Beyond Low-Earth Orbit: Characterizing Immune and microRNA Differentials following Simulated Deep Spaceflight Conditions in Mice.

Spaceflight missions can cause immune system dysfunction in astronauts with little understanding of immune outcomes in deep space. This study assessed immune responses in mice following ground-based, simulated deep spaceflight conditions, compared with data from astronauts on International Space Station missions. For ground studies, we simulated microgravity using the hindlimb unloaded mouse model alone or in combination with acute simulated galactic cosmic rays or solar particle events irradiation. Immune profiling results revealed unique immune diversity following each experimental condition

[Some problems of space medicine].

The paper discusses the problems to be resolved by space medicine and the main stages in the development of this branch of science, beginning with the vertical launches of rockets and ending with the flights of orbital stations. On the basis of ground-based simulation experiments and real space flights it presents a classification of the major symptomocomplexes that may occur inflight. The paper describes the main stages of adaptation to weightlessness and physiological changes in the weightless state. The paper also outlines further pathways in the development of space medicine.

Cardiovascular studies during and following simulation and weightlessness.

Two major characteristics of space flight may be simulated to some degree by bed rest and by water immersion. These are inactivity and the lack of the hydrostatic stress on the systematic circulation. Studies prior to the advent of space flight led to the prediction of orthostatic intolerance, muscular weakness, and calcium loss. Prolonged space flight has heightened the interest in these simulations to provide information concerning the temporal cause of the "deconditioning" or disuse syndrome and the value of simulation for testing the effectiveness of remedial measures. Vertical skew due to changes in gravitoinertial force: a possible consequence of otolith asymmetry.

During the alternating enhanced and reduced "gravity" levels of parabolic flight, subjects noted that a horizontally eccentric point target viewed binocularly in darkness seemed to split into two targets with vertical divergence. The amount of perceived divergence seemed to depend on instantaneous g level. This perceptual observation suggested a vertical misalignment of the eyes (vertical skew), dependent on the magnitude of g level sensed by the otoliths. While performing a different experiment during parabolic flight we recorded binocular eye position and analyzed these data to corroborate t

Helicity of a confined bottlebrush ring polymer.

We report coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulation data for a bottlebrush "loops-on-a-ring" polymer confined to a cylindrical space, motivated by its utility as a model of the bacteria nucleoid. Simulations reveal that this confined polymer adopts a helical configuration due to the tendency of the side loops to fill space with uniform density while maintaining the ring architecture. We further investigate how the helical conformation is affected by the distribution of side chains, demonstrating that switching from uniform grafting (a bottlebrush architecture) to asymmetric grafting (a coil

3D-Printed Ophthalmic-Retrobulbar-Anesthesia Simulator: Mimicking Anatomical Structures and Providing Tactile Sensations.

Objective: A simulator for retrobulbar anesthesia administration mimicking the orbital anatomy and providing tactile sensation is proposed. Methods: The production process involves 3D modeling of anatomical structures on the basis of computerized tomography (CT) images, printing the models using a 3D printer, and casting the silicone. Twenty ophthalmologists administered retrobulbar anesthesia using the simulator with four different ocular axial lengths (including extreme myopes); the position of the needle tip was evaluated. The effectiveness of this simulator for training was also surveyed.

PriorAug: Reliability-Aware Traffic Scenario Initialization Under Sensor-Perceived Structural and Interaction Priors.

Traffic scenario initialization is a key component of autonomous driving simulation. The generated initial traffic states directly affect downstream motion prediction, planning evaluation, closed-loop simulation, and safety assessment. Existing traffic scenario generators usually rely on structural and interaction priors, but these priors are commonly treated as deterministic and fully reliable during both training and deployment. In practical autonomous driving systems, however, such priors are reconstructed from heterogeneous perception pipelines involving sensors, localization, tracking, on

Current opinion on simulation in family planning.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We aim to review novel family planning simulation models published since 2017. We will focus primarily on models for simulating abortion care, given the increased need for simulation education in this area post-Dobbs. RECENT FINDINGS: Since the last current opinion on simulation in family planning in 2017, three novel dilation and evacuation models have been created. These are all low-fidelity and include a Styrofoam uterine model, a plastic bottle with a Cornish hen model, and a collapsible water bottle model. No new first-trimester abortion models have been published. In

Theoretical and Experimental Investigations on High-Precision Micro-Low-Gravity Simulation Technology for Lunar Mobile Vehicle.

With the development of space technology, the functions of lunar vehicles are constantly enriched, and the structure is constantly complicated, which puts forward more stringent requirements for its ground micro-low-gravity simulation test technology. This paper puts forward a high-precision and high-dynamic landing buffer test method based on the principle of magnetic quasi-zero stiffness. Firstly, the micro-low-gravity simulation system for the lunar vehicle was designed. The dynamic model of the system and a position control method based on fuzzy PID parameter tuning were established. Then,

Design and Dynamic Control: A Free-Flying Space Robot Inspired by Water Striders.

This work designed a free-flying space robot (FFSR) that simulates the on-orbit assembly of large space telescopes, drawing inspiration from the flexible movement of water striders on water surfaces. Initially, we developed the system structure of the robot, including the corresponding air-floating ground simulation system. This system enables floating movement of the robot in a gravity-free environment through the utilization of planar air bearings. Subsequently, we established the kinematics and dynamics models for the FFSR. Following that, we propose a novel adaptive boundary layer fuzzy sl

Numerical and biomechanical analysis of orthodontic treatment of recovered periodontally compromised patients.

OBJECTIVE: Generate a finite element (FE) model to simulate space closure and retraction mechanics for anterior maxillary teeth in periodontally compromised dentition, and compare the biomechanical effect of initial force systems with varying magnitude. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The geometry of an idealized finite element model (FEM) of a maxilla was adapted such that the teeth showed reduced periodontal support together with extruded and flared incisors. In a first step, leveling and alignment of the front teeth were simulated. In a second step, force systems for orthodontic space closure of re

Development and test-retest reliability of a laboratory-based shipboard firefighting simulation for controlled performance testing.

Understanding shipboard firefighting performance is critical for improving crew safety and vessel preservation during damage control events. While prior research has been conducted in naval spaces, controlled simulations that assess performance without requiring naval vessels, personnel or specialised equipment are lacking. This study was designed to both develop and test a laboratory-based shipboard firefighting simulation. Consistent with shipboard firefighting activities, the simulation included walking, stair climbing, hose dragging, simulated boundary cooling, extinguisher carrying and ca

Adaptive hybrid ranging and trajectory extraction for single-photon lidar space-debris detection.

With the exponential growth of on-orbit space debris, timely detection and monitoring are essential for space situational awareness. Space-borne single-photon Lidar (SSPL) offers day-and-night operability and high pointing agility. Debris observations are often characterized by extremely low signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) and signal loss, which hinder reliable target discrimination and the extraction of distance trajectories. We present a variational Bayesian adaptive Kalman filtering with the Spatio-Temporal Association (VBAKF-STA) algorithm for space-borne, thousand-kilometer-range observation

Simulation degradation datasets for health prognosis of a control moment gyroscope's flywheel system.

A Control moment gyroscope (CMG) is an attitude control actuator widely used in spacecraft. As a consequence of the continuous high-speed rotation to output stable angular momentum, CMGs are at a higher risk of degradation failure, which could lead to a loss of spacecraft control. However, implementing health prognosis for CMGs is challenging due to the high cost associated with conducting comprehensive lifetime tests. Moreover, environment differences between space and ground make data generated with simulation in the space environment more valuable than data from ground experiments for healt

Remains Containment Considerations for Death in Low-Earth Orbit.

BACKGROUND: Maintenance and disposition of decedent remains during spaceflight require the isolation of biohazardous products of decomposition in microgravity and in the absence of refrigeration. Containment and isolation options would preferably offer sufficient time to enable crew and ground support teams to determine appropriate disposition of remains and even potentially return remains to the Earth. The pilot study described herein undertook an effort to develop a postmortem containment unit for the isolation and maintenance of decedent remains in a microgravity environment.METHODS: Commer

A Deep Learning-Driven Sampling Technique to Explore the Phase Space of an RNA Stem-Loop.

The folding and unfolding of RNA stem-loops are critical biological processes; however, their computational studies are often hampered by the ruggedness of their folding landscape, necessitating long simulation times at the atomistic scale. Here, we adapted DeepDriveMD (DDMD), an advanced deep learning-driven sampling technique originally developed for protein folding, to address the challenges of RNA stem-loop folding. Although tempering- and order parameter-based techniques are commonly used for similar rare-event problems, the computational costs or the need for a priori knowledge about the

A fault-tolerant and robust controller using model predictive path integral control for free-flying space robots.

The use of manipulators in space missions has become popular, as their applications can be extended to various space missions such as on-orbit servicing, assembly, and debris removal. Due to space reachability limitations, such robots must accomplish their tasks in space autonomously and under severe operating conditions such as the occurrence of faults or uncertainties. For robots and manipulators used in space missions, this paper provides a unique, robust control technique based on Model Predictive Path Integral Control (MPPI). The proposed algorithm, named Planner-Estimator MPPI (PE-MPPI),
