Error patterns on a computerized version of Raven's progressive matrices in specific learning disorders.

Specific Learning Disorders (SLDs) are neurodevelopmental conditions characterized by persistent difficulties in reading, writing, or mathematics. These difficulties occur in the absence of intellectual disabilities, sensory impairments (visual/auditory), or neurological issues, indicating that SLDs do not reflect a lack of ability or a global cognitive impairment. Rather, they represent a different learning profile, where domain-specific difficulties coexist with otherwise adequate intellectual functioning. Consistent with this perspective and contemporary models conceptualizing intelligence

Prenatal Vitamin D Levels in Maternal Sera and Offspring Specific Learning Disorders.

Recent evidence has suggested potential harmful effects of vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy on offspring brain development, for example, elevated risks for neuropsychiatric disorders. Findings on general cognition and academic achievement are mixed, and no studies have examined the effect of prenatal 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels on diagnosed specific learning disorders, which was the aim of this study. We examined a nested case-control sample from the source cohort of all singleton-born children in Finland between 1996 and 1997 (n = 115,730). A total of 1607 cases with specific le

Exploring Theory of Mind in Specific Learning Disorder: Subtype Differences and the Role of ADHD Comorbidity.

Specific learning disorder (SLD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impairments in reading, writing and/or mathematics, often accompanied by social and emotional difficulties. Although deficits in theory of mind (ToM) have been observed in children with SLD, the variability of ToM skills across SLD subtypes remains unclear. This case-control study examined ToM skills in children diagnosed with SLD (dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyscalculia) with those of typically developing peers and investigated the effect of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) comorbidity. The sample c

The association between cognitive disengagement syndrome and specific learning disorder in children and adolescents with ADHD.

This study aimed to examine the associations between Cognitive Disengagement Syndrome (CDS) and Specific Learning Disorder (SLD) in children and adolescents with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). We included sixty "ADHD-only" cases and eighty-two "ADHD + SLD" cases with an IQ score of 80 and above, aged 8-15. We applied both a structured psychiatric interview and a mental status examination. Parents completed the ADHD-Rating Scale IV, Barkley Child Attention Scale, and Specific Learning Disorder-Evaluation Scale. The sample consisted of 94 boys and 48 girls. The mean age of the

Reading and Writing Skills in Children With Specific Learning Disabilities With and Without Developmental Coordination Disorder.

This pilot study is to investigate the influence of a developmental coordination disorder (DCD) comorbidity in a group of children with learning disability (LD). Reading and writing were assessed to investigate if the coexistence of a motor impairment can worsen writing quality, speed, and reading accuracy. A sample of 33 LD children (aged 7-11 years) was divided in two subgroups, on the base of their scores on the Movement Assessment Battery for Children: LD-only (n = 14) and LD with a comorbidity for DCD (LD-DCD, n = 19). No differences were found in handwriting speed, but significant differ

Anxiety Disorder-Specific Predictors of Treatment Outcome in the Coordinated Anxiety Learning and Management (CALM) Trial.

Identifying baseline characteristics associated with treatment outcome in generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder (SAD) or post-traumatic stress disorder. We performed two secondary analyses of the Coordinated Anxiety Learning and Management trial. Baseline characteristics and their interactions with treatment assignment were analyzed via stepwise logistic regression models and receiver-operating criterion analyses by disorder predicting remission and response for each disorder. Predictors for poor outcome across diagnoses were comorbid depression and low socioeco

The prevalence of specific learning disorder in mathematics and comorbidity with other developmental disorders in primary school-age children.

Mathematics difficulties are common in both children and adults, and they can have a great impact on people's lives. A specific learning disorder in mathematics (SLDM or developmental dyscalculia) is a special case of persistent mathematics difficulties, where the problems with maths cannot be attributed to environmental factors, intellectual disability, or mental, neurological or physical disorders. The aim of the current study was to estimate the prevalence rate of SLDM, any gender differences in SLDM, and the most common comorbid conditions. The DSM-5 provides details regarding these only f

Teleneuropsychology intervention in phonological awareness for children with specific learning disorder with reading and mathematical difficulties.

Specific learning disorder (SLD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects 5-15% of school-aged children worldwide. Often, difficulties in reading (SLD-RD) and mathematics (SLD-MD) occur together. Deficits in phonological awareness (PA) have been identified as the common factor between the two difficulties. Intervention in PA has been shown to be effective in SLD-RD; however, it is not clear whether it is also effective in SLD-MD. Neuropsychological intervention is usually conducted face-to-face, but when the patient is in a remote location or during extraordinary situations such as the CO

Specific Cues Can Improve Procedural Learning and Retention in Developmental Coordination Disorder and/or Developmental Dyslexia.

The present study investigates procedural learning of motor sequences in children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) and/or developmental dyslexia (DD), typically-developing children (TD) and healthy adults with a special emphasis on (1) the role of the nature of stimuli and (2) the neuropsychological functions associated to final performance of the sequence. Seventy children and ten adults participated in this study and were separated in five experimental groups: TD, DCD, DD, and DCD + DD children and adults. Procedural learning was assessed with a serial reaction time task (SRTT)

Study of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in children and adolescents with specific learning disorder (dyslexia).

BACKGROUND: Dyslexia is a type of specific learning disability (SLD) which has neurobiological origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. The impaired reading in dyslexia is associated with inability to process the sensory input that enters the nervous system. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has emerged as a potential source in understanding the neurobiology and to identify the brain basis of sensory stimuli processed in dyslexic patients. METHODOLOGY: The present study was conducted to ass

What Language Should We Use When Talking About Children With Specific Learning Disorders? A Study Exploring the Preference of Australian Parents, Professionals and Adults Who Have a Specific Learning Disorder.

In Australia, a broad range of terms are used when discussing children and young people with a specific learning disorder (SLD). However, little is known about how SLD-related terminology is perceived by adults with an SLD, parents of children with an SLD and the professionals who support them. The purpose of this study was to identify any SLD-related preferred terms and explore factors which may influence these preferences. Data were collected from 177 participants via an online survey which asked them to rate how much they liked each term from a provided list and why. Results showed that cle

[A specific disorder in Kanji writing in a learning disabled child with a visual cognition disorder--a cognitive-neuropsychological and electrophysiological analysis].

We reported a learning disabled child with a specific disorder involving Kanji writing. The patient was a 13-year-old boy. Although he manifested generally normal intellectual ability and his performance on WISC-R indicated that VIQ was 101 and PIQ 84, he could only write approximately 20% of Kanji, which he learned at age 6 to 7. On cognitive-psychological tests, he showed a visual cognition disorder that was different from that in a previously reported case during information processing. Electrophysiologically, he showed a disorder in visual task-relevant potentials. The mechanism underlying

Cognitive profile and inflammatory markers in children and adolescents with specific learning disorder: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Specific learning disorder (SLD) is frequently characterized by weaknesses in working memory and processing speed; however, its biological correlates remain unclear. In this study, we investigate whether inexpensive, blood count-derived inflammation composites and micronutrients are related to cognitive variation in SLD. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, participants in the SLD group underwent Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fourth Edition assessment to characterize their cognitive profile, yielding a Full-Scale IQ (FSIQ) and four index scores: Verbal Comprehension,

Specific Learning Disorder in Children and Adolescents, a Scoping Review on Motor Impairments and Their Potential Impacts.

Mastering motor skills is important for children to achieve functional mobility and participate in daily activities. Some studies have identified that students with specific learning disorders (SLD) could have impaired motor skills; however, this postulate and the potential impacts remain unclear. The purpose of the scoping review was to evaluate if SLD children have motor impairments and examine the possible factors that could interfere with this assumption. The sub-objective was to investigate the state of knowledge on the lifestyle behavior and physical fitness of participants with SLD and

Cognitive Pathways in Atypical Development: Executive Functions in Children With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Specific Learning Disorders.

Executive functions encompass a range of higher-level cognitive processes that are crucial for attaining goals and adjusting behaviours. They play a significant role in the early predictions of learning outcomes, academic performance, health, well-being, economic status and social interactions in life. The preschool years are an important period for the development of executive functions, during which an early intervention can have notably beneficial effects. The primary aim of this narrative review is to enhance our understanding of certain executive function impairments, their developmental

Hot and cool executive function and theory of mind in children with and without specific learning disorders.

Executive function (EF) in specific learning disorders (SLD) has been investigated using mainly cool EF tasks, whilst less is known about hot EF and theory of mind (ToM) in this population. The aim of this study was to examine group differences in hot and cool EF and ToM in school-aged children with SLD relative to typically developing peers. It also attempted to investigate whether EF measures are significant predictors of ToM in SLD and typical development. Cross-sectional data were collected from 135 school-aged children with and without SLD (8-10 years old), tested on measures of cool & ho
