OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the speech services using a Community-Based Speech Therapy model by trained speech assistants (SAs) on the improvement of articulation in cleft palate children.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: Seventeen children with repaired cleft palates who lived in Chiang Rai and Phayao provinces were registered to the camp. They received speech therapy with a 4-day intensive camp and five follow-up camps at Chiang Rai's The Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA). Eight speech assistants (SAs) were trained to correct articulation errors with specific modeling by the speech-language pathologists

The method of "speech donorship" is based on genetically mediated factors of tempo-rhythmic concordance of speech in monozygotic twins (co-twins) and pairs of close relatives (father-son, mother-daughter, sibs). Recording of the natural audiovisual donor sample of the speech adapted for a structurally-linguistic condition of speech of the recipient was carried out on a digital movie camera. This sample is defined using the data of computer transformation obtained by the program specially developed by the authors. The program allows to compute time equivalents of three parameters: the time spen

BACKGROUND: Children with speech sound disorders (SSD) constitute a heterogeneous population, with speech difficulties arising from different loci within the speech processing system. Speech perception has long been implicated in SSD; however, previous findings remain mixed, partly due to differences in task demands and limited consideration of SSD subtypes. In particular, few studies have systematically examined speech perception across multiple contrast types that are explicitly structured around common developmental error patterns and across clinically defined SSD subgroups.

Speech brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) can restore communication in individuals with neuromotor disorders who are unable to speak. However, current speech BCIs limit patient usability and successful deployment by requiring large volumes of patient-specific data collected over long periods of time. A promising solution to facilitate usability and accelerate their successful deployment is to combine data from multiple patients. This has proven difficult, however, due to differences in user neuroanatomy, varied placement of electrode arrays, and sparse sampling of targeted anatomy. Here, by alig

Quantifying the factors that predict variability in speech-in-speech recognition represents a fundamental challenge in auditory science. Stimulus factors associated with energetic and informational masking (IM) modulate variability in speech-in-speech recognition, but energetic effects can be difficult to estimate in spectro-temporally dynamic speech maskers. The current experiment characterized the effects of short-term audibility and differences in target and masker location (or perceived location) on the horizontal plane for sentence recognition in two-talker speech. Thirty young adults wit

The faculty of language allows humans to state falsehoods in their choice of words. However, while what is said might easily uphold a lie, how it is said may reveal deception. Hence, some features of the voice that are difficult for liars to control may keep speech mostly, if not always, honest. Previous research has identified that speech timing and voice pitch cues can predict the truthfulness of speech, but this evidence has come primarily from laboratory experiments, which sacrifice ecological validity for experimental control. We obtained ecologically valid recordings of deceptive speech

This paper presents a neural system-based technique for segmenting short impaired speech utterances into silent, unvoiced, and voiced sections. Moreover, the proposed technique identifies those points of the (voiced) speech where the spectrum becomes steady. The resulting technique thus aims at detecting that limited section of the speech which contains the information about the potential impairment of the speech. This section is of interest to the speech therapist as it corresponds to the possibly incorrect movements of speech organs (lower lip and tongue with respect to the vocal tract). Two

The effect of speech rate reduction on speech and pause characteristics during a reading task was examined for speakers with Parkinson's disease (PD) and a group of control speakers. Duration of utterances and characteristics of pausing (duration, interpause phrase length, and location) were determined. At habitual reading rate, subjects with PD had shorter speech duration and greater time per pause than control subjects. At reduced reading rates, subjects with PD increased speech duration so that it was equivalent to the control speakers at habitual rate. Both groups had the majority of their

PURPOSE: Previous articles in this supplement described rationale for and development of the pause marker (PM), a diagnostic marker of childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), and studies supporting its validity and reliability. The present article assesses the theoretical coherence of the PM with speech processing deficits in CAS.
METHOD: PM and other scores were obtained for 264 participants in 6 groups: CAS in idiopathic, neurogenetic, and complex neurodevelopmental disorders; adult-onset apraxia of speech (AAS) consequent to stroke and primary progressive apraxia of speech; and idiopathic speec

PURPOSE: Tele-speech therapy refers to the application of telecommunication technologies to provide speech-language pathology services at a distance and establishes communication between a specialist and a patient for assessment, intervention, or consultation. Due to the shortage of speech therapists, the use of tele-speech therapy services can be helpful, especially for those who do not have access to speech-language therapists. The aim of this study was to investigate speech therapists' perspectives about using tele-speech therapy.
METHODS: This was a qualitative study conducted in 2020. Da

Purpose: To assist in remote treatment, speech-language pathologists (SLPs) rely on mobile games, which though entertaining, lack feedback mechanisms. Games integrated with automatic speech recognition (ASR) offer a solution where speech productions control gameplay. We therefore performed a feasibility study to assess children's and SLPs' experiences towards speech-controlled games, game feature preferences and ASR accuracy. Method: Ten children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), six typically developing (TD) children and seven SLPs trialled five games and answered questionnaires. Resear

A distinguishing feature of Broca's aphasia is non-fluent halting speech typically involving one to three words per utterance. Yet, despite such profound impairments, some patients can mimic audio-visual speech stimuli enabling them to produce fluent speech in real time. We call this effect 'speech entrainment' and reveal its neural mechanism as well as explore its usefulness as a treatment for speech production in Broca's aphasia. In Experiment 1, 13 patients with Broca's aphasia were tested in three conditions: (i) speech entrainment with audio-visual feedback where they attempted to mimic a

Abstract In The Netherlands, a web application for speech training, E-learning-based speech therapy (EST), has been developed for patients with dysarthria, a speech disorder resulting from acquired neurological impairments such as stroke or Parkinson's disease. In this report, the EST infrastructure and its potentials for both therapists and patients are elucidated. EST provides patients with dysarthria the opportunity to engage in intensive speech training in their own environment, in addition to undergoing the traditional face-to-face therapy. Moreover, patients with chronic dysarthria can u

In the course of increasing demands in acute stroke care in stroke units, criteria for efficient speech diagnosis, which can be applied in the first hours of acute stroke are necessary. In this study we investigated early recognition of speech and speech-associated disorders in acute stroke, and compared the neurologists' clinical diagnoses at admission with the results of a test battery (KAP--Kurze Aphasieprüfung). 90 of 104 consecutively recruited patients could be tested within the first three days. 53.8% (n = 49/N = 91) of the patients presented with language disorders in the clinical neur

INTRODUCTION: Speech auditory brainstem response (ABR) provides useful information about how the brainstem encodes complex sounds and is a powerful tool to evaluate auditory processing deficiencies not assessed by click stimuli.
OBJECTIVE: Compare speech ABR responses among preschool children with normal hearing thresholds, divided into 3 groups: speech delay, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and control group of typically developing children.
METHODS: Retrospective analysis of 366 children, aged between 10 and 84 months, evaluated between 2015 and 2022. Click and speech ABR, and auditory ste

BACKGROUND: Children with speech sound disorders (SSD) are at higher risk of communication breakdown, but the impact of having an SSD may vary from child to child. Determining the severity of SSD helps speech-language therapists (SLTs) to recognise the extent of the problem and to identify and prioritise children who require intervention.
AIMS: This study aimed to identify severity factors for SSD in order to develop a multifactorial Speech Sound Disorder Severity Construct (SSDSC) using SLTs' views and the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF).

Speech is a powerful, natural mode of communication that facilitates effective interactions in human societies. However, when fluency or flow of speech is affected or interrupted, it leads to speech impairment. There are several types of speech impairment depending on the speech pattern and range from mild to severe. Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is the most common speech disorder in children, with 1 out of 12 children diagnosed globally. Significant advancements in speech assessment tools have been reported to assist speech-language pathologists diagnosis speech impairment. In recent year

Purpose This case-control study sought to determine if (a) children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), other speech sound disorders (SSDs), and typical development would perform differently on a procedural learning assessment and (b) whether grammatical ability would impact group differences. Method Communication, motor, and procedural learning abilities were assessed in 48 children with CAS (n = 13), SSD (n = 20), and typical development (n = 15), between 43 and 97 months of age (M = 66 months, SD = 12 months). Results On average, children with CAS demonstrated grammatical and motor impa
