Existing literature suggests that one of the effects of treatment based on prolonged speech is increased durations of acoustic segments. However, the external validity of the data concerned may be questioned because the data were not based on spontaneous speech samples and were gathered from subjects with unknown treatment histories. With this in mind, the present investigation used young clients with no history of treatment based on prolonged speech and obtained pretreatment and posttreatment acoustic measures from spontaneous speech samples. Acoustic measures showed no significant posttreatm

Click-evoked oto-acoustic emissions (EOEs) and speech audiometry were recorded in a group of normally hearing subjects (n = 56 ears), and a group of patients demonstrating sensorineural hearing loss due to presbycusis (n = 39 ears). Correlations were made between detection-threshold of EOEs, speech reception threshold (i.e., lowest hearing level at which the subject can repeat 50% of a message), and discrimination score (i.e., discrimination score determined 35 dB above the speech reception threshold). EOEs have never been observed when speech reception threshold was equal to or greater than 3

This paper surveys acoustic studies of speech development and discusses the data with respect to the anatomical and neuromuscular maturation of the speech mechanism. The acoustic data on various aspects of speech production indicate that the accuracy of motor control improves with age until adult-like performance is achieved at about 11 or 12 years, somewhat after the age at which speech sound acquisition usually is judged to be complete. Other topics of discussion are (1) problems in the spectrographic analysis of children's speech, (2) formant scale factors that relate children's and adults'

Teachers play a central role in shaping children's early language environments through the way they speak. Child-directed speech (CDS), characterized by distinct acoustic and prosodic adjustments, has been shown to facilitate children's phonetic perception and language learning. This study investigates how Mandarin-speaking kindergarten teachers adapt their speech when addressing children compared to adults. Speech samples were collected from 35 female teachers using interactive puppet-based scenarios featuring Peppa Pig and Xiong Da. Acoustic analyses focused on the corner vowels /a/, /i/, an

Speech production difficulties in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are heterogeneous and are not uniformly characterized by articulatory impairment across the spectrum. However, some autistic subgroups, particularly minimally verbal children, children with low expressive-language ability, and those with suspected co-occurring speech-motor difficulties, may show atypical vowel-acoustic patterns. Because vowel production can be quantified through measures such as formant frequencies, vowel-space area, duration, and variability, these parameters may offer useful objective information for characteri

PURPOSE: While an emerging body of research has demonstrated that late talkers (LTs) show continued subclinical deficits in language abilities, less is known about their development of speech production skills. The current study investigated speech production abilities among 3-year-old children with a history of late talking (hLTs) or typical talking (hTTs) using three measures of speech production skills.
METHOD: We assessed speech production skills in a sample of 3-year-old children who were previously identified as LTs or typical talkers (44 hTTs, 31 hLTs) using a norm-referenced assessmen

This case report aimed to verify the effect of lingual frenectomy on the functional anatomical aspects of the tongue, the phonetic-acoustic characteristics, and the magnitude of tongue movement in the phonemes [ɾ] and [l] after the lingual frenectomy. The anatomical characteristics of the lingual frenum and the functional aspects of the tongue were evaluated using the Protocol for Evaluation of the Lingual Frenum. The phonetic-acoustic particularities of speech were assessed through formant analysis using PRAAT software, and the evaluation of the magnitude of tongue movements was conducted via

PURPOSE: Age is a high-risk factor for dysphagia. Speech and swallowing share the same anatomical and neurophysiological basis. Their functions are closely related; hence, speech assessment can predict the risk of dysphagia. This study aimed to investigate the factors influencing presbyphagia in a normal elderly Shanghainese population by analyzing speech acoustic parameters.
METHODS: Relevant speech acoustic parameters were compared between 15 people with dysphagia and 15 without dysphagia. After extracting sensitive speech acoustic parameters related to swallowing, changes in sensitive para

Several factors are known to influence speech accuracy in patients with apraxia of speech (AOS), e.g., syllable structure or word length. However, the impact of word stress has largely been neglected so far. More generally, the role of prosodic information at the phonetic encoding stage of speech production often remains unconsidered in models of speech production. This study aimed to investigate the influence of word stress on error production in AOS. Two-syllabic words with stress on the first (trochees) vs. the second syllable (iambs) were compared in 14 patients with AOS, three of them exh

PURPOSE: The effects of lingual nerve impairment on the phonetic quality of diphthongs were studied by analyzing changes in their main acoustic features when anesthetic was injected into the lingual nerve to partly block the normal neural feedback mechanisms in speech.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The speech material consisted of 8 diphthongs in word context produced by 7 male speakers. Every utterance was repeated 10 times using normal speech rate and intonation with and without the anesthesia (Ultracain D-Suprarenin, 0.8 mL; Aventis Pharma Deutscland GmpH, Frankfurt am Main, Germany). In addition,

The ability of 35 language impaired (LI) and 38 normally developing children between the ages of 5 and 8 1/2 yr to discriminate between speech stimuli, using an operantly conditioned, nonverbal motor response, was investigated. Six syllable contrasts ([ba] versus [da], [da] versus [ta], [epsilon] versus [ae], [dab] versus [daeb], [sa] versus [sta] and [sa] versus [integral a]) were selected to investigate discrimination of various temporal and spectral cues. Results demonstrated that the LI group made most errors discriminating syllables which were differentiated by consonants and fewest error

BACKGROUND: Speech biomarkers have been used to assess motor dysfunction in people with Parkinson's disease (PD), but speech biomarkers for mild cognitive impairment in PD (PD-MCI) have not been well studied.
OBJECTIVE: To identify speech acoustic features associated with PD-MCI and evaluate the performance of a model to discriminate PD-MCI from participants with normal cognitive status (PD-NC).
METHODS: We analyzed speech samples from 42 participants with PD, diagnosed as either PD-MCI or PD-NC using the Movement disorders Society Task Force Tier II criteria as a gold-standard classificatio

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), characterized by complete or partial airway obstruction during sleep, affects approximately 38% of the adult population. The clinical diagnosis of OSA is typically conducted using polysomnography (PSG), which has been reported to be cumbersome, requires technical expertise, and involves long waitlists. Consequently, alternative methods, such as questionnaires, have gained attention in recent years. However, while these methods are highly sensitive, they suffer from low specificity. Speech-based screening has emerged as an accessible alternative and has been widel

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Individuals with Parkinson disease (PD) often exhibit decreased range of movement secondary to the disease process, which has been shown to affect articulatory movements. A number of investigations have failed to find statistically significant differences between control and disordered groups, and between speaking conditions, using traditional vowel space area measures. The purpose of the current investigation was to evaluate both between-group (PD versus control) and within-group (habitual versus clear) differences in articulatory function using a novel vowel space measure
