressure level (ISPL), expiration sound pressure level (ESPL), and the expiration-to-inspiration sound pressure ratio (E/I) were calculated in 6 frequency bands. The data were analyzed for potential correlati

Physics-informed neural operators for the in situ characterization of locally reacting sound absorbersa).

Accurate knowledge of acoustic surface admittance or impedance is essential for reliable wave-based simulations, yet its in situ estimation remains challenging due to noise, model inaccuracies, and restrictive assumptions of conventional methods. This work presents a physics-informed neural operator approach for estimating frequency-dependent surface admittance directly from near-field measurements of sound pressure and particle velocity. A deep operator network is employed to learn the mapping from measurement data, spatial coordinates, and frequency to acoustic field quantities, while simult

Learning nonnative speech sounds changes local encoding in the adult human cortex.

Adults can learn to identify nonnative speech sounds with training, albeit with substantial variability in learning behavior. Increases in behavioral accuracy are associated with increased separability for sound representations in cortical speech areas. However, it remains unclear whether individual auditory neural populations all show the same types of changes with learning, or whether there are heterogeneous encoding patterns. Here, we used high-resolution direct neural recordings to examine local population response patterns, while native English listeners learned to recognize unfamiliar vo

Local mechanisms for loud sound-enhanced aminoglycoside entry into outer hair cells.

Loud sound exposure exacerbates aminoglycoside ototoxicity, increasing the risk of permanent hearing loss and degrading the quality of life in affected individuals. We previously reported that loud sound exposure induces temporary threshold shifts (TTS) and enhances uptake of aminoglycosides, like gentamicin, by cochlear outer hair cells (OHCs). Here, we explore mechanisms by which loud sound exposure and TTS could increase aminoglycoside uptake by OHCs that may underlie this form of ototoxic synergy. Mice were exposed to loud sound levels to induce TTS, and received fluorescently-tagged genta

Fractional delay estimation for blind source separation and localization of temporomandibular joint sounds.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) sound sources are generated from the two joints connecting the lower jaw to the temporal bone. Such sounds are important diagnostic signs in patients suffering from temporomandibular disorder (TMD). In this study, we address the problem of source separation of the TMJ sounds. In particular, we examine patients with only one TMJ generating "clicks". Thereafter, we consider the TMJ sounds recorded from the two auditory canals as mixtures of clicks from the TMD joint and the noise produced by the other healthy/normal TMJ. We next exploit the statistical nonstationary

Comparing sound localization and speech-in-noise in unilateral, bilateral, single-sided deaf, and bimodal cochlear implant users.

Cochlear implant users do not experience spatial hearing with the same accuracy or acuity as typical hearing listeners. Two standard measures of spatial hearing are sound localization error and speech reception thresholds (SRTs) in spatially separated noise. While sound localization requires a complicated setup, SRTs may be measured with fewer loudspeakers and less testing time. If a predictive relationship between sound localization error and SRTs can be measured, then the spatial hearing abilities of cochlear implant users may be quickly assessed by measuring one task or the other. To test t
