A micro-machined piezoelectric flexural-mode hydrophone with air backing: a hydrostatic pressure-balancing mechanism for integrity preservation.

Although an air-backed thin plate is an effective sound receiver structure, it is easily damaged via pressure unbalance caused by external hydrostatic pressure. To overcome this difficulty, a simple pressure-balancing module is proposed. Despite its small size and relative simplicity, with proper design and operation, micro-channel structure provides a solution to the pressure-balancing problem. If the channel size is sufficiently small, the gas-liquid interface may move back and forth without breach by the hydrostatic pressure since the surface tension can retain the interface surface continu

Method for automatic detection of wheezing in lung sounds.

The present report describes the development of a technique for automatic wheezing recognition in digitally recorded lung sounds. This method is based on the extraction and processing of spectral information from the respiratory cycle and the use of these data for user feedback and automatic recognition. The respiratory cycle is first pre-processed, in order to normalize its spectral information, and its spectrogram is then computed. After this procedure, the spectrogram image is processed by a two-dimensional convolution filter and a half-threshold in order to increase the contrast and isolat

[Acoustic analysis of nocturnal bronchial obstruction].

Patients with obstructive pulmonary disease also have respiratory problems in sleep. The continuous acoustic lung sound detection together with a cardiorespiratory polysomnography allows a synchronous registration of bronchial obstruction as well as vigilance and respiratory parameters in sleep.A total of 20 patients (9 male and 11 female) with known obstructive airway disease and evident diurnal bronchial obstruction were investigated. We did a monitoring in all patients with a nocturnal continuous acoustic lung sound detection together with a cardiorespiratory polysomnography. The mean age w

Cry analysis in infants with infectious and congenital disorders of the larynx.

Thirty induced pain cries from the same number of infants with infectious or congenital disorders of the larynx (infectious laryngitis, laryngomalacia, paresis of the recurrent nerve and subglottic stricture) have been analyzed by means of sound spectrography. For each cry 21 phonetic features have been evaluated. This cry material was then compared with 120 pain cries from healthy infants. In the pathological group a significant increase could be noted in the occurrence of the following cry attributes: second pause, abnormal melody types (rising, falling-rising, flat and no melody types), ins

Fused Audio Instance and Representation for Respiratory Disease Detection.

Audio-based classification techniques for body sounds have long been studied to aid in the diagnosis of respiratory diseases. While most research is centered on the use of coughs as the main acoustic biomarker, other body sounds also have the potential to detect respiratory diseases. Recent studies on the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have suggested that breath and speech sounds, in addition to cough, correlate with the disease. Our study proposes fused audio instance and representation (FAIR) as a method for respiratory disease detection. FAIR relies on constructing a joint feature vect

Comparison of snoring sounds between natural and drug-induced sleep recorded using a smartphone.

OBJECTIVES: Snoring is an important clinical feature of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and recent studies suggest that the acoustic quality of snoring sounds is markedly different in drug-induced sleep compared with natural sleep. However, considering differences in sound recording methods and analysis parameters, further studies are required. This study explored whether acoustic analysis of drug-induced sleep is useful as a screening test that reflects the characteristics of natural sleep in snoring patients. SUBJECTS AND MATERIALS: The snoring sounds of 30 male subjects (mean age=41.8years)

Estimation of Respiratory Rates Using the Built-in Microphone of a Smartphone or Headset.

This paper proposes accurate respiratory rate estimation using nasal breath sound recordings from a smartphone. Specifically, the proposed method detects nasal airflow using a built-in smartphone microphone or a headset microphone placed underneath the nose. In addition, we also examined if tracheal breath sounds recorded by the built-in microphone of a smartphone placed on the paralaryngeal space can also be used to estimate different respiratory rates ranging from as low as 6 breaths/min to as high as 90 breaths/min. The true breathing rates were measured using inductance plethysmography ban

Acoustic thoracic images for transmitted glottal sounds.

Sound transmission has been of interest for many years in an attempt to study the structure of the lung and different researches have shown that artificial sounds produce a lateralization of sound information at the thoracic surface. Most of these studies have use non-simultaneous recording and input sounds introduced at the mouth or other thoracic points. In this paper, we present acoustic thoracic images, for transmitted glottal sounds, formed by a multichannel system with an array of 5x5 microphones. The study was done using 4 healthy subjects and 4 subjects having diffuse interstitial pneu

Effect of positive end-expiratory pressure on acoustic wave propagation in experimental porcine lung injury.

To evaluate the effect of positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) on sound propagation through injured lungs, we injected a multifrequency broad-band sound signal into the airway of eight anesthetized, intubated and mechanically ventilated pigs, while recording transmitted sound at three locations bilaterally on the chest wall. Oleic acid injections effected a severe pulmonary oedema predominately in the dependent lung regions, with an average increase in venous admixture from 19 ± 15 to 59 ± 14% (P < 0.001), and a reduction in dynamic respiratory system compliance from 34 ± 7 to 14 ± 4 ml cmH

Estimating the parameters of audible clinical percussion signals by fitting exponentially damped harmonics.

Used for centuries in the clinical practice, audible percussion is a method of eliciting sounds by tapping various areas of the human body either by finger tips or by a percussion hammer. Despite its advantages, pulmonary diagnostics by percussion is still highly subjective, depends on the physician's skills, and requires quiet surroundings. Automation of this well-established technique could help amplify its existing merits while removing the above drawbacks. In this work, clinical percussion signals from normal volunteers are decomposed into a sum of exponentially damped sinusoids (EDS) whos

Transmission of crackles in patients with interstitial pulmonary fibrosis, congestive heart failure, and pneumonia.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with interstitial pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) often have diffusely abnormal findings on chest radiographs, making it difficult to detect evidence of superimposed congestive heart failure (CHF) or pneumonia. The goal of this study was to determine whether the crackles of IPF differed in their transmission and frequency from crackles of CHF and pneumonia in the hope of improving diagnosis and monitoring of these patients. METHODS: A multichannel lung sound analyzer was used to collect 20-s samples of sound from 25 patients with pneumonia, 17 patients with CHF, and 19 patients w

Variational mode decomposition based prediction model for cough sounds using Xception-GRU classifier.

Cough is a popular pre-screening tool for the most respiratory disease diagnoses. Discriminating the abnormal cough from normal one by human ear is however challenging as minute pathological changes in auditory pattern go unnoticed and computer assistance is sought for the diagnosis. This study aims at developing a prediction model by analyzing the different frequency components of the signal in multiple dimensions. As a first step, the cough sounds are decomposed using variational mode decomposition (VMD) for five intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) followed by visualizing every IMF in bark frequ

Anthropogenic noise impairs cooperation in bottlenose dolphins.

Understanding the impact of human disturbance on wildlife populations is of societal importance,1 with anthropogenic noise known to impact a range of taxa, including mammals,2 birds,3 fish,4 and invertebrates.5 While animals are known to use acoustic and other behavioral mechanisms to compensate for increasing noise at the individual level, our understanding of how noise impacts social animals working together remains limited. Here, we investigated the effect of noise on coordination between two bottlenose dolphins performing a cooperative task. We previously demonstrated that the dolphin dyad

Evaluation of the noise exposure of symphonic orchestra musicians.

For musicians, the impact of noise exposure is not yet fully characterized. Some inconsistencies can be found in the methodology used to evaluate noise exposure. This study aims to analyze the noise exposure of musicians in a symphonic orchestra to understand their risk for hearing loss, applying the methodology proposed by ISO 9612:2009. Noise levels were monitored among musicians during the rehearsal of eight different repertoires. Test subjects were selected according to their instrument and position in the orchestra. Participants wore noise dosimeters throughout the rehearsals. A sound met

Humpback whale song on the Southern Ocean feeding grounds: implications for cultural transmission.

Male humpback whales produce a long, complex, and stereotyped song on low-latitude breeding grounds; they also sing while migrating to and from these locations, and occasionally in high-latitude summer feeding areas. All males in a population sing the current version of the constantly evolving display and, within an ocean basin, populations sing similar songs; however, this sharing can be complex. In the western and central South Pacific region there is repeated cultural transmission of song types from eastern Australia to other populations eastward. Song sharing is hypothesized to occur throu

Nonlinearities in mating sounds of American crocodiles.

We use nonlinear time series analysis methods to analyze the dynamics of the sound-producing apparatus of the American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus). We capture its dynamics by analyzing a recording of the singing activity during mating time. First, we reconstruct the phase space from the sound recording and thereby reveal that the attractor needs no less than five degrees of freedom to fully evolve in the embedding space, which suggests that a rather complex nonlinear dynamics underlies its existence. Prior to investigating the dynamics more precisely, we test whether the reconstructed attrac

[Vocal physiopathology].

Cordectomies usually result in alteration of the glottic sphincter which in turn effects the activity of the entire larynx bringing about different types of dysphonia according to the resulting scarring pattern in the glottic floor and to the functional recompensation made by the cordectomized patients themselves. Today, study of those anatomic dynamics which determine voice typology in cordectomized patients is possible thanks to various means: synthesis of data obtained from psycho-perspective analyses of the vocal product, video-fiber-laryngoscopic observation of the vocal tract and spectro

The Irrintzi and Other Folk Cries High Pich and Loud Emission. Can We Learn Something?

INTRODUCTION: In various cultures there are vocal sounds and cries associated with the folk tradition. All these cries are emitted in a single breath, have a high frequency and are loud. They are consequently audible over long distances and cut through other vocal expressions or other sounds generated by instruments. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this work is to acoustically analyze some of these folkloric cries and study elements common to all of them. METHODS: In this study, Irrintzi, Aturuxo, Tzagrit, ululation Darfur and Kurava cries were subjected to descriptive acoustic spectrographic a
