The unique characteristics of the deep space environment, microgravity, cosmic radiation, and extreme temperature fluctuations, are emerging as major driving forces for pharmaceutical innovation. These factors provide new avenues for optimizing drug formulations, improving crystal structure quality, and accelerating the discovery of therapeutic targets. Advances in deep space research not only help overcome critical bottlenecks in terrestrial drug development but also promote progress in structure-based drug design and deepen understanding of cellular stress-response mechanisms. Space medicine deals with the branch of research involved with the adaptation of humans to the unique environment of space. More than 100 people have traveled in space. The day will come when some human beings will spend all their time in space. Medical problems encountered in space, such as motion sickness, negative nitrogen and calcium balance, anemia and radiation exposure, are issues that already affect medical practice outside aerospace medicine.

With the accelerated development of urbanization, many village populations have flowed into cities, intensifying the "hollowing out" of villages, leading directly to the idleness and abandonment of residential building spaces. We take idle residential building spaces in traditional villages in Beijing as our research object, construct an architectural spatial characteristic factor system through research of the current situation and relevant data collation, and interpret the characteristics of the research object by adopting kernel density estimation and SPSS statistical analysis. Family physician Robert Thirsk, an original member of the Canadian Space Agency's astronaut program, will be part of the seven-member crew when the space shuttle Columbia lifts off from Florida's Kennedy Space Centre June 20. In this special report, the 1982 McGill graduate outlines some of the physiologic and materials-science experiments the crew will conduct. Thirsk, a payload specialist and crew medical officer, thinks the findings could have a significant impact on future space missions, medicine and the biotechnology industry.

Spaceflight imposes unique environmental challenges, including weightlessness, increased radiation exposure and confinement, which can lead to unexpected health effects. One such example is neck-vein thrombosis, a condition rarely seen on Earth without predisposing factors such as venous catheters or infections. Although spaceflight has not previously been associated with thromboembolic events, recent cases of neck-vein thrombosis in astronauts aboard the International Space Station have raised concern. These events were detected incidentally and showed no obvious symptoms, complicating diagno

This short case report presents the development and treatment of a head lice outbreak during a space simulation experiment. The confinement experiment was conducted from July 1999 to March 2000 at the State Research Center of the Russian Federation Institute for Biomedical Problems in Moscow. Following a symptom period of up to 9 wk before diagnosis and treatment, 3 wk of treatment were required to remove all nits from those infected. Recommendations are made with regard to prevention of such infections during space missions. Treatment altered performance and comfort of crews, took time out of

Near future scenarios of long-term and far-reaching manned space missions, require more extensive knowledge of all possible biological consequences of space radiation, particularly in humans, on both a long-term and a short-term basis. In vitro cultured cells have significantly contributed to the tremendous advancement of biomedical research. It is therefore to be expected that simple biological systems such as cultured cells, will contribute to space biomedical sciences. Space represents a novel environment, to which life has not been previously exposed. Both microgravity and space radiation

Background: The resurgence of space travel in the recent years, both through formally trained astronauts on the International Space Station and the civilian space race to send astrocivilians to Low Earth Orbit and beyond, beckons the need to understand the role of the lymphatic system and role of endothelial glycocalyx when subjected to gravitational alterations. Methods and Results: A comprehensive narrative review of the literature explores a call to action for research and countermeasure development to support the health and well-being of humans subjected to space flight, with particular at

In support of the preparatory programme for the European manned space infrastructure, the Long-Term Programme Office (LTPO) within ESA's Space Station and Microgravity Directorate initiated a series of studies aimed at a better understanding of the physiological and psychological aspects of living in space. In this context, in 1991 MEDES (Institut de medecine et physiologie spatiale) was contracted by the Agency to investigate the type and efficacy of drugs available for use by astronauts during space missions to counteract the effects of weightlessness or for medical treatments. People with a learning disability in the UK are increasingly choosing to spend their time on 'care farms' but there is limited research examining these spaces from their perspective. A qualitative research design was used to ask eighteen of these clients how care farms contributed to their health and wellbeing. For these participants care farms can be understood, using Fleuret and Atkinson's (2007) framework, as a 'space of wellbeing' and as a positive and life-enhancing space. Positive language was used by participants to describe the farms contrasting with ne gative language describing other

Commercial sub-orbital operators will soon offer the excitement of traveling to space to thousands of people. Based on previous experience in space flight and parabolic flight, sensorimotor disruptions in eye movements, postural stability, and motor coordination are likely in these travelers. Here we propose a framework for developing strategies to overcome these sensorimotor disruptions. We delineate how approaches should differ from those applied to orbital flight and between sub-orbital passengers and pilots based on differing frequency of flights and mission objectives. Sensorimotor adapta

Space medicine is critical in enabling safe human exploration of space. The discipline focuses on supporting human survival, health, and performance in the austere environment of space. It is set to grow ever more important as significant transitions in the standard of space operations in the suborbital, low earth orbit (LEO) and beyond LEO domains will take place in the coming years. NASA along with their international and commercial partners have committed to returning to the Moon through the Artemis missions in this decade with the aim of achieving a permanent sustainable human presence on

BACKGROUND: Human physiology undergoes extensive changes in space potentially leading to alterations in the way a medication functions. Understanding the efficacy behind Pharmacological Countermeasures (PCMs) and deliverable pharmacy services is imperative for the future presence of humans in space. However, while the pharmacist plays an integral role for human health terrestrially, pharmacist input has been minimal for human health in the space sector. Here, we explore the pharmacist's potential role in larger medical teams for future missions.
OBJECTIVE: To explore pharmacy and space sector

Purpose Researchers in the cognitive sciences have identified several key training strategies that support good encoding and retention of target information. These strategies are retrieval-based practice, also known as learning through testing, and spaced practice. The recent resurgence of research on retrieval-based and spaced practice has been extended to investigate the effectiveness of these strategies to support learning in individuals with language disorders. The purpose of the current article is to review key principles of retrieval-based and spaced practice that can be used to support

Space motion sickness, presumably triggered by sudden entry into a weightless environment, occurred with unexpected frequency and severity among astronauts who flew the Skylab missions. Recovery from symptoms was complete within 3-5 days, and as revealed by the Skylab M131 Human Vestibular Function Experiment, all crewmembers were immune to experimentally induced motion sickness after mission day 8. This syndrome has been recognized as a possible threat to the early mission well-being and operational efficiency of at least some individuals who will fly space missions in the future. The causes

OBJECTIVE: To review the literature on the comparative efficacy of psychological, behavioural and medical therapies for acrophobia (fear of heights).
DATA SOURCES: Multiple databases were searched through the Cochrane Common Mental Disorders review group on 1 December 2015.
DATA SYNTHESIS: The data were extracted independently and were pooled using RevMan version 5.3.5. The main outcome measures were changes from baseline on questionnaires for measurement of fear of heights, such as the Acrophobia Questionnaire (AQ), Attitude Towards Height Questionnaire (ATHQ), and behavioural avoidance tes

The microgravity environment of spaceflight produces rapid cardiovascular changes which are adaptive and appropriate in that setting, but are associated with significant deconditioning and orthostatic hypotension on return to Earth's gravity. The rapidity with which these space flight induced changes appear and disappear provides an ideal model for studying the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms of deconditioning and orthostatic hypotension, regardless of etiology. Since significant deconditioning is seen after flights of very short duration, muscle atrophy due to inactivity plays, at mo

BACKGROUND: In past reports, researchers have seldom attached importance to achievements in transforming digital anatomy to radiological diagnosis. However, investigators have been able to illustrate communication relationships in the retroperitoneal space by drawing potential routes in computerized tomography (CT) images or a virtual anatomical atlas. We established a new imaging anatomy research method for comparisons of the communication relationships of the retroperitoneal space in combination with the Visible Human Project and CT images. Specifically, the anatomic pathways of peripancreat
