Space Flight-Associated Neuroocular Syndrome, Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension, and Pseudotumor Cerebri: Phenotypic Descriptions, Pathogenesis, and Hydrodynamics.

Recent data from astronauts who have returned to Earth from a long-duration space flight have unequivocally distinguished spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) from idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) and pseudotumor cerebri (PTC). We review the semiology and pathogenesis of these three entities, noting that optic disc edema is what unites them, and this where the similarities between SANS and IIH/PTC end. We distinguish between PTC and IIH and between SANS and IIH/PTC and review the medical and surgical therapy of IIH/PTC. The key to understanding the phenomenon of optic

Optimization of Exercise Countermeasures for Human Space Flight: Operational Considerations for Concurrent Strength and Aerobic Training.

The physiological challenges presented by space flight and in microgravity (μG) environments are well documented. μG environments can result in declines muscle mass, contractile strength, and functional capabilities. Previous work has focused on exercise countermeasures designed to attenuate the negative effects of μG on skeletal muscle structure, function, and contractile strength and aerobic fitness parameters. Exposure to μG environments influences both strength and aerobic type physical qualities. As such, the current exercise recommendations for those experiencing μG involve a combination

Bone height measurements around a dental implant after a 6-month space flight: a case report.

PURPOSE: In space, astronauts are subject to microgravity, which reduces skeletal loading and osteoblast function and can cause bone resorption and a decrease in bone density. No known research to date has studied the effect of microgravity on dental implants. This study evaluated peri-implant bone changes around a dental implant placed in a French astronaut who spent 6 months in Russia's Mir Space Station. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Measurements were performed by 2 examiners before the flight (baseline), after the flight (stage 1), and following a recovery period (stage 2). Standardized periapic

Effects of space flight on the immunohistochemical demonstration of connexin 26 and connexin 43 in the postpartum uterus of rats.

The effect of space flight in a National Aeronautics and Space Administration shuttle was studied in pregnant rats. Rats were launched on day 11 of gestation and recovered on day 20 of gestation. Pregnancy was allowed to proceed to term and rats delivered vaginally on days 22-23, although flight animals required more labour contractions to complete the delivery process. Pups were placed with foster dams and connexin 26 and 43 were examined in the uterus of flight animals approximately 3 h after delivery. Space flight did not affect uterine connexin 26, localized primarily in epithelial cells o

Male and female characteristics in vestibular testing: a step toward the selection of the best participants for space flight.

Vestibular disturbances in connection with space flight were reported by a majority of participating astronauts and cosmonauts. These include motion sickness symptoms in the first few days of the space flight, as well as standing, gait and orientation disturbances after the return to Earth. The Aerospace Medical Community has been trying to select those people that are particularly adapted to the above stresses or that can be further adapted through training programs. As the circle of selectees extends to women, the problem arises as to whether differences between men and women exist under the

Preliminary report on the biological effects of space flight on the producing strain of a new immunosuppressant, Kanglemycin C.

Kanglemycin C (K-C) is a new immunosuppressant isolated from the culture broth of Nocardia mediterranei var. kanglensis 1747-64. To improve the productivity of K-C and to study the biological effects of space flight on its producing strain, spores from five K-C producing strains (U-10, U-15, U-7, M-13, gamma-33) mutated from the wild strain N. mediterranei var. kanglensis 1747-64 were carried into space by an unmanned spaceship, "Shenzhou III" (Divine Vessel III) on March 25, 2002. Comparatively, the strain U-7 was the highest K-C producing strain among the above five starting strains when cul

A retrospective study of promethazine and its failure to produce the expected incidence of sedation during space flight.

Since March 1989, intramuscular (IM) promethazine has been successfully used to treat the symptoms of space motion sickness. The incidence of sedation associated with promethazine administration on the ground is large and may result in operational impact. The authors undertook a retrospective study to quantify the incidence of sedation from promethazine use during Space Shuttle flights. Crew medical debriefings from 14 shuttle missions were reviewed for crew members who had been treated with IM promethazine and their corresponding symptoms were identified. Twenty-one crew members received IM p

[Effects of weightlessness on osseous tissue of the rat after a space flight of 5 days (Cosmos 1514)].

Five pregnant female growing rats have been orbited for five days aboard the Cosmos 1514 soviet biological satellite. They were compared to five female rats kept in vivarium and five female conditioned rats in synchronised way. Histomorphometric studies were performed in order to investigate: 1. The early effects of weightlessness on the bone mass in loading (tibiae and femur) and unloading bones (thoracic and lumbar vertebrae). 2. The changes of osteoblastic and osteoclastic activities. A short exposure does not induce changes in the bone mass and the inner structure of loading and unloading

Physiological consequences of space flight, including abnormal bone metabolism, space radiation injury, and circadian clock dysregulation: Implications of melatonin use and regulation as a countermeasure.

Exposure to the space environment induces a number of pathophysiological outcomes in astronauts, including bone demineralization, sleep disorders, circadian clock dysregulation, cardiovascular and metabolic dysfunction, and reduced immune system function. A recent report describing experiments aboard the Space Shuttle mission, STS-132, showed that the level of melatonin, a hormone that provides the biochemical signal of darkness, was decreased during microgravity in an in vitro culture model. Additionally, abnormal lighting conditions in outer space, such as low light intensity in orbital spac

Histoarchitecture of stromal collagen fibers in gastrointestinal hollow organs of mice after a 30-day space flight.

The digestive organs are highly sensitive to the influence of orbital flight factors and can limit the professional activities of crew members aboard the International Space Station. Connective tissue, as a system-forming matrix of the integrative-buffer metabolic environment, is of particular relevance in space biomedicine, ensuring the functioning of internal organs under an altered gravitational stimulus. However, the adaptive mechanisms of the fibrous extracellular matrix of the gastric and intestinal connective tissue have not been fully investigated under prolonged microgravity weightles

Cytogenetic studies of blood lymphocytes from cosmonauts after long-term space flights on Mir station.

Long-term space missions may increase risks of unfavorable consequences for cosmonauts as a result of radiation effects. This paper presents results of a study of cytogenetic damage in cosmonauts' peripheral blood lymphocytes induced by space radiation. Cultivation of lymphocytes and analysis of chromosomal aberrations were made according to generally accepted methods. It is shown that the yields of dicentrics and centric rings scored after long-term space flights are considerably higher than those scored prior to the flights. An attempt was made to assess individual doses received by cosmonau

[Changes in the ultrastructure of striated muscles and neuromuscular synapses of rats under the effects of a 13-day space flight].

The ultrastructure of myofibers and neuromuscular synapses (NMS) of soleus, gastrocnemius and diaphragmatic muscles of rats flown on Cosmos biosatellite for 13 days was examined two days after landing. The myofibers showed atrophic and dystrophic changes that were different in various muscles: they were advanced in m. soleus, moderate in m. gastrocnemius and weak in the diaphragm. The greatest changes of NMS were seen in m. soleus, where the surface area of synaptic contacts decreased due to partial or total destruction of presynaptic structures. In m. gastrocnemius, structural changes in the

Gene expression in autonomic areas of the medulla and the central nucleus of the amygdala in rats during and after space flight.

During space flight astronauts show vestibular-related changes in balance, eye movements, and spontaneous and reflex control of cardiovascular, respiratory and gastrointestinal function, sometimes associated with space motion sickness. These symptoms undergo compensation over time. Here we used changes in the expression of two immediate-early gene (IEG) products to identify cellular and molecular changes occurring in autonomic brainstem regions of adult male albino rats killed at different times during the Neurolab Space Mission (STS-90). Both direct effects of gravitational changes, as well a

Dual Function Materials Enabling Human Space Flight: Carbon Dioxide Capture and Conversion for Life Support on Crewed Missions.

Carbon dioxide removal is important for keeping astronauts alive in space, where CO2 can accumulate to harmful or even deadly levels in cabin air if untreated. Additionally, on Earth, CO2 direct air capture is an important technology for reversing the harmful impacts of rising anthropogenic atmospheric CO2 concentrations. In both scenarios, captured CO2 needs to be dealt with, potentially via reaction into a more desirable final product such as renewable hydrocarbons or water. One potential solution is utilizing combined solid sorbents and catalysts in one material, known as dual function mate

Accessing Higher Order Mathieu Space Stability Zones to Narrow Isolation Widths Using Digital Quadrupole Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry.

Digital quadrupoles are driven with rectangular RF waveforms and, through duty cycle control, can access higher-order Mathieu space stability zones (HZs) using comparatively low voltages. Analytically, accessing these zones remains attractive as HZs exhibit higher resolving powers ((m/z)/(Δm/z)) compared to the conventional quadrupole operation in zone (1,1). Presented here is a modification of a commercial quadrupole time-of-flight (Q-TOF) equipped with a low-voltage digital waveform driver to navigate the filtering quadrupole in the HZs. We demonstrate that a digital quadrupole operating in

Space-Flight- and Microgravity-Dependent Alteration of Mast Cell Population and Protease Expression in Digestive Organs of Mongolian Gerbils.

Mast cell (MC)-specific proteases are of particular interest for space biology and medicine due to their biological activity in regulating targets of a specific tissue microenvironment. MC tryptase and chymase obtain the ability to remodel connective tissue through direct and indirect mechanisms. Yet, MC-specific protease expression under space flight conditions has not been adequately investigated. Using immunohistochemical stainings, we analyzed in this study the protease profile of the jejunal, gastric, and hepatic MC populations in three groups of Mongolian gerbils-vivarium control, synchr
