Proliferative visceral Isospora (atoxoplasmosis) with morbid impact on the Israeli sparrow Passer domesticus biblicus Hartert, 1904.

House sparrows (Passer domesticus biblicus Hartert, 1904) caught in the Jordan valley, the coastal plain, and the desert region in Southern Israel were found massively infected with extraintestinal proliferative stages of Isospora, previously named Atoxoplasma. Infection coincided with Isospora spp. infections in the digestive tract. Prevalence of infection reached 70% among sparrows of all three regions; however, only in the Jordan valley did the severity of the sparrows compromised their survival. Healthy appearing captured birds showed symptoms of "going light" syndrome -- diarrhea, emaciat

Short-term exposure to dim light at night affects reproduction and metabolism-linked processes in adult male tree sparrows (Passer montanus).

Anthropogenic factors, particularly urbanization, have immense implications for the natural light-dark cycle of the species. The present study deliberates on the effects of dim light at night on the transcript expression of reproductive, steroidogenic, and metabolic gene markers in adult male tree sparrows (Passer montanus). Adult male birds were procured locally and were divided into two groups (n = 6 birds/group). Both groups were exposed to 12 h of light and 12 h of darkness, but group two (dLAN group) with a constant dim light (10 lx) during the dark hours. The experiment was run for 2 wee

SUSCEPTIBILITY AND ANTIBODY RESPONSE OF VESPER SPARROWS (POOECETES GRAMINEUS) TO WEST NILE VIRUS: A POTENTIAL AMPLIFICATION HOST IN SAGEBRUSH-GRASSLAND HABITAT.

West Nile virus (WNV) spread to the US western plains states in 2003, when a significant mortality event attributed to WNV occurred in Greater Sage-grouse ( Centrocercus urophasianus ). The role of avian species inhabiting sagebrush in the amplification of WNV in arid and semiarid regions of the North America is unknown. We conducted an experimental WNV challenge study in Vesper Sparrows ( Pooecetes gramineus ), a species common to sagebrush and grassland habitats found throughout much of North America. We found Vesper Sparrows to be moderately susceptible to WNV, developing viremia considered

Improving carbon dioxide emission predictions through a hybrid model utilising an advanced sparrow search algorithm.

The dramatic increase in carbon dioxide emissions is a major cause of global warming and climate change, posing a serious threat to human development and profoundly affecting the global ecosystem. Currently, carbon dioxide emissions prediction studies rely heavily on a large amount of data support, and the accuracy of predictions is greatly reduced when data are scarce. In addition, the inherent uncertainty, volatility, and complexity of CO2 emission data further exacerbate the challenge of accurate prediction. To address these issues, a novel hybrid model for CO2 emission prediction is propos

[Prediction of Agricultural Carbon Emission Based on Improved BP Neural Network with Optimized Sparrow Search Algorithm].

The accurate forecasting of agricultural carbon emissions is essential for formulating strategies to achieve carbon peak and neutrality objectives within the agricultural sector. However, existing methodologies for predicting agricultural carbon emissions have notable limitations. To address these shortcomings, Shanghai farm was considered as a case study to conduct research utilizing a neural network approach. Agricultural carbon emissions from the Shanghai farm from 2011 to 2021 were computed using the emission-factor method. Subsequently, a Back Propagation (BP) neural network model was dev

The role of the pineal gland in the photoperiodic control of bird song frequency and repertoire in the house sparrow, Passer domesticus.

Temperate zone birds are highly seasonal in many aspects of their physiology. In mammals, but not in birds, the pineal gland is an important component regulating seasonal patterns of primary gonadal functions. Pineal melatonin in birds instead affects seasonal changes in brain song control structures, suggesting the pineal gland regulates seasonal song behavior. The present study tests the hypothesis that the pineal gland transduces photoperiodic information to the control of seasonal song behavior to synchronize this important behavior to the appropriate phenology. House sparrows, Passer dome

Validity of Isospora lacazei (Labbé, 1893) infecting the house sparrow, Passer domesticus (L.), in Saudi Arabia.

Isospora lacazei was described from large number of passeriform birds including house sparrow (Passer domesticus). It was not certain whether all described species under this name belong to the same species. Also, two other species (Isospora passeris and Isospora passerum) were identified from P. domesticus depending on variation of oocyst measurements. During the present study, the Isospora species was reported from house sparrow (P. domesticus) in Saudi Arabia. The oocyst measurement ranges cover all the ranges of the previously described Isospora species from P. domesticus. Therefore, the p

Zinc bioaccumulation in house sparrows (Passer domesticus) across urban and rural areas of Meknes, Morocco: a bioindicator of environmental pollution.

This study investigates zinc (Zn) bioaccumulation in house sparrows (Passer domesticus) across urban and rural areas of Meknes, Morocco, to evaluate their effectiveness as bioindicators of environmental pollution. Fifty sparrows were sampled from five locations: an industrial zone, town center, bus station, main road, and a rural reference site. Zinc concentrations, measured on a dry weight basis using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS), revealed significant differences between sites for the liver (111.43 ± 4.25 µg/g), kidneys (56.68 ± 3.50 µg/g), blood (1.638 ± 0.652 µg/g),

High costs of infection: Alphavirus infection reduces digestive function and bone and feather growth in nestling house sparrows (Passer domesticus).

Increasingly, ecoimmunology studies aim to use relevant pathogen exposure to examine the impacts of infection on physiological processes in wild animals. Alphaviruses are arthropod-borne, single-stranded RNA (ssRNA) viruses ("arboviruses") responsible for millions of cases of human illnesses each year. Buggy Creek virus (BCRV) is a unique alphavirus that is transmitted by a cimicid insect, the swallow bug, and is amplified in two avian species: the house sparrow (Passer domesticus) and the cliff swallow (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota). BCRV, like many alphaviruses, exhibits age-dependent susceptibi

Thyroid hormone acts centrally to programme photostimulated male american tree sparrows (Spizella arborea) for vernal and autumnal components of seasonality.

Thyroid hormone and long days interact to programme American tree sparrows (Spizella arborea) for seasonality (i.e. thyroid hormone-dependent photoperiodic gonadal growth, photorefractoriness, and postnuptial moult). This study explored in radiothyroidectomized (THX) males given thyroid hormone replacement therapy whether thyroid hormone acts within the brain and, additionally, the identity of the putative tissue-active thyroid hormone. The minimum dose (30 ng) of L-thyroxine (T4) that restored all components of seasonality when given i.c.v. daily during the first 21 days of photostimulation r

Breeding in the City: Non-Linear Associations of Urbanization, Tree Cover, and Human Disturbance with Eurasian Tree Sparrows (Passer montanus) Breeding Performance.

Urbanization can alter habitat structure and disturbance regimes, with consequences for bird reproduction. We used 13 years of nest-box monitoring data from 15 urban green spaces in Madrid, Spain, with an average of 866 nest boxes monitored annually, to assess how urbanization, tree cover, building height, road infrastructure, noise, and pedestrian intensity were associated with Eurasian Tree Sparrow (Passer montanus) breeding performance. Nest-box occupancy, eggs and hatched chicks per box, nestlings reaching ringing age, and mean number of clutches showed non-linear associations with urbaniz

Melatonin modulates corticosterone-induced effects on steroidogenesis and reproductive-linked processes in male tree sparrow (passer montanus).

In birds, stressors increase corticosterone, a glucocorticoid, causing physiological, reproductive, and behavioural changes. Besides, melatonin, a neurohormone produced by the pineal gland, regulates circadian rhythms and seasonal reproduction and exhibits antioxidant properties. In the present study, photorefractory adult male tree sparrows were used. Body mass, bill colour, and testicular volume were recorded. Later, birds (n = 6/group) were divided into three groups and were treated for 4 weeks under 8L:16D light conditions: Group 1 received ethanolic saline (control), group 2 received cort

Small intestine structural and functional responses to environmental heavy metal stress in tree sparrow Passer montanus nestlings.

Tree sparrow nestlings predominantly consume protein-rich insect larvae, making them vulnerable to environmental heavy metal contamination through the food web, potentially affecting their growth. Understanding the effects of heavy metals on the structure and function of the small intestine, the principal organ responsible for protein digestion and absorption, is therefore crucial. This study investigated tree sparrow nestlings at three developmental stages (3, 6, and 12 days old) in Liujiaxia (LJX), a comparatively unpolluted area, and Baiyin (BY), a heavy metal polluted area, to elucidate th

A reduced-form ensemble of short-term air quality forecasting with the Sparrow search algorithm and decomposition error correction.

The level of air pollution is reflected by the air quality index (AQI). People can use the AQI to organize their activities in a way that reduces or prevents exposure to air pollution altogether. Based on the AQI, governments, organizations, and businesses can also make plans to reduce air pollution. The multi-model ensemble has recently become a popular method for forecasting time series; however, it encounters the research problems of multi-parameter optimization and interaction analysis. To this end, a reduced-form ensemble of short-term air quality forecasting with the Sparrow search algor

Distinct Networks of Expressed Genes Are Associated With Neophobia in the Hippocampus of Male and Female Eurasian Tree Sparrows (Passer montanus).

Neophobia, avoidance of novel stimuli, is an ecologically and evolutionarily relevant behavioural trait that varies among individuals and across species. Especially among wild animals, the neuromolecular mechanisms underlying individual variation in neophobia have not been well characterised. We examined three neophobic behaviours in captive female and male Eurasian tree sparrows (Passer montanus) from a wild population introduced to the USA in 1870: responses towards novel objects, novel foods, and repeated presentations of the same initially novel object. We compared transcriptomic patterns

A new Salmonella enterica serovar that was isolated from a wild sparrow presents a distinct genetic, metabolic and virulence profile.

Salmonella enterica is a ubiquitous and clinically-important bacterial pathogen, able to infect and cause different diseases in a wide range of hosts. Here, we report the isolation and characterization of a new S. enterica serovar (13,23:i:-; S. Tirat-Zvi), belonging to the Havana supper-lineage that was isolated from a wild house sparrow (Passer domesticus) in Israel. Whole genome sequencing and complete assembly of its genome indicated a plasmid-free, 4.7 Mb genome that carries the Salmonella pathogenicity islands 1-6, 9, 19 and an integrative and conjugative element (ICE), encoding arsenic
