Fungal diversity differences in the indoor dust microbiome from built environments on earth and in space.

Human occupied built environments are no longer confined to Earth. In fact, there have been humans living and working in low-Earth orbit on the International Space Station (ISS) since November 2000. With NASA's Artemis missions and the age of commercial space stations set to begin, more human-occupied spacecraft than ever will be in Earth's orbit and beyond. On Earth and in the ISS, microbes, especially fungi, can be found in dust and grow when unexpected, elevated moisture conditions occur. However, we do not yet know how indoor microbiomes in Earth-based homes and in the ISS differ due to th

Compact laser interferometer for dynamic nanometer-level ranging.

Hexapod positioning systems are employed in a variety of industrial and research applications, such as satellite sensor testing, optical metrology, and motion simulation. In the context of a testbed simulating spacecraft-to-spacecraft laser ranging interferometry, a hexapod is used to reproduce orbit dynamics, including spacecraft jitter. Due to the insufficient resolution of its internal sensors, what we believe to be a novel interferometer architecture with the capability for nm-level ranging is presented, to act as an external reference system. The simple optical layout is achieved through

Machine-Learning-Driven Simulations of Hyperthermal Atomic Oxygen Impacts on (0001) Al2O3 for Low-Altitude Satellite Design.

In Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO), spacecraft encounter residual atmosphere primarily composed of atomic oxygen (AO). The drag and operational lifetime of these spacecraft are determined by the interaction between AO and the surface, which for aluminum is a passivation layer of Al2O3. We present a blueprint for developing machine-learned interatomic potentials for reactive gas-surface systems. Gaussian-Moment Neural Networks, implemented in apax, are trained using an active learning workflow that incorporates a spin-state switching scheme. This approach accounts for the triplet-to-singlet transit

Juno's Close Encounter With Ganymede-An Overview.

The Juno spacecraft has been in orbit around Jupiter since 2016. Two flybys of Ganymede were executed in 2021, opportunities realized by evolution of Juno's polar orbit over the intervening 5 years. The geometry of the close flyby just prior to the 34th perijove pass by Jupiter brought the spacecraft inside Ganymede's unique magnetosphere. Juno's payload, designed to study Jupiter's magnetosphere, had ample dynamic range to study Ganymede's magnetosphere. The Juno radio system was used both for gravity measurements and for study of Ganymede's ionosphere. Remote sensing of Ganymede returned new

In Situ Measurements of Thermal Ion Temperature in the Martian Ionosphere.

In situ measurements of ionospheric and thermospheric temperatures are experimentally challenging because orbiting spacecraft typically travel supersonically with respect to the cold gas and plasma. We present O 2 + temperatures in Mars' ionosphere derived from data measured by the SupraThermal And Thermal Ion Composition instrument onboard the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN spacecraft. We focus on data obtained during nine special orbit maneuvers known as Deep Dips, during which MAVEN lowered its periapsis altitude from the nominal 150 to 120 km for 1 week in order to sample the

First-principles insights into atomic oxygen protection coatings composed of scale-like layered double hydroxide nanosheets.

With human activities in outer space becoming increasingly frequent, including the construction of space stations and satellite constellations such as Starlink, OneWeb, and G60 Qianfan Constellation, the protection of spacecraft against atomic oxygen (AO) in the low-Earth orbit (LEO) has become critical. AO, characterized by its strong oxidative capability and high collisional energy, has been considered the most serious hazard to the LEO spacecraft. Recently, it was found that scale-like Mg-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) coatings are highly effective in protecting flexible spacecraft parts

Radiation on Earth or in Space: What Does It Change?

After having been an instrument of the Cold War, space exploration has become a major technological, scientific and societal challenge for a number of countries. With new projects to return to the Moon and go to Mars, radiobiologists have been called upon to better assess the risks linked to exposure to radiation emitted from space (IRS), one of the major hazards for astronauts. To this aim, a major task is to identify the specificities of the different sources of IRS that concern astronauts. By considering the probabilities of the impact of IRS against spacecraft shielding, three conclusions

Electrical Conductivity Characteristic of Polyimide under Long-Term Combined Electron Irradiation and Thermal Cycle in Vacuum.

During long-term operation, low-earth-orbit spacecraft are exposed to a severe environment of electron irradiation and thermal cycle. This affects the electric properties of polyimide, an essential insulation material for spacecraft electrical transmission equipment, particularly the conductivity characteristic. Therefore, this paper investigates the conductivity and its evolution of polyimide after the combination of 20 keV, 8 nA/cm2 electron irradiation, and 243-343 K, 5 K/min thermal cycle in a vacuum environment for 432 h. The results show that the conductivity increases by about 2 orders

Large Adsorption Capacity for Space Molecular Pollutants Realized by a Metal-Organic Framework.

The rapid development of capable spacecraft coatings for removing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) demands materials with a large adsorption capacity to ensure a long-duration exploration mission in a low Earth orbit (LEO). MIL-53(Al) with abundant sites exhibits resistance to the space environment in the LEO and shows great potential for VOC removal. This study combined an adsorption experiment and first-principles simulations to investigate the adsorption performance of MIL-53(Al). MIL-53(Al) demonstrated an excellent adsorption capacity for various VOCs, reaching 606.04 mg/g for m-xylene a

Development of Martian saline seep models and their implications for planetary protection.

While life on Mars has not been found, Earth-based microorganisms may contaminate the Red Planet during rover expeditions and human exploration. Due to the survival advantages conferred by the biofilm morphology to microorganisms, such as resistance to UV and osmotic stress, biofilms are particularly concerning from a planetary protection perspective. Modeling and data from the NASA Phoenix mission indicate that temporary liquid water might exist on Mars in the form of high salinity brines. These brines could provide colonization opportunities for terrestrial microorganisms brought by spacecra

Combined optical line-of-sight and crosslink radiometric navigation for distributed deep-space systems.

This manuscript aims to present and evaluate the applicability of combining optical line-of-sight (LoS) navigation with crosslink radiometric navigation for deep-space cruising distributed space systems. To do so, a set of four distributed space systems architectures is presented, and for each of those, the applicability of the combination is evaluated, comparing it to the baseline solutions, which are based on only optical navigation. The comparison is done by studying the performance in a circular heliocentric orbit in seven different time intervals (ranging from 2024 to 2032) and exploiting

Research on B4C/PEEK Composite Material Radiation Shielding.

There are various types of charged particles in the space environment, which can cause different types of radiation damage to materials and devices, leading to on-orbit failures and even accidents for spacecraft. Developing lightweight and efficient radiation-shielding materials is an effective approach to improving the inherent protection of spacecraft. The protective performance of different materials against proton and electron spectra in the Earth's radiation belts is evaluated using a Geant4 simulation. Based on the simulation results, suitable hardening components were selected to design

Optical efficiencies of lightning in planetary atmospheres.

Spacecraft observations show that the presence of lightning activity is not confined to the terrestrial atmosphere, but is also found in the atmospheres of Venus, Jupiter and Saturn. Lightning activity may also occur in Titan's thick atmosphere. Calculations show that lightning produces a significant fraction of the nitric oxide that reacts with the ozone and chlorine compounds in the terrestrial stratosphere. In the atmosphere of the primordial Earth, lightning could have been the major source of many of the molecules required for the formation of life. To determine the effects of lightning a

Spaceflight multi-omics reveals vulnerabilities of human germ cell development.

Understanding the impact of spaceflight on human reproduction is critical for interplanetary exploration, yet technical barriers have limited direct studies of germ cell biology in orbit. Here, we utilized an automated bioreactor that supported long-term differentiation of human embryonic stem cells into human induced primordial germ cells (hiPGCs), human induced ovarian follicles (hiOFs), and human induced spermatogonial stem cells (hiSSCs) aboard spacecraft. Integrated real-time imaging, programmable medium perfusion, and in situ preservation enabled time-resolved multi-omics analysis. Durin

Solid rocket motor insulation adhesives with sporicidal activity promote planetary protection for deep space missions.

To prevent microbial contamination of extraterrestrial biospheres, NASA has established planetary protection requirements for spacecraft bioburden reduction. For missions to land on the icy moons of the outer planets, solid rocket motors (SRM) commonly used as de-orbit and braking stages are of particular concern for planetary protection since microbial contamination may occur during spacecraft manufacturing and assembly and debris from the SRM can spread over large portions of the planetary surface after impact. In concept spacecraft designs for deep space missions, certain SRM regions are no

High-precision space camera self-calibration via structural priors and intelligent optimization.

During long-term on-orbit operation, space cameras are subjected to extreme thermal cycles, high vacuum, intense radiation, and complex mechanical loads, which cause drift in the geometric parameters of the imaging system. To improve the on-orbit camera's imaging quality without altering the optical system, existing calibration methods are insufficient. Therefore, this study proposes, to our knowledge, a novel on-orbit autonomous calibration method based on the structural features of the spacecraft. Unlike traditional ground-based calibration methods and satellite-based reference object-depend
