Capturing peripersonal spatial neglect: an electronic method to quantify visuospatial processes.

Computerized as well as paper-and-pencil tasks are applied in mapping visuospatial neglect in experimental research and clinical practice. This article presents a new kind of computer-based assessment method, using an electronic pen display and user-friendly software. The approach is tailored to specific spatial processes and highlights the usefulness of a pen display in neglect patients. The advantages of the introduced method are illustrated by a recently designed battery of classic, as well as new, types of tests. The development of the appropriate stimuli and the assorted scoring systems i

Influence of age on speech-in-noise and spatial processing abilities in middle-aged adults.

Speech perception in noise (SPIN) difficulties are commonly associated with older adults, but emerging evidence suggests they may begin in midlife. This study investigated SPIN and spatial processing abilities in middle-aged adults using the Spatial Separation Sentence Test-Kannada (SSST-K). A cross-sectional design assessed 76 participants aged 41-60 years, divided into two groups (41-50 and 51-60 years). Assessments included: (1) the SSST-K to evaluate SPIN and spatial processing, (2) the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) for general cognition, and (3) standardized questionnaires measurin

Dentate gyrus network regulation by somatostatin- and parvalbumin-expressing interneurons differentially impacts spatial memory processing.

GABAergic interneurons regulate circuit dynamics of memory-processing brain structures. However, the role of the dentate gyrus (DG) and its predominant interneuron subtypes - somatostatin-expressing (SST+) and parvalbumin-expressing (PV+) - in different stages of memory processing is unknown. We tested how the chemogenetic manipulation of DG SST+ and PV+ interneurons in mice influences encoding, consolidation, and retrieval of hippocampus-dependent object-location memory (OLM). The activation of DG SST+ interneurons impairs OLM encoding and retrieval, dramatically suppresses DG granule cell ac

Distinct and shared neural resources between processing of dynamic physical objects and spatial working memory.

In human brains, portions of the frontoparietal cortex respond when people reason about the physical world (e.g. track objects, make predictions), and when people engage in a variety of demanding tasks (e.g. working memory, motor inhibition). Here, we use functional neuroimaging to address an open question about whether the same neural resources support both mental functions. Twenty-eight human adults (M age = 26.5y; 17 female; 26 right handed) were scanned using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while they (i) tracked the dynamics of physical objects (vs social agents), and (ii) pe

A Reconsideration of Parallel Processing in Vision: Importance of Lower Spatial Frequencies to Form Vision.

The appreciation of parallel visual pathways from retina to cortex in mammalian vision has greatly advanced our understanding of sensory processing. While these anatomical pathways are well-characterized, their specific functional roles remain incompletely understood, particularly in terms of parsing natural scenes. Here, we start with a re-evaluation of the functional contributions of parallel X and Y pathways in the cat, emphasizing the underappreciated role of Y cells in spatial vision. Contrary to the traditional view that prioritizes the importance of high acuity for visual function and t

Reward Processing Deficits During a Spatial Attention Task in Patients With ADHD: An fMRI Study.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to explore how cues signaling rewards and feedbacks about rewards are processed in ADHD. METHOD: Inside the scanner, 16 healthy children and 19 children with ADHD completed a spatial attention paradigm where cues informed about the availability of reward and feedbacks were provided about the earned reward. RESULTS: In ventral anterior thalamus (VA), the controls exhibited greater activation in response to reward-predicting cues, as compared with no-reward cues, whereby in the ADHD group, the reverse pattern was observed (nonreward > reward). For feedbacks;

Evidence of the impact of visuo-spatial processing on magnitude representation in 22q11.2 microdeletion syndrome.

The influence of visuo-spatial skills on numerical magnitude processing is the subject of a long-standing debate. As most of the numerical and non-numerical magnitude abilities underpinning mathematical development are visual by nature, they are often assessed in the visual modality, thereby confusing visuo-spatial and numerical processing. In order to assess the influence of visuo-spatial processing on numerical magnitude representation, we examined magnitude processing in patients with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS), a genetic condition characterized by a cognitive profile with a relati

Beyond phonological processing deficits in adult dyslexics: atypical FMRI activation patterns for spatial problem solving.

It is unclear the extent to which neurodevelopmental differences observed in reading disabled individuals are limited to traditional language processing areas. Some have suggested atypical processing of complex spatial problems in these individuals. Hitherto, research on this question has been limited to behavioral studies, yielding mixed results. Absence of related imaging studies is in stark contrast to the plethora examining functional neurology for verbal tasks. This study uses functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine how adult dyslexics perform when analyzing complex spatia

Preserved functional specialization for spatial processing in the middle occipital gyrus of the early blind.

The occipital cortex (OC) of early-blind humans is activated during various nonvisual perceptual and cognitive tasks, but little is known about its modular organization. Using functional MRI we tested whether processing of auditory versus tactile and spatial versus nonspatial information was dissociated in the OC of the early blind. No modality-specific OC activation was observed. However, the right middle occipital gyrus (MOG) showed a preference for spatial over nonspatial processing of both auditory and tactile stimuli. Furthermore, MOG activity was correlated with accuracy of individual so

Visual-spatial working memory in ADHD: new evidence for a storage rather than a processing deficit.

The ability to voluntarily control eye movements is part of the "executive function" domain, which includes working memory and is impaired in neuro-developmental disorders such as ADHD. The present study aimed to investigate two types of "executive" saccades - anti-saccades (AS) and memory-guided saccades (MGS) - as well as their relationships in samples of children and adolescents with ADHD and neurotypical controls. To that end, anti-saccades and memory-guided saccades were recorded in n = 65 participants with ADHD (age 9.2-17.1 years) and n = 74 neurotypical controls (aged 9.1-17.3 years) a

Visual-spatial processing impairment in the occipital-frontal connectivity network at early stages of Alzheimer's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the leading cause of dementia worldwide, but its pathophysiological phenomena are not fully elucidated. Many neurophysiological markers have been suggested to identify early cognitive impairments of AD. However, the diagnosis of this disease remains a challenge for specialists. In the present cross-sectional study, our objective was to evaluate the manifestations and mechanisms underlying visual-spatial deficits at the early stages of AD. METHODS: We combined behavioral, electroencephalography (EEG), and eye movement recordings during the performance

EEG Correlates of Preparatory Orienting, Contextual Updating, and Inhibition of Sensory Processing in Left Spatial Neglect.

Studies with event-related potentials have highlighted deficits in the early phases of orienting to left visual targets in right-brain-damaged patients with left spatial neglect (N+). However, brain responses associated with preparatory orienting of attention, with target novelty and with the detection of a match/mismatch between expected and actual targets (contextual updating), have not been explored in N+. Here in a study in healthy humans and brain-damaged patients of both sexes we demonstrate that frontal activity that reflects supramodal mechanisms of attentional orienting (Anterior Dire

Visuotactile object processing in binocular rivalry: The role of shape congruence, voluntary action, and spatial colocalization.

Multisensory information can help resolve perceptual ambiguity in situations such as the alternating visual experience during binocular rivalry. Across four experiments, participants viewed dichoptically presented spiky and round rival targets while simultaneously touching spiky, neutral, or round shapes in three-dimensional (3D) printed form. The primary aim was to investigate the influence of visuotactile shape congruence in the curvature dimension. In addition, the roles of voluntary action and spatial colocalization on successful crossmodal integration were investigated. Voluntary action w

Temporary Unilateral Hearing Loss Impairs Spatial Auditory Information Processing in Neurons in the Central Auditory System.

Temporary conductive hearing loss (CHL) can lead to hearing impairments that persist beyond resolution of the CHL. In particular, unilateral CHL leads to deficits in auditory skills that rely on binaural input (e.g., spatial hearing). Here, we asked whether single neurons in the auditory midbrain, which integrate acoustic inputs from the two ears, are altered by a temporary CHL. We introduced 6 weeks of unilateral CHL to young adult chinchillas via foam earplug. Following CHL removal and restoration of peripheral input, single-unit recordings from inferior colliculus (ICC) neurons revealed the

Correlations between cochlear pathophysiology and behavioral measures of temporal and spatial processing in noise exposed macaques.

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is known to have significant consequences for temporal, spectral, and spatial resolution. However, much remains to be discovered about their underlying pathophysiology. This report extends the recent development of a nonhuman primate model of NIHL to explore its consequences for hearing in noisy environments, and its correlations with the underlying cochlear pathology. Ten macaques (seven with normal-hearing, three with NIHL) were used in studies of masked tone detection in which the temporal or spatial properties of the masker were varied to assess metrics of

Differential-handed response to verbal and visual spatial stimuli: evidence of specialized hemispheric processing following callosotomy.

Left- and right-hand responses were studied in a patient who had undergone complete corpus callosotomy to examine selective hemispheric processing employing free-field stimuli. Tests of verbal and visual spatial processing were presented, and multiple choice performances were obtained using both left and right hands. A double dissociation emerged, with superior left-handed performance on visual spatial tasks, and better right-handed performance on verbal tasks. In addition, the patient displayed hemispatial dyscalculia in which he solved written arithmetic problems disregarding free-field nume

Temporal and Spatial Dynamics in the Regulation of Myocardial Metabolism During the Ischemia-Reperfusion Process.

Although cardiac metabolic adaptation has been observed in response to the ischemia-reperfusion, the specific temporal and spatial changes occurring in the main regulators of myocardial glucolipid metabolism in the infarcted heart have not been fully characterized. Myocardial infarction (MI) was induced in female swine by transient coronary occlusion. The study design consisted of one control and four MI groups (no reperfusion, 1 min, 1 week, and 1 month after reperfusion). Metabolites obtained from the coronary sinus were determined at baseline, during ischemia, and after coronary reperfusion

The Implementation Process of Two Evidence-Based Protocols: A Spatial Neglect Network Initiative.

INTRODUCTION: Spatial neglect, a neurocognitive disorder of lateralized spatial attention, is prevalent among stroke survivors especially in inpatient rehabilitation facilities (IRFs). The ultimate goal of the project was to improve spatial neglect care in inpatient rehabilitation and trained as many OTs as possible using both tools in their regular practices as the means to achieve our overall objective. Therefore, we conducted a project aimed at implementing two evidence-based protocols, one for assessment (KF-NAP®) and the other for treatment (KF-PAT®), and share the implementation process,
