Speech sound processing deficits and training-induced neural plasticity in rats with dyslexia gene knockdown.

In utero RNAi of the dyslexia-associated gene Kiaa0319 in rats (KIA-) degrades cortical responses to speech sounds and increases trial-by-trial variability in onset latency. We tested the hypothesis that KIA- rats would be impaired at speech sound discrimination. KIA- rats needed twice as much training in quiet conditions to perform at control levels and remained impaired at several speech tasks. Focused training using truncated speech sounds was able to normalize speech discrimination in quiet and background noise conditions. Training also normalized trial-by-trial neural variability and temp

Speech training alters consonant and vowel responses in multiple auditory cortex fields.

Speech sounds evoke unique neural activity patterns in primary auditory cortex (A1). Extensive speech sound discrimination training alters A1 responses. While the neighboring auditory cortical fields each contain information about speech sound identity, each field processes speech sounds differently. We hypothesized that while all fields would exhibit training-induced plasticity following speech training, there would be unique differences in how each field changes. In this study, rats were trained to discriminate speech sounds by consonant or vowel in quiet and in varying levels of background

[Use of auditory field measurement in patients with otosclerosis].

BACKGROUND: Middle ear surgery sometimes leads to unpleasant auditory impressions such as distortion or hyperacusis that cannot be detected by conventional audiometric testing. METHOD: Sixty-one patients with conductive hearing loss caused by otosclerosis underwent audiological evaluation, which included a questionnaire followed by testing of the audiometric threshold, speech audiometry, and assessment and quantification of loudness perception with a commercial system (WESTRA). This investigation includes the postoperative measurement of hearing improvement and the patients' subjective impres

Academic outcomes in children with histories of speech sound disorders.

Tests of phonology, semantics, and syntax were administered to 52 preschool children (19 girls and 33 boys, age 4-6 years) with moderate to severe speech sound disorders. The children's performance on these tests was used to predict language, reading, and spelling abilities at school age (age 8-11 years). Language impairment at school age was related to poor performance on preschool tests of syntax and nonsense word repetition, while reading impairment was predicted by poor performance in all preschool test domains (phonology, semantics, and syntax). In contrast, spelling impairment was predic

[200 years testing hearing disorders with speech, 50 years german speech audiometry -- a review].

UNLABELLED: FROM THE BEGINNIGS TO CLASSICAL SPEECH TESTS: The need for classification of different degrees of hearing disorders first arose when it seemed possible to treat deafness. Grapengiesser in Berlin 1801 had applied galvanic current to the ears of deaf children and reported some success. Pfingsten in Kiel in 1804 using this method was the first to use speech in diagnosing different degrees of deafness. He divided speech sounds into three classes: vowels, voiced consonants and voiceless consonants. Itard in Paris in 1821 gave a classification of five classes according to which sounds co

Improvement in speech perception and production abilities in children using a multichannel cochlear implant.

Nine children received the Nucleus multichannel cochlear prosthesis. The preoperative evaluation consisted of assessments of auditory function, speech recognition, linguistic skills, and speech production. There were no surgical complications, and recovery in all patients was uneventful. The device was programmed 4 to 5 weeks following surgery, and all children were conditioned to the task. Postoperative training began immediately following device stimulation and is ongoing. Auditory skills and speech production scales were devised to monitor each child's progress. All children have shown vary

Design of an efficient music-speech discriminator.

In this paper, the problem of the design of a simple and efficient music-speech discriminator for large audio data sets in which advanced music playing techniques are taught and voice and music are intrinsically interleaved is addressed. In the process, a number of features used in speech-music discrimination are defined and evaluated over the available data set. Specifically, the data set contains pieces of classical music played with different and unspecified instruments (or even lyrics) and the voice of a teacher (a top music performer) or even the overlapped voice of the translator and oth

Speech intelligibility in noise with ear protectors.

Speech perception was tested in high level noise under controlled laboratory conditions in noise-exposed workmen and normal subjects, with and without a hearing protector. The group was further divided by age and English fluency, the latter group being included because of the high proportion of non-fluent English speakers in the Canadian workforce. In normal-hearing subjects the highest discrimination scores were found without background noise, they were lower with white noise as a masker, and even lower with crowd noise as a masker; wearing of a protector had no effect on intelligibility. Development of a Pitch Discrimination Screening Test for Preschool Children.

BACKGROUND: There is a critical need for tests of auditory discrimination for young children as this skill plays a fundamental role in the development of speaking, prereading, reading, language, and more complex auditory processes. Frequency discrimination is important with regard to basic sensory processing affecting phonological processing, dyslexia, measurements of intelligence, auditory memory, Asperger syndrome, and specific language impairment. PURPOSE: This study was performed to determine the clinical feasibility of the Pitch Discrimination Test (PDT) to screen the preschool child's a

Hearing loss due to aging (presbycusis).

Presbycusis is the progressive hearing loss caused by histologic changes due to aging. Schuknecht described four histopathologic types of presbycusis and correlated these findings to audiometric data. In a retrospective study, some strict criteria were set to distinguish the "pure" cases of presbycusis in a group of 1,181 subjects, 50 years of age and older, seen in our Audiology Clinic over one year; 91 subjects were found to meet these criteria. An attempt was made to fit the pure tone threshold curves into the types described by Schuknecht and correlate these curves to speech discrimination

Syllable onsets II: three-element clusters in phonological treatment.

This study extends the application of the Sonority Sequencing Principle, as reported in J. A. Gierut (1999), to acquisition of word-initial 3-element clusters by children with functional phonological delays (ages in years;months: 3;4 to 6;3). The representational structure of 3-element clusters is complex and unusual because it consists of an s-adjunct plus a branching onset, which respectively violate and conform to the Sonority Sequencing Principle. Given the representational asymmetry, it is unclear how children might learn these clusters in treatment or whether such treatment may even be e

[Results of hearing perception after cochlear implantation in patients with auditory neuropathy].

INTRODUCTION: Results of hearing perception with patient with auditory and visual neuropathy combined with peripheral polyneuropathy one year after cochlear implantation are presented in this article. Visual problems and hearing loss were progressing during recent years leading to social problems and communication disability. Speech discrimination was much worse than could be suspected based on pure tone audiometry. Lack of benefit from hearing aids was also stated. METHODOLOGY: As the examination method free field speech audiometry was used based on Pruszewicz word tests and set of modified

Differentiation of types of presbycusis using the masking-level difference.

Masking-level differences in quiet at 500 Hz were used to demonstrate evidence of elevated noise levels within the auditory systems of subjects with assumed neural presbycusis. The following five groups of subjects were evaluated: normal-hearing young and old adults; and older adults with metabolic, sensory, or neural presbycusis. The group with assumed neural presbycusis--that is, bilateral high-frequency sensorineural hearing loss and poor word-recognition performance--had masking-level differences (a) in quiet that were significantly larger than those for the other groups and (b) in noise t

Consonant-vowel lateralization in dyslexic children: deficit or compensatory development?

Two studies with the same subjects examined dyslexic children's puzzling superiority in forced left ear (LE) dichotic recall with consonant-vowel (CV) combinations. Thirty dysphonemic dyslexics were compared to 30 age-matched and 30 younger reading-matched normal readers. The children were tested in directed attention dichotic listening and in pseudoword decoding, word recognition, reading comprehension, spelling, arithmetic, and general intelligence (IQ). Failure to replicate the LE effect in the first experiment or in free-recall trials suggests its probable origin in aberrant attention/arou

Contribution of Verbal Learning & Memory and Spectro-Temporal Discrimination to Speech Recognition in Cochlear Implant Users.

OBJECTIVES: Existing cochlear implant (CI) outcomes research demonstrates a high degree of variability in device effectiveness among experienced CI users. Increasing evidence suggests that verbal learning and memory (VL&M) may have an influence on speech recognition with CIs. This study examined the relations in CI users between visual measures of VL&M and speech recognition in a series of models that also incorporated spectro-temporal discrimination. Predictions were that (1) speech recognition would be associated with VL&M abilities and (2) VL&M would contribute to speech recognition outcome

Clinical results of hearing aid with noise-level-controlled selective amplification.

We have developed a hearing aid which reduces the low-frequency energy of the input sound according to the input noise level and the spectrum of the environmental noise. The results of speech discrimination tests using speech in noise in 70 hearing-impaired subjects showed improvement in word discrimination scores in noise of over 15% for 50 of 53 subjects with sensorineural hearing loss. This group of hearing-impaired patients was subdivided into categories according to (a) audiogram type [flat, sloping (i.e. gradual high-frequency loss) and abruptly falling (steep high-frequency slope)]; (b)

Auditive and cognitive factors in speech perception by elderly listeners.

A key issue in research on speech perception in the elderly is whether the difficulties in understanding speech are caused by auditive and/or cognitive factors. Resolving this issue is not only scientific interest but has many practical, i.e. diagnostic and rehabilitative, implications as well. We developed a test battery comprising auditive (sensitivity, frequency selectivity and temporal resolution), cognitive (memory performance, processing speed and intellectual abilities), and speech perception tests (at the phoneme, spondee and sentence level). This test battery was administered to 72 el
