Visuospatial attention after traumatic brain injury: The role of hemispheric specialization.

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the behavioural and neural effects of TBI on the hemispheric integrity of three components of visuospatial attention: alerting, orienting and executive control. METHOD: Behavioural performance and high density event-related potentials (ERPs) were acquired while a sample of 12 patients with chronic moderate-to-severe TBI and 12 controls performed the Lateralized Attention Network Test (LANT). Neural indices of attention (posterior N1 amplitude to alerting and orienting cues, midline P3 amplitude during conflict resolution) were examined. RESULTS: Patients with T

Multi-region hemispheric specialization differentiates human from nonhuman primate brain function.

The human behavioral repertoire greatly exceeds that of nonhuman primates. Anatomical specializations of the human brain include an enlarged neocortex and prefrontal cortex (Semendeferi et al. in Am J Phys Anthropol 114:224-241, 2001), but regional enlargements alone cannot account for these vast functional differences. Hemispheric specialization has long believed to be a major contributing factor to such distinctive human characteristics as motor dominance, attentional control and language. Yet structural cerebral asymmetries, documented in both humans and some nonhuman primate species, are r

Functional specialization and ontogenetic scaling of limb anatomy in Alligator mississippiensis.

Crocodylians exhibit a fascinating diversity of terrestrial gaits and limb motions that remain poorly described and are of great importance to understanding their natural history and evolution. Their musculoskeletal anatomy is pivotal to this diversity and yet only qualitative studies of muscle-tendon unit anatomy exist. The relative masses and internal architecture (fascicle lengths and physiological cross-sectional areas) of muscles of the pectoral and pelvic limbs of American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis Daudin 1801) were recorded for an ontogenetic series of wild specimens (n = 1

Patient satisfaction with treatment of breast cancer: does surgeon specialization matter?

PURPOSE: Experience and practice setting vary greatly among surgeons who treat breast cancer patients. However, less is known about how these factors influence patient satisfaction with their care. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We surveyed all ductal carcinoma in situ patients and a 20% random sample of invasive breast cancer patients diagnosed in 2002 reported to the Detroit, MI, and Los Angeles, CA, Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results registries. Attending surgeons were surveyed, yielding dyad information for 64.6% of patients (n = 1,539) and 69.7% of surgeons (n = 318). Logistic regression

Hemispheric specialization in spontaneous gesticulation in a patient with callosal disconnection.

This is an investigation of spontaneous gesticulation in a left-handed patient with a callosal disconnection syndrome due to infarction of the total length of the corpus callosum. After callosal infarction, the patient gesticulated predominantly unilaterally with the left hand despite left apraxia. Bilateral gesticulation occurred later on and was presumably achieved by an increase in ipsilateral proximal control. Movement analysis further indicated that the two hemispheres are specialized for certain gesture types. Gestures with emotional connotation and batons (emphasizing prosody) were gene

Ontogenesis of hemispheric specialization: apraxia associated with congenital left hemisphere lesions.

In adults apraxia is more common after left-hemisphere damage. The engram for control of skilled motor movements has therefore been considered a specialized function of the left hemisphere. The ontogenesis of motor control was studied in a group of prepubertal children with congenital unilateral hemispheric lesions. Left-hemisphere lesions caused greater impairment of rapid independent finger movements, suggesting that specialization for motor control is innately programmed in the left hemisphere. No subject evidenced apraxia to verbal command, but adult-like performance is not yet expected at

Lineage-restricted genomic islands drive rhizosphere niche specialization in Pseudomonas capeferrum.

In the rhizosphere, plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria play a pivotal role in plant health by efficiently colonizing roots and enhancing growth through diverse direct and indirect mechanisms. Many of these beneficial traits are associated with genomic islands (GEIs) acquired via horizontal gene transfer, yet their contribution to rhizosphere fitness remains poorly understood. Here, we report the whole-genome sequencing and comprehensive analysis of Pseudomonas putida strain IsoF, a highly efficient root colonizer originally isolated from the tomato rhizosphere that induces systemic resistanc

Patient Preferences for Provider Specialization for Induced Abortion and Miscarriage Care.

Objectives: Most induced abortions are provided by abortion specialists, despite knowledge and skills overlap with other disciplines, particularly general obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN). We evaluated patient preferences for abortion and miscarriage care from a family planning specialist versus other providers, and perceptions of a general OB/GYN's ability to provide safe miscarriage and abortion care. Materials and Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional survey among individuals aged 18-44 receiving induced abortion (n = 54) or nonabortion gynecological care (n = 111) in North Carolina hos

Hemispheric specialization in mental arithmetic: Insights from functional transcranial Doppler Sonography.

Understanding hemispheric specialization in arithmetic offers insights into the neural basis of numerical cognition. Previous research using functional transcranial Doppler Sonography (fTCD) suggested a left-lateralized pattern for multiplication and bilateral activation for subtraction, but these findings were limited by small samples and uncontrolled task difficulty. The present study aimed to replicate and extend these results using a substantially larger sample. Participants completed multiplication and subtraction tasks of varying difficulty while cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) in th

Surgical Outcomes of Emergent Perianal Abscess Treatment: Does Colorectal Specialization Matter?

INTRODUCTION: Perianal abscess (PA) is a common surgical emergency. However, the role of colorectal specialization in intraoperative decision-making and postoperative outcomes for its management remains elusive. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between specialization and the management of PA. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of a prospectively collected database of patients undergoing PA drainage during the period 2013-2023. The cohort was divided into two groups: patients treated by colorectal surgeons (CSs) and those who were treated by general surgeons

Models of human hippocampal specialization: a look at the electrophysiological evidence.

From an anatomical perspective, the concept that the anterior and posterior hippocampus fulfill distinct cognitive roles may seem unsurprising. When compared with the posterior hippocampus, the anterior region is proportionally larger, with visible expansion of the CA1 subfield and intimate continuity with adjacent medial temporal lobe (MTL) structures such as the uncus and amygdala. However, the functional relevance emerging from these anatomical differences remains to be established in humans. Drawing on both rodent and human data, several models of hippocampal longitudinal specialization ha

Provider Specialization in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases: Quality of Care and Outcomes.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Management of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) is complex and variation in care has been well-documented. However, the drivers of practice variation remain unexplored. We examined variation based on the treating gastroenterologist's IBD focus (proportion of outpatient visits for IBD). METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort of newly diagnosed patients with IBD using data from Optum's deidentified Clinformatics Data Mart Database (2000-2020). The exposure variable was whether the treating gastroenterologist had an IBD focus (>90th percentile of IBD visits/total outpati

Lessons of Vascular Specialization From Secondary Lymphoid Organ Lymphatic Endothelial Cells.

Secondary lymphoid organs, such as lymph nodes, harbor highly specialized and compartmentalized niches. These niches are optimized to facilitate the encounter of naive lymphocytes with antigens and antigen-presenting cells, enabling optimal generation of adaptive immune responses. Lymphatic vessels of lymphoid organs are uniquely specialized to perform a staggering variety of tasks. These include antigen presentation, directing the trafficking of immune cells but also modulating immune cell activation and providing factors for their survival. Recent studies have provided insights into the mole

Brain functional specialization in obsessive-compulsive disorder associated with neurotransmitter profiles.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral specialization is an important functional architecture of the human brain. Abnormal cerebral specialization may be the underlying pathogenesis of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) was used to show that the specialization pattern of OCD was of great significance for early warning and precise intervention of the disease. METHOD: The autonomy index (AI) based on the rs-fMRI was calculated to compare brain specializations between 80 OCD patients and 81 matched healthy controls (HCs). In addition, we also correla

Maturation of hemispheric specialization for face encoding during infancy and toddlerhood.

Little is known about the neural processes associated with attending to social stimuli during infancy and toddlerhood. Using infant magnetoencephalography (MEG), fusiform gyrus (FFG) activity while processing Face and Non-Face stimuli was examined in 46 typically developing infants 3 to 24 months old (28 males). Several findings indicated FFG maturation throughout the first two years of life. First, right FFG responses to Face stimuli decreased as a function of age. Second, hemispheric specialization to the face stimuli developed somewhat slowly, with earlier right than left FFG peak activity

Intracranial EEG evidence of functional specialization for taxonomic and thematic relations.

The dual-hub account posits that the neural organization of semantic knowledge is segregated by the type of semantic relation with anterior temporal lobe (ATL) specializing for taxonomic relations and inferior parietal lobule (IPL) for thematic relations. This study critically examined this account by recording intracranial EEG from an array of depth electrodes within ATL, IPL, and two regions within the semantic control network, inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) and posterior middle temporal gyrus (pMTG), while 17 participants with refractory epilepsy completed a semantic relatedness judgment task

Sport Specialization in Middle School and High School Long-Distance Runners.

CONTEXT: Previous reports suggested that highly specialized adolescent athletes may be at a higher risk of injury, worse sleep quality, and less sport enjoyment than low-level specialized athletes. To date, the sport specialization literature has primarily addressed adolescent athletes in a variety of sports. However, whether the findings on sport specialization in predominantly nonrunning athletes are generalizable to adolescent long-distance runners is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To compare injury history, running volume, quality of life, sleep habits, and running enjoyment among male and female mi

Specialization of the Right Intraparietal Sulcus for Processing Mathematics During Development.

Mathematical ability, especially perception of numbers and performance of arithmetics, is known to rely on the activation of intraparietal sulcus (IPS). However, reasoning ability and working memory, 2 highly associated abilities also activate partly overlapping regions. Most studies aimed at localizing mathematical function have used group averages, where individual variability is averaged out, thus confounding the anatomical specificity when localizing cognitive functions. Here, we analyze the functional anatomy of the intraparietal cortex by using individual analysis of subregions of IPS ba

The application of Bayesian hierarchical models to quantify individual diet specialization.

Intraspecific variation in ecologically relevant traits is widespread. In generalist predators in particular, individual diet specialization is likely to have important consequences for food webs. Understanding individual diet specialization empirically requires the ability to quantify individual diet preferences accurately. Here we compare the currently used frequentist maximum likelihood approach, which infers individual preferences using the observed prey proportions to Bayesian hierarchical models that instead estimate these proportions. Using simulated and empirical data, we find that the
